LAKESIDE ARTS CENTRE BROXTOWE GEDLING RUSHCLIFFE


Lakeside is delighted to welcome the return of Chongqing-based choreographer, dancer and teacher Rong Tao to the East Midlands in January 2011. During a three-week period, Rong Tao will be leading creative workshops with a range of different community, student and school groups. This will include working with young male dancers drawn from several Centres for Advanced Training (CAT) across England, including the East Midlands, to create an original new dance work which will be performed on the outdoor stage at Chinese New Year 2011 at Lakeside on Sunday 6 February. Additionally, Rong Tao will work with the digital media artist Barret Hodgson of Vent Media (www.ventmedia.co.uk) to create a new dance/video work for presentation on 6 February.

EXHIBITION OF BRUSH PAINTING & CALLIGRAPHY BY CATHY WU Cathy Wu (Chinese name Yat Ming Ho) was born in Chengdu, Sichuan and brought up in Hong Kong. She studied Chinese calligraphy under Master calligrapher and painter Lin Chien Shi in. She has exhibited in Hong Kong, London, Manchester, Liverpool and Wirral, where she has given talks and workshops. In 2007, she was commissioned to write ‘The Chinese Calligraphy Sourcebook’ which was published by Apple Press in Britain; ‘The Chinese Calligraphy Bible’ by Barrons in the US, and by Simon and Schuster in Australia. WHISPERS RICKSHAW Climb into the “Whispers” rickshaw, put on your headphones and immerse yourself in one of the intriguing stories that contemplate the nature of journeys and destiny. Classical Chinese music, visual artwork, new technology and story telling all intermingle to create a special experience. Metro-boulot-dodo are one of the UK’s leading arts organisations and “Whispers From a Rickshaw” is an intimate experience that asks the essential question: Where are you going?

CHINESE ZODIAC PYRAMID LANTERNS We’re delighted to display a set of 12 illuminated pyramid lanterns - featuring the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, which were so popular at last year’s event. Members of Nottingham Chinese Students and Scholars Association will help you to discover which animal you are.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS CULMINATING WITH FIREWORKS FINALE

Children across Nottingham, Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe Schools have been invited to make rabbits in schools and at Chinese New Year events to help celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. If you’d like to join in, then you are welcome to make your own air-dry clay rabbit at home, and to bring it to the event on the night and add it to the installation that evening. Rabbits can be collected to take home following conclusion of the fireworks.

Dragon boat racing has its origins in ancient China and can trace its history back some 2,000 years. Today it is a thriving sport, and this is a great opportunity to meet members of the hugely successful Notts Anaconda Dragon Boat team, to talk to them about their sport, and to see one of their prized Dragon boats. At 45 feet long, it makes an impressive sight! www.nottsanaconda.co.uk

The concept for Whispers From a Rickshaw was initially conceived after a trip to Southern China in 2008. A group of boys playing table tennis on a stone table with bricks for a net-triggered curiosity about what these boys dreams were and whether one of them could be or aspire to be a table tennis player in the London 2012 Olympics.

Prior to a stunning Fireworks Finale across Highfields Lake presented by Crescendo Fireworks. CHINESE NEW YEAR GALA 2011 FEATURING NANJING LITTLE RED FLOWER ARTS TROUPE Tickets £7 (£5 concessions) Running time: approximately 100 minutes including an interval Nanjing Little Red flowers, also known as Nanjing Xiao Hong Hua, are a household name in China. The troupe is one of China’s first children’s art institutions that combine formal education with artistic performance. They have won various awards at national and local children’s dance and music competitions, and toured over 20 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, America and Africa. Join us to experience the magic from the city of Nanjing and taste a sample of traditional Chinese dance and musical culture. The young performers will perform 12 different pieces showcasing choreography, singing, playing Chinese musical instruments, opera and acting.

BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL SCHOOLS RESIDENCY PROGRAMME Dance residency Renowned dance artists Du Dan and Jenny Edwards will be working collaboratively for the first time to develop a unique fusion of traditional Chinese and contemporary dance to be performed by pupils from a Broxtowe school at the Beeston Square event on Saturday 5 and the finale Chinese New Year event at Lakeside on the evening of Sunday 6 February. Parade residency Once again we unite artists Ling Peng and Melvyn Rawlinson to create a unique processional performance involving visual arts, Chinese percussion and performance. Working with pupils from a Broxtowe school , the final result can be viewed from 10.50am as the children gather at Broadgate Park – then follow the procession along the pedestrian High Road for a finale parade around Beeston Square. The artwork created during this residency will be exhibited during the afternoon, from 1pm until 4pm at Bartons as part of the attractions at the Chinese Cultural Event.

