And you will also flex your own creative muscles with the creation of a practical thesis presentation reflecting on the relationship between your classical training and contemporary theatre practice. You will progress through the application of your acquired knowledge of both theory and practice as it relates to the intelligent exploration and development of original characters. Your first year will culminate in the staging of a Shakespeare production to which agents and casting directors are invited. You will also be afforded the opportunity to take part in a showcase for a market in which you are eligible for work (US or UK). From short courses to full time training at LAMDA, meet Calli My name is Calli Taylor, I’m a 23-year-old American actress currently completing LAMDA’s Classical Acting MA for the 2021-2022 school year. My journey in professional acting, though short, has taken me all over the world and given me some of the most profound insight into not only what it means to be an effective artist, but also what it means to appreciate the human experience. Raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles by a production designer and a publishing executive, I’ve been surrounded by the industry on all sides for as long as I can remember. I knew deep in my heart that I wanted to be a performer at a young age. I, of course, had always known of LAMDA and its reputation as one of the top institutions of its kind. Upon beginning the course in January of 2021, I knew immediately that I was about to experience something unlike anything I’d known thus far. Rodney Cottier, who is currently our director on the MA program, gave us the most profound and insightful education in understanding, dissecting, and appreciating Shakespeare’s works in the way they were intended to be consumed. We are a community built on mutual passion, respect, and a genuine drive to lift up and encourage one another. We cultivate a welcome and open space, so that each and every one of us feel strengthened and prepared for the careers we have ahead of us.

Simply put, there’s no place else I’d rather be at present.

Calli studied on a short course before auditioning for the MA Classical programme. Read the full article on our blog - www.lamda.ac.uk/life-lamda/news 17

Tips from the audition panel Choose a piece and a character which fascinates you. You can really tell when someone has chosen a piece that they connect to and auditions almost always work better if the actor has chosen something they love. Use your nerves. Everyone gets nervous; it’s something which never goes away. It’s your job in an audition to show how you harness your nerves to bring a character to life for an audience. Listen carefully to what the panel tell you. As well as taking a moment to focus, listen to the instructions the panel give you. If they ask you to stand in a certain place or do your pieces in a certain order, make sure you follow the instruction. Listening is such an important part of acting so make sure you show that you understand that. Connect with the panel. Don’t be frightened to take a moment to make eye contact with the panel and regain your focus once you’re in the audition room. At drama school auditions certainly, the panel will have seen all manner of ways in which actors focus themselves, so don’t be afraid to do whatever it takes to do your best. Know your character. Think about what your character was doing directly before we meet them in your monologue and how that is affecting them. Think about precisely where they are and what their relationship is to that place. Think about exactly who they are talking to, what they think of that person / those people, what they think the person / people think of them. What do they actively want to achieve by saying the things they say? Make sure you have fully harnessed your imagination to their situation. Make sure you’ve read the play and understand it.

How does accommodation work at LAMDA? LAMDA is not a classic campus college, however we will support you to find accommodation in London during the time you are training with us. If you’re training on a Semester programme with us, we book rooms in West London for you, if you’re training on a full time course you’re expected to find accommodation yourself. Many students share a house with one another, find out more details on our accommodation page: lamda.ac.uk/all-courses/coming-lamda/housing-london Alternatively for more advice on coming to London as an international applicant, visit: lamda.ac.uk/life-lamda/international-applicants Is there funding available for my country? The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) and the Department of Eduction in your home country are helpful resources for providing information on financial support. Read more on our website. Go to lamda.ac.uk/all-courses/fund-your-training/international-student-funding. Have a question? Email admissions@lamda.ac.uk 28
