LAKE TEXOMA LIFE
JUNE 2019
welcome ake life is our life, and working through winter and spring getting ready for the new lake season is the highlight of our year. We spend all winter working behind the scenes, planning and preparing, then spring comes along and before we know it— especially in Texoma— BAM! It’s summer. Lake Texoma is a lake for all seasons, and nothing beats summer fun at the lake— and that’s when all our fun events really get rocking. We have been working on some cool events this year. We’ve added a new one – the June Marina Crawl. Come out, grab a June Marina Crawl game card, and spend the month of June checking out Lake Texoma. Cards will be available by Memorial weekend. Most participating marinas are offering gifts for showing up with your game card in hand. You’ll get it stamped while you’re there and the idea is to get all the squares stamped. At the end of June, send in your completed card and we will order you an official June Marina Crawl T-shirt! Also, everyone who completes their marina crawl mission will be put in a drawing for some nice prizes, like a weekend getaway or boat rental. Join in the game and stop by our office or any of the participating marinas and purchase a June Marina Crawl game card for $20. We hope to make this an annual event. Last year we held our first open house at the Lake Texoma Association office in conjunction with our annual fireworks show, and it was a big success. We’re already planning this year’s event, and it’s going to be bigger and better, with a wet bounce house and slide and a food truck. This year our Open House/Fireworks Show is scheduled for Friday, July 5, so come on out! Everyone wants to see fireworks, and we are going to have plenty to do for the whole family while you wait for the show to start. We are over the moon about our annual Bash for Cash, slated for Thursday, August 15. This year’s theme is “Down on the Bayou,” and we are going to turn the Tanglewood Ballroom into the swampiest, swamp theme ever. And dinner? A shrimp boil with all the fixings, chicken filets with Cajun cream sauce (which we got to taste the other day, and it is amazing), cheese grits and bread pudding for dessert. DJ Jess is going to spin swamp tunes for us — she’s amazing! You won’t be able to stand how much fun this bash is going to be, so mark your calendars. It’s a terrific event, and for only $75 you get all that, plus beer, wine and our special blue swamp cocktail. We love this lake and love our Texoma communities. There is so much to offer here. If you need help planning a trip to Texoma or just a day at the lake, shoot us an email or give us a call! And don’t forget to follow up on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The Lake Texoma Association is a group of stakeholders in the Texoma region that support the mission of the LTA to protect and preserve Lake Texoma, as well as promote the entire Texoma region. If something is in the best interest of our lake, then you can bet the LTA is behind that plan every step of the way, with the cooperation of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, regional Chambers of Commerce, and individual businesses and stakeholders. The Lake Texoma Association is very much like a chamber of commerce, but with one major difference: the very diverse membership. Not just an organization of businesses and business people, LTA is made up of all types of concerned individuals who want to keep Lake Texoma the superb recreational and business area it is today. Lake Texoma Life is an official publication of the LTA, produced in cooperation with the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. Two thousand copies of Lake Texoma Life were produced at a cost of $1.50 each. Projected readership is 6,000.

water lovers BACK TO T H E LAK E APRIL 28 WAS A PERFECT DAY FOR SAILING on Lake Texoma, with mostly sunny skies and the wind at approximately 15 knots. The opening weekend of sailing season on the lake brought members of the Texoma Sailing Club to the water for the 2019 Lake Texoma Regatta. The Texoma Sailing Club, the organization behind the event, was founded in 1980 and currently has 100 members. The race for Sunday was on
6
course no. 2 — from the starting line to Washita Point and back. The race is 7.8 miles, and there were two cruising fleets and one leisure fleet. “We like the casualness and variety of conditions experienced in everyday sailing,” said Club Commander Angela Bell, whose duties include overseeing and leading club activities. Bell’s involvement with sailing began at 11 years old, when she was out with friends and got what she calls “the bug.” Bell
and her husband later bought a boat and began learning how to sail. They have had their third boat, Hummingbird, for eight years. “We absolutely love it.” Bell said. The pair do not race and consider themselves “leisure-only sailors.” They live in the North Dallas area and come up to Grandpappy on Lake Texoma to sail. Club Vice Commander Nicole Spruill said she and her husband and three children went sailing with a group of firemen, and over time it became a family event. Spruill said learning to sail was scary at times, but the family persevered. Now, they have a 32-foot boat named the “Cebu” that has been moored at Grandpappy Resort and Marina for 11 years. Spruill said she loves the science of sailing and learning

about angles and how to read and use the wind. Geoff and Donna Wallace have been sailing for about eight years and their boat, a Catalina 380, is named “Adelamte.” They go out every
weekend, weather permitting. “What we love is working with the wind, no matter what, (and) having to adapt to the conditions,” Geoff Wallace said. “We also love the
peace and quiet of sailing. Any day on Lake Texoma is a great day.” David Ramsey has been sailing for 30 years. “I was a motor boater and loved to water ski,” he said. “I just got

