BEST SANDWICH SHOP Mendocino Farms
On Abbot Kinney sits one of the more interesting places to get ice cream in Los Angeles: Salt & Straw. The shop, with locations in Portland and coming soon to San Francisco, prides itself on creating new and innovative ice cream flavors. From Happy Birthday Elvis! — which utilizes bacon in its recipe — to Candied Clementine Almond Cake, Salt & Straw manages to satisfy even the most unexpected tastes. The employees know this, so they give each customer the chance to sample as many flavors as they’d like before ordering. Each flavor is unique in its own way, and a trip to this special ice cream shop should be a priority for all Angelenos. - J.R. Bellavia, Opinion Intern
At the Westfield Culver City mall, there is a myriad of food options, from fast-food places like Chipotle to sit-down restaurants like BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse. But if you’re shopping till you drop and simultaneously craving top-notch BBQ, look no further than Lucille’s Smokehouse. The waiters always serve with a smile, and you’re guaranteed to be full by the time you walk out. Some of the highlights of their menu include the St. Louis spare ribs, Texas-style beef brisket and Southern fried chicken. If you’re over 21, make sure to accompany your BBQ with some beer or cocktails during their Happy Hour every night from 9 p.m. till closing. - Matt Gaydos, Opinion Editor
There’s nothing better than ditching the Lair Marketplace and getting a meal off campus. We all get tired of dorm food after a while, but for many college students, eating off campus is a constant battle between finding something good that won’t simultaneously empty your wallet. Mendocino Farms hits that balance perfectly. With favorites like the ‘Not So Fried Chicken Sandwich,’ colorful salads and weekly soup and side specials, Mendocino Farms offers fresh, delicious food that’s reasonably priced and — to top it all off — it is a ridiculously short drive from campus. Seriously, it takes me longer to walk to U-Hall. - Samantha Davis, Asst. Opinion Editor

Best Date Spot:
Venice Beach
There’s no doubt that here at LMU we are truly lucky to have a campus in one of the best locations in the Los Angeles area. Not only are Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Culver City all relatively short drives away, but we are surrounded by quality beaches. If you’re looking for fun date spots but are on a tight budget like a lot of college students tend to be, it’s hard to beat L.A.’s beaches as a cheap option to take that special someone. It doesn’t cost a dime to take your significant other to see the spectacle that is L.A.’s pollution-enhanced sunset reflect off the Pacific Ocean. Not to mention that most of the beaches surrounding LMU’s campus are paired up with cool places to explore, shop and eat at. Manhattan Beach has boutique clothing stories, surf shops and cozy places to eat like the Rockefeller — check out their truffle mac and cheese. Even if you’re a freshman from out of state, there’s a great chance that you’ve still heard of Venice Beach and all it has to offer.
Tired of tanning with your sweetheart? Venice’s best place to shop — Abbot Kinney Boulevard— is a short Uber ride away. Good restaurants full of happy beach-goers fill restaurants like the Venice Whaler — which also has a takeout stand if you don’t feel like waiting for a table. The closest beach to LMU is Dockweiler. While it’s a relatively plain beach, it’s the perfect place to get a group together, get a bonfire going and bust out a guitar. Hermosa Beach and Redondo are also great options if you’re willing to make the effort to go down further south. Further north, Santa Monica’s iconic beach has an amusement park on its pier — a great date spot — and is walking distance from shopping at Third Street Promenade. This is the opinion of Matt Gaydos, a sophomore communication studies major from Palos Verdes, California. Tweet comments to @LALoyolan, or email mgaydos@theloyolan.com.

