How I Lake Defining Smith Lake Kevin and Marian Howard were beach people. While their girls were growing up, the family summer holidays consisted of trips to Panama City Beach, and magnificent destinations in the Caribbean. As Kevin’s retirement

to draw near, the family knew they were ready for lake life. The lake life they initially envisioned was in Northern Michigan. After spending five years considering lakes in Michigan, where Kevin is from, they eventually found Smith Lake online by chance. Curiosity was piqued, so they decided to take a look at Smith Lake on their way to view a lake in Tennessee. Driving over Big Bridge, by what is now known as Trident Marina, the couple experienced a first actual glimpse of Smith Lake; and coincidentally, it was the moment they knew their search was over. Kevin and Marian spent the next two years flying into Birmingham, and driving by rental car to the tri-county area around Smith Lake in North Alabama. They hoped to find the perfect place to retire from the suburbs of DC in Northern Virginia. Each trip introduced them to different destinations around the lake, but something always brought them back to Sipsey Pines, a sprawling neighborhood nestled away in Winston County. Fast forward to 2012, the coveted lot was theirs, the retirement days had arrived; and now their lakefront home has been built overlooking a beautiful piece of Heaven, right here on Smith Lake. Kevin, an active runner, paddles his stand up paddle board from home to the end of Dismal Creek, over a five mile round-trip, every morning from April - October. During his down time, he is an active hunter, fisherman and avid water-skier.

Purchasing a lake home comes with so many decisions, and can be difficult, especially when trying to select the perfect place to fit your family. Cindy listened to what we wanted from the first moment she met us, and knew what was important to us in our search. I highly recommend working with Cindy! She is awesome!!! them - - who they are, what they do, where they come from, why they love the lake, when do they visit most OR do they live here full-time/part-time, AND what do they want and need. These questions will generally be the topics that we focus on in our quarterly issues. But in writing this address in early winter, ahead of a busy holiday shopping season, I ponder these questions and my heart turns to the people who are behind the businesses that service our community. They also seek answers to these same questions, so that they can determine how to serve us most effectively. Fulfilling our wants and needs is important to them. They are a very integral part of what makes the community whole.

10

I remember traveling to the lake on weekends beginning in the summer of 1997 - “back in the day” – when we enjoyed camping out on the lake, and when it still seemed so obscure. For whatever reason, we perceived the surrounding cities as small and remote. We thought we had to load up on all our goods and supplies, and be well prepared before we arrived. As an outsider to the area at that time (we lived in Birmingham initially), we erroneously presumed the lake was secluded without convenient areas to shop. During our commute, we didn’t think of venturing a mile or two off the interstate to check out Cullman or Jasper – we were just in too big of a hurry to get to our destination somewhere on the

was always an adventure figuring out where to go quickest for the forgotten necessities. As we grew more familiar with the area, we’d venture into town to make purchases for lake weekends, instead of only shopping in Birmingham as we’d done in the past. Not only did we begin to enjoy the convenience of “shop & go” locally, but we also began discovering many hidden treasures in all the little towns dotted around the lake. We found a favorite produce stand, a store to buy a map and groceries, a shop that sold ice cream and pizza along with routine convenience fare, a boutique for clothing items, a killer BBQ joint for grab & go lunches for boat picnics, and many stores that sold lake-oriented products. We’d take the time to talk to store owners and cashiers, get to know them; and it began to feel like we belonged, were part of the community. This familiarity certainly fueled our desire to move to the lake area much sooner than we might have. Time passed, we moved full time to the lake, but continued working in Birmingham. We put down roots. It was comforting and welcoming to see the same faces over and over as we shopped routinely near home. Conversely, it was disappointing to suddenly find a favorite small business closed or having changed hands. It can make one realize how important those little businesses, and their staff, truly are. It can be a pull at the heartstrings to realize how any amount of patronage can be important - and how our support can deeply affect the lives of all those people who are the backbone of our lake area experience. It doesn’t always have to be a case of “things come, and things go.” We can elect to have a greater impact on the businesses around us. Remember, these entities are owned by “our people” – the people of our lake community. We can encourage the “mom & pop” shop, the newly married couple who are gambling on a new venture, the young family that has decided to step away from the grind of the corporate world, or the older retired couple who just wanted to do something extra to generate funds while on a fixed income. They have elected to take a chance on entrepreneurship

Supporting and connecting with local businesses will allow us to continue to gain insight into what's available around us. Indeed The Lakeside Life is all about encouraging economic growth in the lake area. We challenge our area, 3 counties wide, to come together, united by our love of this beautiful place, Smith Lake, and support the businesses seen on the pages of this magazine and in all the local advertisements you find in your mailbox. They are reaching out to you in hopes you take notice of what they have to offer. They sincerely hope you will visit their stores, their websites, and that you’ll seek to find them on social media platforms. It’s actually fun to see how they interact with the public. They yearn to learn about us, so that they can provide what we want and need. Let’s take a stand as a community to exercise a conscious effort to interact locally and extend our patronage to those who rely most on our support – it will make all the difference for the future landscape of the lake.

in the place they love – a tough decision, one to be celebrated and supported. That’s the American dream after all, independence, entrepreneurship, homeownership; and having a little icing on the cake – that little slice of Heaven – living, working, prospering in a resort property area like Smith Lake.

JASON GERSTMAN OF BACK 4ORTY

RENAISSANCE MAN 12

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

SOME MIGHT CALL JASON GERSTMAN A RENAISSANCE MAN. He helps his wife. He takes his two daughters to school each day and picks them up. He cleans house. No household chore is a stranger. He also owns a company—Valley Heating and Cooling—that serves a large part of north Alabama. And he is a hunter. Not just any hunter. He is the founder and star of Back 4orty Outdoors, an Internet hunting show that streams on GEN7 Outdoors TV. Wrapping that personality package together, he may be described by some as a Good Ole Boy Renaissance Man. Depending on the day and the moment, both roles fit comfortably for this 37-year-old Bremen resident, who has called the Smith Lake region his home all his life. Gerstman, his wife Shanna, and daughters Avery and Lainey, live on the northern edge of the rolling high ground, 1,000 yards from where it drops into Smith Lake slightly east of Calvert Point. The home is modern, large, with a sprawling front yard. Across a side street is a 40 x 70-foot metal building. It is, says Gerstman, his “man cave.” It is much more. It is a studio for non-location video

programming, a place to play pool, watch television, have parties and to display the fruits of his hunting passion.

