BCLA seeks dean, students uninvolved Only four students showed up to Monday’s open student forum to meet dean finalist. Julia Sacco

Asst. News Editor @_juliasacco_

As the search for the next BCLA dean continues, both student and faculty/ staff forums offered an opportunity for the LMU community to pose questions for the candidates being considered for the position and give their thoughtful feedback on the finalists. The first of the student open forums was held on Monday, March 17, but only four students attended, while the faculty and staff forum later that day was almost filled. The search for a new dean began with 85 applications for the position and has recently been narrowed down to the final two candidates. The two candidates are Robbin D. Crabtree from Fairfield

University and Ramón A. Gutiérrez from the University of Chicago. Gutiérrez was present at the first of the two forums, and Crabtree is scheduled to attend the second on Thursday, March 20. In an email sent to all BCLA students regarding the forum, the importance of students’ engagement in the process and attendance was stressed. “A very important part of that process is the open forum for BCLA students to meet the candidates and ask questions,” said current BCLA dean Shane P. Martin in an email to the students. Not only did the students receive an email with the information regarding the open forum, but also another with further candidate materials and information for their own purposes. “Past searches usually had an average of 10 students attending, including both graduate and undergraduates,” Martin said. It is still unclear why this was the case because the forum was scheduled from 5-6 See BCLA | Page 2

San Diego-based rock band Pepper will headline SpringFest in Sunken Garden this Sunday, according to statements released on ASLMU’s Facebook page Monday through Wednesday nights and confirmed by ASLMU Director of Performance Events and sophomore finance major Elise Belcher. The event will feature two additional professional bands: indie rock duo Tanlines and indie pop band Smallpools. The opening act, which is scheduled to start playing Sunday afternoon at 3:30, will be Mane Entertainment’s Battle of the Beats winner, junior mathematics major Alex Marzona and his band. Belcher explained that three professional bands were selected this year rather than two in an effort to make SpringFest “feel more like a music festival.” Sophomore music major Matilda Rudolph is excited about the shift to more alternative bands at SpringFest after last year’s hip hop performance by Chidera Anamege of Chiddy Bang. “I think it’s good that ASLMU is changing it up a little bit to appeal to different groups on campus,” Rudolph said. “I’m really excited about Smallpools because I think they’ll bring a really good energy to SpringFest.” See SpringFest | Page 2
