Project Describtion The Danteum was an unbuilt project designed by Italian architect Giuseppe Terragni in 1932. The project would aim to exemplify the values of a new facist nationalist driven italian goverment. Terragni, being a admirer of Dante, based the concept of the Danteum in his interpretation of the novel “Dante’s Divine Comedy”. The geometries compromised in the project derived directly from the golden section, each room you enter has it’s own atmosphere and geometrical rules to set up proporcional and distributional systems. The promanade is composed of two main acces points, which provide two unique transitional progressions through the project. One directs you directly into the main courtyard, accesing the ground floor level into the office area which then leads to the inferno room, the library, the purgatory and finally heaven which is the highest point in the project. The second access starts with a main staircase that leads directly to the heaven room, thus inverting the transitional experience, decesding from heaven in to hell. The tectonical qualities of the project are also based on the golden ratio, meaning that there is geometries within each geometry. Each particular room is a layer of the next bigger room, in relationship to the hollistic geometry of the building itself. This dynamic gives play to an architecture that is open, yet secluded, visually public, but personal in a haptic manner. The space is not phenomenolagically activated until the user enters each space, making this a project a poetic and romantic materialization of a piece of literature.

Project Description The project is situated between a historical building and a growing suburb. The Cube is a 35 squared meter volum, that is sustained by three large concrete shafts, which allocate fire staircases and elevators, and a reinforced perforaded concrete exterior facades. The placement of the windows are based on sun orientation, views, and program allocated in every floor of the building. The simplicity of the project emphazises the interaction of squared geometries, in plan, elevation, and section. The windows bring in the exterior during the day but mirror the site from the outside, at night the windows reflect from the inside, amplifying the sensation of depth in the building, while from the exterior, the windows become completelly transparent, exposing the activity inside the project. Each floor allocates a specific set of programmatic requirements such as gallery space, auditorium, classrooms, studios, lounge, offices, and a skygarden. “We have made many big openings in the facades to create different daylight situations inside the building. The position of the windows are defined by the interior programs. By varying the ceiling heights each floor has a very different atmosphere. - SANAA
