How do we make sure Landau scrubs are “Made Better”? We talk to the real healthcare professionals who wear them—like Tina Shinault, Cancer Center RN.
Landau: What inspired you to become a nurse? Tina: When I was little, I had this little plastic stethoscope and a little doctor case. At first I wanted to become a doctor, but later I changed my mind. I’m glad because nurses are hands-on 24/7. I love it.
L: What is it about Landau scrubs that keeps you going on the job? T: Because I am on the move constantly, I love the big pockets. I also appreciate that the uniforms come in tall sizes. No short pants for me. My Landaus keep me looking nice and professional.
L: “My Landaus”—we like that. T: Yeah, I have had “My Landaus” since I started nursing nine years ago, and I’m still in them. And they still look presentable.
L: Do you have a favorite style of scrubs? T: Actually I like the ones I have on—a big pocket top and straight leg pants. I also like the snap-front top and flare leg pants. Those are my styles.
L: What about the fabrics? Do you like things with a little spandex in them? T: I’m more of a cotton person.
L: Because cotton scrubs breathe better? T: Yes, they keep me comfortable. That’s one reason I didn’t want to go into the corporate world, because I like to be relaxed. Meet Jennifer Williams, an Intensive Care Unit RN, as she shares her thoughts on what it takes to be a great nurse and look the part, too.
Landau: Tell us about a typical day for you. Or is there any such thing? Jennifer: Actually mine would be a typical night. As a night nurse in the ICU, I spend the evening trying to keep my patients going—their heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory system. More importantly, I also help the families deal with what’s going on. That’s the hardest thing.
L: You mentioned you come from a family of nurses. J: My mom is a nurse and my sister is a nurse—but we all have different specialties. So they’ll come to me and go, "We need an ICU nurse’s knowledge on this; can you please help us?" They taught me, and now I’m teaching them.
L: What do you like or dislike about scrubs? J: I love the way Landau tops fit. And they’re just so soft— like T-shirt material. But I’m not a fan of drawstring pants. In my opinion, you don’t want to look like a plumber while you’re working as a nurse.
L: As a young nurse getting your career started, is there any advice you would give to nursing students? J: It’s not just about your nursing skills. Textbook work is great, but if you don’t have the heart and compassion to care for your patients, you’re not going to be a good nurse. So try to take care of them as you would your own family. Landau: So what was it that attracted you to the nursing field? Drew: When I’m at work, I like to work. I don’t like to sit. I don’t like to not do anything. I’ve had a couple office jobs that were really good opportunities—but not a good fit for me.
L: You mentioned you were a bartender. How do you go from being a bartender to a nurse? D: It’s actually kind of similar in some ways. L: Okay…. D: I mean, you can joke about the fact that in both jobs you’re taking care of people. And each job requires time management skills. So you learn what’s really important.
L: How do Landau scrubs help you do your job as a nurse? D: They have to be functional—I’ve got to have cargo pants because I need all the pockets. And I need something that’s going to wash easily because I do get dirty.
L: So you like to work, and you need scrubs that work with you. Sounds like you’re pretty focused on the task at hand…. D: Yeah, it’s the same with buying my scrubs. I don’t really wear other brands besides Landau. Honestly. I stick with what I know. I know this is my size. I know how it fits me. I like these colors. I’ll just go get them.
