President’s Message from David Dew Welcome to a new season in Lake Toxaway! When you return, you will see that spring has finally arrived. We had our own version of March madness as Mother Nature surprised everyone with lingering cold temperatures. Fortunately, we have rebounded in April and despite receiving over 40 inches of rain so far this year, our golf maintenance crew has done an amazing job of getting the course ready for play. The tennis courts were completed well ahead of schedule and Kenny has been rolling the surfaces daily to make sure they are ready for play. The tennis shop interior has received a brand new look, and will have all the finishing touches complete in early May. We would like to extend a special thanks to our Tennis Committee, and especially to Jeanette Schuyler, for helping provide guidance. Be sure to make plans to be in Lake Toxaway for our Member Welcome Back Party on Friday, June 7. This will be a night of complimentary bar-b-cue, bluegrass, and locally-brewed beer. Other Carolina culinary favorites will include a gourmet country ham bar and your favorite fixin’s. Head Brewmaster Noah Tuttle from the new Oskar Blues brewery in Brevard will be here to present his new Transylvania County brew. Oskar Blues is widely known for six craft-brewed beers, and was recently named “Craft Brewer of the Year” by Beverage World Magazine. Please call the club receptionist or register online to let us know you plan to attend. It will be great to see everyone back in Lake Toxaway.

GOLF Welcome back! We are looking forward to another busy and great season. The staff anxiously awaits your arrival. Upon your return, you will notice some new staff members. Our new assistant professional is Anthony Hollis. Originally from West Palm Beach, he now resides in the Cashiers area. Anthony attended Florida Atlantic University in business and is enrolled in the PGA Program on his final level for membership. His past employment has been at PGA National, Dave Pelz Golf Schools, and Highland Falls Country Club. Joining the outside services operations will be Jonathan Morrow, who previously worked at the Learning Center the past few years. The golf schedule for 2013 is a busy one. The season kicks off with Men’s Opening Day on May 15, followed by the first Twilight on May 16. Make sure to mark your calendar for this year’s Member-Guest Tournaments: Ladies Member-Guest will be held on July 16, and Men’s Member-Guest will be August 8, 9, and 10. Also remember that you can access starting times online. The Carolina’s Section has finally partnered with the GHIN Handicap System as of January. This system will enable members who belong to other clubs besides Lake Toxaway to have their scores transmitted to all of your clubs at once. Each member has been assigned a GHIN Number. If you already have a GHIN, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible so you can use the same number here. We are in the process of implementing Senior Ladies Tees on the course. I have contacted the Carolina’s Golf Association to come rate the course from these tees. Steve has also lowered the rough height by a half inch to two inches, which should help with the playability of the course. 2

Golf Maintenance Steve Turner Director of Golf & Grounds Operation Trees are beginning to bloom, grass is turning green, and members are returning: all are sure signs of spring. We look forward to providing the best conditions possible for our members and their guests. The golf maintenance crew completed the greens aerification, and I am very pleased with the results. We will continue with the greens at the Learning Center, tees on the course and Learning Center, and the croquet courts. We thank you for your patience during this process and will strive to interrupt play as little as possible. Welcome back from the golf maintenance crew!

This year, we will have new tennis balls featuring the Lake Toxaway logo available for sale in the tennis/croquet pro shop. These are great for gifts as well as play! Don’t forget to drop off your racquets to be restrung when you arrive. They will be ready the next day, guaranteed. Men’s day begins on Tuesday, May 14 at 9:00am, and Ladies Day begins on Wednesday, May 15 at 10:30am. All of you who are here, please come out for a fun social day of tennis to start off the season. Monday, May 27 is our annual Memorial Day Tennis Mixer. Join us for tennis play in a round robin format from 10:30am to 12.30 pm. This will be lots of fun for all levels, with games, prizes, and refreshments for all players. Cost is $10; sign up by calling (828) 966-4262. Doris Braum will return to the pro shop part-time for her fifth year. We all love Doris and are so glad she’s back. Please welcome Pat Hutton as the Tennis Pro Shop Coordinator. Pat is an excellent player and has many years of experience. He will be arranging games for those of you need a match. Also helping this summer is tennis star Fernando Guillen, who played many exhibitions for us last year. Fernando will be helping with lessons, clinics, and playing exhibitions. Finally, our own Korey Lovett will be helping as well. For those of you who haven’t heard, Korey has accepted a full tennis scholarship to the University of South Carolina in 2014. Thank you to all in our Lake Toxaway family for your amazing love and support. See you on the courts! 4

CROQUET Welcome back to all CROQUETNUTS! I hope you have had a pleasant and relaxing winter and are ready for an event filled season. The winter here was somewhat cold and very wet, but the club has done another excellent job in maintaining our courts over the winter. This season will be another major growth year both for the Lake Toxaway Mallet Club and croquet in the western Carolina mountain community. We now have ten clubs in western North Carolina who either have existing clubs and courts or who have committed to developing them. Look what we CROQUETNUTS have helped inspire in our region!