The centerpiece is a massive Alaskan Brown Bear, but by no means is that bear the only hint that this is an outdoorsman’s indoor paradise. The interior includes a two-story stackedstone fireplace. Walls are several varieties of rustic wood. There are racks and shelves of hunting clothes and equipment, hunting rifles and bows; an antique phone and stove bring a glimpse to a bygone era. And then there are the trophies. Four deer heads adorn one wall, and others are scattered on other walls. Bear skulls sit atop a table. There is a photo wall with snapshots of hunters and their trophies tacked to a wall. There are other mounted bears, turkeys, tanned animal skins and, Gerstman proudly points out, the head of a white tail that was his daughter’s first trophy. It is a man cave that any like-minded hunter would envy. It did not appear from thin air. Jason Gerstman worked hard for years of long hours, lived frugally, and saved for this to happen. His love of hunting and outdoors began when he was a boy and took him on the path, albeit a winding one, to where he is today.

“SINCE I WAS A KID I’VE HUNTED AND FISHED, LIVED IN THE OUTDOORS,” he said. “My father introduced me to hunting and fishing, like most people. “I used to get in trouble for shooting my granddad’s squirrels that he fed and kept up,” he continued. “I learned to trap, tanning…tanning

the

hides.”

Gerstman was proud to add that his early years of hunting included the development of sound conservation habits to properly manage wildlife population and the health of that population. Those early growing-up days were in Jones Chapel, a rural community along U.S. 278, north of Smith Lake and fifteen miles west of Cullman. “I lived on a road

14

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

that not the school bus nor the mailman came down,” he said. “It was just way back in the boonies. We saw a vehicle back in there…they were coming to see you.” Gerstman’s introduction to shooting was a BB gun. He was 8 or 9, “and I took that BB gun out and shot everything from Coke cans to bottles. And then I started going on these dove hunts with my father and trying to shoot doves off power lines. The little BB gun wasn’t very accurate so I mostly just shot a bunch of BBs in the air.”

“AND, WE ALWAYS WATCHED HUNTING SHOWS,” he continued. “And I just thought it was real awesome watching people taking cameras and gear out into the woods, and take something as hard as hunting and then making it more difficult by getting footage of it.” And now he has his own show to do that very thing. It was a long time coming. Gerstman’s growing-up years were lean ones. His parents kept him in basic clothes, but told him that “if I wanted anything extra —a pair of Nikes or something— there was a chicken house where I could go to work.” Always industrious, he chose not only the chicken house, but also scraped up money by collecting and selling cans and scrap metal. “I got away from hunting for a while,” he said. “Hunting is pretty expensive” so, for a time, the sport was set aside while Gerstman found his way in the world. When Gerstman finished high school he had no interest in college. “I’m not book smart that way,” he explained. “I’m not wired that way.” So he went to work framing houses for a construction company, with few fringe benefits. He recognized that he needed insurance, and 18 years ago found work with Valley Heating and Cooling. It was not easy. “I worked 70 to 80 hours a week and learned the trade of HVAC,” he said. As long as those hours were, Gerstman knew that this was work with a future.

After talking a while, the host, Phillip Pitts— who lived in Chelsea—invited Gerstman on a hunting trip, to see how it worked and the process of producing a show. “Next thing you know,” said Gerstman, “me and this guy are best friends.” Pitts moved on from the outdoor show to launch a media company, producing television commercials for various companies including one for Valley Heating and Cooling, commissioned by Gerstman. Their relationship evolved into hunting trips, learning to video hunting trips and the other details of recording such outdoor adventures. “I fell

THE KING OF WATERFRONT PROPERTY

JustinDyar

By Stephanie G. Lepore

Around

this area, you probably recognize the

familiar face of REALTOR® Justin Dyar as Mr. Smith Lake®, the unofficial official king of waterfront property here. It’s certainly worth noting that Justin has built a life and a career around the sparkling waters of Smith Lake, which now includes a fabulously elegant but casual six-bedroom home perched on a hill facing the west to capture gorgeous sunsets, and a four-agent team, assistant, and photographer as part of his Lake Homes Realty (lakehomes.com) group (which has expanded into 16 states, though, says Justin, “Our roots are at Smith Lake and always will be.”). He’s appeared on HGTV’s Lakefront Bargain Hunt, sold Smith Lake properties to clients as far away as Hawaii, France, and Shanghai. “I had one lady in Colorado see me on TV, and she drove here and bought a house on Smith Lake,” says Justin. “People all across the world are finding us—everyone’s friendly, it’s safe, taxes are low, and $400,000 will get you a lot of bang for your buck.” There’s even a runway at the lake now, Justin points out, so getting here from afar is easier than ever. “The water is so clean and clear here, and my favorite part of the lake is that the water is your back yard, front yard really, and the view changes every day: wildlife, foliage, different boats and people,” says Justin. “It’s full of life and activity and I never look out the windows and see the same thing, whether it be a flock of geese, five fishing boats, or people tubing and skiing.”

A Look Inside THE DYAR HOME

Details make all the difference inside Justin’s well-designed

home—from a mix of materials for texture and interest to laid-back but beautiful furnishings that evoke a casual everyone-is-welcome-here vibe.

Earth-tone

tile, freestanding copper sinks, and wood-

framed windows in the master bath give the space a natural feel that makes it seem as though it’s tucked in among the trees. An open shower is tucked behind the soaking tub.