CHINESE DRAGONS AND LANTERNS Gedling Borough Council and Gedling Play Forum will be hosting an event for families in Arnot Hill Park inspired by the Chinese New Year. There will be an opportunity for families to hear traditional Chinese stories from a local storyteller and a variety of Chinese inspired arts and crafts activities will also be on offer. Workshops will take place on the hour from 2pm and places will be limited.

CHINESE PAPER LANTERNS IMPORTANT WARNING Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue and the University of Nottingham do not support the use or sale of lanterns from Highfields Park. Please note that University of Nottingham Security staff will be patrolling the park and anyone selling these lanterns will be asked to leave. The launching of lanterns is also prohibited for reasons of health and safety.

Broxtowe Borough Council in partnership with the Beeston Bid and Bartons are inviting families and individuals to attend a FREE afternoon of interactive workshops and fantastic performances. Activities and shows will be suitable for all ages and abilities so come along and have a go. Broxtowe Community Celebration Group will be at the event to share information about Chinese New Year and other New Year cultural and religious festivals and there will be an opportunity to buy a souvenir of the day at our Chinese Trinket Stall. Don’t forget to claim your prize if you have explored the Lantern Trail!

CHINESE NEW YEAR PLAY AFTERNOON Rushcliffe families are invited to join Rushcliffe Play Forum and Rushcliffe Borough Council and celebrate Chinese New Year 2011, the Year of the Rabbit. It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to experience some eastern culture with a fun filled afternoon of Chinese-inspired arts and craft activities and traditions including making clay rabbits, dragon masks, lanterns and lucky money packages. Lakeside is delighted to welcome the return of Chongqing-based choreographer, dancer and teacher Rong Tao to the East Midlands in January 2011. During a three-week period, Rong Tao will be leading creative workshops with a range of different community, student and school groups. This will include working with young male dancers drawn from several Centres for Advanced Training (CAT) across England, including the East Midlands, to create an original new dance work which will be performed on the outdoor stage at Chinese New Year 2011 at Lakeside on Sunday 6 February. Additionally, Rong Tao will work with the digital media artist Barret Hodgson of Vent Media (www.ventmedia.co.uk) to create a new dance/video work for presentation on 6 February.

She studied Chinese calligraphy under Master calligrapher and painter Lin Chien Shi in. She has exhibited in Hong Kong, London, Manchester, Liverpool and Wirral, where she has given talks and workshops. Members of Nottingham Chinese Students and Scholars Association will help you to discover which animal you are.

Children across Nottingham, Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe Schools have been invited to make rabbits in schools and at Chinese New Year events to help celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. If you’d like to join in, then you are welcome to make your own air-dry clay rabbit at home, and to bring it to the event on the night and add it to the installation that evening. Rabbits can be collected to take home following conclusion of the fireworks.

Dragon boat racing has its origins in ancient China and can trace its history back some 2,000 years. Today it is a thriving sport, and this is a great opportunity to meet members of the hugely successful Notts Anaconda Dragon Boat team, to talk to them about their sport, and to see one of their prized Dragon boats. BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL SCHOOLS RESIDENCY PROGRAMME Dance residency Renowned dance artists Du Dan and Jenny Edwards will be working collaboratively for the first time to develop a unique fusion of traditional Chinese and contemporary dance to be performed by pupils from a Broxtowe school at the Beeston Square event on Saturday 5 and the finale Chinese New Year event at Lakeside on the evening of Sunday 6 February. Parade residency Once again we unite artists Ling Peng and Melvyn Rawlinson to create a unique processional performance involving visual arts, Chinese percussion and performance. Working with pupils from a Broxtowe school , the final result can be viewed from 10.50am as the children gather at Broadgate Park – then follow the procession along the pedestrian High Road for a finale parade around Beeston Square. The artwork created during this residency will be exhibited during the afternoon, from 1pm until 4pm at Bartons as part of the attractions at the Chinese Cultural Event.

CHINESE DRAGONS AND LANTERNS Gedling Borough Council and Gedling Play Forum will be hosting an event for families in Arnot Hill Park inspired by the Chinese New Year. There will be an opportunity for families to hear traditional Chinese stories from a local storyteller and a variety of Chinese inspired arts and crafts activities will also be on offer. Workshops will take place on the hour from 2pm and places will be limited.

