There’s reason for optimism in Lakewood
By Mayor Joseph Esquivel
The year 2010 was an eventful one in Lakewood. It was a rough year economically. While experts determined that the economy technically rebounded this year, the recovery in jobs was spotty. Nationwide, the unemployment rate as of mid-December was 9.5%, with California’s rate at 12.4%. Lakewood families shared in that pain. In a recent public opinion survey, 38% of Lakewood residents reported that a member of their household had experienced unemployment over the past year. That hurts to hear, and I feel for those families and their loved ones. Fortunately for Lakewood city government, we’ve been able to balance our books in
this recession without cutting services to residents or laying off workers, many of whom live in Lakewood. I’m relieved that we haven’t added to the economic difficulties of our state. Our tradition of careful and frugal financial management has proven itself during this past year as other cities around us weathered the tough times with layoffs, furloughs and program cuts. A major development in Lakewood in 2010 was the implementation of our new recycling and trash collection system. EDCO trash trucks began emptying blue recycling carts and taking the mixed recyclables to a “materials recovery facility.” There, recyclables were pulled out and saved from going to landfills. Lakewood residents are responding well to the new system, with 88% of Lakewood residents giving it positive ratings in the recent opinion survey. I extend my thanks to Lakewood residents for cooperating with your city to make this new system work for everyone. Public safety in Lakewood saw improvements in 2010. Crime rates to date this year have declined overall by 13%, with

thefts from vehicles down 34%, and thefts of autos down 22%. The city’s traffic enforcement and roadside speed monitors saw real results with accidents dropping by over 7%. And while some nearby cities had to cut back on crossing guards, Lakewood’s 30 crossing guards and school safety program remained strong in the cause of protecting our city’s youngest residents. Business activity is showing signs of recovery in Lakewood. A new Nordstrom Rack opened in October and is doing very well. The popular Henry’s Market chain is continuing to build a new store set to open early next year at Carson St. and Woodruff Ave. And, WinCo Foods is beginning plans to open a large supermarket at South St. and Downey Ave. Shopping in Lakewood got better in 2010, with more commerce and more jobs coming in 2011. So, there was plenty of positive news in Lakewood in 2010. But I know we’ll all be hoping for better economic results nationwide in 2011 so that more people can regain jobs and we can really start putting this recession behind us. That will be one of my biggest New Year’s wishes.

The Tooth Truth
Question:
“A relative of mine is considering a career in dentistry. What is involved in becoming a dentist?”
Answer:
Being a dental professional can give you a lifetime reward in caring for people. From alleviating pain to changing smiles, the profession gives an amazing sense of gratification. Once you decide upon a career in dentistry you may wonder what education is required. The first educational hurdle after high school is to earn a bachelors degree, typically four years. After the bachelors degree one attends dental school, for four additional years, to earn a doctoral degree in dental science. An additional one to six years after dental school can be spent in training for one of the many dental specialties. Lakewood Dental Arts in coordination with Cal State Long Beach will be hosting students who are considering a dental career. The students will be observing all aspects of dentistry such as orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics and oral surgery. We will be answering questions the students may have regarding the educational process and the profession as well. If you or someone you know is considering a career in dentistry and has any questions, please feel free to contact our office.

Ring in some New Year’s financial resolutions Article provided by Marjorie Anderson, Financial Advisor, Edward Jones Investments, Lakewood
Now that 2011 is here, you may want to make some New Year’s resolutions. Planning to volunteer? Go to the gym more often? Learn a new language? All worthy ambitions, of course, but this year, why not add some financial resolutions as well? Which resolutions should you make? Here are a few ideas to consider: • Boost your retirement accounts. No matter how old you are in 2011, one thing is certain — you’re a year closer to retirement than you were in 2010. And that’s why you’ll want to increase your contributions to your retirement accounts. • Look for opportunities. With the uncertainties in the economy and the volatility of the financial markets, many people decide to head to the investment “sidelines” for a while. Yet, this environment may actually

“silver lining” in that many people, concerned about overspending, have shed some of their debt load. The less money you have to spend on your debts, the more you’ll have available to invest for your future, so do what you can to cut down on what you owe. • Maintain adequate cash levels. As an investor, you’ve got at least two good reasons for maintaining enough cash in your portfolio. First, having adequate cash available means you’ll be ready to act quickly to take advantage of good investment opportunities. And second, by having a cash cushion, you won’t be forced to liquidate long-term investments to pay for short-term needs such as a major car repair, a new furnace, a big doctor’s bill, and so on. By following these suggestions, you can position yourself to make progress toward your longterm goals in 2011.

