EXPO DESIGN
TYPE Urban Design Project LOCATION New Giza, Egypt DURATION January - May 2016
The main aim of the project was to design an Expo that houses 60 pavillions from diverse countries. Each student was required to choose a country from five different continents : South America, North Americe, Europe, Africa, & Asia. The main design aspect was to reflect the features of every chosen country in a form of a pavillion in terms of exterior and interior concepts. The location is proposed to be in New Giza, a 4 km long site area; where all designs are situated according to the chosen continent. The project aim was to develop a masterplan design for every continent which therefore highlights the connection between the designed pavillions and the proposed landscape concept.

EXPO DESIGN
The masterplan design of every continent reflected the features related to the countries within every continent. For example, Asia is mainly known for it’s tropical and desert characteristics, which are present in the interconnecting space between every pavillion. The Expo’s design concept is mainly designed to maximize the social interaction & the landscape areas of the whole site area. Moreover the esstential points that were considered are the walkability concepts, the use of public transportation to maintain a healthy environment compared to the current situation in Cairo; which is ranked as one the most polluted cities worldwide.

The main aim of the roject was to design a master plan for the proposed new capital of Egypt. This is due to the increasing population of Egypt, therefore the need for a larger area is a crucial issue. Therefore the solution to this issue was to design a New Capital which would house the issue of population increase inorder to house the future generations. The first part of the project was to propose a masterplan that consists of different functions such as : Education, Medical, Start- ups, Central Buisness District, Sport, & Residential area. Each area mainly targets different age groups in divesrse generation; however all areas are designed to maximize the social interaction & the landscape areas of the whole city. Moreover the esstential points that were considered are the walkability concepts, the use of public transportation to maintain a healthy environment compared to the current situation in Cairo; which is ranked as one the most polluted cities worldwide.

NEW CAPITAL DESIGN
The design project started with three procedures, the first process involved designing the master plan of the purposed Egypt’s new capital city, which was further divided into 6 differentzones which are : Central Business District Zone, Cultural Zone, Medical Zone, Sports Zone, Housing Zone & Start-ups Zone. The Start-ups master plan concept evolved around encompassing a main hub as the core of the zone, which mostly highlighted the idea of society interaction. The first layer demonstrates the plots inside the blocks, and how the landscape area is surrounded by it, hightlighting also the main Hub which is situated in the center masterplan. The second layer shows the arrangemet of the whole masterplan in relation to the whole masterplan context, which also highlights the open spaces between the blocks and plots. The third layer mainly shows how the blocks are arranged in a way which is essential when it comes to designing the masterplan of the city; The main blocks are distributed along four main funtions : Startups zone, cultural zone, educational zone and research zone.

The proposed master plan consisted of different layers such as : Plot Layer, which consists of the buildings and plots. The second layer is the block layer which represents the buildings itself within the plot. The third layer is the street layer which forms the main axis which divides the whole master plan into a functional zone, the first street connects it to the Central Buisness District Area, the second from the Cultural Zone, the third street from the medical zone and the last street is from the Residential zone. The fourth layer is the spine layer, which is basically the designed green layer of the Stratups zone; which adds the environment aspect of the masterplan. Firsty, the spine is divided into 3 main axis which are connected to 3 main zones ( Cultural Zone, Residential Zone & the Central Buisness District Zone ). The secondary spine circulates the whole masterplan which is a walkable distance between the plots. The main spine is connected to the Hub of the city which is highlighting the concept of having a main social inter-acting area for people living in the Start-up zone.

After designing the public library, the third procedure was to design the landscape of the convention center which is situated on the opposite side of the public library. The landscape design concept is dervied from the extension of lines from the form of both the public library & the convention center; which therefore created an outline for the design of the landscape which extends by three meters to the underground level.

ARCHEOLOGICAL CENTER
TYPE Building Technology Project LOCATION Aswan, Egypt DURATION February - June 2015
The aim of this project is to design an Archeological Institute in the island of Elephantine, which is located in the River Nile opposite the city of Aswan. Over the centuries there has been a great deal of building activity on Elephantine, though most of the pre-historic structures are now misplaced. The island also contains other features such as the Aswan Museum, that exhibits the findings by the German archeologist, such as mummies, weapons, pottery, utensils, andstatues. Therefore, this highlights the need of an Archeological Institute which is to house the tourists that visit the island, and also to accommodate a working space for the German Archeologists and researchers coming from abroad whose main target is the ongoing excavation work of the ancient Archeological site.

Research Centers are a key element in the creation and on-going operation of national development in Egypt, supported by the appropriate scientific work and advanced applications. A new Research Center for renewable Energy Technologies (RECRET) is proposed to address critical scientific and technological challenges and gaps facing the future of energy resources & supplies in Egypt, by creating a suitable environment to advance relevant knowledge, foster innovations and to educate students as well. The mission of RECRET is to integrate advanced international research and education in that field, based on academic excellence and the spirit of innovation, where it will be created as part of number of collaborative multi-university research facilities. PLASTIC CUPS WORKSHOPS
SUPERVISOR LAMIS ABDULLAH
The purpose of the workshop is to let the students be aware of the consumption rate of plastic cups on campus within a period of 2 months.. Students have been collecting plastic cups since 16th December 2018 where they started the process by installing white plastic bags in the B - C - D Buildings infront of water dispensers. Th following step was for students on campus to dispose their cups in these hanged bags beside the water dispensers. The process was then followed by collecting and placing white plastic bags on an interval of 3 days weekly. The total number of cups collected during an interval of ( 2 months ) is 21,000 plastic cups. The implementation of the sculpture was set on 2 days. The first day was set to sort & count the total number of collected cup inorder to decide the design area. The second day was mainly experimental design of the purposed sculpture. The main contributors of the workshop were 46 - & 43 - students.