CHINESE PAPER LANTERNS IMPORTANT WARNING Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue and the University of Nottingham do not support the use or sale of lanterns from Highfields Park. Please note that University of Nottingham Security staff will be patrolling the park and anyone selling these lanterns will be asked to leave. The launching of lanterns is also prohibited for reasons of health and safety.

CHINESE PAPER LANTERNS IMPORTANT WARNING Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue and the University of Nottingham do not support the use or sale of lanterns from Highfields Park. Please note that University of Nottingham Security staff will be patrolling the park and anyone selling these lanterns will be asked to leave. The launching of lanterns is also prohibited for reasons of health and safety.

Broxtowe Borough Council in partnership with the Beeston Bid and Bartons are inviting families and individuals to attend a FREE afternoon of interactive workshops and fantastic performances. Activities and shows will be suitable for all ages and abilities so come along and have a go. Broxtowe Community Celebration Group will be at the event to share information about Chinese New Year and other New Year cultural and religious festivals and there will be an opportunity to buy a souvenir of the day at our Chinese Trinket Stall. This will include working with young male dancers drawn from several Centres for Advanced Training (CAT) across England, including the East Midlands, to create an original new dance work which will be performed on the outdoor stage at Chinese New Year 2011 at Lakeside on Sunday 6 February. Children across Nottingham, Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe Schools have been invited to make rabbits in schools and at Chinese New Year events to help celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. If you’d like to join in, then you are welcome to make your own air-dry clay rabbit at home, and to bring it to the event on the night and add it to the installation that evening. Rabbits can be collected to take home following conclusion of the fireworks.

Dragon boat racing has its origins in ancient China and can trace its history back some 2,000 years. Today it is a thriving sport, and this is a great opportunity to meet members of the hugely successful Notts Anaconda Dragon Boat team, to talk to them about their sport, and to see one of their prized Dragon boats. BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL SCHOOLS RESIDENCY PROGRAMME Dance residency Renowned dance artists Du Dan and Jenny Edwards will be working collaboratively for the first time to develop a unique fusion of traditional Chinese and contemporary dance to be performed by pupils from a Broxtowe school at the Beeston Square event on Saturday 5 and the finale Chinese New Year event at Lakeside on the evening of Sunday 6 February. Parade residency Once again we unite artists Ling Peng and Melvyn Rawlinson to create a unique processional performance involving visual arts, Chinese percussion and performance. Working with pupils from a Broxtowe school , the final result can be viewed from 10.50am as the children gather at Broadgate Park – then follow the procession along the pedestrian High Road for a finale parade around Beeston Square. The artwork created during this residency will be exhibited during the afternoon, from 1pm until 4pm at Bartons as part of the attractions at the Chinese Cultural Event.

BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL SCHOOLS RESIDENCY PROGRAMME Dance residency Renowned dance artists Du Dan and Jenny Edwards will be working collaboratively for the first time to develop a unique fusion of traditional Chinese and contemporary dance to be performed by pupils from a Broxtowe school at the Beeston Square event on Saturday 5 and the finale Chinese New Year event at Lakeside on the evening of Sunday 6 February. Parade residency Once again we unite artists Ling Peng and Melvyn Rawlinson to create a unique processional performance involving visual arts, Chinese percussion and performance. Working with pupils from a Broxtowe school , the final result can be viewed from 10.50am as the children gather at Broadgate Park – then follow the procession along the pedestrian High Road for a finale parade around Beeston Square. The artwork created during this residency will be exhibited during the afternoon, from 1pm until 4pm at Bartons as part of the attractions at the Chinese Cultural Event.

CHINESE DRAGONS AND LANTERNS Gedling Borough Council and Gedling Play Forum will be hosting an event for families in Arnot Hill Park inspired by the Chinese New Year. There will be an opportunity for families to hear traditional Chinese stories from a local storyteller and a variety of Chinese inspired arts and crafts activities will also be on offer. Workshops will take place on the hour from 2pm and places will be limited.

• Welcome Lion Dance at 1pm. • Three performances of the puppet show ‘A Very Chinese Puzzle at the Festival of the Dragon Moon’ at 1.30, 2.30 and 3.30pm • Ling Peng plays Chinese Classical Music on the Erhu (Chinese Violin), with Xiao Ying on the Guzheng at 2.10 and 3.10pm.

