Technology has been a driving force in the auction world for much of the last two decades and Los Angeles Modern Auctions has historically been at the forefront of new ideas in this field. In fact, the very word “Modern” in our name was not just a descriptor of the product, but was intentionally meant to convey that we were establishing a platform of up-to-date processes. When LAMA was founded in 1992, fax machines and VHS tapes helped our small, independent company get its product out to a larger audience. Cell phones had their impact as well. The internet, of course, created profound opportunities and has led to a certain parity between large and small auction houses because it helps buyers seek out great material wherever it may surface. LAMA has always seen modern technology not as a bell or whistle, or even just a convenience for clients, but rather as a tool to create efficiencies. For example, if our website, www.lamodern.com, can one day replace our printed catalogue, this would be an efficiency that would ultimately result in lower commissions for both buyer and seller, and would reduce the amount of lead time before each auction, which in turn would lead to increased annual volume capacity. I believe in modern technologies and know that the new, fascinating tools in our field are in our not so distant future. In the present, however, LAMA brings to you another stellar group of Modern works of Art and Design, most of which have been tucked away in estates and private collections for decades. In Fine Art, we have several rare and previously undocumented local Los Angeles historical works. Two presentation drawings by Herman Sachs of our City Hall and Forest Lawn represent a pre-WWII era aesthetic that was obviously informed by the Art Deco movement, but staying distinctly American. We are especially proud to offer for the first time on the market, a complex and detailed preliminary drawing by Charles White of the Mary McLeod Bethune mural created for the Exposition Park branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. The post war period is also well represented by a seminal, early painting from Llyn Foulkes, a mini survey of works by John Altoon, and a rare early lithograph by fellow Ferus alum, Ed Ruscha. In our Design section, we have an increasingly rare offering of a nearly intact original interior by William “Billy” Haines. Featuring many of Haines’ most celebrated icons such as the “Seniah” chairs, lamps with Chinese ceramics, and long dramatic seating, this collection is being published for the first time in over 50 years and represents a rare opportunity to acquire works with clear provenance from a legendary Hollywood family. Finally, a collection of furniture by Hans Wegner and studio works by Sam Maloof and noted California ceramicists round out a fine offering of design, most of which having never before traded hands. JOHN ALTOON Before his untimely death at the age of 43, John Altoon (1925-1969) developed a post-modern style that was only outsized by his magnetic personality. Altoon’s drawings and paintings depict Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist renderings of playful, erotic, and bizarre subjects. After attending the Otis Art Institute, the Art Center College of Design, and Chouinard Art Institute, Altoon’s steady hand earned him stable income in commercial illustration. In the late 50s, his success coincided with the rise of Ferus Gallery on La Cienega where he exhibited his work along with Billy Al Bengston, Larry Bell, Ed Kienholz, and Robert Irwin. Director of the gallery, Irving Blum, once said, “If the gallery was closest in spirit to a single person, that person was John Altoon – dearly loved, defiant, romantic, highly ambitious – and slightly mad.” As seen in Untitled from 1961 and Untitled (Sunset Series) from 1964, Altoon’s work is idiosyncratic in figurative abstraction, rife with oddball biomorphic forms, and frenetic in approach, yet in color, imagery, and attitude, representative of this highly influential period in Los Angeles art. “He was a complete natural,” recalls Billy Al Bengston. “He was the most brilliant, off-the-top guy. It probably killed him to have to think because he’d just come up with things and he’d do it. There was no challenge.” Similar examples to these works from the 50s and 60s will be exhibited in “John Altoon” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the first major retrospective devoted to the now legendary Los Angeles artist. “John Altoon.” The Collection. CHARLES WHITE Originally from Chicago, Charles White (1918-1979) was a mural painter and educator who settled in Los Angeles in the late 1950s. At the age of seven, White’s mother bought him an oil painting set, and from there, White devoted all of his free time to art. “Art became the most important thing in my life,” said White. By the age of 14 he was hired as a sign painter, which earned him money to pay for his membership