Watery blue bedding in the master bedroom pays homage

to the lake landscape, while neutral furnishings allow the space to feed off the surroundings. Mirrored chests flanking the bed sparkle when the light bouncing off the water streams through the large windows, and a wood-stained ceiling installation brings in a handsome natural element that keeps the room from feeling too precious.

Justin’s master closet features shiny hardwood floors laid on

the diagonal and built-ins that eliminate the need for excess bulky furniture in the master bedroom. The thoughtful design makes it easy to keep clothes, accessories, and other items (such as his Grandmother’s vintage luggage, a cherished possession) organized.

Justin’s front entrance is rustic but not country thanks to

different finishes on wood elements (knotty wood front doors, polished hardwoods, smooth wood beams on the railing) and touches of iron and metal on the sconces, stair railings, and a tiered chandelier from Restoration Hardware. A gas lantern on the exterior is from Bevolo in New Orleans. (bevolo.com)

In the main living room, Justin can throw open the oversized doors and treat guests (and himself!) to a jaw-dropping view

of Smith Lake that truly brings the outside in. It’s common to catch a glimpse of fishermen below, as the water in front of Justin’s house is a huge draw for anglers. In colder months, a wood-burning stone fireplace takes off the chill inside. “I wanted a true wood-burning fireplace,” says Justin. “While a gas starter would be more convenient, I just love the smell of real wood burning inside.”

THE DYAR HOME

The

main rooms in the

house have a killer party flow, which was on Justin’s list of must-haves. His vision, which he passed on to his general contractor (also known as “Dad”) was to host up to 200 people for a gathering where “everyone has their own space.” (He even has enough room to host bands for some of his parties!) The idea, says Justin, was for people to come in, grab a drink, walk over to the counter for food, and then flow into various seating areas—

one thing you’ll always find at a Dyar house party: music. “People are important, and you have to have good food—which I don’t cook myself—but the music creates the atmosphere.”

“I DON’T COOK,” HE SAYS. “BUT I CAN THROW TOGETHER A MEAN PLATE OF NACHOS WITH JUST ABOUT ANYTHING I HAVE ON HAND.”

28

The view from the dining room into the living room

and entryway is framed by heavy wood beams that make elegant furnishings—neutral sofas, iron chandeliers, and driftwood-style pieces—feel special but not too look-but-don’t-touch, which is exactly the vibe Justin envisioned. “I want people to be comfortable. There’s nothing too elaborate here so my friends and family feel at ease sitting on the couch,” he says. A mix of traditional bound rugs and a cowhide soften the living spaces but still allow the gleaming hardwoods to stand out.

Open kitchens can often equal no storage

space, but Justin took advantage of a bank of

cabinets on the far side and also incorporated extra storage into the large island. Comfy upholstered barstools and a raised countertop offer casual seating. The rustic sophistication of an oversize copper sink and pretty glass globe pendants keep the wood beams, ceiling, and floors from overwhelming the airiness of the house. The entire west side of the living spaces is filled with windows so the view carries through as seamlessly as the flow.

A separate bar between the kitchen and living room is

the perfect party pit-stop to grab a drink without clogging the food station. Just off the kitchen, a door to the outside is a quick escape to the outdoor entertaining spaces. The richness of the entire house is on full display from this perspective, and when it came to furnishings, Justin counted on several different designers to help him pull together the look. When it came to furnishing his house, Justin called on White Willow in Cullman, Elizabeth Garner Interiors, and Richard Tubb Interiors.

The Grand Basement

THE DYAR HOME

Calling Justin’s downstairs living rooms simply a basement

doesn’t do the space justice. Created as a haven for overnight guests to have room to spread out and feel at home, the entire area is tucked away downstairs for complete privacy. A den area is bathed in rich wood paneling that truly makes it feel like a refined cabin getaway; an inlaid wood pattern on the ceiling and dark polished concrete floors round out the space. The den also includes cozy gathering spots with plenty of seating as well as a television and a lake view that can’t be beat. Bedrooms, baths, a full kitchen, and access to the outdoors round out the five-star Hotel Dyar.

Step Outside

THE DYAR HOME

Justin’s home on Smith Lake is situated to take advantage of the

most important aspect of a lakefront home: the expansive view of the glittering water. Birmingham plan designer David Smelcer of David Smelcer Design and Construction (facebook.com/ DSDandC/) helped Justin design his house to frame the best vantage points of the lake from the back, which includes both screened and covered porches—another check off of Justin’s must-have list. Every angle is carefully positioned to catch a famed Smith Lake sunset as well. “It was important to me that each window and all bedrooms have a great view,” says Justin. The pitched roof and A-frame windows

on

the

screened porch give a treehouse feel to the space and allow the stellar view to really shine. Tables and chairs and other thoughtful seating arrangements in both spaces encourage outdoor dining and mingling during parties. There is a natural flow to the outdoor areas, and the defined seating anchors the large space with bite-size conversation spots to kick back and enjoy the view. Stone pillars on the covered porch recall the same material used on the indoor fireplace and the Jacuzzi pavilion fireplace closer to the dock.

The Jacuzzi pavilion was built by Justin’s brother-in-law, Seth Hammer of Hammer Bilt Homes. A wood frame

surrounds the Jacuzzi, elevating it but also concealing it from folks on the lake below. Bar seating for eight further surrounds it, which offers great lake views and a spot to sip a cocktail for guests. A wood-burning stone fireplace makes the pavilion suitable for year-round entertaining.

His end-ofthe-day goal: zero emails in his inbox. Justin retreats to a Birmingham condo to get his “city fix.” “I’m blessed to have it so close, but I’ve never lived there full-time,” he says. “I never leave the lake in the summer, but in the quieter months I’ll go to Birmingham a few times a week to grab dinner at Bottega, Ocean, or Gian Marcos, or to see a show. For me, going to Birmingham is like other people coming to the lake for a few days.” Justin shares his lake home with two tom cats, Jake and Skiddy, two boats, and three jet skis. His top pick for water play: wakesurfing and sunset-watching. “I can go anywhere in the world,” he says, “but it’s hard to beat a group of friends on a boat pointed toward the sun on Smith Lake.” He owns property around the lake and is currently working on a few renovation projects. RENTING

ON

SMITH

Many people are already planning a Smith Lake getaway for 2018! Our area offers a variety of rental options for lake lovers from

condos and cabins, to luxury homes, renting up to $1000 per night. We teamed up with Jeff Thomas of “Smith Lake Rentals and Sales” to capture his thoughts on Smith Lake rental properties, so that together we could offer this list of 10 great tips to consider while searching for a lakeside rental.

