How I Lake? Defining Smith Lake

The definition of Smith Lake is different to all, and varies by whom you ask, and according to how they celebrate life on the lake. For most everyone, the lake is a happy place, a place of good memories, and a place that is cherished. It’s a place people go to just BE. Whether that “BE” is the routine of a fisherman, a mom of a tuber anxiously looking back at all times, a wakeboarder/ watersports enthusiast working hard on a new trick or mastering a specific discipline, a busy dad who always has the boat ready to go, a doting grandparent, or the hostess with the most-est, having all her friends over for the weekend; or just the occasional visitor who revels in all the scenery of the lake with camera in hand. Smith Lake activities widely vary among all, and the enjoyment of the lake means different things to every person. At the end of the day, for those who love this lake, we all have a common interest at heart, our deep-rooted affection for our lake, and our acceptance and appreciation of how others enjoy their lake days. Seeing someone’s story through social media is how moments are shared today. Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to interact with lake lovers all over this great lake. Just as each person’s definition of Smith Lake is different, so is “how they lake.” Stay tuned as we share some of our favorite Smith Lake activities by families, groups, individuals, pets, businesses, all those who “lake.” Let us hear from you about your Smith Lake experiences using the hashtag #howilake. See you lakeside!

THE MIDDLE NAMED LAKE Photo courtesy of Rob Beckman

If you’ve seen the grandeur of Smith Lake’s emerald green water, then it likely comes as no surprise that The Alabama Water Watch rates our lake the #1 cleanest lake in the State of Alabama. The beauty that attracts lake lovers is the result of creeks that deposit into Smith Lake from water filtered by the Bankhead National Forest and the Sipsey River; and, combined, these two waterways flow into the main channel of Smith Lake. Yet, despite the rating of 3rd cleanest lake in the United States, many still regard Lewis Smith Lake as the “other” lake. Whether you are a local, or a weekender, you’ve heard references to “our side” and “their side,” to “the Cullman County side,” the “Walker County side,” and “the Winston County side.” The references to these sides may have sometimes been your own, and I admit I’ve been guilty of this slip in past conversations. It’s not to say the sides of the lake are at odds, they aren’t; but the benefits that come from crossing sides could greatly improve our chances at making the upcoming changes great ones. By making a conscious effort to unify invisible boundaries, we can build a stronger foundation for the place we hold so dear. Even with all its beauty and sprawling 642 miles of shoreline, Smith Lake has been missing something for quite some time. Many would tell you it’s the inability to sell alcohol, or the lack of eating establishments for lake patrons to socialize. Recently passed legislation eliminates that theory as the culprit. In fact, the recent and forthcoming changes brought about as the result of Senate Bill 322 – which allows alcoholic beverages to be served at marinas meeting qualifications on Smith Lake within Cullman, Walker, and Winston counties, even though those counties are dry – are said to increase property value over the next few years, bringing growth and economic development to the lake area. So, what’s missing? The answer should be evident to anyone who lives in the area, to the families who have been coming for years, and perhaps to the newcomers too. Smith Lake clearly lacks a true sense of unity and community. With the new life that has come to Smith Lake in the last decade, the once quiet lake has grown louder with increased traffic. Smith Lake is no longer a secret.

Whether you’re the fisherman waking up at 4am to cast your line before the workday, or the family who has invested in a weekend home to unplug and make precious memories of wakeboarding and other watersports with their children, or the dad preparing the boat for cruising with his grown children, or the boater mapping out the quickest way to visit all his friends’ docks in one day, or the elderly gentleman who sat and watched the dam fill up in 1961, or the grandmother whose days involve more porch-sitting than time on the water, or the family member from out of town telling friends back home that they’ve never seen water so clear – it doesn’t matter. We all want our memories here to be full of happiness and love, and how we make them is up to us – keeping in mind that we all “lake” in our own uniquely varied ways. Like the water that feeds into the main channel from varying creeks, we come to the lake with different interests; but, we can come together in our love for this awe-inspiring place. We can create a unity and bond whose depth mirrors the beauty and expanse of Lewis Smith Lake’s 264-foot-deep emerald water – our lake, the lake that goes by its middle name. Welcome, we hope you join us as we embark on this new journey of showcasing our beautiful Smith Lake! Follow along with us on social media until our first full edition arrives in early 2018. Big Big Changes

for Smith Lake

For those of you who have yearned for lakeside dining and entertaining, good

things are coming!

