The biggest event of the year is just around the corner! Our annual Fourth of July Celebration will be held on Friday, July 4, with more fun events happening before and after. You can view the full calendar of events on the back of the July calendar in this newsletter. As always, we will make every attempt to end the evening with fireworks. Be sure to check your email and the club’s website (laketoxawaycc.com) for any weather-related updates. Looking ahead to the end of the month, the annual Lake Toxaway Charities events will be held at the club on July 26. In addition, you should have recently received sponsorship and registration information for our Patriot Weekend activities on August 30. Mark your calendar and make plans to participate in these two great events. Our club’s Aspirations Committee has been hard at work to learn what our members might like to see in a future clubhouse. They are hosting a series of Focus Groups conducted by Jeff Weller of Summit Architects. If you have not already participated in a focus group, please plan to attend one soon. The next focus groups are scheduled for July 12 and July 25. Please call Laura Johnson to sign up. Also in July, the club will be updating our pictorial membership album by offering professional portrait sittings for you and your family. This provides a convenient opportunity for you to have photographs made, but will also help our seasonal staff in our efforts to better recognize our members. Look for more information and instructions on page 2 of this issue and coming soon in your June statements. As always, thank you for your participation and continued support. David Dew, CCM, CCE President

Professional Portraits at the Club We are updating our online member directory with new photographs! In July, the club will be offering professional portrait sittings for you and your family with EA Photography, a national studio that has worked specifically with clubs since 1945. This provides a convenient opportunity for you to have photographs made, and will also help our seasonal staff to better recognize our members. Starting July 30, the photographer will be available at the Learning Center by appointment only on Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am to 7:00pm. The portrait sitting will take approximately 30 minutes and is absolutely free. You are welcome to purchase portraits, but there is no obligation to do so. We do ask that you select a photo that we can add to our online directory. To make this project successful, it is important that we have participation from each and every member. An appointment secretary will be contacting you to schedule your portrait sitting. If you prefer, you may call the EA Photography Scheduling Department at 1-800-653-5766, x255 or email MyClubPortraits@eaclubs.com. More information will be coming with your June statement. Thank you for your participation!

GOLF From Our Golf Pro... Pace of play is a concern at every golf course. No one wants to be stuck on the course behind a slow group all day. We want to encourage people to play golf. Play READY GOLF! Be ready to play when it’s your turn. Always be aware of keeping up with the group in front of you. The “Tee it Forward” program is backed by the PGA to make the game of golf more enjoyable. If you feel comfortable playing from a shorter set of tees, leave your ego in the cart and give it a try. The club’s WeatherBug lightning alert system is for your protection. When the alarm sounds, always seek your safest shelter immediately. Return to the clubhouse as soon as possible. You can always go back out when it is safe. Carts are to operate using the Post System. Carts may enter fairway at the first post and MUST return to the path at the second post. Using this system will help to keep our course in better condition. We ask that you drive in the fairway when allowed, not in the rough. This will be effective as soon as you see the stakes on the course. Congratulations to our recent tournament winners! Bruce Young and Ted Veit shot a two-day better ball of partners of 128 to claim victory in our Men’s Member-Member Tournament. They Suzanne Cognetta, and Connie Leppard won this year’s Ladies Partner Ringer Tournament. After shooting a better ball of partners of 49 to tie with Billie Messer and Pinky Israel, the team of Cognetta and Leppard birdied the first hole in a playoff to win the event. The 9-Hole Ladies Member-Member Tournament was won by the team of Mary Ellen Williams and Bunny Jones. They shot a net better ball of 33. We have had some great record-setting play in June. Larry Bradner shot a personal best score of 83 and Chris Ure shot a personal best score of 67. Suzy Ruth Young broke 100 for the first time shooting 92. Billie Messer broke 90 for the very first time with a birdie on Hole #18, and said it was an “awesome feeling.” Congratulations are also in order for Dr. Corrine Rodgers and Jay Herbert, Jr., who both made a Hole in One on #13. Great playing, everyone!

