We can all be extremely proud to be part of a community that is so generous when it comes to supporting great causes, and it should come as no surprise that some of our members have taken the “Ice Bucket Challenge” to benefit the ALS Association. Participants and spectators had great fun incorporating the Ice Bucket Challenge as part of our Thursday Twilight on August 21. Our “Cool Volunteers” were featured in the lead story on WLOS News 13 that evening, and Bruce Young has issued an official challenge to the other area clubs to take part in the icy sensation sweeping the nation.

Bob Graham, Bruce Young, Joe Buttigieg, Chip Brown, George Enochs, Reg Heinitsh, and Mike Wright were inspired to take the challenge on behalf of either a close friend, relative, or spouse who suffered from ALS

Patriot Golf Day will be held on Saturday, August 30. Opportunities to participate include the golf tournament beginning at 8:20am, yoga on the lawn at 9:00am, a tennis tournament at 10:30am, and a croquet event at 1:00pm. This nationwide event supports the Folds of Honor Foundation to provide educational scholarships to families of armed forces members who have been killed or wounded. Natural Retreats will be hosting a special “Friday Friends” event on August 29. All members are invited to come to the club for a complimentary cocktail party. The event will begin at 5:30pm on the Toxaway Porch, where the leadership team from Natural Retreats will be on hand to share their future plans and answer any questions. Be sure to check out the September issue of Southern Living magazine featuring the Southern Living Honeymoon Suite at the Greystone Inn. On behalf of the entire club staff, I would like to thank you for choosing to be in Lake Toxaway for what has been an amazing summer. We look forward to seeing you at the club in September. David Dew, CCM, CCE President

GOLF Golf Course Superintendent Update Summer is coming to an end, and it is time to start performing some much-needed tasks on the golf course that will help make sure the quality of conditioning continues to improve each year. It is important to take full advantage of September’s cooler temperatures prior to any frost events that can adversely effect turf recovery and weed removal. Greens aeration is scheduled for September 8 and 9 and will also include some work to the approaches in front and around the greens. We will be creating a much smaller hole compared to the spring, which will aid in faster recovery and much less sand for topdressing. We will have the greens clean and smooth for play immediately following this process and I anticipate full recovery in roughly two weeks. Aeration is essential to providing quality playing surfaces as it removes thatch, increases water infiltration and gas exchange, and firms the putting surface. We will work extremely hard to provide as smooth a playing surface as possible to minimize the disruption through the first week of healing. By the second week, the holes should have little impact on the putting surface. The thatch in the fairways and approaches is quite excessive, so we are performing a process called “Dry Ject to the approaches or areas directly in front of the greens. This will also be done on September 8 and 9. This process includes injecting sand every 3 inches into the soil profile to help firm the area and increase water infiltration. We will follow this process up in November with core aeration and sand topdressing. It is important to understand that an aggressive approach is necessary in order to improve the conditions of the fairways and approaches. These areas drain poorly and are very soft and spongy. The excessive thatch promotes a shallow root system that requires more water in order to survive. I am sure everyone has noticed some of the dry spots on the tees and fairways as we have tried to take a much more conservative approach with regards to our water management. 4

LAKE TOXAWAY COUNTRY CLUB

My biggest disappointment this first season has been the weeds in the primary rough and high grass areas. Now is the time to get aggressive with spraying and removing as much as possible prior to the first frost event. Once the frost arrives it will shut down and brown out the weeds, killing some but leaving the most aggressive lying in wait for next spring and summer. Hitting them with an herbicide application before this takes place is a very important step to cleaning up these areas. We will begin to mow down the high grass areas in order to make these applications. Nutsedge is a very prominent weed in this area, and our primary rough is infested with it. I have held off on spraying it due to the unsightly effect it will have on these areas. Now that our main golfing events have passed, we will begin to address these areas. You will see some significant browning and then death of some large patches throughout the rough. We will fertilize and seed as necessary, but please be aware that the discoloration of these areas will be expected. Thank you all for your continued support as we strive to provide the best possible playing conditions for all of our members and guests. Mike Smith Director of Golf Maintenance and Staff

All 18 holes of the golf course will be closed September 8 - 9. Thank you for your patience

TENNIS From our Tennis Pro... It’s so hard to believe how fast our summer has gone and how much activity we have had this year. Thank you to everyone for making our socials, clinics, and kids program so active and so much fun. This was our busiest summer in the last 10 years! I would also like to say a special thanks to our Lake Toxaway family for your cards and support for my son Korey. Only 14 years ago, he was in the Tiny Tots program, and this summer he helped me teach it. What a joy to have watched him grow up here in Lake Toxaway with so many wonderful people in his life. Korey is doing great at the University of Alabama and sends his love to all of you. Tuesday, September 16, we will have a Pro-Am Challenge at Men’s Day with local pros. This will be lots of fun for everyone, so join us on the courts at 9:00am. Congratulations to Carol Guffey for hitting 3 straight aces! As I was her partner, the impressive thing was that Carol hit all 3 in the same game. Great playing, Carol. Don’t forget to drop your racquets off for end-of-season restringing. See you on the courts!

