RISING TRUMPET STAR REVISITS CLASSIC JAZZ STYLES Jay Phelps co-founder of the band Empirical now embarks on his solodebut Jay Walkin’. Jay departs from the current trend of experimental modernism, occasionally evoking the spirit of the 1940’s New York Birdland scene with playful vocals by showman-vocalist Michael Mwenso. Setting out to honour the integrity and capture what is the traditional spirit of Jazz music, Jay has chosen a stellar line-up consisting of a generational mix of London’s top jazz musicians, including BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Shabaka Hutchings.

Kit Downes is one of the most in demand young pianists on the UK scene, and is beginning to get the kind of enthusiastic attention Gwilym Simcock did on his emergence a few years before. His 2010 album Golden was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Backed by the subtle touches of bassist Calum Gourlay and drummer James Maddren, the trio is here expanded to form a new sextet performing original compositions. “Downes is more of a choosy, patient storyteller, and if one of his distinctive original themes only requires a handful of notes and a lot of spaces, he leaves it like that.” John Fordham, The Guardian

MODERN JAZZ FROM EDITION RECORDS’ FLAGSHIP BAND
JAZZ/WORLD MUSIC GUITAR MAESTRO
As compelling and powerful live as they are on record, Dave Stapleton Quintet released their third album Between the Lines in 2010 to rave reviews. Stapleton has gained a reputation as an ambitious composer – his contemporary high energy jazz, with its powerful riffs and melodic hooks, echoes the excitement of 1960s Blue Note bebop.
In a career spanning four decades, flamenco jazz guitar virtuoso and composer Eduardo Niebla has been acclaimed as one of the most potent forces in flamenco jazz fusion today. His music combines his flamenco gypsy jazz roots with Indian, Arabic, classical and modern jazz influences to produce the most electrifying and poignantly poetic guitar playing.
“Stapleton draws on a wide range of enthusiasms, from Herbie Hancock’s 1970s Mwandishi band to Keith Jarrett’s quartet with Jan Garbarek.” John Fordham, The Guardian
“A display of supernatural talent… and a spellbinding mixture of flamenco and modern jazz, bursting with passion and verve.” The Spectator