in the Arts and Crafts Guild. The group of young black artists collected enough money for a member to take one art lesson at the Chicago Art Institute so he could return to teach the rest of the group what he had learned. White's single lesson was highly influential to the young artist, and a few years later his hard work and technical prowess earned him a scholarship to the art school in 1937, and three years later an invitation to work for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Arts Project. Through this opportunity, White celebrated the black heroes of the United States in numerous murals, including one of his most famous, Five Great American Negroes (1945) at Howard University where he was artist in residence. After a life-changing sojourn in rural Mexico, White and his family fled the stifling city life in New York for Altadena, California in 1957. Beginning in 1965, he taught at the Otis Art Institute where he devoted the later years of his life to education, though he found time to paint murals. He established a studio in the now historic Castle Green in Pasadena, an open air room separated from the main building that provided White the cross ventilation and natural light necessary to complete his final mural, Mary McLeod Bethune (1978), still hanging at the Exposition Park Branch of the L.A. Public Library. This preliminary sketch was completed in preparation for the mural, a tribute to Mary Bethune, one of the most influential African American educators of the 20th century. The sketch and mural both depict Bethune surrounded by a father strumming a guitar, a mother, and a child reading. White labored for nine months to complete the five by seven mural, and having only been paid a modest 3,000 dollars, it is a testament to his lifelong dedication to learning. “Mary McLeod Bethune.” Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles. HARRY BERTOIA With iconic contributions in sculpture, printmaking, jewelry, and furniture design, Italian-born artist Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) established himself as one of the most innovative designers of the 20th century. He was often inspired by nature and music, and in the early 1960s, he embarked on a sonic journey to join the two disciplines. While Bertoia was working on a sculpture that consisted of several standing rods, he accidentally broke a rod, causing it to crash into another rod, resulting in a sound that resonated deeply with the artist. According to Bertoia himself, this sound “initiated a deliberate gesture in search of understanding what a group of wires would do.” Throughout the 1960s, Bertoia created over a hundred sound sculptures consisting of rows of flexible copper rods that sway when touched or blown, producing various tones depending on the length and mass of the rods. He referred to this sonorous atmosphere as Sonambient, the resulting environment created by the gentle clangor of the rods. In his rural Pennsylvania barn he renovated for optimal acoustics, Bertoia arranged over one hundred of these sculptures in a specific tonal order and recorded eleven Sonambient albums. Many of his sounding sculptures utilized several reverberating rods, while this unique example features only two. Surely this minimalist instrument played an equally essential role in the symphony of more elaborate sounding sculptures, and alone, it produces a pure, zen-inducing chime. William "Billy" Haines (1900-1973) devoted his life to good taste and design, a passion he pursued after starring in his final film in 1934. On and off set, he was a self-proclaimed wisecrack, yet to his Hollywood friends he was a charming man of confidence, which made for a smooth transition from the silver screen to the living room interior. He famously remarked, “I can only tell you this – I would rather have taste than either love or money.” After opening his own antique shop on La Brea Avenue, decorating costar Joan Crawford’s home, and renovating and decorating acclaimed director George Cukor’s home, Haines transformed the 10-acre Beverly Hills home of Jack Warner of Warner Brothers into “the most talked-about residence in Los Angeles.” Haines’ design vocabulary – Chinoiserie and Classical objects blended with a modern touch – is clearly represented in the Warner estate. By the later years of his life, Haines was one of the most sought after interior designers, especially amongst the Hollywood elite. In 1960, Rita Roedling, daughter of Mervyn & Kitty LeRoy, commissioned Haines to produce numerous custom designs. The LeRoys are well-known for their contributions in the film industry. The renowned director Mervyn LeRoy produced The Wizard of Oz and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his extensive accomplishments in film. In the early 1950s, they collaborated with Haines to furnish the interior of their Samuel Marx-designed home in Bel Air. Around the same time in 1953, Haines worked with Tom & Anita May to