History of the Lake Toxaway ARt Guild
Almost 30 years ago Bette Coningsby began sharing her love of painting by teaching some of her friends to paint. She invited her friend Elsie Dresch, a prominent Atlanta artist to conduct annual 3 day workshops. Art in Lake Toxaway Estates was blossoming. These artists decided to present their work to the general membership. In 1998 they started the first Lake Toxaway Art show to be held on the first Monday in October. It was a success! now an annual event in its 18th year, it will feature over 25 Lake Toxaway Estates artists. In the fall of 2008 a group of artists met to create the “Lake Toxaway Estates Painters Guild.” The guild’s purpose is: “To provide members with access to workshops, art appreciation, field trips, demonstrations, and a means of exhibiting and selling their work. Also to promote art and goodwill among artists in Lake Toxaway Estates.” In addition to presenting the annual Lake Toxaway Art Show the guild meets the 3rd Thursday of each month May through October at 9:30 AM at the community room of the Lake Toxaway Methodist Church. Each meeting features an art related program. Normally there are two or three visiting artists workshops offered during the year. Art guild membership is encouraged and open to all residents of Lake Toxaway Estates. Interested persons should contact Cathy Cooper for more information. cathryn.artist@gmail.com or 828-966-9376

Cathryn Cooper
Cathryn was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She displayed talent at an early age and began private instruction with Atlanta artist Kathryn Burke at age 6. She continued her studies of drawing and painting and earned a scholarship to Atlanta College of Art, now Savannah College of Art and Design, in 1976 After graduation in 1980 with a BFA in Fine Arts, her main focus was painting and photography. With a love of music and theatre as well, she maintained her involvement in the arts community working at the Woodruff Arts Center. Cathryn has participated in shows throughout the southeast and in 1993 she won a competition sponsored by Argo Wiggins, parent company of Arches Paper. In celebration of their 500 year anniversary of the Arches Paper Mill operation in Epinal, France, she personally presented her winning paper collage which now hangs in the mill’s headquarters. That inaugural visit to France inspired further trips overseas to document her sojourns in photographs. Cathryn’s award winning photography is another voice for her expression.

Bette Coningsby
God has created all the beauty that surrounds us in nature and in people. If I, through my art can invoke an emotion and capture a moment in time of God’s beauty, then I have been successful. My years of experience and my professional background enables me to render paintings in oils and pastels in a impressionist style. Utilizing color to harmonize and complement a color scheme, I am capable of responding to a wide variety of subjects from tranquil streams, vibrant sunsets, morning mists, ocean sunrises, mountain vistas and beautiful gardens. I readily accept commissions from special photographs of landscapes and people. I enjoy working with decorators and designers to create a mood or enhance a room. My portraits begin with a personal meeting and photo shoot followed by a final sitting. I also do paintings of pets and homes from your photos.

dick dellalonga
Born and raised in New York City, Dick studied at the Art Student League, Pratt Institute and participated in several week long work shops with prominent wildlife artists. His goal, as a wild life artist, was to render nature’s creatures as realistic and natural as they appear in the wild. He has, through his paintings, successfully contributed in bringing their world and ours a little closer. Over the years, Dick has been awarded several “Best in Show” and numerous “Judges Choice” in major Wildlife Festivals, expositions and art shows throughout the country. He also had 2 winning entries in the National Wildlife Stamp competitions and has had several one-man shows. As a prolific painter and an accomplished photographer, Dick completes 10 to 12 major paintings a year and has 12 limited edition prints currently in circulation.

Sue Fazio
Sue Fazio paints all day EVERY day.... Well at least that’s the truth she’d like to live! Although she received her BFA in 1984 she didn’t “start” painting full-time until she and Tom moved to Lake Toxaway in 2000 (6 kids/6 moves/countless kids’ events/trips later). Her painting career began with oils and animals and evolved to pastel landscapes and then REALLY big abstracts in acrylics (a 36’X5’ hangs in her home in Florida). In 2007 she got fired up with encaustics! Sue has participated in many individual as well as group shows. Currently she is represented by 3 galleries (Art Cellar/Banner Elk, Silver Fox/Hendersonville, Davant Interiors/Stuart, Florida). All of the proceeds from her paintings are donated to The Boys and Girls Club of Hendersonville that she and her husband founded in 1993.

Jim Hefley
When Jim Hefley relocated to WNC he combined his passion for painting with his love of the many beautiful streams of the area. Hefley’s paintings feature a beautiful trout stream with a fly fisherman. He also paints landscapes showcasing beautiful mountain vistas and spectacular waterfalls in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Jim lived and worked in Europe for a number of years. Because of that experience, he creates a number of landscapes of scenes in England, France, and Italy, including colorful paintings of lavender fields in Provence, vineyards and villas in Tuscany, and barges on the canals of France and England. Hefley aslo enjoys doing oil paintings on a commission basis since the landscape scenes chosen by clients are very special to them and very diverse in subject matter. Jim donates a portion of the proceeds from all sales of paintings to several excellent non-profit organizations: NC Trout Unlimited Youth Camp, Casting Carolinas, and the Hope Cancer Center for Women.

Bianca Mitchell
Bianca holds a BA, summa cum laude from Brevard College. Following her graduation Bianca continued her artistic mixed media exploration in her home art studio. The immediacy involved in mixed media frees the hand and allows for the work to be raw, eager, a little un-done, much like nature itself. Capturing the essence of nature and the human spirit continues to be Bianca’s most sacred of inspirations. Bianca is proud to serve on the Friends of the Fine Arts Steering Committee (FOFA) for Brevard College. Bianca is also thrilled to be the Lake Toxaway Art Guild’s newest member.
