ARTISTIC REPORT “La Mama matters enormously in the theatre ecology for its encouragement of a wide range of artists, both new and established, and continues to produce significant work. And it does it pretty much on the smell of an oily rag.” Alison Croggon - Behind the Critical Curtain - 26 July 2012 In 2012, La Mama has continued to offer considerable support to artists and to deliver a dynamic and vibrant artistic program including 43 new productions across our two Carlton venues. Of these, 33 have been new Australian works (including the acclaimed Robots Vs Art by Travis Cotton and Caroline Leeʼs adaptation of her novel, Stripped), 7 extant Australian works, a new Singaporean play (Cogito by Huzir Sulaiman), an adapted classic work (Quartet by Müller) and David Mametʼs The Woods. We have taken part in the Midsumma Festival with 3 new productions (The Pineapple Sorrows, Landscape Dreaming and Metamorphosis) and in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (Dingoʼs Baby, Linguistic Loonacy and The Cautionary Tale of Barry von Peabody). In the La Mama Garden program, we have had 12 rehearsed playreadings in 2012. Of these readings, Death Of A Comedian written by local Fred Rowan went on to a full production in December and Tales of a City by the Sea, by Palestinian playwright Samah Sabawi, has been programmed for 2013. Also part of our program of works in development, the 2012 Explorations Season was curated by Pippa Bainbridge and a record 28 productions were given a three night season. Of these, so far 5 have been programmed in 2013 and a further 5 programmed in 2014. One of the works premiering in our main season at La Mama Theatre this year, The Shrink and Swell of Knots, illustrates the full gamut of the development opportunities we provide, from a three night Exploration in 2010, to a full season in 2012, to touring as part of our mobile program in 2012 and into 2013 The La Mama Learning program, coordinated by Maureen Hartley, included a season of the multi-faceted production Squaring The Wheel for senior primary and junior secondary school audiences. Rosemary Johnsʼ Black Box 149, which premiered at La Mama Theatre in 2011 was selected for the VCE syllabus. Sections of the work were also presented at the 2012 International Women Playwrightsʼ Conference in Stockholm. Both Rosemary Johns and Artistic Director, Liz Jones, were involved in the presentation. Our 2010 production of Bethany Simonsʼ The Weather and Your Health, which toured regionally in 2011, was also selected for the VCE syllabus and presented at La Mama Theatre in May. In 2011 Barry Dickins was artist-in-residence at Sydney Road Community School in Brunswick, leading writing workshops as part of the Extended School Residencies Program, funded by Arts Victoria. This project was concluded in 2012 with the enthusiastically attended launch of student Dylan Buoyʼs anthology of poems. Our La Mama for Kids program, now curated by Ella Holmes, continues to thrive with 23 performances of 9 different shows in 2012, including school holiday programs coinciding with the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Workshops as part of the La Mama Community program continued this year through our ongoing relationships with AMES (Adult Migrant Education Services working with recently arrived refugees), the Centre for Multicultural Youth and with Carlton Primary School. Our Community Producer, Caitlin Dullard, was on the Carlton Harmony Day organising committee and is also an active member of CLAN (Carlton Local Agencies Network), working with residents in the Carlton High Rise Commission Flats.

The verbatim theatre production, Coranderrk: We Will Show The Country, which was developed at La Mama in collaboration with Ilbijerri Theatre Company over the past three years, had two very exciting presentations in 2012. The first took place at BMW Edge in February as part of the Melbourne Indigenous Theatre Festival, while the second formed part of the NAIDOC Week celebration at the Sydney Opera House in June. The production will also be included in Belvoir Theatreʼs 2013 season. The production forms part of the University of Melbourneʼs Minutes of Evidence Project, supported by the Australian Research Commission. Liz Jones and Caitlin Dullard continue to work as Partner Investigators on the project. La Mama has also continued to develop relationships across the Victorian Touring Network, working with Regional Arts Victoria, the Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centres as well as regional and metropolitan venues in order to develop our La Mama Mobile program. We received a project grant of $10k from Arts Victoria to assist with the delivery of the program this year, allowing for extensive regional and outer suburban tours of Helen Lucas' Sarajevo Suite, Donna Jackson's The Baby Show and Ben Grant's The Shrink and Swell of Knots. Both La Mama Poetica and La Mama Musica continue as regular and vital aspects of our artistic program and in 2012 are joined by our new program, La Mama Aesoterica (explorations in hybrid, electronic and new media performance works). In 2012 we also presented a number of one-off events including a beautiful Iranian classical dance/musical work, The Tale of Siyavesh, at both The State Library of Victoria and then at La Mama as part of The Love and Devotion Persian Cultural Festival. We congratulated Georgina Capper, Nikki Shiels, Declan Greene, MKA and The Unspoken Word is Joe, Chloe Greaves and The Pineapple Sorrows for their 2012 Green Room Awards nominations and 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival Awards winners, Sofia Chapman and Four Accordionists of the Apocalypse, Nicola Gunn and Hello My Name Is, Zoey Dawson and The Unspoken Word is “Joe”, and The Unstoppable Unsung Story of Shaky M. On reflection, 2012 at La Mama was a year of deepening our connection to individual works, as we enjoyed return seasons of successful productions as part of our education and touring programs. It also held much promise and future thinking, with a burgeoning development season offering a glimpse at an artistically exciting few years ahead! “Robot vs Art, NOA and The Unspoken Word is Joe were all the sort of vivid and viable new Australian theatre that might not see the light of day without La Mama.” th Cameron Woodhead, The Age 30 December 2012