furnish the interior of their Samuel Marx-designed home in Holmby Hills, a neighborhood adjacent to Beverly Hills and Bel Air. Both the Mays and LeRoys were passionate supporters of Haines. While Haines was known for his flawless attention to detail and clever taste, he also had a discerning eye for design. As his business flourished in the 1940s and 50s, Haines began designing his own furniture and lamps. His custom lamps – usually incorporating acquired sculptures or antiques – were included in almost every interior. And no Haines interior was complete without custom furniture, from chairs and couches to entire dining room sets. The intersection of these early champions of Haines’ interiors is displayed in the details of the Rita Roedling commission: a table lamp with a Tang Style figure, which incorporates a ceramic from the LeRoys’ Haines and Marx interior, as well as two Ledge Back “Seniah” chairs, one of his most celebrated and enduring creations. EUDORAH MOORE Through her pioneering work for the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum), Eudorah Moore (1918-2013) organized groundbreaking exhibitions that introduced the world to California design. Her legacy began when she founded the Pasadena Art Alliance in 1954 where she soon became an instrumental figure in the arts and crafts community. She served as the curator and director of the California Design Programs of the Pasadena Art Museum, and was also the design curator from 1962-1977. Moore invited artists from every field of arts, crafts, and design, often incorporating recreational and outdoor activities such as playground sets and skateboards with Southern California’s best art and design. The resulting exhibitions presented the textiles, tapestries, pottery, and furniture that comprised a distinctly Californian lifestyle. "She is one of the most important people in the history of California design," said Bill Stern, executive director of the Museum of California Design. "What was really extraordinary is that she had the ability to recognize what was important at the time it was being made." From 1978-1981, Moore served as the visual arts coordinator for the National Endowment for the Arts. LLYN FOULKES Los Angeles artist and musician Llyn Foulkes (b. 1934) creates paintings, installations, and tableaux of biting social commentary, often utilizing a concoction of pop icons, American landscapes, and violent imagery. After serving in the Korean War, Foulkes moved to Los Angeles to attend the Chouinard Art Institute and had his first exhibition at Ferus Gallery in 1959. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, his work ranged from melancholy assemblages and skillful American landscapes to his “bloody head” portraits. During this period, Foulkes amassed international awards including the 1967 Prize for Painting at the Paris Biennale. The Hammer Museum recently exhibited Foulkes’ 50-year retrospective, “LLYN FOULKES,” which highlighted some of his most recent “narrative tableaux that combine painting with woodworking, found materials, and thick mounds of mixed media, seamlessly blended into the painted surface to create a remarkable illusion of depth.” In one of these early multi-layered works, Within Ercha (1960), oil, tar, and collage coalesce to depict a moment from Foulkes’ own life. The abstract black figure swooping across the upper right section of the piece is Foulkes’ pet raven at the time, Ercha. This is one of the first paintings inspired by his black bird, and Foulkes continued incorporating the name Ercha in other works from this era. His work has always been “intensely personal.” The devastation he witnessed during his military service erupts in black swaths throughout his early paintings and have become a Foulkes emblem. In a recent interview, Foulkes said, “I never got that out of my mind, ever. I still haven't. That anybody could do anything like that to people.” This painting was included in his solo show at the Oakland Art Museum in 1964 and again in “The Last Time I Saw Ferus” at the Newport Harbor Museum in 1976. “LLYN FOULKES.” Hammer Exhibitions. JOHN SMITH Throughout the mid-century in Los Angeles, textile artists produced vibrant tapestries and mosaics to accent California homes and businesses. Evelyn and Jerry Ackerman and Millard Sheets figure as the most prominent of these artists, but the robust craft movement of the era featured many other talented individuals, including the Los Angeles artist John Smith. Known for his tapestries and mosaics, Smith’s designs were featured in the California Design exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum as well as the interiors of several buildings by Welton Becket, the Los Angeles architect responsible for the Capitol Records Building in Hollywood. Smith’s tapestries are bright narratives designed to complement the warm interiors of mid-century Southern California. Alluding to an ancient era, Untitled (Woman) features an angular sun and geometric lines similar to the scene depicted in Warriors from the 1962 exhibition “California Design/Eight.” California Design/Eight. We will not execute absentee or phone bid orders unless a signed and completed bid form has been received. All Absentee/Phone bid forms must be received by Saturday,