BOOK EARLY

KNOW WHO YOU ARE RENTING FROM

Many rentals book months in advance, particularly for a holiday weekend. The most popular dates are: July 4, Labor Day and Memorial Day. July 4 will often book a year in advance on the most popular rentals. Start in the Jan/Feb/Mar timeframe to increase your chances of getting your perfect place.

Make sure you are dealing with a credible property management company, or know that the owner is going to be responsive. For example, if the air conditioning goes out, you would want to know that it would be immediately addressed.

REFINE YOUR SEARCH Know your budget - how many people need to sleep in beds, how many total are in your party, if a boat dock is needed, and your preferred location on the lake. This will help ensure you get the right accommodations.

Smith Lake welcomes visitors from all areas, with roughly 50% converging from Alabama, 25% from Mississippi, and 25% from various other areas. To date, according to our research, there are approximately 100 places for rent on Smith Lake. Some renters are visiting to learn more about the lake by renting before their purchase; others are here to simply “take it all in” to enjoy the beauty that our great lake is known for; and there are plenty of visiting locals looking for a good “stay-cation” with friends & family. We’ve compiled a list of 10 tips for securing the perfect rental on Smith.

LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PICTURES Pictures get you interested, but they do not tell the whole story. Many times pictures will not show everything (e.g. the 150 steps to the water.) Videos are available on many of the homes. TIP: Watch videos to help set expectations.

38

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT AMENITIES Is there a grill? If so, is it charcoal or gas? How many steps to get to the water? How many boat slips are available, what size are they, and is there a boat lift? And in the deep south — especially if it’s Fall - does the rental offer sports channels through its television equipment? In short, envision the weekend going perfectly in your mind, and imagine anything you’d hope to find at the rental for your convenience, make a list, and ask the appropriate questions.

READ THE FINE PRINT ON COSTS

SPIKED APPLE CIDER

The nightly rate is just part of the rental costs. Also included are cleaning fees, taxes, damage deposits or a damage deposit waiver. If you utilize VRBO or AIRBNB, you will also pay a service fee IN ADDITION to the rental costs. TIP: Avoid VRBO or AIRBNB, if possible, and go direct to the property management company or individual. This can save you over $100 per booking.

LOOK FOR TRAVELER REVIEWS Pictures can show you the place you are renting, but reviews share a previous renter’s experience of the place, and the area around it.

Hello Winter!

There’s nothing better than snuggling up with the ones you love on chilly winter nights while gathered around a fireplace or a fire pit. Top that off with a warm delicious beverage in hand, and you are set for a wonderful evening. This is one of our all-time favorites, and we want to share it with you. Grab a bottle of Tuaca, apple cider, and some cinnamon, and you’re in for a real treat.

ASK ABOUT PETS Be sure you inquire about furry friends being allowed, this will ensure you aren’t met with surprise trips to the local pet hotel. In addition, most homes will have a stiff penalty if pets are detected. Be sure and inform your expected guests of the pet policy.

1.5 oz Tuaca Vanilla Citrus Liqueur 6.5 oz apple cider (Hays is a great brand) 1 tsp ground cinnamon (McCormick) 1-2 cinnamon sticks (McCormick) Warm the apple cider on the stove or in the microwave. Stir in ground cinnamon. Pour in a glass. Add Tuaca Liqueur. Stir. Garnish with cinnamon stick(s). Drink up, but be careful, it’s hot!

PLAN AHEAD Map out the closest locations to grocery stores, convenience stores, or marinas on the lake. Have plans for rainy days, particularly if you have children on board.

Cheers my dears! As always, enjoy and please drink responsibly!

Enjoy!!

GET READY TORELAX Take off your watch, leave your cell phone on the counter, grab your camera, and get ready to experience one of the best kept secrets in the southeast, Lewis Smith Lake. Y

ears ago a group of three young men designated Goat Island their meeting spot whenever they met on hot summer days at the lake. A place for good times and forging friendships, but none of the three could have imagined that the island would come to mean so much more. Mike Mullaney, Brad Glenn, and John Dean were childhood buddies around the same ages. They graduated together, in 1980, from Cullman High School. They went their separate ways after high school but they always held a special bond, and fond memories of days on the lake around Goat Island. Mike obtained a Geology degree, and later started working for a German plastics manufacturing company in Cullman, REHAU. Brad became a police

officer for the City of Cullman. John was an insurance agent. Each man lived his own unique and separate life, as is often the pattern of growing up in a small town. John had a client, Gery Teichmiller, who was a few years older. Gery’s head start in life experiences, would later serve as an added bonus to what the future held for him and the three younger men. Gery became an Engineer, after finishing high school, and a stint in the Navy. Gery, like many Cullman natives, has a German background. It was natural for him to make wine and homebrew like his father and uncles. He started homebrewing in the 1970s, well before most folks considered it possible, or it became a popular hobby. He created many different recipes, and

learned the scientific method behind making good beer. His attention to sanitation, water quality and temperature control soon took his beer to levels that far exceeded the homebrew his family made. He soon had a following of family and friends that loved his beer.