burned out, so I decided to make a switch.” Ramsey had a 39-foot Benteau that he raced for 13 years, and he currently has a 22-foot Catalina and 27-foot on Lake Dallas. He loves Lake Texoma, calling it the “perfect sailing lake.” “The predominate winds are out of the southeast,” he said. “The lake runs south — great for lake sailing. Lake Texoma is the best lake in the area for sailing.” A branch of Scouts of America, the Sea Scouts also take part in Texoma Sailing Club races. The group covers Southeast Oklahoma and Northeast Texas. The Texoma Sailing Club is a very active club with events year-round. In 2019 they will either hold or be involved with many races on the lake, and host many club activities and get-togethers including dinners, chili cook offs and dock parties. FOR A CAUSE Toby Keith Foundation to host fishing tournament, fundraiser on Lake Texoma
The Toby Keith Foundation’s 2019 Fish Bowl bass and striper tournament will be held on the waters of Lake Texoma on June 8. And while the competition will offer up thousands of dollars in prizes, the proceeds will ultimately be used to offer children who are fighting cancer, as well as their families, a place to stay as they seek treatment in Oklahoma. Held for the first time this year, the tournament will be centered at Catfish Bay Marina and award $10,000 to the first-place winner of the bass division. Organizers said they hope to register at least 150 boats for the event. Proceeds will benefit the foundation’s OK Kids Korral in Oklahoma City, which provides traveling families free accommodations as their children are treated at area medical centers. “We host other events throughout the year, like golf tournaments, 5K runs and things like that, but they’re almost always in the (OKC) Metro area. We wanted to do something in a new place where we’re actually helping the children who live there,” Toby Keith Foundation Executive Director Juliet Nees-Bright said. “We’re excited about this new tournament

and having it on Lake Texoma because we know there are children from the surrounding cities who stay with us, and we hope this will help create some added support for them.” Those interested in participating may register by mail until May 21 or online until June 7. Participants may also register in person at Catfish Bay Marina on June 7, during a mandatory captains’ meeting, beginning at 6 p.m. Competitors who are unable to attend the captains’ meeting in person must watch a live stream of the presentation online. In the bass division, the cost for a motorized-boat entry is $200, while the cost for a non-motorized-boat entry is $100. In the striper division, the
cost for a motorized-boat entry is $100, while the cost for a non-motorized-boat entry is $50. Participants who register ahead of the listed deadlines will be eligible for additional prizes. Since the OK Kids Korral opened in November of 2013, Nees-Bright said the facility has helped more than 600 families. Catfish Bay Marina is located at 11586 Rooster Creek Drive in Kingston, Oklahoma. Registration forms can be mailed to the Toby Keith Foundation at 818 Northeast 8th Street in Oklahoma City. one of the largest industries for Marshall County, so it was a way to give back to the people who visit Lake Texoma by holding a free festival.” Raley said organizers incorporated two new events this year: the Mack Stafford Memorial Softball Tournament and the Toby Keith Foundation’s 2019 Fish Bowl tournament. The double -elimination, co-ed softball tournament and home run derby kicks off the festival at 8 a.m. June 1 and is meant to raise money for local
student athletes. “It will benefit at least a couple of local high school students with college scholarships,” Raley said. Held on the final day of the festival, June 8, the Fish Bowl tournament is expected to draw some 150 competitor boats to Catfish Bay, where participants will try to reel in bass and stripers, as well as a $10,000 grand prize. Proceeds will be used to support the OK Kids Korral, which offers families of pediatric cancer patients free accommodations as
they seek treatment at facilities outside Oklahoma City. Raley said organizers were glad to partner with the first-time fishing tournament and it would revive a former tradition of the festival, when it ran from 1961 to 1976. “The first week in June is typically when sandbass in Lake Texoma run or spawn, so they used it to hold a week-long fishing tournament,” Raley said. “At the end, everything they caught was fried up and served, free of charge, to all the guests and visitors. The final year they did it, they served 27,000 plates on the last day.” After an 11-year hiatus, Raley said the festival was brought back in 1987 and has been held each year since with a renewed focus on free music concerts. Other events this year include a talent contest, cornhole and horseshoes tournaments, car show, martial arts performance, book sale and turtle races. “It should be a good time for everybody,” Raley said. Whether you’re stepping on the shores of Lake Texoma for a single, sunny afternoon or soaking in the views for many a long summer night, one thing you can’t help but visit on your trip is one of the lake’s 17 marinas. This summer, the Lake Texoma Association is hosting its first annual Marina Crawl throughout the month of June — inviting guests to travel to all corners of Lake Texoma to explore many of the marinas nestled throughout its 580 miles of shoreline. “The concept behind the Marina Crawl is to hopefully create a fun event that will get people around the lake to all of the marinas,” said Brandi Burkhalter, director of membership and events for the Lake Texoma Association. “I know we have our regular lake-goers who usually frequent one or two marinas they’re familiar with, but I’m hopeful they’ll participate and get around to most of (the others) to see what else Lake Texoma has to offer.”

