Wednesday 24 April – Sunday 9 June Djanogly Art Gallery Admission free The First Cut is a major exhibition featuring new and recent works by over 30 international contemporary artists who work with paper in revolutionary ways. It explores how established and emerging artists are transforming the humble scrap of paper - through cutting, folding and sculpting - into amazingly powerful creations that could be destroyed with a single tear. The title alludes to the beginning of the creative process but also suggests a violent and sinister action, which is reflected in the themes explored in the exhibition. Fragility and beauty sit side by side with dark fairytale imagery, sinister scenes and stark political comment. The artists featured cite a diverse range of influences on their work, from globalisation and environmentalism, sexuality and slavery to architecture, fashion, fairytales and death metal.
The exhibition features a number of brand new commissions including a three-metre paper cut by British artist Rob Ryan. Further new works, produced specially for the exhibition, are by some of the world’s most important contemporary artists working with paper today: Mia Pearlman (US); James Aldridge (Sweden); Andreas Kocks (Germany); Justine Smith (UK); and Yuken Teruya (Japan). Every type of paper is used, from the handmade to the mass produced, including books, magazines, wallpaper, maps and even money. The artworks vary dramatically in size and form, from the miniature to the fully immersive, but all transform a basic material into fantastical works of art with high levels of craftsmanship and obsessive detail. Chris P Wood: Unseen Works
Leeds-based artist, Chris P Wood, brings together traditional Renaissance painting techniques and skilled draughtsmanship with an abstract, often expressionistic, sensibility to create works with rich, emotional colours, fantastical landscapes and a sense of the surreal, or uncanny. The title Unseen Works relates to a collection of previously unexhibited paintings showing alongside new works created especially for the exhibition, but is equally applicable to the sense of mystery that pervades his landscapes with their angelic and shamanistic figures. A touring exhibition organized by the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, University of Leeds.

Nottinghamshire’s People Ancestral Stories from the Archives Tracing our ancestors has proved a fascinating challenge for generations. Some researchers have sought evidence to establish a claim to a title, but increasing numbers pursue family history as a hobby, and want to know more about the lives and times of their forebears. Whether they were humble agricultural labourers, local dignitaries or incorrigible criminals, they all have a story to tell. This exhibition celebrates the lives of Nottinghamshire’s people and communities. It tells about very different experiences. George Africanus was a former slave who came to Nottingham and became its first black entrepreneur. Robert Weatherall, by contrast, was a local boy from an agricultural family who went on to study at Christ’s College, Cambridge. Family historians today can draw on rich internet resources, but ‘Nottinghamshire’s People’ showcases the original documents that provide the evidence for ancestral research. Through church records, private papers, maps, wills and many other sources, it uncovers a rich world that lies beyond the indexes of census and birth, marriage and death records. Visitors can see the historic Guild Roll of St Mary, Nottingham, dated 1371, on view for the first time since its purchase in 2006. The roll identifies the men and women who joined the guild that provided help in times of sickness and unemployment. The exhibition has been jointly curated by staff from Nottinghamshire Archives and Manuscripts and Special Collections at The University of Nottingham.
Wednesday 3rd July Weaving my Family Tapestry With characters ranging from local weavers to Cambridge graduates, enthusiastic genealogist and adulteducation teacher Jenni Dobson explores the threads of her own family history beyond BMDs. Wednesday 7th August Unlocking the Parish Chest: Parish Records and Family History Did your ancestors work on local roads, serve as a parish constable, or become a parish apprentice? Were they baptised, married or buried at a local church? Peter Lester, archivist at Nottinghamshire Archives, uncovers the fascinating information for family historians kept in the parish chest. Wednesday 14th August Kinship and Connectedness: the Social and Personal Impact of Geneology. Dr Anne-Marie Kramer, Lecturer at the University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Social Science, explores the meaning and significance of the recent boom in popularity of genealogy, from the personal impact on family historians and their families, to its influence on British society.

Lysistrata
Based on a translation from Aristophanes by Alan Sommerstein Directed by Martin Berry The ancient world is gripped by a seemingly interminable war. With the men of Athens all serving in the forces, the women of the city can take no more. In secret, they meet with the enemy women and form a pact. The battle moves into the bedroom. No sex for the men - unless the women get peace. Lysistrata is the original battle of the sexes and its themes of feminism, power and politics are as relevant now as they were in ancient Greece. Lakeside and New Theatre are thrilled to be working on a first collaborative theatre project marrying the talents of the University’s student-run theatre company with a professional team including direction, design, stage management, education and marketing.

Facing a dwindling congregation, an uncompromising Church Warden and a lonely widower; pleasing everyone, including his wife Mel, is proving rather difficult. Enter Kevin, a mysterious and enigmatic stranger who turns up on the church's doorstep, seeking a place to shelter. Who is this mysterious man? Where has he come from? And where is he going? Kevin’s sudden arrival leaves a lasting impact on the entire community and rocks the delicate foundations of Stephen's faith. Entertaining Angels is a humorous and touching look at the role of the Church in contemporary village life, and what it really means to be a Christian in the 21st Century.

A right load of old stuff and nonsense An exhibition of Puppets and machines built by Marc Parrett
Marc Parrett is a puppet maker... a designer… and a bit of a musician. He draws pictures of the things he sees in his head when he sits on the bus or train and then makes them when he gets back to his workshop. He sometimes writes stories about the things he's drawn, and even writes songs that fit the stories. There aren't any songs in this exhibition. But there are things that Marc has made. Marc Parrett lives in Dorset and makes puppets for Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company and Pinsize Productions. Marc hopes you enjoy this exhibition, that you’ll add your comments and stories, and perhaps even make your own things at home afterwards. www.aloadofstuffandnonsense.com Follow Pinsize on Twitter @pinsizefilms

Joe Moran: FORWARD My Brother the Robot – three works for stage and gallery Once upon a time in the future there will be a little girl called Bobbie who lives with her inventor dad in a house filled with technology. They’ll have everything they need until one day Bobbie says she’s lonely and wishes she had a little brother. So, her dad locks himself in his lab and works night and day to create a very special present … a robot little brother! Bobbie loves her little brother and tells him all about how the world works, but when Bobbie gets into danger one day – will her robot brother save her?
A great new show from Tall Stories (The Gruffalo, The Snail and the Whale) combining music, humour and great storytelling.
A fresh voice in British dance, choreographer Joe Moran (semifinalist Place Prize 2012) brings three distinctive new dance works to Lakeside’s Djanogly Gallery 2, and theatre. Beginning in the gallery, Survey is a compelling solo for dancer Marina Collard which contrasts abstract movement against the physicality of the dancer. In the theatre, Obverse, commissioned for The Place Prize, is a powerful trio danced to a striking score in which dancers’ physical and perceptual virtuosity is tested from one moment to the next. The Swarm Duet plays on the edges of chance to set free the poetry and immediacy of dance. ‘Moran's interpretation explodes with the energy and insouciance of youth The Globe and Mail (Canada) ‘He expresses his own willfully deviant dance vocabulary’ www.londondance.com Presented in partnership with Obverse was commissioned for The Place Prize for dance sponsored by Bloomberg