“Before walking through La Mama’s doors, you are warned you are stepping into a mobile experience where narrative continuity is overrated. Have your eyes wide open and bodies ready for motion. Stretch your mind, lose your time! The Well, daringly invites you to be involved in the end of the world.” - Sandra Lee on The Well, Syn FM

MARKETING REPORT La Mama continues to stay true to its original vision of 1967, producing and presenting a growing number of new Australian works and supporting a multiplicity of artists, remaining relevant to a broad ranging and diverse audience. In 2012, the challenges of marketing La Mama include balancing competing brand attributes, of being seen as an established and iconic institution embedded in Australian cultural history, as well as being recognised as essential to contemporary theatre artists and audiences, both now and in the future. For artists, La Mama’s niche position remains centered around the unique low financial risk framework that offers opportunities to present new work in a supported context, with significant assistance in publicising and promoting productions. For audiences, La Mama continues to provide access to innovative, engaging theatre works in intimate and welcoming spaces. Attendance at La Mama productions continued strongly in 2012, averaging 70% across all programs with a total of 31,240 people engaged as audiences and workshop participants. As part of a strategy to achieve these goals, this year saw La Mama consolidate online communications, ensuring that the transition to digital delivery would not compromise the grass roots La Mama brand, which places great importance on core values of accessibility and inclusion. This has primarily been achieved by fostering stronger relationships through a communications plan focused on increasing contact with our artists and audiences online. The La Mama website continued to be at the centre of our marketing efforts, connecting audiences with “Whatʼs On” information, additional content such a video, images and audio to support the works. Bookings generated through the site continue to grow and the majority of La Mama’s audience now book through the website. In 2012, traffic reached 80,000 website visits, of which 56% of visitors to the site are new, both a significant increase to the corresponding figures from 2011. Weekly electronic direct mail campaigns continued to be an effective way to reach our 3,500 subscribers, complementing our daily communication with over 5000 followers on Facebook and Twitter. Most notably, 2012 saw artists starting to generate their own content, which was distributed through La Mamaʼs social media platforms. This was particularly successful for video content, with the La Mama Vimeo Channel generating more than 5,000 full views over the course of the year. In keeping with our sustainability objectives, 2012 also saw the move to online delivery of media releases and invitations, opting for a graphic format for all communication. This has been met positively by our stakeholders and has simplified the internal process for monitoring the response to each production. We have continued to produce a high quality season brochure that is distributed widely and celebrated at our quarterly season launches. Despite decreases in the coverage of theatre in Melbourne’s major dailies, La Mama has continued to have a strong media presence and we have generated a significant number of reviews for all productions in print, online publications and on radio. We have built relationships with a number of emerging online review channels and continue to engage advocates who engage in critical discourse online. We look forward to continuing to market La Mama as a hub of independent theatre in Australia with exciting plans for a new website for audiences and a social networking service for artists to be launched in 2013.

MANAGEMENT REPORT In 2012, changes occurred in La Mamaʼs Committee of Management as well as internal staff. We bid farewell to our beloved Chair, Catherine Hill, and treasured members, Emily Harms and Tim Stitz. We welcomed Kerry Noonan and Adam Cass as new ordinary members and Sue Broadway as the new Chair. Ellen Rijs was appointed to the new position of Administration Coordinator and producers were employed on a contract basis to deliver and develop the La Mama Learning, La Mama Community and La Mama Mobile programs, completing the transition to a new staff structure. This current structure address the succession of the organisation, providing opportunities for development and employing vibrant, young creative staff under the mentorship of Artistic Director, Liz Jones. In 2012, La Mama submitted a successful application to the Australia Council, receiving funding for the next three years as a Key Organisation. We received notification of cuts in State Government arts funding that would affect La Mama over the next few years. Staff took part in consultations as part of Arts Victoria’s multi-year organisations funding program review, and were successful in an expression of interest to apply to the Established Category of the new Organisations Investment Program in 2013. La Mama continued to be funded by our local government, the City of Melbourne in 2012. A touring grant from Arts Victoria helped us to generate a successful touring program, which we hope will continue into the future. After many years of successfully partnering with VicHealth, La Mama did not receive funding triennial funding for our Community Program in the 2012 - 2014 triennium. Despite this, we were able to generate project income to deliver workshops and provide engagement opportunities for marginalised groups this year, however the program will need additional support to continue. Over the past few years, La Mama supported other local organisations in lobbying state and local government to secure the Kathleen Syme Centre for community use. The City of Melbourne was able to purchase the building on Faraday Street in Carlton in 2012 and La Mama artists have benefitted from the additional rehearsal space it provides. La Mama will take part in the design consultation for the centre and it is hoped that the development will further enhance the vibrancy of Faraday Street as a cultural precinct. The next stage in the ongoing improvement of the amenities at La Mama is the proposed upgrade of La Mama’s outdoor box office and bar. 2012 saw the development of design concepts which address the current and future needs of the space with a view to undertake the renovations over the next triennium. Key concepts that will influence the design include the need to provide additional shelter for audience while maintaining a minimal structure in an environment that remains personal and welcoming. And finally, we ended 2012 with the exciting news that the Pratt Foundation were once again our saviours, generously donating the funds for a much needed upgrade in resources at the La Mama Courthouse. The support from the Foundation will allow for a modular seating bank and new chairs to be installed at the venue, improving the comfort and safety as well as the flexibility of the space. We are truly grateful for this ongoing relationship and looking forward to launching the new seating bank in 2013.