Sat 5 Feb, from 10am - 3.30pm Follow the lantern trail along Chilwell Road where many businesses will be offering an authentic Chinese experience to visitors. Visit all businesses displaying lanterns in their window and receive a special gift at the Chinese Cultural Event at Bartons.

Throughout the afternoon have a go at a variety of hands-on activities, stalls and ‘taster’ sessions including Chinese Arts and Crafts, Chinese Brush Painting, Traditional tea ceremony and tasting, Calligraphy, Paper Folding and make your own Chinese New Year clay rabbit.

CHINESE PAPER LANTERNS IMPORTANT WARNING Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue and the University of Nottingham do not support the use or sale of lanterns from Highfields Park. Please note that University of Nottingham Security staff will be patrolling the park and anyone selling these lanterns will be asked to leave. The launching of lanterns is also prohibited for reasons of health and safety.

Broxtowe Borough Council in partnership with the Beeston Bid and Bartons are inviting families and individuals to attend a FREE afternoon of interactive workshops and fantastic performances. Activities and shows will be suitable for all ages and abilities so come along and have a go. Broxtowe Community Celebration Group will be at the event to share information about Chinese New Year and other New Year cultural and religious festivals and there will be an opportunity to buy a souvenir of the day at our Chinese Trinket Stall. Don’t forget to claim your prize if you have explored the Lantern Trail!

Lakeside is delighted to welcome the return of Chongqing-based choreographer, dancer and teacher Rong Tao to the East Midlands in January 2011. During a three-week period, Rong Tao will be leading creative workshops with a range of different community, student and school groups. This will include working with young male dancers drawn from several Centres for Advanced Training (CAT) across England, including the East Midlands, to create an original new dance work which will be performed on the outdoor stage at Chinese New Year 2011 at Lakeside on Sunday 6 February. Additionally, Rong Tao will work with the digital media artist Barret Hodgson of Vent Media (www.ventmedia.co.uk) to create a new dance/video work for presentation on 6 February.

EXHIBITION OF BRUSH PAINTING & CALLIGRAPHY BY CATHY WU Cathy Wu (Chinese name Yat Ming Ho) was born in Chengdu, Sichuan and brought up in Hong Kong. She studied Chinese calligraphy under Master calligrapher and painter Lin Chien Shi in. She has exhibited in Hong Kong, London, Manchester, Liverpool and Wirral, where she has given talks and workshops. In 2007, she was commissioned to write ‘The Chinese Calligraphy Sourcebook’ which was published by Apple Press in Britain; ‘The Chinese Calligraphy Bible’ by Barrons in the US, and by Simon and Schuster in Australia. CHINESE ZODIAC PYRAMID LANTERNS We’re delighted to display a set of 12 illuminated pyramid lanterns - featuring the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, which were so popular at last year’s event. Members of Nottingham Chinese Students and Scholars Association will help you to discover which animal you are.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS CULMINATING WITH FIREWORKS FINALE

Children across Nottingham, Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe Schools have been invited to make rabbits in schools and at Chinese New Year events to help celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. If you’d like to join in, then you are welcome to make your own air-dry clay rabbit at home, and to bring it to the event on the night and add it to the installation that evening. Rabbits can be collected to take home following conclusion of the fireworks.

Dragon boat racing has its origins in ancient China and can trace its history back some 2,000 years. Today it is a thriving sport, and this is a great opportunity to meet members of the hugely successful Notts Anaconda Dragon Boat team, to talk to them about their sport, and to see one of their prized Dragon boats. The concept for Whispers From a Rickshaw was initially conceived after a trip to Southern China in 2008. A group of boys playing table tennis on a stone table with bricks for a net-triggered curiosity about what these boys dreams were and whether one of them could be or aspire to be a table tennis player in the London 2012 Olympics.

CHINESE NEW YEAR GALA 2011 FEATURING NANJING LITTLE RED FLOWER ARTS TROUPE Tickets £7 (£5 concessions) Running time: approximately 100 minutes including an interval Nanjing Little Red flowers, also known as Nanjing Xiao Hong Hua, are a household name in China. The troupe is one of China’s first children’s art institutions that combine formal education with artistic performance. They have won various awards at national and local children’s dance and music competitions, and toured over 20 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, America and Africa. Join us to experience the magic from the city of Nanjing and taste a sample of traditional Chinese dance and musical culture.