Looking ahead, don’t forget about the upcoming interclub matches, listed on the following page. And if you haven’t already done so, be sure to sign up for our

Golf Course Superintendent Update The greens are doing extremely well right now, in spite of some of the wet and humid weather that we have been experiencing lately. In order to properly prepare the greens for the tough summer conditions that are just around the corner, it is necessary to do a process called “venting” the greens. This is done by creating a small 1⁄4” hole through the surface of the green to allow air, water infiltration, and nutrients to reach the root zone. These small holes have minimal impact on the putting surface and are generally completely gone from sight within 5-7 days. We will roll the greens for several days following this process to maintain a smooth putting surface even though the holes will be visible. We did the chipping green this past Monday; the picture to the right shows the holes that will be created. This is a very important preventative maintenance process to keep the greens in championship-type condition throughout the summer. This process will be done as weather permits. We should have the area near the #15 tee finished by next week. This area was used as a storage area during the drainage project, and we also utilized this material to construct the new ladies tee box on Hole #18. The weather has impacted the speed in which we have finished this area, but we are very close to completion, weather permitting. We will then move on to the area behind the #17 tee area. We finished cleaning out the pond/creek area at the #8 tee last week. This area had accumulated a great deal of silt over the years and was in desperate need of having it all removed. The pond looks much better and the water is now able to flow properly from the adjacent creek. We will monitor this area closely and make every effort to prevent this accumulation from happening again. Mike Smith Director of Golf Maintenance and Staff LAKE TOXAWAY COUNTRY CLUB

CROQUET Croquet Update... Hello CROQUETNUTS! June play on the lawns got off to a rousing start, with our Monday Wine & Wickets regularly drawing in excess of sixty players and 50/50 pots of $100 plus. The club has been doing a great job of feeding us after play. Don’t forget to get online and make your dinner reservations.

Feast with Friends with Nancy Avera Monday, July 14 6:00pm Cocktails | 6:30pm Dinner Seating is limited and reservations are required; RSVP online or call (828) 966-4020. Speaking of eating, our first “Feast with Friends” of the season could not have been any more successful or interesting. The Main Dining Room, 19th Hole, and porch were packed with members to hear Harry Follmann’s account of his Mount Everest summit attempt and to preview his newly-released novel. Not only were his photographs amazing, but you could hear a pin drop in the crowded room as he described the ascent. Thank you, Harry, for a job well done. Our next “Feast with Friends” will be July 14, with our very own Nancy Avera providing the evening’s enrichments. History tells us to make reservations early, as these events are usually sold out. The fun just keeps going on as the Lake Toxaway Mallet Club hosted Highlands Falls for another successful and social interclub. Ted Mullet has been doing an outstanding job coordinating these events. All Lake Toxaway Mallet Club participants have been receiving their own personal nametags for each

CROQUET interclub event, which last all season. We got a little more competitive with our recent interclub match with Chattooga. This was a more formal format, and our CROQUETNUTS bested the Chattooga team 35-23. When the heat is on, our cream rises to the top.

George Bagwell in the Chattooga Tournament

Participants in the Highlands Falls Interclub On the subject of Chattooga and competition, George Bagwell is at it again in top form. He went undefeated in the First Flight in the grueling five-day Chattooga Club Mountain Laurel Tournament. Congratulations to George for earning another notch on his mallet. We are all proud of you. Raquel Ferraro is back in form with our Sunday afternoon singles golf croquet play. Come on down to the courts at 3:00pm and take advantage of a chance to improve your play. We all need to get ready for the club tournament and the Lake Toxaway Charities Event on July 26.

