DARE Welcome to the first issue of

DARE!!

I remember those days when I had my cats as my alarm to go to school, they were never late, jumping and bouncing on me at half eight sharp. This is dedicated to two of my beloved cats, you will always be in my heart. I would like to begin the first issue of DARE with cats. People love cats, including big cats- movies and musicals about cats; designers inspired by cats. Their alluring eyes, their soft fur, the unique pattern of the fur, their arrogant characteristic, and their elegant behaviours – all are inspiring. Being elegant, energetic and playful, cats and fashion have so much in common that they are connected. This is my first letter to all the fashion lovers who love cats and those who are interested in how fashion takes inspirations. Being one of the biggest inspirations for fashion, catwalks and leopard prints are the best example of fashion taking inspiration from cats. In this issue, we will be looking at the how cats can relate to fashion, styling-wise and behaviour-wise, introducing Karl Lagerfeld, one of the greatest fashion designers who often takes inspirations from his favourite cat Choupette. We will also be interviewing art students to see how they take inspirations from their cats. What innovations can a famous fashion designer and art students create from cats? In the next issue, we will feature the A-Z list of famous artists and designers who have taken inspiration from things we never thought of in our daily lives. Also, we will be interviewing a well-known jewellery designer whose name is to be kept secret until the next issue. His collection shocked the world because of his boldness and creativity. Enjoy the first issue of fashion purr-fection! It is my pleasure to guide the tour.

Popia Phillips It’s often hard to decide what to do and where to begin before starting a new project. The question most people would ask: Where do I start? No wonder, there is so much to take inspiration from, so much that people lose themselves in this dazzling world. To help all of you students and new designers to save time with struggling with ideas, we have an illustration student Popia Phillips here today to share her success of A* projects about cats - she is a massive cat lover and she loves putting her cat in her work and we shall have a look what she brings to us.

Describe your cat. My cat is called Luna, she is a tabby cat, medium to short haired. And she is quite mischievous! What do you like and don’t like about Luna? I love that my cat comes and sits on me first thing in the morning, and how loving she can be as she has her own character and is very playful! On the down side I must receive a couple of birds or mice per week. Gosh, She is definitely a hunter! And when she is in a mood, she will just ignore me completely which I really hate. What do you think Luna feels about you? I know my cat has a close bond with me because I am the only one who can pick her up and she will sit comfortably in my arms.

Why is Luna inspiring? I think it is to do with a personal bond between pet and owner. I share a ‬love with my animal that’s personal to me. Her cheeky character also inspires me and puts a playfulness into my work. What do you like and don’t like about Luna that you might put in your work? Why? I like to take still life drawing from my cat to get practice; I like to capture the likeness of Luna in my work using my drawing techniques for her fur and features. But I expand upon this look afterwards, with my imagination, to make my drawing more interesting. How does Luna help you develop and improve your ideas? She helps me with ideas more than anything because of her form, it a good way to practice drawing cats! She helps me improve my ideas I think, just because I am a bit of a crazy cat lady and cats in general inspire me and my work. For one project I used cats to represent feminism. Would you like to tell us about the project? Well, I decided upon using cats in my feminist project to represent the female as I found that to be quite symbolic. I decided to take my project into the area of film and especially Disney, so I based all my illustrations on the character of Cinderella. I found that she is a very stereotypical lead woman, in the fifties film adaptation especially. I felt that if people could recognise or even relate to a characterw, that I would have a better chance in communicating a message - I wanted to say how women’s roles were most represented within Disney, and how this could have portrayed women in an unsavoury way. I created my illustrations on Wacom, inspired by the fifties era of art also adding my own style. How does Luna help when you are struggling? Luna helps me when I’m struggling. I would say this goes in all parts of life not just my projects. I always feel more relaxed when she is on my lap or purring. Seeing her happy make me happy. Have you ever considered getting a second cat or is Luna the one? I would definitely be a crazy cat lady if I could! Luna is the best, but I would like to give her a couple of friends! Seeing as I’m living at home, my mum wouldn’t get any more cats so unfortunately I can’t! I’m still very happy however to have at least one cat who I love very much!

Karl Lagerfeld X Choupette

In French, Choupette means “sweetie”. No doubt, she is. She is the muse of Karl Lagerfeld – one of the greatest designers. What has he done to put the cat on the catwalk?

Walk Walk Walk Cat Cat Cat Cat Cat Cat 2012, was the year Karl Lagerfeld took in his muse Choupette and had innovations from her since then. Lagerfeld once said to Kristina O’Neil from Harper Bazaar, “She’s really a stunning beauty. Her eyes are blue, blue, blue, blue, blue. And also her movement is so beautiful.” It was a big hit when Karl Lagerfeld revealed his spring summer collection 2012 and for Chanel in the Grand Palais. The SS 2012’s venue was decorated and turned into an aircraft cabin, with blue carpet and windows of blue skies, audiences seated in blue business class seats as part of the set. The hue of the collection is mainly blue and black - these are exactly the colour of Choupette’s eyes. Like SS 2012 collection, Lagerfeld has again based his collection equally on his muse. In the FW 2012 collection features daywear and eveningwear, but mostly are eveningwear. There are hues of grey and pink with sparkling opaque gray tights to embellish. These are the colour palettes of Choupette – creamy pink and reddish pink are taken from the inside of her ears, the shiny gray and light grey are from the colour of her fur. Even the fabrics Lagerfeld chose for the collection, especially the eveningwear are light and furry. As the models stroll down the runway, the fabrics and the feather or fur sinuously glide with the body movements. Even though Lagerfeld used embroidered tweeds for the coatdress as daywear, he cleverly designed the tops cut on the cross and the skirts on the bias, the fabrics are more flexible, adding swing to the step. Compared to the previous collection, Lagerfeld has made huge changes on his design styles, taking away the bold and hard silhouettes and replacing them with slick and feminine silhouettes. The SS collection was all about clean cut silhouette while the FW collection is about fur and gauze. The elegance of this collection totally relates to the characteristic of cats. The first collection mirrored the eyes of Choupette and the latter one is influenced by the appearance and movements of her. These all relate to how Lagerfeld described Choupette. He has taken the beauty of Choupette and combined it with fashion to create a whole new collection of wonder. Lagerfeld has excelled with a superb mission in putting the cat on the catwalk.