CROQUET Croquet Update... Hello to all CROQUETNUTS! August has been our busiest month this season. We have had record turnouts for Wine & Wickets, which means record 50/50 raffles. What are we going to do with all of that money? It was suggested that we erect statues in honor of Mallet Kings George I and George II but decided that there were too many bird flyovers on a daily basis and the implication of the result seemed improper. Another season-ending cookout is still a pretty fitting use of funds. Well, no surprise to any, we had another sold out Feast With Friends evening with our own Steve Rogers reliving his traversing of the English Channel. A good meal with good friends and a good tale. Thanks Steve! Don’t forget to make your reservations for our last Feast with Friends on September 8 where our keynote speakers will be from Friends of Panthertown, who take charge of the preservation and maintenance of all of our trails in the Panthertown Wilderness. These are dedicated souls with a dedicated mission. Remember that the only constant with these dinners is they are always sold out. LTCC always has provided us with spectacular food and we have always reciprocated with a huge crowd. Has there been another LTCC event that is held that frequently and is always that well attended? This CROQUETNUT thinks not.

Aw, shucks!

American Rules Champions

Many kudos to Bob Graham for taking the ALS Ice Bucket plunge at the August 18 Wine and Wickets. It turned out to be a well-attended and well-funded event. But what else would a CROQUETNUT expect? August is always Mallet Club championship month, and this year was a wicketly successful event. We had eight doubles teams compete in the American Rules Championship and 32 players register for the Singles Golf Championship. We had one flight for the AR play and ended with five flights plus the championship flight for the golf play. The finals were held Monday, August 25 after our annual meeting. Congratulations to our American Rules Club Championship team of Jeannette Wilkes and George Bagwell as they defeated the Armand DeLaPerreiere/ Les Avera team in a hotly-contested match. The Golf Championship playoffs took place on the hottest day of the year and due to the improvement of all of the CROQUETNUTS’ skills, it turned out to be an all-day affair and into the next to get to the six flight finals. Fortunately, due to the excellent physical condition of all the players, no one passed out. Here are the final results: 5th Flight – Mary Smith defeated Melba Bishop 4th Flight – Carol Harden defeated Bill Minnich 3rd Flight – Paul Cooper defeated Dave Wilkes 2nd Flight – Dale Mackie defeated Jim Dockter 1st Flight – Don Molitor defeated Gary Harden And in the Championship Flight Nancy Avera defeated Alan McDonald CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS & RUNNERS-UP! WELL DONE!

CROQUET The Annual Awards dinner was held that evening. It was rumored that our distinguished president’s highlight of the evening was receiving a thank you kiss from two of our male flight winners. Unfortunately, no pictures were taken. Sincerely, though, George deserves many, many thanks for never losing his smile during the entire successful Club Championships. Job well done! Welcome to our new LTMC Treasurer, Alan McDonald, and our new Social Chairs, Sherry Minnich and Dell Reardon. Do not forget about the Patriot Day croquet event and that our corny brethren Les Avera and Gene Bishop are hosting--along with the LTCC--yet another barbecued chicken and corn on the cob “stuff your face until you drop” picnic on September 1. Make those reservations. Remember to sign up or come down to watch the USCA-sanctioned Lake Toxaway Golf Croquet Tournament on September 18-20 and keep an eye out for news about our upcoming interclub championships. And finally, in the words of Thomas Mayne Reid from the Guinness Dictionary of Sports Quotaions:

Praise the sports of the land and water, each one. The bath by the beach or the yacht on the sea. But of all the sweetest pleasures known under the sun, A good game of croquet’s the sweetest to me.

FITNESS Morning Exercises to Energize Your Day by Chris Freytag /ACE Fitness.org

If you have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning, an energizing Pilates routine may be just the thing to jumpstart your internal alarm clock. This workout will get you going even before you get out of bed. Or, if a harder surface is desired, use the space at the side of your bed—you don’t even have to change out of your pajamas! These Pilates exercises will lengthen you, stretch you and help “align” your day. Rolling Like a Ball (works the abdominals, massages the spine)

Sit on the bed or floor with your knees bent and your spine rounded into a C curve. Lightly place your hands on the knees. Inhale and rock back until the bottom of your shoulder blades touch the bed or floor, and then exhale and pull the navel to the spine and come back up to a balance. Repeat eight to 10 times. Single-Leg Stretch (works the abdominals) Lie on your back with your knees bent to the chest and toes pointed. Engage the abdominal muscles to lift your head and shoulders off the bed

or floor. Relax the front of your neck as you hold yourself up with the strength of your abs and midback; look at your knees. Inhale and draw your left knee toward the chest as you extend your right leg about 45 degrees above the bed or floor. Switch and do eight to 10 repetitions on each side. Single-Leg Circles (works the hips, inner and outer thighs, hamstrings and abdominals)

Lie with your right leg extended to the sky (bend the knees 90 degrees if your hamstrings are tight) and your left leg flat on bed. Engage your abs and point your right foot and rotate the leg; inhale and trace a small circle on the ceiling with your toe, moving the entire leg from the hip socket. Think of your leg like a spatula scraping the sides of the bowl (the hip socket). Do eight to 10 circles and repeat on other side.

CLUBHOUSE From the House Committee... The House Committee completed the last of this season’s budgeted projects on August 6. Thanks to many hours searching for the right fabric, furniture industry icon Woody Williams’ purchasing power, several member volunteers, and club staff, 113 dining room chairs were recovered in new Robert Allen fabric in three days! The committee is very appreciative of the unselfish assistance given by Susan and Carter Hopkins, Elaine Boyer, Karen Phillips, Jean Merritt, Wes Dickman, and facilities personnel Tiffany Avirett and Keith Rider to complete the project in time for Member-Guest weekend.

Karen Phillips and Jeannette Schuyler

Separately, I want to thank House Committee members Donna Bradner, Mimi Elder, Bette Lathrop, Jeanette Schuyler, Dave Eager and ad-hoc member Hank Schuyler. In years past, club committees basically were advisers only. This year, we truly were a “working” committee, expending much personal time and labor to complete our projects.