May 17, 2014 by 5:00 p.m. (PST) via fax to (323) 904-1954 or scanned and sent via email: shannon@lamodern.com. We encourage you to call after faxing to confirm we have received your bid. We kindly ask that you do not call on the day of the sale to submit bids or to check if your bids were successful. All successful absentee/phone bidders will be notified by phone or email by May 20, 2014. In addition, the auction prices realized will be posted the day after the sale on our website. Do not rely on any auction results (prices realized) unless published on www.LAMODERN.com or as provided directly by Modern Auctions, Inc. Absentee/Phone bids are on a first-come, first-served basis; thus, we encourage you to submit your form ASAP. If identical absentee bids are submitted, the earliest received will take precedence. The number of phone lines available are limited so please submit your phone requests early. On all absentee/phone bid forms, please leave a valid credit card number with expiration date; a deposit of 25% may be required for all absentee and phone bids. Please note that we only accept credit card payments in person. For those absentee/phone bidders who are unable to come in personally to pay, we will only accept either a certified check or wire transfer as a method of payment (see “Payment” notice). The party responsible for submitting the absentee or phone bid is solely responsible for the payment in full of the total invoice. We will not make any changes to an invoice. Should a dispute arise after the sale, our sale records are conclusive. We are not responsible for failure to execute a bid and have the right to reject any bid. We reserve the right to withdraw any property before the sale and shall have no liability whatsoever for such withdrawal. Should an item be withdrawn, the auctioneer will make an announcement at the time the lot would have been put up for sale. In addition, the auctioneer may add lots not previously listed in the catalogue or addendum. If the buyer does not comply with all of the notices to buyers, Modern Auctions, Inc. reserves the right to cancel the sale, hold the defaulting buyer liable for the purchase price and buyer’s premium, retain any deposit, and resell the property privately or at auction without further notice. In the latter, the defaulting buyer will be held responsible for all incurred expenses, such as warehouse and transportation costs, commissions, incidentals, and shall be liable for payment of any deficiency in the purchase price. This is strictly enforced. We reserve the right to assess a late charge of 1.5% of the total purchase price per month if payment is not made in accordance with any of these conditions of sale.
GUARANTEE The authenticity of every item offered for sale is guaranteed. Modern Auctions, Inc. warrants only the authorship of an item (as printed in BLUE type) and does not guarantee the condition, age, or any identifying characteristic used by Modern Auctions, Inc., in any descriptions such as color, method of construction, and type of materials. Any lot using the terms “attributed,” “attribution,” “in the style of,” “in the manner of,” or “after” does not qualify for our guarantee. In addition, the buyer assumes responsibility for reading all addendums and posted corrections to the catalogue prior to bidding.
RESCISSION Should the authenticity of an item be disputed after a sale, the buyer has 90 days from the date of the auction to provide written documentation or conclusive opinion of a mutually agreed upon independent expert, retained at the buyer's sole expense, that the item in question is not as stated in the catalogue. In the event of an error, Modern Auctions, Inc. will rescind the purchase contract. Modern Auctions, Inc. will reimburse the buyer for no more than the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium and only after the item is returned to the original point of sale in the condition in which it was sold. Taxes, packing, shipping, and storage costs will not be reimbursed. Modern Auctions, Inc. is not liable for any costs, such as expert's and attorney’s fees. If the item is authentic, as stated in the Modern Auctions, Inc. catalogue, then the purchaser shall bear Modern Auctions, Inc.’s expenses incurred in defense of the allegation, such as attorney’s fees and other costs. The limited right of rescission is only available to the original purchaser from Modern Auctions, Inc. Once the item is resold, then all rights and liabilities of Modern Auctions, Inc. regarding authenticity end. THE PURCHASER’S SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY AGAINST MODERN AUCTIONS, INC.
