In anticipation of “Pacific Standard Time”, an initiative of The Getty that launches this fall, we are excited to offer many iconic California works in this auction. From paintings and prints, to ceramics and furniture, you will see many similar works in dozens of participating institutions and galleries along the West Coast starting in September. Unique design originals by Neutra, Natzler, Espenet, Maloof, and many others, are quickly disappearing from view in the market and will be increasingly hard to source in the very near future. William “Billy” Haines’ work has often found a happy buyer at LAMA, but we have never before seen a piece actually stamped or marked in any way. Provenance is usually the selling point, but in this sale two pieces that were made for F. Hugh and Mary Herbert, relatively unknown names in Hollywood today, are stamped “DESIGNED BY WM. HAINES”. Other works from this commission include lamps, tables, seating and pictures all selected by Haines at the height of his career. Robert Rauschenberg’s Untitled (Combine) 1958 was created out of intense artistic passion and is infused with care and sensitivity that one only finds in a work made by an artist for a close friend. It is small the way a Fabergé egg is small. Conversely, the actual concept behind the Combines from this period was enormous and is of staggering importance in Modern Art history, with larger examples topping $10 million within the past year. MAN RAY AND JAMES BYRNES James Byrnes, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art from 1946 to 1953, first met Man Ray at a barbeque in the summer of 1949. Byrnes described Man Ray as “difficult to start a conversation with” because he “disliked critics and museum people.” Shortly thereafter, however, Byrnes became friends with Man Ray and his social group, which included artist William Copley, his student and muse Gloria de Herrera, his wife Juliet, and Selma Browner. This original collection, unearthed from Byrnes’ estate, depicts Man Ray, his life and his friends, who were perpetual subject matter. We see the more familiar “darkly serious” Man Ray as well as moments of jovial anticipation before the group embarks on their fabled journey to Paris in 1951. MODERN DESIGN MEETS TECHNOLOGY “GOOD DESIGN IS AESTHETIC. GOOD DESIGN IS HONEST. GOOD DESIGN IS LONG-LASTING.” –DIETER RAMS
The 1950s and 60s were decades of rapid change for industrial designers, especially the engineers at Braun, the German company that had already established itself as a pioneer in the electronics market. Harnessing the recent engineering advances from World War II, Artur and Erwin Braun – sons of Max Braun, the company’s founder – were ready to begin creating an entirely new set of products. This SK2b Radio, designed circa 1955, is an example of a household listening device intended for a table, a distinct evolution from the earlier generation of electronics disguised in wooden furniture. That same year, Dieter Rams joined Braun as an architect and interior designer. He mostly worked on exhibition sets, but he quickly became fascinated by electronics. In 1956, he collaborated with Hans Gugelot from the Ulm School of Design to create the SK4 combination radio and record player. The case was metal with wooden side panels, the control knobs were adjacent to the turntable rather than tucked away on the side, and the cover was made of transparent plastic. By uniting a variety of materials with modern design, the SK4 became an industry standard that was immediately replicated by competitors. By 1962, Rams had been appointed the director of design and thus given the opportunity to update the SK4 based on recent developments in transistor technology. Smaller transistors replaced the bulky hot tubes required for clear sound, allowing Rams to create the Audio 1 M Compact Stereo, complete with an entire set of knobs, buttons, and dials next to the turntable. Rams also designed the L45 speaker and TG60 tape recorder to accompany the Audio 1 M on the 606 shelving system, an adjustable shelving unit he had been designing for Vitsoe + Zapf since 1957. Jonathan Ive, vice president of industrial design at Apple and chief designer of the iMac, MacBook Pro, and iPhone, has cited Rams as one of his main influences. Notice the brushed aluminum unibody of the MacBook Pro, offspring of Rams’ ground breaking design that was originally employed in the Audio 1 M, which again separated Braun from its competitors. Both cyclical and ironic, this shimmering grey aesthetic distinguishes Apple from other common, plastic-encased laptops that are usually black, the primary color that Rams used on his Studio 1000 sound system to mark the inception of high fidelity technology. As was expected, black became the industry standard in electronics well into the 21st century, again thanks to Rams. Whether he’s working with record players, calculators, electric shavers, or furniture, Dieter Rams is a true innovator and has become one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. WILLIAM “BILLY” HAINES William “Billy” Haines (1900-1973) devoted his life to good taste and design, a passion that he pursued after starring in his final film in 1934. On and off set, he was a self-proclaimed wisecrack yet to his Hollywood friends he was a charming man of confidence, which made for a smooth transition from the silver screen to the living room interior. He famously remarked, “I can only tell you this – I would rather have taste than either love or money.” After opening his own antique shop on La Brea Avenue, decorating costar Joan Crawford’s home, and renovating and decorating acclaimed director George Cukor’s home, Haines transformed the 10-acre Beverly Hills home of Jack Warner of Warner Brothers into “the most talked-about residence in Los Angeles.” Haines’ design vocabulary – Chinoiserie and Classical objects blended with a modern touch – is clearly represented in the Warner estate. 