became a real passion for him, and as with Gery, friends and family soon became a fan base, requesting more beer and asking him to provide beer for weddings and events. About this time, John began to urge Mike to join forces to start a brewery. At first he was reluctant. But the devastating tornados of 2011 intervened, and a Mike was also a home brewer, who started making series of events led to what is now Goat Island Brewing. homebrew in 2008, after many years of making homemade wine. his basement, John told Gery that he needed to meet his friend Mike. John arranged for Mike and Gery to meet at the 2012 Cullman Oktoberfest celebration. The two homebrewers immediately struck up a friendship and began swapping stories and recipes. As a result of this synergy, their brewing advanced to a new level. Eventually the idea of starting a brewery resurfaced. The men were finally able to dip their toes in the water when mutual friends decided to open a brew pub called the Blue Moose Café. Although they had no ownership, John, Brad, Mike and Gery became the Blue Moose Brew Crew. Prior to the release of the first beer, the guys decided to build anticipation with the community by selling tickets to buy the first legally brewed beer to be sold in Cullman since prohibition. On the night of the beer release they called out ticket numbers. The lucky customer to get the first beer was Ken Brown. They continued to brew beer for the brew pub and the beer sold out within minutes each time a new beer was created. After having great success at the Blue Moose Cafe’ and Brew Pub, the guys received news the establishment would be shutting down. They began to consider more seriously the dream they’d put on the back burner. The only thing holding them back was fear. There is financial risk that comes with every entrepreneur’s jump into the unknown. After much prayer and discussion, the men decided to find investors and set out to make the dream a reality. 42

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

While planning the brewery, a truly fortunate thing happened. Once again the tornado of 2011 played into this wonderful discovery. John was calling on a client that owned a furniture store. The owner had found some personal items of John William Richter in the attic of an old building downtown that had been damaged by the tornado. John William Richter was a businessman and a prominent figure in the early days of Cullman. He owned a Hotel and Saloon. In those belongings was what looked to be a beer recipe. The recipe, written partially in English and partially in Old German, posed an instant and unique problem of sheer translation. Luckily for the guys, Mike worked for a German company. He asked a German co-worker to translate the recipe for them. Due to the Old German language, the co-worker had to email it to his father in Germany. However, it was finally translated, and Gery took what he could from the recipe and improvised the rest based on his knowledge of German lagers and brewing techniques of that time period. The beer was delicious, and the guys knew they had found their flagship beer. Sure enough it is their best seller to this day. To add to the wonder of this story, William Frederick Richter is the great, great grandfather of Mike’s wife, Lisa. The guys named the beer Richter’s Pilsner in honor of its creator. It has a 5.9% ABV, and is very smooth and crisp, a beverage every pallet can love. In the meantime, the four men were able to secure investors. A contractor was hired and work began but the initial investment was not enough to fully finish the brewery. For that reason, they had to do a great deal of work themselves. Thankfully, all four of their wives stood right beside them, ready to dive into

unchartered waters, and were eager to help. The couples spent days and nights preparing wood, staining and painting. Working every night after their day jobs, they slowly built the tap room that has come to be widely known and loved today. The ladies were certain of one thing; the women’s bathroom had to be very nice. They made sure it was just right for the female customers a much needed hidden feminine touch in a decidedly masculine setting. After several months, long nights and extensive labor, the brewery came to life, and was ready for its first batch of beer. The brewery opened in April of 2015. Three months later, in June, they had their official Grand Opening. People poured in to experience Goat Island Brewing for the first time. The Senior Pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Protestant Church, John William Richter gave his blessings at the opening. As you might have guessed from his name, Reverend Richter is the great, great grandson of William F. Richter, original creator of Richter’s Pilsner. The Mayor at the time, Max Townsend, said a few words, and John Dean’s daughter, Danielle, also spoke, delivering a heartwarming congratulatory and memorable speech (see insert) about the roots of the venture, and the friendship of the four. “The City, Mayor, and community have been very supportive…without their support we could not be here,” states Brad. The guys are very grateful to the community for welcoming them with open arms. Currently Goat Island Brewing’s beer is distributed throughout the state of Alabama, and they have recently started canning the Richter’s Pilsner using a mobile canning company. The brewery has plans to purchase additional fermenters, expand into neighboring states, and purchase their own canning line.

Danielle’s Speech at Grand Opening:

On the day of April 27th, 2011, Cullman, Alabama was turned upside down. While devastation hit hard, something was brewing in the midst of destruction. An old high school friendship rekindled and the passion for making good beer was sparked. Our two brew masters had a solid reputation of home brewing, designing new beers, and perfecting the American and German classics. When the two began to collaborate and brew together, magic happened and the synergy took their beer recipes to a new level. You could call it a true brewmance (bromance with brews). Behind the scenes stood the rest of the brew crew. Disguised as a rocket scientist, a geologist, an insurance agent, and a cop, these four beer connoisseurs came together and decided it was time to share the love with others. What started out as a simple fantasy was in the process of becoming reality. New beer was invented, dreams were fueled, and plans were made to birth something this town had never seen since the 1800s: a craft brewery. Goat Island Brewing was established in early 2015 on a foundation of friendship and a firm belief that it is never too late to go after your dream. So before you begin to cast your judgment, these old goats know good beer and invite you to experience with them how “Life is too short to drink baaad beer!”

Goat Island sells their beer by the 7 oz. glass or 16 oz. pint glass in their tap room. They offer growlers to take home, and the Old German authentic Richter Pilsner can be purchased in cans to take home. Along with beer, they sell merchandise including shirts, hats and tumblers which are available in the brewery, and on their website at www.goatislandbrewing.com. However soon enough he needed full time help. Paul White started out as a bartender. He expressed interest Gery started out as the brewmaster and got the company in the brew process. It was Goat Island that brought together a group of young men. A meeting place on Lewis Smith Lake, after school, during the week, in the summertime. One statement from any of the friends, “…meet me at the island,” and they would find one another there. What a fitting name, one meant to be, for their new venture and gathering place, a nod to the past and a way to celebrate these friends and their endeavor. agreed to help him learn. He was so committed to learning the process, that he actually worked for several months without pay. Gery mentored Paul, teaching him everything he could. “I’m not going to live forever, I have to pass it on,” states Gery. Paul is now Goat Island’s Brewmaster. He is young and eager to learn. “If he isn’t brewing, he has his ear buds in, listening to a podcast about brewing, or has his nose in a book,” states Mike. He has become the heart of Goat Island Brewing, and has won awards with the beers he has brewed. Their bartender and Brewery Coordinator, Hillary, will greet you with a smile, and make you feel right at home. “She is a great asset,” states Brad. Ironically, her last name is Brewer - quite fitting!