HIGHPORT MARINA AT TANGLEWOOD RESORT & CONFERENCE CENTER IN POTTSBORO, TX IS ONE OF 17 MARINAS PARTICIPATING IN A MONTH LONG MARINA CRAWL THIS JUNE.
Participants can purchase a $20 Marina Crawl card at either the Lake Texoma Association office in Kingston or at any of the participating marinas and get “crawling” right away by car or boat. Each card will feature a map of the lake with the names and locations of the 17 participating marinas marked. Cards can be presented and stamped at any of the listed marinas, and after participants collect at least 15 stamps, their card is redeemable for a free marina crawl T-shirt. In addition, many participating marinas will be offering promotional
items to those who present their card. “The event is basically to add something new and different to the lake, and hopefully people can have a good time while doing it,” Burkhalter said. “Groups could make it a fun event for themselves and their friends. I’m also hopeful this event will help entice those who aren’t normal lake-goers and help them become more familiar with the lake, as well.” Participants have two weeks from the end of the crawl (June 30) to redeem their card in-person at the Lake Texoma Association office or via postal mail or email in order to receive their T-shirt and be entered into a series of drawings for various prizes. “We have several big item prizes (participants) will be entered

into a drawing for,” Burkhalter said. “We’ve had two-night cabin stays and four-hour and eighthour boat rentals donated, and a Choctaw Stay & Play package up for grabs.” While this summer is the first to host the event, Burkhalter is hopeful the crawl will find success among lake-goers and visitors alike— and that the easygoing atmosphere of lake life will translate to the crawl. “I just kind of came up with the idea. I saw something about a crawl of a different kind, but this is the very first one (at Lake Texoma),” Burkhalter said. “Drinking is not involved with the crawl unless they choose to drink on their own. They’re ‘crawling’ around the lake at their own pace and pleasure and experiencing what each marina has to offer. Participants can choose how and when they go.” For more information, call the Lake Texoma Association office at 580-564-2334 or message them on Facebook at www.facebook. com/laketexomaassociation.

LAKE TEXOMA The striper capital of the world LAKE TEXOMA FISHING IS A FISHERMAN’S DREAM COME TRUE. This 89,000-acre lake attracts a couple million fisherman a y e a r, and Texoma has the best documented natural spawn of striped bass of any lake in the country. But why is it the striper capital of the world? Our great lake offers most of the southern species of game fish, and while all are popular, the striped bass is what most people opt for. These saltwater transplants are possibly the strongest fighting fish in freshwater. Even the smaller fish will surprise you with how hard they pull and will fight you to the finish. The striper is a schooling fish, and group up in big herds. That means you may catch one and then everyone on board hooks up. They are curious creatures and aggressive feeders. This time of year, the striper come from spawning grounds and will group up in large schools. Thousands of hungry fish are chasing bait and are on a feeding frenzy. They surface early in the morning. The fish WHETHER FISHING SOLO OR WITH LOCAL GUIDES, will corral the bait and CATCHING STRIPER INVOLVES A BIT OF MUSCLE. THESE FISH ARE KNOWN TO PUT UP A FIGHT AND swim to the water’s surARE POSSIBLY THE STRONGEST FIGHTING FISH IN face. Once they reach the FRESH WATER. surface, the bait can run but can’t hide. The stripers attack and splash the water with a vengeance. In fact, you can see the splashing from a long distance. We pay attention to which direction the school of fish is moving; this is stealth fishing. Slowly motor your boat towards the action. Be careful not to spook the bait. Position the boat in front of the school and let them come towards you.
LAKE TEXOMA LIFE
JUNE 2019
We cast large top water plugs that swim like a crippled bait. The plug pops and rattles, and the stripers strike. Then the fight is on! Most times this is relatively close to your boat. Hold on, keep a tight line and reel fast. If your catch is stripping the line, you can stop reeling. Be ready to reel as soon as the fish allows. After an hour or so, top water action slows and the fish sound. They stay grouped together and change techniques. Now, we start slabbing. A slab is a lead spoon. We drop and let it fall to the bottom. Sometimes the fish will strike on the fall of the slab. Keep your
thumb near the reel’s spool. Be prepared to thumb the spool and turn the handle to engage the reel. Then on the retrieve, the striper will strike hard and almost set the hook themselves. People often ask us, ‘Can we catch them ourselves?’ Sure, you can! We advise beginners that trolling is a great way to locate and catch fish. Live bait bottom fishing is what most guides opt for and is the most popular method of catching. We at Striper Express use artificial lures. You are casting, setting the hook and fighting the fish to the finish. All three are great ways to

TO THE THE POINT RESTAURANT AT GRANDPAPPY POINT Marina & Resort on Lake Texoma was built sometime in the 1980s and operated as part of the marina with considerable success until the catastrophic flood of 2007. When the waters receded and the restaurant was rebuilt and reopened, it did so under a third party lease arrangement rather than the direct control of the marina. “We had multiple tenants in here, which we found wasn’t the right formula for success in this area, so we decided that as opposed to leasing it as a seasonal restaurant, we would hire management and staff we knew and trusted and return to the ideas and flair of the old Point Restaurant,” said Jason Cottingame, one of the owners and the general manager of BCB Marina Group, which operates Grandpappy Point and two other marinas on the lake. That idea appears to touch a memory with past customers, who remember the peel and eat shrimp, prime rib and regular Sunday brunch from days past. It’s been about 15 years since The Point was “The Point” , but this new operation seeks to restore what people used to like about the restau-
