Last year Lakes College secured over £1.2M worth of funding from Cumbria County Council and the Skills Funding Agency to develop a new facility that focuses on the provision for 14–19 year olds and learners with special educational needs and disabilities, which opened in September 2011. This year we are happy to announce that Lakes College has been chosen as the location for West Cumbria’s new Construction Skills Centre.

37 The £7M Construction Skills Centre, funded by Britain’s Energy Coast, Britain’s Energy Coast Campus, Nuclear Management Partners and Lakes College will offer industry standard training for the next generation of local skilled construction workers. Opened in September 2011, this fantastic facility is being used by providers in the area to offer excellent training in the construction and nuclear energy industries. It will be a boost to the local area by providing the training needed to meet the changes in those industries and meet future employer demands. The modern facilities in the new centre include high quality workshops with the most up-to-date technologies and exhibit areas to be used for showcasing the work carried out by the students.

Lakes College Principal Cath Richardson said; “This centre is a fantastic development for the area and the College as West Cumbria strives to become a major national hub for low carbon and renewable energy business opportunities. Investing in these skills at such a critical time is a valuable opportunity for the area.” Graham Johnson, Head of Faculty for Engineering, Construction, Business & Technology, said; “The College can offer great opportunity for anybody interested in a career in the construction industry or even provide a route for anybody looking to broaden and diversify their skills. We can train people from a basic skills level right up to HND, providing a chance for career progression within the industry.”

No car? No worries. College couldn’t be easier to reach We’re on the major Number 30 and 31 route(s) from Whitehaven, Maryport and Workington. Buses run every 15 minutes, and stop right at the front door. There are regular buses from Frizington and Thornhill. If you’re a cyclist, you are free to use our bike racks. There are cycle paths from both Workington and Whitehaven.

What if I fail my exams? It’s always great to do well in exams, but if you fall a little short — don’t worry. Our student advisers can tell you all about your options, including resits. Because we have so many superb courses at different levels, they’ll bend over backwards to place you on one that matches your needs which can help you pick up the extra grades and knowledge you need for your chosen field.

Don’t know if you want a job or a qualification? Don’t panic, because we offer lots of ways to have both. You could earn and learn as an Apprentice. Another popular choice is part-time study and part-time work. And don’t forget that even if you take a full-time course, you can still get vital work experience through an evening or summer job.

I’m a parent — how will I cope? You’re raising the next generation and that’s a privilege, so balancing your needs and your family’s needs is important. We provide access to excellent childcare facilities, and have financial support available. Student Services is your first port of call for reassurance in this area. And don’t forget that you’ll have tutor help and advice throughout your course.

42 The Princes Trust team is for 16-25 year olds who perhaps need to ease themselves back into learning. If you can’t commit fulltime and want to see what it’s like before you try, this might be the perfect option. Maybe you feel work isn’t stretching you or you’ve been unemployed for sometime. Perhaps you would love to try something new or even find out more about yourself, and want to put something back into the community. The Prince’s Trust Team programme lets you do all that, and work with great people at the same time. Even better — if you’re unemployed, it’s free, and it won’t affect your Jobseeker’s Allowance. Who are we looking for? You don’t need a shed load of qualifications or existing experience. You just need energy and a desire to try new things. That’s one of the reasons Team is a fantastic way to improve your confidence and show employers what you’re capable of. To put it simply, Team teaches practical life-skills that you just can’t get from a classroom.

Taking on challenges that make a difference to West Cumbria such as — Community Projects — Community Fundraising — Team Challenges You will also get a qualification; the practical skills you learn will lead to a formal qualification – Certificate in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills. You choose the projects you work on, combined with one residential week and two weeks work experience. If you’re unemployed, you’ll get careers advice; help with CVs, and job searches. 44 Money Matters Lakes College has always worked hard to ensure that its students have the financial support they need. For some years now we have had Learning Support funds in place and in response to changes in recent years we introduced the College bursary scheme. We now also offer the option to pay course fees by direct debit. LAKES COLLEGE BURSARY SCHEME Bursaries The bursary scheme has been created by Lakes College to help students aged 16–18 most in need of financial assistance; it will ensure they have the opportunity to study in further education. The College offers students two bursaries. You will not need to nominate which one you are applying for; we will work this out from your application. In addition to bursary payments you will be supported with the cost of any equipment you need to purchase for your course or any trips that are related to your learning. These costs have already been confirmed by your tutor.