The following project mainly tackled the Japanese culture and how its a truly an intricate one; The student researched about Tokyo in specific, and how it was impacted with multiple external and internal factors, which resulted in the formation of the unique city, both culturally and urbanely. Furthmore, it shows how in Tokyo, the natural tradition is gathering and celebration; hence, endorsing intimacy of the social interaction nuclei. and how it adds social connectivity to the community. The student had to analyze and the map the locations of solo restaurants in Tokyo, which resulted in forming a series of visual propositions which highlights the severe impact on the social strata in the city, and how it germinated from the responsive architecture of the Culinary Scene.

Project Management and Construction course aims to introduce students to the complexity of construction projects and consequently the means to properly manage and control projects. In groups of 3-5 the students design a residential building and develop the following : floor plans, sections, elevations and visualizations. The following step requires the students to integrate the PMCM concepts that they learn throughout the course, where they produce : project work breakdown structure, cost estimates, time schedules, cash flow, etc. and define the delivery methods depending on the different types of contracts involved, with the identification of risks. Also, a method statement is devoloped that explains a detailed step-by-step construction process of a certain activity within the project. .

ART GALLERY // THE DIVE
The Dive is an Art Galllery in El-Gouna, Egypt. The villa is designed to be built on a 400 m2 land on a private island between two bigger islands. The building footprint will only be 60% of the built area. It was a crucial challenge for them to understand the process of cast-in-place piling of concrete. Moreover, understanding the sequence of the marine construction as it was part of their design process of the basement floor. From my side, more ideas and solutions in terms of the process of construction and how to develop a detailed method statement of the cast-in place piling process.

The dream house is a residential building for a real estate developer in New Cairo. The villa is designed to be built on a 400 sqm, where the land price is estimated to be around 4 million EGP. The building footprint will only be 60% of the built area. It was a crucial challenge for them to understand the sequence and connections for the installation of prefabricated concrete panels. Moreover, understanding the construction sequence of the building starting from the excavation phase until the final handover of the project. From my side, more ideas and solutions in terms of the process of construction and how to develop a detailed method statement of the prefabricated concrete panels installation.

The students main concept was forming a connection between the inside and the outside by bringing everything together through transparency and creating a relationship between solid and void. This was achieved through the use of roof gardens and terraces a smooth transition between the indoor and the outdoor. Furthermore, this also forms a balance which creates a sense of unity and comfort within the house.

The course Introduction to Architecture Design teaches students the principles and conventions of how to design a building. The students were required to design a residential small scale villa , which was primarily based on a concept; they further transformed the concept to reflect on the extrerior and interior spaces. The students were required to develop conceptual forms, floor plans, sections, elevations and 3D Isomteric views of the building. I helped the students in the primary stage in terms of understanding what is a concept, what is it derived from it, and how can it be reflected in a design project. It was challenging for them to understand the process of concept translation, and how to generate from the concept diverse ideas, and how the concept and context complements the design of their building. Moreover, I also taught them how to arrange different spaces, in a certain area in relation to the conceptual idea, also taking into consideration the technical issues.

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY I

The main focus of the course Building Technology I is a brick construction process. The course required students to design a room and draw detailed sections, evations in different scales to show the different level of details which will appear in the different scales. I helped in teaching the students, the concept of scale, the different construction layers that are present in the building floors. I also taught them, the different brick arrangements including their connections. It was challenging for the students to understand the floor layers and the technicalities that are included in the drawings.

The Neighbourhood, a project within the framework of picturing the city, transforming the space, is a process based team work in Freehand Drawing and Modelling. Starting with a picture from their neighbourhood, students analyzed and depicted urban, architecturall situation. The next step was to form a 10 step abstraction by extracting different elements into geometric forms. The following step was to transform the abstracted elements into one poster, named under the process of transformation. Moving on to the final step, the students build a model of the transformation poster in a 3 dimensional physical model.

VISUAL DESIGN

Visual design aims at providing the fundamental visual and presentation skills that students need for their upcoing years. Illustrations, photography, collage-making, and visual narrations of spatial, architectural and urban-related elements are the main means of media used throughout the course. The final project started by reading chapters from the book “Sinbad : Legend of the Seven Seas� , the following step was to translate the readings into sketches, collages and illustration inorder to reach the final outcome of the Shadow Box. Much attension is given to percision, detailing, views and perspectives, and compositions. The course highly encourages fictitious renderings of the specific dispositions and sentiments related to architecture, helping students facilitate their inner creative selves and their own approach to architectural design. The narrative and fictional architecture compositions are the experimental field in the first year.

3D MODEL-MAKING

A main topic in architecture is the relation between object and space, which is determined by spatial and sculptural dimensions. The practical course of Transformation in space introduces spatial and sculptural aspects in architecture. Besides the development of architectural model-making, the students create their own spatial ideas, concepts and design. The focus of the course is lying on a series of material and process exercises as well as on the realization of architectural models which are based on conceptual architectural ideas. Several topics and skills are discussed throughout the semester, as transformation process, addition and subtraction, impression and expression, body and space, sculptural form, surface, weight, materiality, colors, light and shadow.

Students were challenged by continuing the method of abstraction and analysis by writing their own names as if they were logos or geomteric patterns in arabic. Their personal tags were extruded to a 3-dimensional figure, then transformed to an architectural form. For the modelling part the students created a new compostion consisting of alphabet buildings. The challenge was to createa consistent urban pattern or figure within the group, and to create an individual plot with distinctive features. Students completed the project phase by making a drawing of the whole situation with all details, shapes, light and shadow.
