It pays to ‘Shop Lakewood’ for back-to-school needs!

While many of us are still “toes up” on the beach-at least in our minds-great deals are starting to show up for “back-to-school” sales. This is particularly good news for Lakewood shoppers. Lakewood is home to some of the nation’s most popular back-toschool retailers, including Walmart, Kohl’s, JC Penny, Macy’s, Target, Big 5, and by August 5, a Sports Authority superstore. Back-to-school purchases traditionally revolve around Lakewood Community News #24 Lakewood Center Mall Lakewood, CA 90712 (562) 531-9733

clothing, school supplies and sports equipment. Cost-conscious Lakewood moms and dads know that back-to-school shopping may be second only to the holiday season for pinching their pocketbooks. It’s a fact not lost on retailers. To earn those dollars, USA Today reports that back-to-school specials and “dollar days” begin showing up in mid-summer advertising nationwide. “Lakewood shoppers should consider some of the best back-to-

school values right here in their city. Forever 21, Nordstrom Rack, Best Buy, and Costco are only a few of the top discounters here in town,” says John Kelsall of the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce. “People need to know that ‘putting their money where their house is’ really matters.” Residents get benefits each time a purchase is made in a Lakewood store, restaurant, or gas station. It helps the Lakewood community because a portion of the sales tax comes back to fund improvements in their hometown. Sales taxes fund the largest portion of city services. That includes park programs, law enforcement and all the features that make for a good quality of life in Lakewood. Kelsall argues that shoppers have two important choices to make each time they shop. He notes the state of the U.S. economy is still hazy and shoppers must be cost-conscious and look out for their families. “They also need to be ‘location conscious.’ Every time a purchase is rung up in Lakewood, it helps this community.” “Lakewood Center and plenty of other shopping choices in neighborhood centers around town have been part of Lakewood’s formula for success since the city was founded in the 1950’s,” says Kelsall. “Keeping Lakewood retailers in mind during major shopping seasons really helps our town.”

Project Shepherd is collecting school supplies

Book bags/school supplies help needy local children.

Even as back-to-school advertisements crowd the newspapers, some Lakewood families will struggle to get their kids to school with the basics in hand. Project Shepherd is trying to help. From now through August 19, Lakewood’s Project Shepherd is collecting “Back-to-school backpacks” and school supplies for low-income families with school age children. All of Lakewood’s school districts will begin classes in late August and early September so the need is pressing. To meet the demand, new backpacks and school supplies appropriate for all ages will be accepted at Lakewood City

Hall during regular business hours. They can also be brought to the Burns Community Center at 5510 Clark Avenue from Monday through Friday between 7am and 7pm, and on Saturday from 7am until noon. “Lakewood is a very generous community and we are grateful for the donations we’ve received to date, but we still need more to be able to give one to every child in the program,” says Phyllis Clark, Community Services Coordinator at the Burns Community Center. The Project Shepherd yearround program has seen an increase in residents who need help with emergency food assistance this year. For more information about the program call 562-925-7512.