45 The Guaranteed Bursary This is a payment of £40 per week towards the costs of coming to College. To be eligible for this bursary you must be: — In care — A care leaver — In receipt of income support (Independent student on means tested benefit in own right) — Disabled and in receipt of Employment Support Allowance — Disabled and in receipt of Disability Living Allowance The College Bursary The College Bursary is available to new 16-18 year-old full-time FE students, who meet the criteria shown. The Bursary is a payment of £24 a month towards the costs of coming to College. This payment is equal to the cost of your monthly lunches on the days you come to College, or you can choose to spend this money to help you with books and materials, or anything else that you need along the way.

If you have been unable to claim free transport from Cumbria County Council then we may be able to offer a payment each term to assist you with the cost of buying your own travel card. To qualify for this transport support you must live more than three miles from the College. To be eligible for this bursary you must: — Enrol on a full-time Further Education course. Apprenticeship courses, Higher Education courses or full cost courses are not eligible — Be at least 16 but under 19 years of age on 31 August 2012 — Dependant member of a household receiving benefits (except Child Tax Credit) — Household income of less than £20,817 — Have been resident in England or Wales for the last three years (unless you were here only for study). Residents of Scotland or Northern Ireland are not eligible for this support. Support from the bursary schemes will be subject to good attendance and behaviour and will be paid direct in to your bank account via BACS. You must provide your bank account details when applying for the bursary. Transport If you are aged 19 or under and live outside a three mile radius of Lakes College you may be entitled to support for travel from Cumbria County Council. It’s always a good time to learn. And Lakes is always here to help out. That’s why we offer our Access to Higher Education courses. Over the years, this flexible, innovative education option has helped countless local students to study at university level, and prepare for a degree. We also now offer the Access to Engineering course designed for students aged 19 and over to use as a stepping stone to a higher education qualification in engineering.

Engineering This course is designed for people who have not studied for a while, or left education without qualifications. The course covers the essential study skills needed to progress onto HNC/HND courses. The course is also recognised by the UCAS organisation, allowing learners to apply for university degree courses. Units covered are: — Higher Education toolkit – including UCAS applications Level 3 — Study Skills Level 2 — Engineering Science Level 3 — Engineering Mathematics Level 3 — ICT Level 2 — Health & Safety Level 2

You can study for a year in our ‘fast track’ programme, or eighteen months at a more relaxed rate. So, you can work at a pace that best suits you. Better still, we offer a choice of subjects to study, so you definitely won’t get bored whilst exercising the grey matter.

What makes an Apprenticeship ideal? It’s your chance to earn and learn! Apprenticeships are a great way to get a formal qualification and valuable hands-on experience. Apprenticeships can be completed in as little as 1-2 years. You may spend some time in College on day release. If you’re already in work, talk to your employer about starting an Apprenticeship. They’ll love the benefits they get from your new skills. Or, if you’re unemployed, we can help match you to your ‘ideal’ company. That means an employment contract and a training wage. A Level 2 qualification in literacy or equivalent (GCSE English C and above). Trainees will be asked to take literacy and numeracy tests at Level 2 if appropriate. Trainees without GCSE English or equivalent may be able to access the programme via a diagnostic assessment subject to university moderation. Course description How will I be assessed? There are no examinations. Assessment is continuous through a number of different methods that build up a portfolio of work. Assessments include: a small diagnostic essay; a case study presentation; observation of experienced practitioners; teaching to your peers; and a summative and reflective essay on your learning, that is informed through a reflective journal. The course is made up of one module – Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The aim of the module is to introduce trainee teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector to teaching and learning as a process, and to the development of personal and practical skills that underpin this reflective and cyclical activity.

During the module, the following areas of study are introduced: teaching and learning strategies to promote learning; planning and design of teaching to meet the diversity of learner groups; managing learners successfully; diagnostic and ongoing assessment; and becoming a reflective practitioner. Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Modules will be delivered in a variety of ways suited to higher-level study. Methods will include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and independent research. Learning at Level 4 and above is very focussed on independent study, and students will be expected to take responsibility for their own learning. What could it lead to?