be a good one for investors with patience, discipline and the ability to look beyond yesterday’s headlines. For one thing, many quality securities are now good values. Also, we’re still seeing low inflation and low interest rates. • Don’t over-react to market swings. Over the past few years, we’ve seen plenty of sudden, sharp swings in the financial markets, and you’re likely going to see more of them in 2011. Don’t over-react to either the “ups” or the “downs” of the market. • Rebalance when necessary. At least once a year, review and rebalance your portfolio, as necessary, to make sure it still reflects your goals, risk tolerance and family situation, all of which can change over time. • Reduce your debts. While the sluggish economy of the past couple of years has obviously been a cause of concern for everyone, we have seen one

Ask the Doctor
Lakewood Commissioner Jeff Wood Kicks-off City Council Campaign
What is a hip replacement surgery? Hip replacement, also called arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged hip with a prosthesis (an artificial joint). This surgery may be considered following a hip fracture (breaking of the bone) or for someone who has severe arthritis. Various types of arthritis may affect the hip joint. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that affects mostly middle-aged and older adults, may cause the breakdown of joint cartilage and adjacent bone in the hips. Rheumatoid arthritis, which causes inflammation of the synovial membrane and results in excessive synovial fluid, may lead to pain and stiffness. Traumatic arthritis, arthritis due to injury, may cause damage to the articular cartilage of the hip. The goal of hip replacement surgery is to replace the parts of the hip joint that have been damaged and to relieve hip pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments. What happens if I elect not to get the surgery? Hip replacement surgery is a treatment for pain and disability in the hip. The most common condition that results in the need for hip replacement surgery is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is characterized by the loss of joint cartilage in the hip. Damage to the cartilage and bones limits movement and may cause pain. Persons with severe degenerative joint disease may be unable to do normal activities that involve bending at the hip, such as walking or sitting, because they are painful. Other forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and arthritis that results from a hip injury, can also lead to degeneration of the hip joint. Also, hip replacement is one method of treating a hip fracture. A fracture is a traumatic event that may result from a fall. Pain from a fracture is severe and walking or even moving the leg is difficult. What are the risks of the Procedure? As with any surgical procedure, complications can occur. Some possible complications may include, but are not limited to, the following: • bleeding • infection • blood clots in the legs or lungs • dislocation • need for revision or additional hip surgery • nerve injury resulting in weakness or numbness After the Procedure In the hospital: After the surgery you will be taken to the recovery room for observation. Once your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing are stable and you are alert, you will be taken to your hospital room. Hip replacement surgery usually requires an in-hospital stay of several days.
LCN January (by Jodee).indd 7
What can I expect during the recovery time? It is important to begin moving the new joint after surgery. A physical therapist will meet with you soon after your surgery and plan an exercise program for you. Your pain will be controlled with medication so that you can participate in the exercise. You will be given an exercise plan to follow both in the hospital and after discharge. You will be discharged home or to a rehabilitation center. In either case, your physician will arrange for continuation of physical therapy until you regain muscle strength and good range of motion. Jeff’s goals include strengthening the existing business community and supporting new business development in Lakewood, as well as continuing the recreation, community and senior adult services for Lakewood residents. Jeff currently serves as Deputy Regional Administrator with the California Emergency Management Agency. His professional experience combined with his community involvement shows he is ready to provide responsive leadership to the Lakewood community. Security Advisory Council and past service as a member of Lakewood Station’s Volunteer on Patrol Program, where he logged over 500 volunteer hours. In announcing his endorsement of Jeff Wood, Mayor Joe Esquivel stated, “It is time for Lakewood residents to vote for a new representative on the city council. Jeff Wood is my choice. Jeff won’t just talk about the challenges facing Lakewood, but take steps to solve those problems in ways that will benefit us all. Jeff has the intelligence, the good sense and the respect of the community to provide the leadership we need.” For additional information on Jeff’s campaign or to volunteer, visit www.electJeffWood.com.