72 WILLIAM “BILLY” HAINES COFFEE TABLE Studio, circa 1948 17”h x 19.75” x 68.5” Retains impressed gold foil stamp “Leather by Stergis” and “Designed by WM. While Haines was known for his flawless attention to detail and clever taste, he also had a discerning eye for design. As his business flourished in the 1940s and 50s, Haines began designing his own furniture and lamps. In the late 1940s Haines was called upon by F. Hugh Herbert, noted playwright, screenwriter, novelist and director, to furnish and design his Bel Air estate. The Herbert estate included both custom Haines designs, as well as furnishing Haines chose and altered to fit the interior, inciting his duel nature as both a designer and a decorator. Haines’ custom designs included a game table, a coffee table, and a number of custom lamps, which usually made use of existing sculptures or antiques. Always attune to detail, he added the red-lacquered columns (Lot 74) to coordinate with the red in the bases of the pair of Chinese urns. Combining Asian classicism with elegant, functional design, the coffee table (Lot 72) is constructed around a panel from a vintage Japanese coromandel screen inlaid in wood covered in Stergis leather. Haines liked to include intimate tables for gaming or private conversation in most of his interiors. The Stergis leather game table (Lot 73) employs Haines’ trademark unicorn legs and hideaway drink coasters. In addition to his own designs, his rooms also included pieces from contemporary artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Salvador Dali, and Georges Braque. American Abstract Expressionist and Pop artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925-1958) became famous for his Combines he created in the 1950s. Combines, a term Rauschenberg invented to define his mixed media collages, redefine the notion of a collage by granting a different role to commonplace objects. Untitled (Combine) 1958 features oil painting on a Solo coffee cup lid, which is mounted on paper within the artist’s frame. Untitled (Combine) 1958 was originally created for painter and collage artist Ilse Getz-Danes, a close friend of Rauschenberg. Ms. Getz-Danes’ husband, Gibson A. Danes, was chairman of the art department at UCLA from 1952-57, and was also a former dean of the Yale School of Art and Architecture. Towards the end of his career, a close friend showed Rauschenberg this early Combine, and he commented with great affection on his friendship with Ilse during the formative years of his career. He spoke of himself as a young artist working with Leo Castelli in New York, arriving at the gallery one day to find Ilse downhearted because Castelli had just reprimanded her. To lift her spirits, he created Untitled (Combine) 1958, complete with a handmade frame. The work was exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in the 1960s, and has been in a private collection in Los Angeles since the early 1990s. Combine works are exceedingly rare on the market, however, few examples can be found in the collections of MOCA, MoMA, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. CALIFORNIA CRAFT Some of these artists hail from California while others found their way to this creative destination, but all of them share a similar organic style that became California Craft. Defined by natural materials, smooth lines, curved edges, and impeccable craftsmanship, California Craft populated the mid-century modern furniture and sculpture landscape and influenced artists well into the 21st century. Notable California Craft artists include Arthur Espenet Carpenter, Sam Maloof, Gerald McCabe, Bob Stocksdale, and Jan de Swart, who’s puzzle box exhibits his penchant for using wood from uprooted trees washed into the ravine beside his home. Walnut, as opposed to exotic wood, was used primarily because it was readily available and it allowed artists to showcase their craft with a beautiful, natural finish. The Espenet cabinet and Maloof bench represent California Craft traits, combining smooth wood, “rounded-off” edges, and curved legs while maintaining the walnut’s essential qualities. Orginally built in 1948, the Orinda House was a “Usonian” home built by Frank Lloyd Wright in Northern California. As all of Wright’s commissions, the fabled architect designed all of the furnishings to go into the completed project. For this California home, he chose a native Redwood for the cabinetry and free standing units. The home suffered a fire in 1993, and was rebuilt and refurnished. This cabinet is from an area not affected by the damage, and maintains a fine original patina. As with many of Wright’s designs, the pure geometry of the form echoed the overall theme of the individual room it occupied.

