Latino ‘Dodge the Arrow’ promotes heritage literacy with fun and games honored at LMU Latino Heritage Month offers a variety of events to celebrate Hispanic cultures on campus. Amanda Lopez Asst. News Editor @AmandaLo_

National Hispanic Heritage Month, also known as Latino Heritage Month, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, celebrates Hispanic cultures and Latinos’ contributions to American society. LMU will take part in the festivities as various departments have scheduled 11 events throughout the month. This year, Chicano Latino Student Services (CLSS) looked to different departments around campus to provide a wide range of quality events. LMU began its own celebrations of Latino Heritage Month with the “Arte Sin Fronteras: Exhibition” art gallery, which lasted from Sept. 4 to Sept. 19. Latino Heritage Month developed out of Hispanic Heritage Week, which was created by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. President Ronald Regan decided to extend the week into a month, signing it into law in 1988. It was decided that Latino Heritage Month would begin on September 15, as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica all celebrate their independence days on the 15th while Mexico and Chile celebrate theirs on the 16th. Film Outside the Frame is an annual event organized by STFV to showcase the top student films of the year. This year’s event was on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Paramount Pictures Studios. Much like the Academy Awards, Film Outside the Frame hands out awards for different categories in film. For more information, see Page 7.

This semester the Residence Housing Association (RHA) aims to rework its fall training day as it moves to rebrand the organization. The event, which takes place on Oct. 5, typically aims to train the newly-elected building councils in each hall. This year, however, the day stands for much more: a step in the right direction on RHA’s path to gain greater recognition. “This year, we are really working to rebrand ourselves with new and improved technology, paperless ticket sales, new training techniques and an entirely new attitude,” said RHA Vice President of Marketing and sophomore marketing major Taylor Yada. The goal of RHA is to make on-campus living an enjoyable experience and to represent students’ needs. “We want students to know who we are, what we do and that we are present for them,”

RHA Vice President of Development and sophomore marketing major Brielle CruzVega said. “RHA represents all students living on campus, and we want to make this a more positive environment for students and make ourselves known and present on campus.” As a whole, the organization is using this and other new implementations as methods of rebranding its name and role at LMU. “The goal is to create community, build student leaders and expand who we are as an organization and take the RHA to a whole new level. We are going off the grid and throwing away all previous guidelines and starting fresh,” Cruz-Vega said. Freshman RHA President of Del Rey North and English major Katie Schembri also feels that the training day is necessary to create a bond that will help the organization in its pursuit of a new image. “I think [the day will] be a great way for not only each building council to get to know each other, but also to get to know the other buildings,” Schembri said. “Sometimes we are so exclusive about what’s going on around us, we don’t see what might be happening in other buildings. It’s a really great way to build community.” The first step in accomplishing this is with See RHA | Page 3