For years, the only thing that our beautiful Smith Lake has been missing is

widespread lakeside dining and entertainment with cocktails, a lakeside luxury

that so many other lakes have been taking advantage of for a very long time. With

all the other things Smith Lake has to offer, there is nothing like pulling your boat

up to the marina for a dinner and drinks out with your friends and family.

On May 25, 2017, Governor Kay Ivy signed Senate Bill 322 into law, enabling

marinas with 30+ boat slips, and restaurants with a seating capacity of 50 inside

& 50 outside, to hold an on-premise beverage license, even though the counties in

which they reside are dry. With the term “on-premise” clearly being defined as onsite

consumption with no carryout sales of alcohol. Senate Bill 322 also explicitly creates

districts on the lake for on-premises consumption of alcohol 7 days a week; with the obvious being stated, that it is still illegal to consume alcohol or have alcohol aboard while operating a watercraft. Without a doubt, this legislation will have a positive economic impact in the tri-county area, bringing not only fun and entertainment, but also building a community among lake patrons. These establishments will create a common place for folks to gather and join in fellowship with all others who share a common love for Smith Lake, not to mention the additional tax dollars! To date, Smith Lake now has two restaurants serving both food and alcohol, “Golddiggers” at The Lakeshore Inn & Marina in Double Springs, along with “The Grille” at Trident Marina in Crane Hill. Both establishments have a full menu with live entertainment on select weekend nights. More information on their events can be found on their respective websites or through social media. The law changes will certainly encourage other marina and community developments to open new restaurants and offer regular entertainment, bringing even more ways to enjoy and celebrate life here on gorgeous Smith Lake.

Healthy Dose of Fun at

Pine Valley Outdoors For the past five years, Pine Valley Pools has been located on Curry Highway, beside its sister company, Pine Valley Landscaping, which is accredited for more than 20+ years of quality work in the Walker County area. Owner, Rich Gregory, had a different vision he wanted to bring to life, a vision of promoting both outdoor living and wellness, at the same time. With the company’s deep roots serving Smith Lake, and the surrounding area, primarily in the outdoor industry, providing outdoor rentals and lake toys was a natural transition. Therefore, earlier this summer, Pine Valley Pools became Pine Valley Outdoor Living, with Ella Banks as the General Manager.

10

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

After seeing the hydrobike on HGTV, Rich quickly knew the first product he wanted to bring to Smith Lake. The hydrobike is unique, a great source of exercise, and provides a new way to explore the lake. Hyrdobikes are sold for around $2,000.00. Not wanting to get into the retail business of selling these bikes, they have opted to make them affordable by renting them. The next products the team opted to make accessible for rentals were kayaks, paddleboards, and paddleboats; and since then, they have added kneeboards, water trampolines, banana boats, tubes, and more. Shortly after purchasing a towable banana boat, they quickly had to buy another one, to keep up with the demand. In addition to rentals, Pine Valley Outdoor Living also has a selection of inflatables and other lake toys for purchase in their retail shop. With the summer coming to a close, Pine Valley Outdoor Living will be shifting gears into fall with a focus on kayaking, paddleboats, and hydrobikes. All three of these can be enjoyed while staying relatively dry, allowing you to enjoy the lakeside life from an autumn point of view. In addition to their rentals, Pine Valley Outdoor Living will also be hosting an Annual Kayak Bass Tournament on Smith Lake. They hope to crown the first BadBass Kayak King or Queen on October 28, 2017. Early bird registration is now open for $35 per person and will increase to $40 after the 23rd of October. Check out Pine Valley’s social media for rules and regulations. To register, and for more details, contact Pine Valley Outdoor Living at 205.221.7463. With all our lake has to offer, Pine Valley Outdoor Living’s lineup of lake toy rentals is a great addition of “things to do,” and they are available to deliver the rentals, both by land or water. Give them a call today, then get outside and be active! Follow Pine Valley Outdoor Living on Facebook and Instagram for special rental promotions! Location: 3088 Curry Highway, Jasper