Weekly Croquet Events: Wine & Wickets | Mondays at 3:30pm Instruction begins at 3:00pm Dinner to follow at 6:30pm Golf Croquet Singles | Sundays at 3:00pm

A fun and full day of activities lasting well into the evening is scheduled. With the help of the alwaysable Bill Minnich, we will be coordinating a doubles golf croquet tournament. Please remember to make your reservations and pick your partner for play. Rumor has it that George Enochs, Raquel, and others are working with the club and the community association to host our summer teen club members on the croquet lawns. What a great way to introduce them to the game! Wow, June has been busy and July promises to be even busier and more fun-filled. Can you stand it, CROQUETNUTS? Ok, here are the usual final messages: Have you paid your dues? Are you getting online and making reservations? Do you want to call Kenny Lovett for lessons? TENNIS From our Tennis Pro... I want to thank everyone for making June so much fun on the tennis courts. We had a record month for participation in our tennis events, court play, and tennis clinics. The fun begins at 9:00am with round robin play, games, prizes, and refreshments for everyone until 12:00pm. The cost is $15 per person. Then at 2:30pm, come back and watch the Pro Doubles Exhibition. Our Kids Fun Day clinic and games for ages 4-7 will be held on Saturday, July 5 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm. Cost is $15 and all levels are welcome. Our annual Margarita Mixer/Cookout will be held on Tuesday, July 15. This will be fun for everyone with great social tennis and a way to meet new friends. On Saturday, July 26, come out for our Lake Toxaway Charities Pro-Am Tennis Event. Be sure to sign up asap if you are interested, as this event is limited to the first 10 men/ladies and it fills up fast. Ladies will play with pros from 8:30am to 10:30am, followed by the men from 10:30am to 12:30pm. A Pro Doubles Exhibition will follow at 2:00pm with former ATP great Lawson Duncan. Thank you all for your tremendous support of Korey; your letters have been so amazing. Korey became the youngest player to win the Crown State Profesional Tennis Tournament in the 30-year history of this pro tournament. (John Isner, America’s top ATP-ranked tennis player played this event 4 times with his best showing in the semi-finals.) Korey remains humble and thankful for his Lake Toxaway family. You have watched Korey grow up and train right here in Lake Toxaway from age 2 till now at age 18, and you will always be in our hearts. We are truly blessed to have members as wonderful as you. See you on the courts! Kenny Lovett

FITNESS Use It or Lose It: Dancing Makes You Smarter! Research suggests there are many health benefits of dancing: it can reduce stress, increase serotonin levels, and improve your sense of well being. New research even suggests that frequent dancing can make us SMARTER! A major study added to the growing evidence that stimulating one’s mind by dancing can ward off Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, much like physical exercise can keep the body fit. Dancing also increases cognitive acuity at all ages. As reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, this study looked to see if any physical or cognitive recreational activities influence mental activity. They discovered that some activities had a significant beneficial effect, while other activities had none. One of the surprises of the study was that almost none of the physical activities appeared to offer any protection against dementia. However, there was one important exception: frequent dancing, which showed the greatest reduction of dementia risk for any activity studied, cognitive or physical. Neurologist Dr. Robert Katsman proposed that those who danced were more resistant to the effects of dementia as a result of having greater cognitive reserve. Dancing integrates several brain functions at once: body awareness, as well as rational, musical, and emotional acuity, which further increasing your mind/body connectivity. The kinds of dancing that lead to increased mental activity are those that require making many split-second decisions. In social dancing, the ladies’ follow role automatically gains a benefit by making hundreds of these decisions. This benefit is greatly enhanced by dancing with different partners. But men can also match her degree of decision-making by really paying attention to your partner and what works best for her. That’s basically rapid-fire split-second decision-making. Also, don’t lead the same old patterns the same way each time. The study made another important suggestion: Dance often. More is better. And do it now! CLUBHOUSE House Committee Update... This year’s House Committee members are Bill Anderson, Donna Bradner, Dave Eager, Mimi Elder, Bette Lathrop and Jeanette Schuyler. After numerous meetings and work sessions the committee has refurbished the main dining room, the ladies locker room and ladies restroom in the main clubhouse. The main dining room now has a new fireplace, mantel, and chandeliers, with new sconces coming in July. The committee is particularly proud to have member Bob Coley’s original art over the mantel. A new mirror and sconces have been placed in the main building’s foyer. The Toxaway Room has a new look highlighting Lake Toxaway’s principal sports, including a special work of art above the mantel. More projects will be completed in July. Member Bob Coley and Keith Rider install the original art above the mantel in the Main Dining Room

