Dr. Phuong “Phoenix” Nguyen is a boardcertified gastroenterologist who is a nationally recognized expert in the field of Gastroenterology and one of Southern California’s most experienced physicians in using endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to improve diagnosis and treatment. Her expertise includes minimally invasive approaches to the treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), bile duct diseases (ERCP), fecal incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction, obesity management and other advanced procedures. Dr. Nguyen graduated from the David Geffen School of Medicine of UCLA in 1990. She completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California, Irvine, and residency in internal medicine at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Nguyen is passionate about helping patients suffering from GERD, a chronic digestive disease that occurs when the liquid of the stomach travels back up into the esophagus, which can lead to tissue damage. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet can help reduce the risk of GERD, it is also treatable by medications and sometimes surgery such as the Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication or TIF procedure for reflux. “GERD symptoms might be obvious or can be silent. GERD is a mechanical failure of lower esophagus that when weakened over time can cause acid reflux,” explains Dr. Nguyen. “Patients suffering from GERD may experience heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, and other troubling symptoms that negatively impact quality of life.” Known for her expertise, dedication and quality of care, Dr. Nguyen adds, “It is a great honor to be recognized as a Physician of Excellence in the GI space, as it is truly a passion of mine.