Modern Living on Smith Lake

16

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

Approaching Mandy and Shawn Crider’s family home on Smith Lake is much the way you approach a five-star restaurant dinner: feast with your eyes first. Aside from the obvious—breathtaking water-and-woods surroundings— the tranquil, creative landscaping amidst the natural beauty whispers something special is just beyond. A driveway gives way to vast soybean fields to the left and a grand porch up the sidewalk ahead, complete with brick columns, a swing, and Ruger—the Criders’ wagging welcome puppy. Inside, the view is no less spectacular. The entire first floor ceiling spans two stories (32 feet!), with upstairs bedrooms perched around the perimeter. A mixed media approach—polished concrete floors and countertops, brick and reclaimed wood walls, a metal staircase, industrial lighting, exposed ductwork, and steel beams—creates an almost minimalist, airy feel that holds its own against the breathtaking water views.

“We love the view, and that is why nearly every room in the house was oriented to take advantage of it,” says Shawn. thelakesidelife.com | The Lakeside Life

17

A Cook’s Kitchen The expansive, open-concept downstairs is broken into three main sections for cooking, dining, and lounging. Long kitchen countertops and a freestanding painted bar provide plenty of prep space in the kitchen, which is tucked into one end of the room. Smooth poured concrete and textured brick mimic the natural elements outdoors, but the Criders couldn’t resist a tiny touch of glam in the form of a not-so-tiny, five-burner, black-and-bronze oven, even if it’s not exactly what they had in mind. “We originally ordered the oven in a different color, but when it came in, it was the wrong one,” says Mandy. “Rather than wait longer for the original color we wanted, we settled on this one—and now I can’t imagine any other look!” The La Cornue French range sparkles like a jewel, crowning the cooking space with just the right amount of shine.

18

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

Dining for Two (or Three or More) You can’t miss the Criders’ massive monochromatic dining area, slightly elevated above the concrete floors on a slab of stained wood planks. Its unique U-shaped

wooden banquette is divided by two built-in wood tables. Four upholstered blue-gray chairs are the only pops of color, the hue reminiscent of the home’s majestic water views.

“I wish I could take credit for the banquette design, but it was all Cherri [the Criders’ architect; see sidebar],” says Mandy. “She found a picture of a restaurant with

All About the Architect “Shawn and I actually met about a year or so before he approached me to help him and Mandy with their design,” says architect Cherri Pitts, AIA, NCARB, of Studio C Architecture & Interiors in Birmingham (studiocarch.com). “I had just finished another home on Smith Lake and my clients were hosting their first dinner party there; Shawn and I were both guests.” Before long, Cherri and Shawn were deep in conversation about his dream of building a steel structure-inspired home on a lot with spectacular views. “My curiosity was instantly piqued,” says Cherri. “Shawn knows how to get an architect’s attention!” After the foundation was poured and Shawn wanted to make sure every single detail was accurate, he called Cherri back, and the two began to hammer out design plans. A few of Cherri’s favorite features include the second-floor steel-and-glass pivot door walls that open to a long balcony overlooking downstairs, the vaultedceiling bunk room that turned into its own hangout for the college kids, and the lake lounge. However, “the best part,” says Cherri, “is that the home truly represents the fun spirits of Mandy and Shawn and their love of the lake and the surrounding rural landscape.”

a brick interior and these really cool rustic booths. As soon as she showed me there was no question we were designing a booth to fit that space. It’s so fabulous!” thelakesidelife.com | The Lakeside Life

