Broxtowe Schools Residency Project with Alderman White School and Language College

Broxtowe Borough Council’s Schools project has used the ancient Chinese Monkey stories to inspire a unique performance. Musician Ling Peng and Puppeteer Melvyn Rawlinson have worked with pupils to create large scale puppets and an original sound-scape using traditional Chinese instruments and percussion. See the results at both the Beeston Chinese New Year celebration on Saturday 31 January and at the Lakeside event on Sunday 1 February. LAKESIDE CHOREOGRAPHER IN RESIDENCE Lakeside welcomes the return of Choreographer and Dancer Rong Tao. Professor in Modern Dance Choreography at the Chongqing Meishi Film Academy and Artistic Director of the Yuwu Dance Project, this year he will work with visual artist Hetain Patel to explore ideas about language and rhythm. He will also be creating a new performance piece with professional dancers to be premiered at our outdoor celebrations on 1 February, and choreographing a short piece with some of Déda’s (Derby Dance’s) youth dancers. DANCERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY WITH RONG TAO Nottinghamshire County Council are supporting the opportunity for two trained dancers living/working in Nottinghamshire to gain professional development experience working alongside Rong Tao between 19 and 31 January, making a new piece of dance which will be premiered at the 1 February event. HUI-CHEN LIN

LAKESIDE VISUAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Hui-Chen Lin (Annie) took up her new post as Visual Artist-in Residence at Lakeside in November 2008 for 12 months. Annie initially trained in Taiwan where she learned traditional forms of eastern painting which she has subsequently translated into a contemporary form. Hui-Chen Lin will be running some workshops using origami and calligraphy on 3 and 18 January. See Workshops page for details and booking information.

BINGHAM CHINESE CULTURAL DAY

Rushcliffe Borough Council and Rushcliffe Race Awareness Forum will be celebrating the Chinese New Year with a free family Cultural Day in Bingham’s Market Place. The event will include demonstrations of traditional Chinese crafts and music as well as free food tasters and displays. This festival celebrates the creative use of digital technologies that helps ensure China’s position at the forefront of developments in contemporary cinema. The Festival marks the occasion of the establishment at the University of Nottingham in Ningbo in March 2009 of Digital China, Digital Hollywood, an inter-campus collaboration between the Institute of Film and Television Studies and the Division of International Communications.

Nottingham - Ningbo, Sister City Link THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM AND NINGBO Last summer the first cohort of Chinese students who began their studies in 2005 received their degrees in a historic graduation ceremony at the Ningbo campus. Student numbers have grown to 3,700 from more than 50 nations. September 2008 saw the opening of CSET - the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies, where cutting-edge research will be carried out into sustainable construction and energy technology to help China and the rest of the world to meet the challenges of climate change. October saw the announcement of a new collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Ningbo government to establish the Research Centre in International Finance. The Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy was launched in November, and in March 2009 an inter-campus collaboration between the Institute of Film and Television Studies and the Division of International Communications will result in Digital China, Digital Hollywood (see page 6).

NOTTINGHAM BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT LTD Commercial links between Nottingham and Ningbo have already taken root. The launch of the Nottingham Business Development Ltd office - a private company owned by Nottingham City Council and based at the University’s Ningbo campus - is strengthening economic ties between the two cities and helping to develop trade links beneficial to both nations. www.nottinghambdl.com

NOTTINGHAM/ EAST MIDLANDS BUSINESS EVENT IN CHINA In 2008 Nottingham City Council and East Midlands China Business Bureau led a delegation of 20 companies in the fields of IT, textiles, education, agriculture, healthcare and cultural exchange to visit Shanghai and Ningbo for one week. An investment seminar was held in Ningbo involving over 50 Ningbo enterprises; and UK companies visited Ningbo companies to discover potential opportunities. www.eastmidschina.co.uk

NINGBO WEEK IN NOTTINGHAM Nottingham’s partnership with the city of Ningbo was celebrated in a week long visit in May when Chinese performers came to sing, dance and practice martial arts on the Market Square and visit schools, colleges and the University.