John’s favorite is Richter’s Pilsner, not only does this beer have a remarkable back story, but the taste is completely revolutionary, clean and pure, well before its time. It won a gold medal at the 2017 Alabama Craft Beer Championship, and received 2nd best beer of the competition. This recipe came straight from its owner, William Frederick Richter, who owned Richter’s Hotel and Saloon, a German style saloon in the late 1800s. It has a grainy malt flavor with a very clean hop bitterness straight from German hops. This beer is for everyone. It is undeniably delicious, a treasured discovery.

Last but not least, Mike’s favorite. Without a doubt, his is Big Bridge IPA. Named after the historic landmark on Smith Lake, this beer is a full intense burst of hop and aroma, which surely had lots to do with the name, since Gery claims jumping from Big Bridge, back in the day, was a testament of courage. It has hints of citrus zest, mango and apricot with no bitterness or aftertaste. How does that happen with an IPA? We invite you to visit Goat Island Brewery as soon as you can. Try these beers yourself, pick your own favorite, and get a little history about the lake from some true locals. Socialize with friends and family in a fun and relaxed setting, rich with true Cullman history. When you go, be sure to tell them The Lakeside Life Team sent you! You will enjoy a trip to Cullman for this experience, and we feel you are truly going to love their beer!

Gery’s favorite was a tough decision. He had to dig hard for his answer. Keep in mind, Gery is the “scientist” behind all the beers, and for him to say he likes one over the other is blasphemy. Nonetheless, he reluctantly narrowed down his selection to the Colonel’s Fest Bier. This beer claimed the bronze in the 2017 Alabama Craft Beer Competition. It is very malty and rich in flavor. It has a distinct toasted malt background with a hint of sweetness. It’s a big glass of The Lakeside Life Team malt. So good! Photos: Deidre Ruth Photography

We had the opportunity to sit down with Amy Dill of Sycamore Grove in downtown Jasper. Amy is a registered interior designer who graduated from Auburn University, and then acquired the work experience needed to take the NCIDQ exam to further her career in the professional design field. She worked in many different areas of design before deciding to strike out on her own as a design consultant, which has created a flexible schedule for Amy, and her husband, who have three small children. She has always dreamed of having a shop that housed her interior design studio, and soon after moving back to her childhood home of Jasper, her dream was fulfilled. Amy opened Sycamore Grove, which is the home base for her company. Sycamore Grove has unique items for reasonable prices, and offers a comfortable casual shopping atmosphere. Amy has a passion for interior design, and likes sharing a small piece of that joy with everyone who enters her shop.

Q With Jasper being so close to the lake, actually an anchor city in the lake’s tri-county area, what is your favorite trend in lake home décor at the moment? I think that my favorite thing about lake home décor, and any themed décor, is the art of mixing in the theme subtly. It is really easy to go overboard with themed design, and there is an art to incorporating the theme in just the right amount. I love to walk into a space and know immediately the purpose and environment, but to feel at home and comfortable as well. Over use of a theme can make the space awkward and uninviting. I love to add sentimental pieces and vintage items to spaces. So in designing a lake home, I might add ceiling beams from old dock wood, or as a mantle. I believe that these architectural details speak louder than more obvious accessories.

QAfter recovering from the holiday season and putting away holiday décor, a space can look bare. What are some tips for sprucing up after the embellishment of the holiday?

Q What piece in your portfolio are you most proud of? I have had many different projects, and I have loved each one, as it presented its own challenges and successes. I have done offices, churches, home design, outdoor spaces, and multi-purpose buildings. I would have to say that one of my recent favorite projects was Warehouse 319 in downtown Jasper. I had a group of owners to work with, and a completely open space to design. The building was old, and had so much character. I love projects where you can incorporate old and new, and salvage a piece of history.

46

The Lakeside Life | thelakesidelife.com

Removing Christmas décor is always a little disheartening. I like to add a few new pieces to my home to keep a fresh new feel - in keeping with the New Year. I love to add new picture frames or printed canvases of our family taken during the holidays to re-live those recent memories. I also think that it is great to keep some twinkling white lights a little longer - maybe on the mantle or another area, mixed in with some fresh vases of flowers for a crisp, clean look.

Q What are 3 tips you can give us to add personality to your home? I absolutely love adding personal items to my home. There is no better way to exude your family’s personality, so I would say: Prints of family or pets - not necessarily staged prints. You can do prints of your family doing activities that they love, or even close up abstract prints. Nothing shows who you are better than you. Sayings. If you have specific sayings that you repeat, put it on a pillow or a sign. This is a fantastic way to show who you are in a subtle way. Accent. I love to add an accent wall with color or wallpaper. This adds a little something special, but in a concentrated area. I currently have a new wallpaper, that I love; and it is temporary, so if you get tired of it, you simply peel it off.

Q Other than Sycamore Grove, where are your favorite places to find home décor, particularly focusing on a lake style theme? I love to antique shop. It is exciting to me, to find shops that are off the beaten path. They are usually full of treasures. I

like to find items that were created for a purpose and then use them for a different one.

Q When starting a home interior project, what is the first thing you do? The first thing that I do is meet with the client and look at the space. I ask a lot of questions about the client’s vision, likes and dislikes, budget, and function of the space. Information gathering is definitely the most important initial task.

Q What services are offered at Sycamore Grove? Sycamore Grove offers complete interior design services. I can work in conjunction with architects/contractors for new construction, or renovations. I can also do new space planning for an existing area. I can assist with drawings, finishes and colors, and then finish the project out with lighting, furniture and accessories.

Her family is full of generations of farmers who have lived and worked

on the surrounding land. Her knowledge is not simply learned, it is deeply

instilled.

