Lake Shelbyville Junior Rangers Competent Compassionate Courageous Congratulations on joining the Lake Shelbyville Junior Ranger program! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is very excited to offer this opportunity for young people to explore the beauty of the natural world, while learning how to safely enjoy it. Completing this program will not be easy; there are 9 steps, each representing an essential skill of the Ranger. When you have finished them all, and are awarded your Junior Ranger certificate, you will be well prepared to be an ambassador and steward of Lake Shelbyville.

Duties of a Lake Shelbyville Junior Ranger Learn the history of the Lake and what part it plays in our community. Learn the Lake rules and follow them. Teach others to protect and conserve natural and cultural resources. Spend time outdoors learning about the world in which you live. Defend our wildlife by being careful and respectful. Inspire others to visit the Lake and enjoy its beauty. Participate in service projects to improve the Lake. Leave everything better than you found it.

Step 1: Native Plants and Animals In this one-hour class, a Ranger will teach you to recognize native species and to understand the role they play in Lake Shelbyville’s ecosystem. Complete! _______________________________________ Ranger Signature Date Question: What is this animal?

Step 9: Stewardship Project To complete Step 9, you are required to volunteer 3 hours of your time to improve Lake Shelbyville. Think about how you would like to help Lake Shelbyville, and then talk to a Ranger to arrange for your project. Some ideas: tree/flower planting Lake/river/beach clean-up volunteer at a Lake event trail/campground maintenance landscaping around the Visitor Center You can devise your own project, so be creative! The tours start at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center. Tours are held from Memorial Day Weekend until Labor Day on Saturdays at 3PM and Sundays at 1PM.