19

Cozy Lake Living Adjacent to the dining space, the laid-back living area fronts the lake views and is bathed in natural light. Three levels of steel-trimmed windows, set off by a custom brick fireplace and mantel, reach to the pecky cypress ceiling and frame the expansive vistas of Smith Lake. A plush sofa, leather chair, and plenty of pillows encourage after-dinner lounging. A nearby pool table hosts friendly competitions when Shawn’s family joins he and Mandy for themed dinner parties. Most recently, family members were required to bring dishes that cost $2.50 or less per serving. “We dressed up boxed mashed potatoes,” says Mandy. “So fun!” Adds Shawn, “I have a good friend who was a mess sergeant in the National Guard, and he taught me how to make them. He said no one will ever know unless you tell them— and he was right.” Past the pool table and through a sliding barn door is Mandy and Shawn’s “chill spot,” complete with a lounge area, mini-gym, half-bath, and full bar which Shawn completed himself after the couple moved in (see sidebar). Of particular note is the halfbath’s unique sink. Like all the sinks in the Criders’ home, this one is a concrete form that slopes slightly toward a flush rectangular drain. The sink is held in place by heavy chains suspended from the ceiling.

20

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

Crider Crisp (Makes: 1 drink) Cheers to Fall Mandy and Shawn’s signature home bar mirrors the rest of the lakefront house’s style with elements of cozy rustic and mod industrial for a space that is the Criders’ own version of Cheers. Walking through the sliding barn door, reclaimed wood walls and polished concrete floors wrap the room in a warm-cool vibe, while pieces such as a corrugated metal table and barstools, wood-and-rope shelving, and cage-light pendants with bare bulbs play into the warm-meetscool vibe. A heavy mirror borrowed from another bedroom’s furniture suite adds depth on top of the bar; painted black lower cabinets break up the surrounding wood and dress up the space a bit. On

the opposite end of the room, a comfy velvet sofa and large upholstered ottoman face an exposed brick wall where a big TV is always tuned—during the fall anyway—to Alabama games. Of course, a signature bar must also serve a signature cocktail, and Shawn shared his favorite—nameless—concoction with us during a recent visit. The smooth sipper reminded us of the approaching season and, upon hearing there was no official drink name, we dubbed it the Crider Crisp—here’s to hoping the name sticks! Mix up the recipe below, and enjoy this drink at home as you watch the leaves change in your own backyard.

1.5 ounces Tito’s vodka 1.5 ounces Deep Eddy Orange vodka .5 ounce fresh lime juice 1 ounce fresh orange juice Diet tonic Garnish: fresh orange slice

Combine Tito’s vodka and next 3 ingredients; shake well. Pour over ice. Top with desired amount of diet tonic. Garnish with an orange slice.

“The Shawndelier” After searching for the perfect light and coming up empty, Shawn headed over to the business he runs with his brothers (HH Technologies in Bremen), grabbed a few pieces of leftover scrap metal, purchased a few work lights from Lowe’s, and sketched out his design. Using the sketch and incorporating those elements, an employee welded together the fixture. (The stair installation was also manufactured at Shawn’s fabrication building.)

Personal Space for a Crowd Upstairs is just as authentic and creative as downstairs, beginning with the staircase off the kitchen. Reclaimed wood steps—crafted from barn wood salvaged in Canada—are trimmed in iron. Though your back is to the lake as you make your way upstairs, the Criders made sure there was a different type of view: a magnificent custom chandelier designed by Shawn, hence its nickname “the Shawndelier.” In a comfy but elegant bedroom upstairs, a brushed leather recliner and cowhide rug ground the space with neutrals so the natural elements are still the main focus. An iron bed allows the reclaimed wood behind it to show through—a normal, heavier headboard would’ve hidden it. The anchoring reclaimed notched beam here runs the length of the metal truss and dazzles as a functional statement piece. The lights above the bed are surrounded by fishing baskets. An adjoining bath gets a 10 on the uniqueness scale with its shower built to resemble a barn. Trimmed in reclaimed wood, the shower opening is left bare; a gooseneck barn light fixture provides ample illumination inside. A slightly different take on the downstairs poured concrete sink (the kids aren’t quite tidy enough for the sink with a more subtle slope, says Shawn) and a row of smaller barn-style lights above complete the pretty bath. A guestroom partitioned into lounging and sleeping areas maximizes space for additional visitors. An extra-large memory foam bag and a mod sofa are perfect spots to snooze after a day on the lake. Around the half-wall, two built-in bunks with full-size beds on bottom and twins on top are cozy spots to curl up at night. Censored wall lights turn off and on with a simple touch, a luxe and unexpected detail. Hidden design tip: The Criders added a sliding door within the wall partition to cover a closet where guests can stash their stuff. A bathroom with a rainhead shower and double sinks are thoughtful touches guests will appreciate. Shawn designed the tile pattern with tiles purchased at Southeastern Salvage in Irondale.