FINANCIAL REPORT Presented below as part of the Financial Report is the audited statement of the consolidated entities; La Mama Inc and La Mama Trust. In 2012, operational funding income was higher than previous years with increases in funding from the City of Melbourne (up to $65,000 per annum from $40,000 in the previous triennium) and CPI increases on funding from the Australia Council and Arts Victoria. Previously reported as funding income, funding from VicHealth for our Community Program was discontinued in the second half for this year resulting in an overall decrease. Non-funding income from box office (80% of which is paid directly to artists) as well as publication and bar sales is increasing relative to our growing audience numbers. Secondary programs including La Mama Community ($9,694), La Mama Moblie ($73,010) and La Mama Learning ($6,467) were self-funding in 2012 with income expended on specific projects. A significant contribution from the Pratt Foundation ($50,000) will be used for the upgrade of facilities at the La Mama Courthouse in 2013. Increasing expenses relating to production ($305,349 up from $259,827 in 2011) and administration ($79,509 up from $65,973 in 2011) are due to the continuing growth in the number of productions and level of support given to artists each year. A substantial reduction in marketing expenses ($33,579 down from $52,993 in 2011) is a result of the shift away from advertising and hardcopy promotion to online content and distribution. Resulting from the restructure, expenses incurred for redundancies in 2011 have been taken up in 2012, resulting in a net deficit of $47,389 for the year. This one-off anticipated deficit has been provided for and drawn from the capital reserves of the La Mama Trust and does not affect the operational budget of the Incorporated Association. As of December 2012, the consolidated equity/retained surplus of the organisation is $2,211,764. La Mamaʼs financial plan for the next three years focuses on maintaining this capital reserve as well as ensuring a sustainable operational budget.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Â FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2012

NOTE 1: SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES The financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (VIC). The committee has determined that the Association is not a reporting entity. The financial report has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (VIC) and the significant accounting policies disclosed below. The financial report has been prepared on a modified cash basis and is based on historical costs and does not take into account changing money values unless, or except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets. The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report. (a) Revenue Revenue from ticket sales is recognised on a cash basis. Grant revenue is recognised in the statement of comprehensive income when it is controlled. When there are conditions attached to grant revenue relating to the use of those grants for specific purposes, it is recognised in the consolidated statement of financial position as a liability until such conditions are met or services provided. Interest on financial assets are brought to account on an accrual basis. All revenue stated is net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST). (b) Employee Entitlements Long service leave entitlement is provided for in respect to employees with more than 7 years of service. Annual leave is expected to be taken within twelve months of entitlement. Entitlement in excess of a twelve month period is accrued. (c) Property, Plant and Equipment Freehold land and building and artwork are measured on the cost basis. Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis less accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. The depreciable amount of all fixed assets, excluding freehold land and building and artwork, is depreciated on a straight-line basis over the asset's useful life commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. (d) Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. (e) Income Tax No tax is payable as La Mama Incorporated and La Mama Trust are exempt under the provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

43.

(f) Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the consolidated statement of financial position are shown inclusive of GST. (g) Principles of Consolidation A controlled entity is any entity over which La Mama Incorporated has the power to govern the financial and operating policies so as to obtain benefits from its activities. As at the end of the reporting period, the assets and liabilities of the controlled entity, La Mama Trust, have been incorporated into the consolidated financial statements as well as their results for the year then ended. All inter-group balances and transactions between the entities in the consolidated group, including any unrealised profits or losses, have been eliminated on consolidation. Accounting policies of subsidiaries have been changed where necessary to ensure consistency with those adopted by the parent entity.

The committee's responsibility alos includes such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor's Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report is free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation of the financial report that gives

a true and fair view in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Qualification Due to insufficient verifiable evidence, we have been unable to agree the balance of box office takings as shown in Note 2 to the financial statements. Qualified Audit Opinion In our opinion, except for the matter referred to in the qualification paragraph, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of La Mama Incorporated and Controlled Entity as at 31 December 2012 and their financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, and the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (VIC). Basis of Accounting and Restriction of Distribution Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 1 to the financial statements, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the committee's financial reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (VIC). As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. MDHC Audit Assurance Pty Ltd