Pinehurst this past month. This is important for several reasons: first, we are excited that George’s play was exceptional and second, he (and Jane) are developing their skills and knowledge as teachers for Association Croquet, a format that will become our standard for advanced play at Lake Toxaway. The style and rules are more fun, less complicated, and easier to learn and play than American Rules Croquet. You will hear a lot more about this as our current season develops. Congratulations and thanks to George! This season will again be filled with events for all you active croquet enthusiasts. Here are a few highlights for upcoming events in May and June: • May 13 – Wine & Wickets Kickoff Golf Croquet instruction begins at 3:00pm and play starts at 3:30pm. Snacks and water are available. Remember to bring your own adult choice of beverage. Who will be the first lucky 50/50 winner? Wine & Wickets is always followed by casual dining at the club; RSVP for dinner online at laketoxawaycc.com or call the club at (828) 966-4020.

Les Avera proudly displays his trophies from the Palm Beach Croquet Club Invitational.

The winter was active for many of our members. Linda and Kent Garner organized another successful off-season of Atlanta Croquet Play this year, with the group continuing to grow. Our own Les Avera made us all proud by winning his flight in the Palm Beach Croquet Club Invitational. Les only lost one game in the second flight of singles play. He added to his growing list of successes by coming in second in doubles play at the same tournament held this past January. Way to go Les! Our founding father, George Enochs, tied for first place in the first flight of the 2013 NC Open Association Croquet Tournament held at

CLUBHOUSE With the new season, we see friendly faces returning for duty, as well as some new ones. Joel Mathis returns this year as our Service Director, and he is eager to assume his new responsibilities. Jenn Owen will be back directing breakfast and lunch and Alex West returns to his station at The 19th Hole as our beverage manager. Our core servers from years’ past will be returning to give you their best: Kylie will serve the Lakeside Dining Room for her fourth season, along with Carol Anne, Allie, Shauna, Jordan, Brittany, Autumn, Denise, and Corey. Welcome back all and thank you. Other new staff in the food and beverage department include Chris Cooper, who will take the helm for fine dining at the Lakeside Dining Room. Chris comes to us with past experience at the Chevy Chase Country Club and the Congressional Country Club in Virginia. Our assistant bar manager will be Adam Walton, a recent hospitality graduate from the University of South Carolina. Alix Dixon has taken a job at Detroit Yacht Club in her home state of Michigan, but her position as event coordinator will be well-filled by Erin Schlegel, a graduate of Amherst College with a good foundation in events planning and catering, a great personality and energy to burn. A new twist for this season is that we will once again be hiring several international workers who have great credentials and a strong hospitality career start in their home countries. Rolly, Ar-Aim and Romar from the Philippines and Darius from Romania will be with us for six months and then continue their experience at fine country clubs in Florida for the winter season. Please be sure to give them a great Lake Toxaway welcome as you see them around the club. We have some great events coming up in May, beginning with our new Kentucky Derby party on May 4. Then join us for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12, when Chefs Mike, Greg, and Caleb will go all-out to honor mothers with a beautiful buffet. See more information on the F&B page or the club calendar, and be sure to make your reservations soon! 8

MEMBERSHIP Thank you to everyone who has asked about me since I underwent surgery to remove an acoustic neuroma in the auditory canal of my left ear. My surgeons are thrilled with my recovery and have been ultra-positive about everything. I’m progressing nicely at home, and pretty much feel back to normal as long as I don’t move too quickly. I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity and kindness from the members here at Lake Toxaway Country Club. I’m always telling people that what makes Lake Toxaway so special is the people here, and this experience has proven that to me. I’m hoping to be back the first week of May, so it won’t be long before I will see you at the club!

Patriot Weekend 2013 Sponsorship forms are available now from www.laketoxawaycc.com/ patriotweekend. All sponsorship donations go directly to the Folds of Honor Foundation to fund scholarships for family members of killed or wounded service members; all donations are 100% tax-deductible. Completed sponsor forms and payments should be returned to Alex Alexander at 226 Club Colony Lane, Lake Toxaway, NC 28747. Last year’s Saturday night dinner/dance was a big success, and we expect the same in 2013. Sponsorship donations guarantee table availability and determine priority seating for Saturday night, so be sure to submit your sponsorship forms soon! To make reservations for the dinner/dance prior to July 1, please contact Alex Alexander. He can assist in filling your table if you have fewer than 8 people in your group. Dinner/dance costs of $100++ per person will be billed by the club starting July 1.
