ART 04 DJANOGLY ART GALLERY
Image: where the bears are sleeping 2010
SATURDAY 12 MARCH - MONDAY 2 MAY ADMISSION FREE
VISITOR GIBSON/MARTELLI (IGLOO) VISITOR is a newly commissioned installation by artists Ruth Gibson and Bruno Martelli (igloo).
Inspired by the artists’ travels to the snow-driven mountains of the Canadian Rockies, VISITOR was developed following research at The Banff Arts Centre. The exhibition plays with apprehensions of different forms of reality, bringing exterior virtual space into the physical space of the gallery by employing techniques used in video games.
05
Comprised of two works - where the bears are sleeping and Vermilion Lake VISITOR portrays visions of mountain landscapes inviting the viewer to experience a sense of wonder amidst the frozen lakes and forests. It is an investigation into the experience of place, figure and landscape, where real and invented panoramas depict the beauty and strangeness of the natural world. And within this world we become aware of a presence which could be a friendly or malevolent force, suggesting the hunter being hunted, the tracker being tracked.
VISITOR is a touring exhibition produced in association with artsdepot. Commissioned by The Henry Moore Foundation and Arts Council England. Supported by The Banff Centre, Canada.

Gibson and Martelli work together as igloo creating ambiguous topographies and relationships between the natural and the artificial. Re-purposing media tools and combining them with re-modelled objects, prints and interrupted surfaces, they simulate and reconfigure representations of the world. The artists’ installations, video works, online projects and performances have featured in international exhibitions and festivals including the 52nd Venice Biennale.

DJANOGLY ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM We are very pleased to announce that during summer 2011, there will be some refurbishment work to the Djanogly Art Gallery building resulting in improved new, and shared facilities for the Gallery and the Museum of Archaeology which will be joining the Lakeside complex at the south entrance towards the end of the year. Unfortunately this means that we will need to temporarily suspend our exhibitions programme in order that the work can be carried out. Please watch our website for further details.

Ossuary 2010
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE KASHIF NADIM CHAUDRY Kashif Nadim Chaudry became the fourth artist-in-residence at Lakeside Arts Centre in November 2010, and will be working in the studio for a 12-month period producing a new body of work to be shown in a major exhibition in the Djanogly Art Gallery in Autumn 2011. With a family background in tailoring, Nadim studied textiles at Goldsmith’s College, London. His current practice is concerned with a search for the idea of the ‘sacred’ and all its entrapments. Playing with the traditions and ceremonies of his Pakistani Muslim heritage, as well as investigating a further marginalised identity as a British born gay man, Nadim’s work raises questions around adornment, sexuality and the performances of religious and cultural ritual.
We welcome enquiries from schools/colleges or other groups interested in making a studio visit to meet Nadim, and perhaps combining this with an arts based activity at Lakeside. By appointment only, please book by contacting Ruth Lewis-Jones, Learning Officer (Galleries) on 0115 823 2218.

NEW WORK BY NICK MOBBS Nick Mobbs' work subverts the methods and rituals of childhood play to conjure feelings of both nostalgia and anxiety. His images are deliberately ambiguous, leaving us uncertain of the nature or purpose of what confronts us. Nick studied Fine Art Printmaking at Loughborough University School of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art. He is a tutor on the Fine Art BA course at the University of Nottingham and his work was recently included in New Contemporaries (Liverpool and London, 2010/11). HOME AND ABROAD MAPS FROM THE HISTORIC COLLECTIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM Maps provide a fascinating point of entry to different cultures and different times. Though their function was often practical, demonstrating ownership and land management, they can also be works of beauty and imagination.

Scattered through the archives and rare book collections at the University of Nottingham are many examples of maps, from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. While each item tells its own story of creation and use, the narrative of the display concerns the people of the Midlands, their knowledge of the physical world and the significance of maps in their lives. The common theme is often one of property and power, but items also illustrate the development of communities in a rural landscape and the pace of urban growth. At an international level we see political aspirations and British perceptions of foreign lands. This display looks back from our current familiarity with satellite navigation and digital mapping to celebrate an age of physical maps, in exhibits ranging from the simplicity of a few sketched lines and scribbled names to sophisticated examples of cartographic publication.
TUESDAY 24 MAY THE ART OF MAPPING AND THE CULTURE OF CARTOGRAPHY Professor Stephen Daniels, School of Geography, surveys relations between mapping, the visual arts and imaginative literature, to explore the wider culture of cartography in Britain since the 18th century. MONDAY 13 JUNE RECONSTRUCTING THE TOWNSCAPE OF NOTTINGHAM USING CONTEMPORARY MAPS Historians work from documents, but maps are both documents and pictorial representations of places ‘on the ground’. Using contemporary maps and plans, Professor John Beckett, School of History, will show how we can reconstruct the townscape of Nottingham from the medieval period to the present day. WEDNESDAY 29 JUNE MAPS AND WAR Professor Mike Heffernan, School of Geography, explores the relationship between cartography and warfare from the 18th century to the present.

FOUR MEN & A DOG Gino Lupari, percussion Donal Murphy, accordion Gerry O’Connor, banjo Cathal Hayden, fiddle Kevin Doherty, lead vocals Four Men & A Dog are true legends of Irish music. Their fiery sets of traditional tunes are second to none for their precision and power, while the songs are full of surprise - anything from evocative ballads to American folk songs to acoustic rock n’ roll.
Four Men & A Dog play only a very selective number of dates each year and rarely tour in England, so this is a genuinely rare chance to catch one of Irish music’s great acts. Each musician is widely regarded as one of the finest on his instrument anywhere in Irish music, and none more so than frontman Gino Lupari. His unique ability to engage an audience, making them feel part of the show, not just spectators, makes him a complete one-off and one of Irish music’s real characters. “The best party to be found anywhere in Ireland.” Irish Music magazine

Anatol Liadov draws on Slavonic folk legends for his ballet music for Kikimora and The Enchanted Lake, which are nowadays heard more often in their versions as orchestral miniatures. Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony was commissioned for his 50th birthday celebration, a national holiday in Finland. Its stirring finale is particularly remembered for the glorious hymn which was said to be inspired by the sight of a flock of swans. The concert finishes at approximately 9pm

PRESENTS
BY DAVID MAMET
“Mamet continues his exploration of male-female conflicts. John & Carol go to it with hand to hand combat that amounts to a primal struggle for power. The vehicle for that combat is crackling, highly distilled dialogue unencumbered by literary frills or phony theatrical ones” Frank Rich, International Herald Tribune
Main photo: Tom Partridge
OLEANNA is often referred to as Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s most controversial drama. Electrifying dialogue and blazing emotion create a riveting play in which a college professor and his female student become embroiled in a war of words that takes a dangerous turn.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL BY MICHAEL MORPURGO ADAPTED & DIRECTED BY SIMON READE
Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were courtmartialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War. “An infinitely touching, intensely acted account of a young First World War Soldier’s final day.” ***** Sunday Express “...this is one hour of your own life you will never forget.” Daily Mail

New Box Office On 10th January we opened with a new Box Office and Marketing system called Tessitura. Tess (as we like to call her) has been installed under the direction of Ticketing Network East Midlands (TNEM), a new four member consortium: Dance4, Lakeside, Nottingham Playhouse and Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall Nottingham. Tess will enable improved communications with customers, collaborative opportunities for joint promotions and the Select Your Own Seat function for all four venues. The installation of this new online booking system and SYOS function means that online bookings will not be open until the end of March. We apologise for any inconvience the suspension of online booking may cause.