Cindy’s family owned and farmed 70 acres of land between the mouth of

Simpson Creek and Goat Island. She remembers her grandmother taking her

there. “The porch steps where Momma grew up are still there,” she says. She has lots of

childhood memories of walking the banks of Smith Lake, but it wasn't all fun and

a gas station/convenience store, now J&D Four Way, and a father who was a farmer. Also,

her family once owned a store where the Brushy Pond Cafe’ was located.

Steve and Geneva have two sons.

Combined with their children's spouses and seven grandchildren (one granddaughter in the mix), the Waldrops are a beautiful party of thirteen. They are the owners of S & G Waldrop Electrical, Inc. in Birmingham. They have owned the business since 1981. Recently, Steve and Geneva Waldrop invited us into their graceful Rocky Springs home to show us how the locals do Christmas on Smith Lake. The home, built in 2014 by local builder Dana Welch, is a stately mixture of brick, stone and wood, situated on the lot to effectively enhance their main channel view over Ryan Creek - an inviting setting for the Waldrop’s large family. This is the first home in which the Waldrops have lived on Smith Lake full time. They previously owned a weekend home on the lake, dating back to 1994.

The Waldrops love Christmas, and enjoy decorating and providing fun for the entire family,

after all most of their family gatherings throughout the year occur at their home. Their holiday décor was inspired by a majestic picture of an elk they had seen and bought in an antique store. Each elegant room offers décor that gives the feeling of being outdoors. By the way, creativity is prominent in the family, their daughter-in-law has a degree in interior design. And of course, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without Mrs. Waldrop’s arrangement of Christmas candies and iced sugar cookies.

Christmas is truly the most wonderful time of the year. But there is something about Christmas on Smith Lake that

makes it that much sweeter. The twinkling of lights reflecting on the water makes the season seem even more magical. One of the Waldrop’s favorite things about Christmas on Smith Lake is viewing the Christmas lights from the water at night. For 2017, the Waldrop family mixed things up with their own version of the “12 Days of Christmas.” Mrs. Waldrop put her own twist on the idea by giving items such as “Two Turtle Candies,” and instead of “French Hens” giving gift cards to Chick-Fil-a – what a fun way to get into the Christmas spirit!

t

he video “Shred to School” is clever. Well produced, smile inducing. And it has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times since its release in September.

The story is of a Cullman boy who wakeboards to school rather than riding the bus. It stars a six-year-old named Kane Ward. He is the real deal; some would say a wakeboard prodigy. He won’t turn seven years old until February 8, and already holds nine-and-under championships at three major wakeboard tournaments. There is a lot to the story, and Kane and his dad, Justin, sat down on a late fall sunny morning to tell it. Kane was fidgety; the story-telling was cutting into what he hoped to be a day of wakeboarding. His blond mop of hair bounced as he scooted back and forth on a bench, sometimes peering over the table at videos on his dad’s laptop. Sometimes just wanting things to move along. A questioner asked Kane how tall he was. “I don’t know,” he replied quickly. “Uh, maybe five feet?” Father Justin smiled, “Not quite five feet. But we do know how much you weigh—49 pounds.” Kane may feel five-foot-tall, but is more like three and a half feet; just a typical solid, happy, friendly boy who likes gymnastics, skateboarding, basketball and playing with his friends. And, who also happens to be one of America’s most accomplished wakeboarders for his age. Justin for several years has enjoyed wakeboarding, even competing in some local tournaments. He showed Kane how it worked, demonstrating simple drills on land and allowing him to see how it felt to strap his feet to a wakeboard. It was the summer when Kane was three. “I had worked with Kane in the water countless times by pulling him up to the shoreline,” recalled Justin, “so I didn’t have any reservations with letting him try it on his own.” That first time on his own was at Birmingham’s Flip Side Watersports, the wakeboard park at Birmingham’s Oak thelakesidelife.com | The Lakeside Life

Mountain State Park. The park works with an electric cable system that pulls wakeboarders along at various speeds. Because the tow cable is angled upward, wakeboarders find getting upright much easier than when towed behind a boat. That day Kane became the park’s youngest wakeboarder, and remains so today. The cable park experience gave Kane confidence to wakeboard behind a boat, which he did later that same year while he still was three years old. Those first experiences were the hook, and Kane was a natural. The next summer, 2015, at age four Kane was wakeboarding behind a boat with confidence. “From this point on,” said Justin, “things have come quickly…” He learned “surface tricks,” from behind a personal watercraft, and Justin videotaped so they later could watch as a learning tool. He posted some videos on the Internet. Other wakeboarders, and companies that manufacture wakeboards and wakeboard equipment, took notice. A breakout year came in 2016. Kane learned to jump from wake to wake behind a boat, taking on a threefoot ramp at Flip Side, and working to land flips both from the ramp and from a boat wake. Justin posted videos of Kane’s efforts, and wakeboarders responded online with encouragement. “I was getting messages from people I didn’t even know,” said Justin, “all rooting for Kane to ride away from one of his invert (flip) attempts.” No one was happier than Kane. Being on the water was fun, and so were the tricks that seemed to come almost naturally. With a wetsuit he wakeboarded yeararound, any time, according to Justin, that the air and water temperatures add up to at least 100 degrees.

When companies in the wakeboarding business began coming around, things speeded up again. Hyperlite offered a sponsorship and so did Flip Side Watersports, Shred Ready Helmets and Cullman’s Russell Marine. For a boy who by this time wanted to see how good he could get, the sponsorships were a big deal. “We were now getting the top of the line gear from Hyperlite, and getting to ride behind some of the best boats in the business, thanks to Russell Marine and their line of Nautiques (a popular boat for wakeboarding),” said Justin.

described by some as a combination of waterskiing, snowboarding and surfing, is a surface watersport that involves a relatively small, somewhat rectangular, board with boot-like foot bindings attached to it. There are a number of variations to wakeboards. The technique is for the rider to secure the bindings on his or her feet, then hold a tow line as he or she is pulled along the surface of the water. Most often, wakeboarders are pulled by a boat, but the phenomenon of towing behind mechanical cables through a water course is growing. Winches and personal watercraft also can be used to pull wakeboarders. Many wakeboarders perform a wide variety of tricks, or maneuvers, including 180- and 360-degree spins, flips/inverts, jumps, grabs, and surface tricks. Beginning in the 1970s as a sport called “skurfing,” wakeboarding has grown steadily through the years. In the recent past, the sport has experienced rapid growth with many watersport enthusiasts abandoning their waterskis for wakeboards. The sport has been a part of the World Games since 2005, and, today, the World Wakeboard Association offers more than 400 days worldwide of wakeboarding, wakeskating and wakesurfing events each year.