The committee greatly appreciates the assistance of members Hank Schuyler, Bob Coley and Bob Coningsby and staff members Lou Biago, Tiffany Avirett, Keith Rider, Amanda Carson and Tara Rybka.

Thank you to Patty McDonough... Thank you to Patty McDonough and Jack’s family for giving the club Jack’s Bobby Jones tapestry portrait. The House Committee accepted their gift as the centerpiece of the Toxaway Room’s recent makeover. In 1930, Mr. Jones completed his famous Grand Slam; the second victory came at Royal Liverpool. Artist J.A.A. Berrie was commissioned to paint a portrait of Jones to commemorate his win at The Open. Throughout that summer, as Jones completed this historical feat, Berrie painted other poses, but all using the same blue cardigan sweater worn by Mr. Jones in the first portrait. They can be viewed at Royal Lypham, Augusta National, and the Atlanta History Center. In 1915, a family of Italian immigrants started the company that is now Valdez Weavers in Burke County, NC. Some years back, a Valdez customer requested that its artisans create a tapestry of the Jones portriat and other paintings. The Berrie portrait from which our tapestry was woven now sits in the Augusta National clubhouse. 10

Mr. Jones and Jack both loved the game of golf. Jack adored Toxaway. We celebrate having in our midst this notable sports art and one of Jack’s special memories.

I would like to extend my gratitude to all who have been so welcoming of me and our staff to the club. As I mainly managed the Lakeside Dining Room last year, I was unable to attend the Twilights, Friday nights, Wine & Wickets, and all of the special dinners that we have here at the club. This year, I am having a blast seeing all of you so often! I would like to introduce you to one of our new managers. Erika Kofler is a Certified Club Manager who brings a wealth of knowledge to Lake Toxaway with previous experience at Houston Country Club, Biltmore Forest Country Club, The Ford Plantation in Georgia, and The Greenbrier Erika Kofler, CCM in White Sulphur Springs, WV. Erika loves being outdoors in the mountains of western North Carolina and spending time with her dog, Scout. She is looking forward to getting to know our members. June has been a very exciting month, and I greatly look forward to an even better July. Please remember to make reservations for dinner in advance and take advantage of the great menu options that we are offering. With the Fourth of July Celebration, our Lake Toxaway Charities dinner/dance, and many other special dining options, I hope to see even more of you and your families on the grounds. Chris Cooper

From our Event Coordinator... This summer is getting off to a great start! We have had many fun-filled special events in June, from the packed house at our Welcome Back party at the beginning of the month to a wonderful evening with Brevard Music Center just this last week. With July right around the corner, things are really starting to get busy at the club! We have many exciting activities planned for the beginning of the month: our annual Fourth of July Celebration on Friday, July 4 will be great fun for all. If you haven’t already made reservations, be sure to do so soon, as the price increases within 48 of the event. Then be sure to enjoy our always-popular Seafood Buffet on July 5. We know that many of you have family in town this time of year, and have planned some special fun for kids of all ages at our Family Night featuring the magician Haydini on July 2 and another Family Night with a trivia contest on July 9.

FAMILY NIGHTs

Mark your calendars and get ready for a great month. I hope to see you all very soon!

We have exciting news for those of you who love coffee! The club now has a new coffee flavor throughout the club. Caffe Sumatra is rich, thick, syrupy, and heavy with chocolatey and earthy undertones. Harvested from the world’s finest coffee plantations, Villa Rey is roasted to be the heaviest coffee of the Sumatra offering and pairs wonderfully with Chef Greg’s desserts.
