Christmas is a curious blend of twinkling lights, shopping, copious amounts of alcohol, makeup’s, breakups and that one family member asking, “So, are you chatting to anyone?” for the hundredth time. But for the LGBTQIA+ community, the season offers a chance to embrace joy and community while navigating traditions with a unique, fabulous flair.

If you’re wondering what to do this festive season, fear not! I’ve scoured the Emerald Isle to bring you the best LGBTQIA+-friendly Christmas activities. Whether you’re after dazzling events, cozy retreats, or a little escapism, there’s something for everyone. Let’s make this Christmas as inclusive, warm, and memorable as it should be.

Embrace the Christmas Markets

Belfast Christmas Market at City Hall is a mustvisit for festive cheer. Picture this: you’re wandering among wooden chalets, mulled wine in hand, and eyeing up artisanal crafts that you’ll convince yourself are “practical purchases.” But why stop at browsing? Northern Ireland’s queer community often gathers informally at these markets for a bit of mingling and merriment. Be sure to check local LGBTQIA+ social media groups for pop-up meetups and recommendations.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for LGBTQIA+-owned stalls. Supporting queer makers adds an extra sprinkle of pride to your purchases.

Drag Shows: The Gift That Keeps on Giving Drag and Christmas go together like sequins and glue guns—inevitably fabulous. Many venues across Belfast host holiday-themed drag shows that bring laughter, lip-syncs, and campy renditions of All I Want for Christmas Is You.

- Boombox Belfast is a hub for queer nightlife, and their holiday drag performances are legendary. Expect over-the-top costumes, biting humor, and a crowd that feels like family.

- Union Street Bar is another gem, often hosting drag bingo nights. Picture shouting “Full House!” while clutching a Baileys—it’s a vibe.

Festive Film Nights

Not every Christmas activity needs glitter and noise. Sometimes, the perfect evening involves a cozy blanket, a steaming mug of hot chocolate, and a festive film with LGBTQIA+ representation.

- Check out The Strand Arts Centre, a historic cinema in East Belfast, for holiday screenings. Many local LGBTQIA+ groups organize private screenings of queer-friendly classics like Happiest Season.

Christmas can be lonely, especially for those estranged from family. Thankfully, Northern Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ organizations have your back with welcoming meetups.

- The Rainbow Project hosts a range of festive gatherings, from coffee mornings to holiday dinners. These events are a safe space to connect with others in the community and find a bit of holiday magic.

- Cara-Friend often organizes events specifically for LGBTQIA+ youth, ensuring that everyone has a place to celebrate.

Bonus: Many meetups are free or donation-based, making them a budget-friendly way to socialize.

Experience the Outdoors

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle, Northern Ireland’s winter landscapes offer breathtaking beauty. And yes, you can make it queer—why not?

- Cave Hill Country Park: Gather some friends, pack a thermos of mulled cider, and take a brisk hike. The panoramic views of Belfast are worth the effort, even if you’re slightly hungover from the night before.

- The Gobbins Cliff Path: For something more adventurous, this dramatic coastal walk is open yearround and feels like stepping into a winter postcard.

Pro Tip: Wrap up warmly and bring a rainbow scarf—visibility is important in all senses!

Volunteer Your Time

Christmas is a time for giving, and volunteering is a fulfilling way to make a difference while connecting with others.

- Positive Life NI, Northern Ireland’s only HIV-specific charity, often seeks volunteers for their holiday initiatives.

- Food banks: Many LGBTQIA+ folks face financial hardship, so supporting food banks is a way to uplift the community.

Not only does volunteering warm your heart (and possibly your karma), but it’s also a chance to meet like-minded individuals and forge connections.

Queer Christmas Cabarets

Cabaret performances are the perfect blend of theatrical flair and holiday spirit. Keep an eye on venues like The MAC Belfast & Cabaret Supper Club which frequently hosts queer-inclusive performances during December.

From burlesque to comedy and live music, these events are a celebration of creativity and queerness wrapped in a glittery bow.

Reflect and Recharge

The holiday season can be overwhelming, especially if you’re navigating family tensions or personal challenges. Taking time for yourself is essential.

- Mindfulness practices: Apps like Calm or Headspace offer guided meditations specifically designed for the holiday season.

- Therapy: Many LGBTQIA+ support groups, like those at The Rainbow Project, offer counseling services if the season feels particularly heavy.

Remember, self-care is radical, especially in a world that often demands too much.

Humor Amid the Hustle

Of course, no Christmas feature is complete without acknowledging the quirks of the season.

From the relentless loop of Last Christmas in every shop to the questionable wisdom of tinsel as a decorative choice (why does it end up everywhere?), Christmas is as funny as it is stressful.

And let’s not forget the classic queer survival tactic: laughing through it all. Whether it’s rolling your eyes at straight couples under the mistletoe or giggling over your dog’s horrified expression in their Christmas jumper, humor is a gift that keeps on giving.

Christmas is a tapestry of traditions, old and new. It’s about finding joy in connection, whether through drag shows, shared meals, or a quiet moment watching the snow fall.

This year, let’s celebrate the diversity of our chosen families, the resilience of our community, and the simple pleasures that make the season bright. Because no matter how you choose to spend Christmas, you deserve to do it with pride, love, and maybe just a little glitter.

Happy holidays, and may your season be as queer and fabulous as you are