There are numerous local shelters, non-profit organizations, repair shops, thrift stores, consignment and second-hand stores that may be willing to take unwanted household items, such as furniture, appliances, linens, clothing, decorative items and equipment. Keep this in mind if your home becomes awash with clutter. This is a convenient way to dispose of unwanted bulky items without adding to the city’s refuse total. If donating an item won’t work, Lakewood residents are always welcome to call the city’s trash collection contractor at 562-531-3054 for Dial-A-Dump service prior to 3:30pm, one day in advance of your regular trash collection day. Dial-A-Dump should be used for large items that can’t be accommodated using your regular trash cart. E-waste should not be put in your regular trash. It can be dealt with through Dial-A-Dump or the many regional hazardous and e-waste collection events. See www.lakewoodcity.org/ specialtrash for more information. Free emergency response team training
Lakewood resident’s receive CERT disaster response training.
Over three Saturdays in January, Lakewood residents have a chance to train with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program at the Weingart Senior Center. Surviving a disaster and being able to help the community during its aftermath is what the 21 hours of “CERT” is all about. The CERT program provides expert instruction and hands-on training. It is taught by FEMA certified instructors in conjunction with Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Department personnel. It educates residents about disaster preparedness and disaster response skills for dealing with serious crisis situations. Classes include lecture and handson exercises. Topics include light search and rescue, triage, fire safety, team organization, disaster medical operations and orientation about working with public safety personnel during a major crisis. The program is part of the Lakewood’s “Survive for 7” efforts at www.lakewoodcity.org/7days. Their goal is to help residents become more self-reliant and better prepared for the aftermath of a serious emergency like a major earthquake. Trained CERT members will be much better prepared to assist their family members and neighborhoods following an event when professional first-responders are not immediately available to help. Training outline: • Disaster Preparedness • Disaster Fire Suppression • Disaster Media Operation I • Disaster Medical Operations II • Light Search And Rescue Operations • Disaster Psychology And Organization • Terrorism • Course Review and Simulation During each session participants are required to wear closed toed shoes and long pants (for safety purposes). The course will be held on three consecutive Saturdays (January 15, 22 and 29) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You must attend all three sessions to receive your CERT certification. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Pre-registration and a $10 fee for classroom materials and handouts are required. Registration may be done online using course number 24208. Call Karen Plantz with the City of Lakewood at 562-8669771, extension 2404 for additional information.

Low fat? Low carb? That is the question! by Dr. Larry Olmo, D.C.
Eating fat is bad. No‌ wait‌it’s carbohydrates that are evil. One expert says one thing and then, another Doctor says something else. Back and forth‌back and forth. Maybe that new infomercial selling the latest miracle weight loss product is the way to go? Who knows? In the meantime, you’re confused and not losing any weight. Well, get ready for some possible answers‌ and a few more questions. The June 19th, 2010 edition of The Endocrine Society
reports, “Obese women with insulin resistance lose more weight after three months on a lower-carbohydrate diet than on a traditional low-fat diet with the same number of calories... Since the women in this study were all insulin resistant – you might be wondering, “What is insulin resistance? Insulin resistance is a condition where the body produces insulin but does not use it properly. In other words, even though the pancreas secretes insulin, it is not effective in getting the glucose from the blood into the cells. More insulin is needed so the pancreas works harder and secretes more. Eventually, the pancreas cannot keep up with the increased demand and glucose builds up in the

blood. This is the beginning of diabetes. There seem to be several contributing factors to becoming insulin resistant. One of those factors may be genetic. But, genes aren’t everything. Lifestyle can have a major impact on your health and there are a growing number of studies showing that exercise, weight loss and proper diet can reverse many cases of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes. Research may not have all the answers yet, but to our knowledge, there is definitely no study that says sitting on the couch eating candy bars and ice cream is good for your health. Dr. Larry Omo, D.C. is a doctor of chiropractic specializing in spinal health care, disc rehabilitation, exercise and nutrition for over 28 years in Lakewood. His office is located at 5220 Clark Ave. #210 and he can be reached at 562-8670993.

Grants and nointerest loans are available from the city for $3,000 to $18,000 to repaint exteriors, repair windows, doors, roofs, and retrofit interiors. The programs use restricted housing funds pursuant to federal and state rules and can only be made available to low and moderate income families. Household income limits range from $46,400 for a oneperson household to $76,850 for a family of six. The Single Family Residential Rehabilitation Loan Program helps homeowners afford bigger ticket projects like the replacement of a roof or replacing old windows and sliding glass doors with dual-pane, energy efficient windows. Politician in Action
A US Senator was once asked about his attitude toward whisky. 'If you mean the demon drink that poisons the mind, pollutes the body, desecrates family life, and inflames sinners, then I'm against it. But if you mean the elixir of a New Year toast, the shield against winter chill, the taxable potion that puts needed funds into public coffers to comfort little crippled children, then I'm for it. This is my position, and I will not compromise.'