HOLLYWOOD BOWL

BEST CONCERT VENUE
O
pen for just under 100 years, the famous Hollywood Bowl is a favorite Los Angeles venue for outdoor concerts. Its fame is well deserved, and this year the Hollywood Bowl was voted by LMU students as the Best Concert Venue. The amphitheater has been a host to many legendary musicians such as The Who, Elton John, The Doors and The Beatles. I’ve personally visited the Hollywood Bowl to see Mötley Crüe, Alice Cooper, a Dreamworks orchestra and LCD Soundsystem. In fact, the LCD Soundsystem concert was the first live show I had ever seen, and it is still one of my best experiences. It was a chilly night in the ninth grade when I walked up the sloped entrance to the arena with my friend Imanya. We made our way to our seats toward the back of the amphitheater. We soon met up with another friend of ours, Julian, who gave up his seats at the front of the stadium to come sit with us. Thinking back, I appreciate that much more now than I did at the time. I feel like it’s so rare to see people willing to make sacrifices in order to spend time with their friends — friends who know that it is good company which makes a good time rather than preferred seating. Exploring the variety of vendors, we discovered a shop with amazing pulled pork sandwiches and bought some t-shirts. Both were pretty basic things to do at a concert, but it was my first and is still an incredibly nostalgic memory for me. The honestly really ugly yellow shirt that I probably wore on only two separate occasions after that night is still in a box somewhere in my garage.
Watching a band perform at the Hollywood Bowl is a really unique experience. The coliseum setting is kind of exhilarating and rustic, and it’s incredibly common to see couples enjoying wine and cheese in the open air venue and feeling the fresh breeze while listening to live music under the stars.
OPEN FOR JUST UNDER 100 YEARS
I would honestly say that the LCD Soundsystem concert that I went to was what really made me start to love music on my own. Previously, I only ever really listened to The Beatles and Muse because that’s what my family listened to, and I had never explored my own tastes. So when my friend Imanya invited me to the concert, I said yes before ever having listened to the band. I just wanted to have the experience and didn’t really care who was playing at the show. But I definitely grew to love the band in the weeks leading up to the show. Being at that concert was the first time that I really felt music. The sounds resonated up the stone steps of the amphitheater and through me. Jumping up and down with my friends beside me, seeing the rest of the occupants of the stadium on their feet, I saw the actual effect that music can have on people. To be honest, the opening act almost turned me off of the entire experience, but I still found some amusement at Sleigh Bells’ performance. The
shrieking and hair-flipping wasn’t exactly in the same stylistic vein as LCD Soundsystem, so I was surprised to say the least. I did, however, enjoy the other opening band Hot Chip, which had a fun techno beat and unique costumes. The best part of the evening took place later on though, during LCD Soundsystem’s set. After hearing some of their best songs like “All
“Being at that concert was the first time that I really felt music.” My Friends” and “Daft Punk is Playing at My House,” they played one of my favorites, “Someone Great.” The song is already incredibly touching when listening to the recorded version, but in the context of this amphitheater, the experience was pure magic. At one point in the song, the lyrics sound, “I’m stunned, it’s not raining.” This was made special by the fact that right at that point in the song, it started to rain. Being an outdoor venue, everyone in the audience was getting soaked while laughing at the irony of the weather. Everyone in the stadium felt connected, and that’s something unique to the Hollywood Bowl. A beautiful venue to be sure, but beyond that, it is a wonderful experience to share with good friends, and is well deserving of the title of 2016’s Best Concert Venue. The Hollywood Bowl was the perfect setting for this experience, and I don’t think the concert could have been better at any other venue. This is the opinion of Tor Marom, a senior english major from Calabasas, California. Email comments to tmarom@theloyolan.com.

The time has come for the Loyolan to release the results of its annual Best Of issue to show students on campus which places on and off campus deserve an extra look or two. We at the Bluff know that some very important categories were passed over, so don’t worry your little college heads. Here are the winners of the lesser-appreciated but still essential categories of the Bluff Best Of:
Whether you’ve been having a bad day or just need a reminder that someone’s having as much trouble with life as you, we at the Bluff know that sometimes you just need to watch people wipe out on their skateboards or other transportation devices — we don’t discriminate. Though it was a close race, the winner in this category is the street-to-sidewalk transfer in front of Jamba Juice. Not only do unsuspecting, innocent freshmen often misjudge the gap, but the curb there makes it the sneakiest of common wipe-out areas. An added bonus is the easy visibility and convenience of being able to casually sip your fresh Jamba smoothie while internally delighting in the demise of another person’s dignity before going on with your day. -Sami Leung, Bluff Editor
Those of you who think having a meltdown in your room is the way to go have been going about it all wrong. The best place by far is LMU’s trusty William H. Hannon Library. You’re surrounded by constant reminders of your stress, whether it’s the imposing black, empty screens of the large Apple moniters that litter the library or the stacks of books that you should probably be reading. Additionally, you are close to students who are probably feeling the same level of stress and are about as close — if not closer — to a meltdown than you, so you know you’re not alone. Sharing in the stressful college experience with others can be a balm to your hurting soul. However, we should mention that if you decide to cope on the louder side — be it wailing, screaming or even a subdued sob or two — the librarians won’t have pity on you and might make you leave. -Sami Leung, Bluff Editor