23

Saving the upstairs best for last, the Criders’ master bedroom takes full advantage of the up-high views with a balcony that looks out over the downstairs living area and, of course, the gorgeous water beyond. A bistro table and chairs on the balcony are a great spot for Mandy and Shawn to sip coffee and start their day. (The couple stashed a mini-fridge and coffeemaker in their closet to prolong their walk downstairs in the mornings.) The balcony doors are swivel glass panels built by Shawn that give the Criders the option for more privacy without obstructing the views. In the bedroom, a dark wood bed and nightstands appear built in to the reclaimed wood and steel-trimmed wall that blocks off the master bath and closet. Another genius move: The Criders placed the washer and dryer in their closet, where the bulk of the laundry accumulates, making this chore a breeze. Not surprisingly, this spot is a favorite for the Criders. “We love having that glass wall that can open up to the main living area,” says Shawn. 24

Outdoor Living Not much is more important at a lake house than a spot to enjoy the surroundings, and the Criders’ back patio does not disappoint. In fact, it’s breathtaking. The Criders chose to keep the main thing—that view!—but other simple touches also make a big impact. A woodburning fireplace symmetrical to the one indoors is perfect for extending time outdoors on chilly fall nights. A cocktail table and chairs, chaise longues, and Adirondack rockers provide ample seating for a small crowd of family and friends to sit back and soak up the evening light. A low-profile hot tub sits further down toward the water. As you step onto the grass past the patio, the lot’s cliff shoots straight down to the water,

Take the Trolley The Criders’ house sits 120 feet above the lake. To avoid long treks back and forth to the dock, Mandy and Shawn installed a trolley system that

carries them (and guests!) to the boathouse.

The short ride comes with memorable views, too, as the trolley travels above a waterfall and

craggy rocks that run down the water path

and along the cliffside. “Having the trolley

just makes the trip to the dock so much more

enjoyable and practical,” says Shawn.

marking one of the most dramatic Smith Lake views we’ve ever seen. You can’t help but envy—just a bit—the Criders’ peaceful, perfect location. “Smith Lake is a hidden treasure,” says Shawn. “We have some of the prettiest shorelines you will find anywhere.”

Elevated Exterior The outside of the Criders’ home stands in quiet elegance against the natural landscape. By using a variety of materials instead of color to create texture and interest, the monochromatic scheme blends well with the surrounding water and tree line while also holding its own.

In addition to stately brick and a sprinkling of contemporary metal, the Criders worked with Oneonta quarry Alabama Wholesale Stone Company, who specially cut the stone that wraps the home’s facade. Brick columns, tapered at the top, on the front porch are a modern twist on a traditional element that also adds dimension to the home. On the back porch, more tapered brick columns and steel beams form an architectural frame that gives the house presence when looking back from the lake. The oversize, shutterless windows blend into the exterior but make a big impact inside, where they take full advantage of the water views. The clean lines of the metal roof and overhangs neatly tie together the entire look. Stephanie G. Lepore is a contributing writer for The Lakeside Life. Lepore is a mother of one, and she and her family live in Birmingham, AL. Photos of the Crider home and grounds are the artwork of Craig Hudson, owner of Hudson Photography. eing at the lake, combined with football season, calls for a spread of food in our house. Just as the seasons change, so do our go-to menus and recipes.