New tricks and tactics began adding up in the summer Where does this extraordinary skill come from? “I feel of 2017. Kane put them to practice and won first place like I’ve always been able to do it,” said Kane. at tournaments on Smith Lake and Lake Guntersville, and at Tennessee’s Center Hill Lake. That, plus a lot of practice. And maybe heredity. He was landing flips off ramps, rolls, 180- and 360-degree spins, the latter requiring passing the towline handle from one hand to another behind his back while he is in mid air. He is now routinely landing advanced tricks such as a heel side back roll and a toeside 360.

“Kane is…exceptional at gymnastics, and flips on the trampoline,” explains Justin as he opened a video file on his laptop to show Kane in what appears to be a gymnastics class. What you see is one of those amazing sequences that cheerleaders perform as they lead their football team onto the field. Kane begins a run and, seeming to defy gravity, performs a sequence

of handsprings followed by a back flip, finishing nonchalantly on his feet. “Going upside down is…natural for Kane,” his dad explains. “He’s like a cat, always landing on his feet. He has more air awareness than most people twice his age.” Maybe it comes from his mother, Cassie. She was a cheerleader at Shelton State College in Tuscaloosa, and, says Justin, “she has always been very good at tumbling and that sort of thing.” And then there is the trampoline where Kane practices flips and other maneuvers, sometimes with the wakeboard strapped to his feet. The fact is, says Justin, “most wakeboarders have some kind of background in gymnastics or tumbling.”

The “Shred to School” video is 4 minutes and 10 seconds long and can be viewed by keying the following: vimeo.com/233433273

The story behind the video is that Kane actually rode his wakeboard in all of the locations, often towed by a high-speed winch in places where a boat could never go. The idea began with a similar wakeboard video Kane had seen. Hearing what Kane and Justin had plans After a 2017 summer of unprecedented to do, Hyperlite gave Kane a new model wakeboard to attention from the wakeboard industry and top use, that wouldn’t be available for purchase until 2018. competitors in the sport, came the amusing video of “At one point I had the feeling we had bitten off more Kane wakeboarding to school. than we could chew,” said Justin. “Winching is hard Of course he didn’t really wakeboard to Cullman Primary work, but it makes for really cool videos and pictures, School. Instead, it was an all-sorts-of-fun and all-sorts- because you are usually in a location that a boat or of-work project that included video segments made in (personal watercraft) can’t get in.” Cullman, Huntsville, Oxford, Winfield and Birmingham. In the finished version, Kane’s ride to school is without The video shows Kane wakeboarding on a lake, over flaw. But outtakes show that he too had to work hard to ramps and rails, down a curvy and shallow creek, over make it look just right. As with every production, there logs, over a waterfall, under train and highway bridges were mess-ups that had to be reshot. and down a manufactured urban watercourse. “One time I edged way too hard on a heel side waketo-wake jump, and I let my legs get way out behind me like Superman, and I landed on my belly,” he continued. “I had to take a break after that one.”

But it did come together and in the end, it turned into an extremely well-crafted video that serves as a fun promotion for the sport. Where does all of this expertise, exposure, and industry attention lead for a six-year-old? First of all, says Kane, wakeboarding is fun. The favorite part is “being out on the water having fun with my family and friends.” It isn’t an early career path and if Kane unexpectedly decided he had had all he wants of wakeboarding, then, “while I would be disappointed,” said Justin, “that would be the end of it.” There does not appear to be an end in sight. Kane loves the sport. Wants to wakeboard every season of the year and enjoys learning new moves and tricks.

Justin adds that there is a serious side to what is happening as more people learn about Kane. “In the southeast in particular, the big three sports are baseball, basketball and football,” he said. “if a boy or girl isn’t good at one of those sports or doesn’t enjoy them, then somehow they don’t feel as worthy as other children. They can get down on themselves. It isn’t a good thing. Watersports like wakeboarding, wakeskating and wakesurfing offer children another sport; something else they can do, can be good at, can have fun with thelakesidelife.com | The Lakeside Life

and experience friendships and success within the sport. Particularly with cable systems like the one at Oak Mountain opening across the region, the sport is open to anyone who is interested. And they don’t have to have a boat or all the equipment to do it.

‘‘

We hope that Kane’s success will show others that they can have something that they can do and enjoy, and feel good about themselves that they have a recreational sport of their own.” Find Kane on social media: @raisingkane10 @raisingkane210

“We at Hyperlite Wakeboards are so proud to have Kane and his family as our newest ambassadors in the sport of wakeboarding in the Alabama region. He is such a positive influence to other kids and families in our sport, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for him!” Jeremy Baker, Hyperlite

“Kane has been a regular sight since day one. He keeps becoming the youngest rider to hit certain features or land tricks at the park. Kane continues to amaze me more and more each year. He even inspires the adult riders to step out of their comfort zones and try new tricks. We built a kicker on the beginner cable, and Kane became the youngest rider to land a flip off of it. We named it “Kane’s Kicker”. When some of the adults found out, they felt they needed to step up their game and start trying their first inverts. We really enjoy having Kane around, and every time the Birmingham news channels show up to do a piece on Flip Side, we call Kane to come give them a show. We couldn’t be more proud of how he carries himself, and promotes our sport.” Jeremy Talbot, Flip Side Watersports
