A LETTER FROM GLOW During Week of Listening, we hope to shed light on LGBTQ+ experiences at Lakeside and in the wider world — experiences that can cause a wide range of emotions from pride to shame. We hope that you will find the full spectrum of these lives lived reflected in these pieces. Queer people create art all around us, and while the excellence of this art is often recognized, its artists continue to face discrimination based on their identity. We want to recognize these artists, draw from their art and experiences, and recognize that art cannot be separated from its artists. While you may not know the personal histories of every Lakeside artist featured in this issue, we hope you will try to understand each piece and reflect on its significance. THE MEMORY PALACE To save yourself — forsake and flee — not grieve, A memory palace for lamenting him: For every ache create a make-believe Until you fill the building to the brim Cigar-ends, ash, the flask he always wears And lay the goldfinch corpse right by his case You nail dark lilies to the back of chairs The ring you clutch, like all things in this place, Belongs to your gone father. Though just half His body gone; the rest forever here — But suddenly, upstairs, you hear his laugh A jolt that cracks the static atmosphere Then ceilings shake, the palace falls like rain You jerk awake, your mind tearing from pain

DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP... A series of poems based on the first line and structure of mary elizabeth frye’s poem of the same name I.
do not stand at my grave and weep; let the moonlight pierce through the clouds and seep. let the birds circle in cool silence above, so that i may finally have something to love. let the flower petals wilt and sink into the dirt, so that i may ache instead of having to hurt. let the rain fall in sheets, let the tombstones run wet so that i may promise to never forget for i can not forgive if i can not remember, let the snow settle softly in the thick of december. do not kneel on my grave and pray; you should not come if you will not stay. II.
do not stand at my grave and weep; go home to your kitchen and watch the tea steep. take a stroll in the park as the leaves start to rust for keeping you here would simply be unjust. sink your toes in the grass; in the cool morning dew, for so much is out there just waiting for you. i will never hate you if you choose to move on — instead, i will watch in early hours of dawn as you lay asleep smiling despite my adieu,

and though i can not sleep, i will smile, too. do not lay on my grave and rot; it’s too late for me, but for you it is not III.
do not stand at my grave and weep; you let me die. you made me sleep. underneath the frothing ocean’s waves, i pour over all the other graves. their coffins littered with flowers in bloom, as mine lies empty, save for your gloom. your saccharine words don’t hold any real sorrow for i know you’ll forget my name by tomorrow. my death is an inconvenience to you, you’d agree — but you’ll swear to your friends that you tried to stop me. do not kneel on my grave and prayer; you should not cry if you do not care. IV.
do not stand at my grave and weep; for there is no grave, only endless deep. a darkness settles like mist on a field as the wound in my chest is slowly healed. i can still feel the knife’s metallic sting as i stand, it’s wooden hilt still heavy in the palm of my hand. i died as i lived — lost and alone. have i ever been more than cold ivory bone? there is only silence in the sharp autumn air — flower petals fall dead. the tree trunks are bare. no one stands at my grave to cry. if i am not mourned, did i truly die?