We have “lake menus” for entertaining, laying low with friends, and just relaxed family time. In the summer our dips are light and easy to pack for a day on the lake. In the fall they are warm and best from the oven - or in this dip’s case - from the skillet.

Cut cheese into small cubes and set aside. Remove chorizo from casing, and brown in a skillet. Drain well. Reduce to medium heat, adding cheeses, milk, and garlic salt. Cook and stir 8-10 minutes, or until well blended. Drain corn and rotel, adding both to the mixture. Cook 5 minutes and serve from skillet.

It all began on Saturday of Labor Day Weekend 2015.

back), they got up flawlessly and let go of the ropes. Barrett gave the music cue to Tim, the captain, and “Marry Me” by Train filled the air. Barrett got Abigail’s attention, and proceeded to get down on one knee (with fake ring in hand, of course). It was a touching and beautiful proposal, a sweet reflection of a young undying love that innocently grew from years spent celebrating lake life together in a favorite place, Lewis Smith Lake. The celebration began with friends and family - girls in tears of joy, guys giving one another kudos! Barrett and Abigail were married shortly after that proposal on October 14, 2016. They continue to spend every weekend, and some weekdays, on Smith Lake. Our gorgeous lake is such a huge part of this family’s life, as Barrett was only an infant the first time he visited the lake. The Lakeside Life Team wants to wish the Bradfords a Happy Anniversary. Here’s to many, many more memories being made on Lewis Smith Lake!

An Open Letter to Kurt & Cathy Heading down the main channel of Ryan Creek by boat, from The Castle to Trident Marina; every time you turn the sharp corner to go under Big Bridge, there it is, painted in huge red capital letters: “KAPT. KURT –N- CATHY 1995” - with a heart & arrow under 1995. We all wonder, who are Kurt & Cathy? We want to know more. Not just the things like, “are they still on the lake,” or “did they stay together;” because we’ve all seen some Facebook posts, and some of those answers are already there, or at least the answers that we are getting secondhand on a social media platform. We want to know the bigger story, about the emotion that would spur the dedication required to get that large mural painted on such a precarious spot. Then, there is the story beyond; and that’s where the real meat is.

We were curious about the latest watersports trend on Smith Lake, so we sat down with Blake Harper, owner of Alabama Flyboard, to get the scoop.

Q. A.

What is flyboarding? Flyboarding is one of the newest water-

sports. A flyboard is a board that has boots attached to it, in which the rider places his/her feet. The flyboard is connected to a jet ski by a hose. The jet ski provides the propulsion that lifts the rider into the air, flying by power of water.

Q. A.

We have a “no fly, no pay” policy at Alabama Flyboard.

Q.

We’ve heard it described as like “being a superhero.”

A.

It feels very much like being a super hero. As you fly

What if I can’t get up?

If you don’t fly, you don’t pay.

What does it feel like?

through the air, you have a rush of adrenaline similar to riding a roller coaster.

Q. A.

So now I am ready. What is the price & how can I book?

We are having introductory sales prices for the remainder

of the season, but prices will go up next season. Pricing depends on the amount of people in the party and the length of use time. All rates are online at alabamaflyboard.com. Booking can be done online or by calling (205) 900-7305.

or more.

Q. A.

Is it safe? It is safe, but I give a 10 minute briefing of

the safety rules and hand signals before we go out.

Meet: Colonel Bacchus “Buck” Busby Home Base: You can find Buck chilling on North Rock Creek, above Sway Back Bridge near Panther Branch. Humans: Chandler, Ginger, Mae & Hayes Busby Lake Pastime: Buck enjoys a quick dip in the lake followed by a long nap on the dock. Favorite Lake Treat: Boat rides with the family and of course the constant smattering of lakeside treat crumbs dropped or abandoned by unsuspecting kiddos.