PAUL LÁSZLÓ Paul László (1900-1993), celebrated Hungarian architect and designer, created homes of elegance and comfort for his Los Angeles clients. On his ascent to becoming one of the most sought-after designers of the 20th century, he achieved success in Europe as a freelance art director and designer for notable European families. He immigrated to the United States during Hitler’s rise to power and immediately established his presence in Los Angeles by designing Bullock’s Department Store on Wilshire. A decade later in the late 1940s, László built and designed homes for Hollywood’s elite, including Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Fritz Lang, and Barbara Stanwyck. In designing these refined residences, he preferred, almost exclusively, to use existing works from artist Bottega Karin, well-known for large-scale reverse paintings on glass. This decorated screen (lot 238) from the home of Barbara Stanwyck, is a signed mural by Karin that was transformed into a room-dividing screen. The “Paddle Arm” chairs (lot 239) and end table (lot 240) showcase László’s skills as a third generation furniture designer. These pieces emphasize his purpose as a designer, “to give the modern style an ageless importance, to be ahead of my time and yet build a comfortable home.”

The American painter Milton Avery (1885-1965), deliberate and disciplined in his approach to painting yet intensely imaginative, experienced hardship throughout the early years of his life. While working on a Connecticut assembly line as the sole support for his widowed mother and nine family members, he became interested in art and began taking formal drawing courses. In the 1920s, he moved to New York with his wife Sally, where he was given the freedom to develop his Abstract Expressionist approach to painting: “Objects in the subject matter cannot be painted representatively, but they must take their place in the whole design.” He traveled to Mexico in 1946 to continue painting landscapes and seascapes. His wife Sally, who accompanied him on the trip, described his craft in depicting village streets and mountainous grasslands: “He took these ordinary subjects and infused them with a great deal of poetry.” Writer and director Sam Peckinpah, famous for Westerns such as The Wild Bunch, purchased “Pot Vendor” after discovering Avery’s work while filming in Mexico. ÁNGEL BOTELLO Ángel Botello (1913-1986), accomplished painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, achieved international recognition through his wide-ranging talents, styles, and subject matter. After studying and painting at art school in Paris and Madrid, Botello joined the Spanish Civil War as a cartographer. Upon Francisco Franco’s victory in 1939, Botello and his family fled to the Dominican Republic where a burgeoning artist community of locals and European exiles welcomed the talented painter. He achieved success and developed his post-impressionistic style through painting bright tropical landscapes and figures; art critics and dealers deemed him “The Caribbean Gaugin”. In 1953, Botello and his family moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, his home until his death in 1986. As an art pioneer in the country, he opened one of the first art galleries and began painting his three children, his favorite subjects. “Untitled (No. 1781)” and “Untitled (1919)”, more animated in the style of Picasso yet equally as vibrant, express a playfulness and optimism not previously seen in his earlier work. R. CRUMB Founder of the Underground Comix movement of the 1960s, Robert Crumb (b. 1943, usually referred to as R. Crumb), is beloved for his satirical and twisted depictions of American life. Some of his most popular characters are Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural, a cynical and humorous sage with a long white beard who delights in uttering oddball aphorisms. Originally from Philadelphia, Crumb traveled to Cleveland after high school to illustrate greeting cards for the American Greetings Corporation. It was here that his boss described his drawings as “too grotesque,” and according to Crumb, “I was trained to draw ‘cute’ little neuter characters which influenced my technique, and even now my work has this cuteness about it.” It was also in Cleveland where Crumb met the legendary Harvey Pekar, at the time a down-and-out file clerk. They collaborated on the first issues of American Splendor; Pekar wrote the autobiographical and cynical text while Crumb illustrated, resulting in an award-winning partnership that lasted well into the 1980s. Crumb moved to San Francisco and started writing his own comics, including Zap Comix and Weirdo, both vehicles for characters like Mr. Natural as well as his sardonically sexual themes. The first drawing (lot 387)is from an R. Crumb illustrated 10th anniversary edition of Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang, a witty critique of environmental destruction of the American Southwest. Conditions of Sale/Notice to Buyers The following are our “Conditions of Sale” for the items listed in this catalogue to be sold by Modern Auctions, Inc. (L.A. Modern Auctions or “LAMA”). We are acting as an agent on behalf of our consignors.
PAYMENT All sales are final. All sold lots are to be paid for on the day of the sale. We accept cash, bank wire transfers, checks, and Mastercard and Visa (PLEASE NOTE: Credit card payments are accepted only when presented in person and will not be accepted over the phone, fax or e-mail). All payments made by personal checks will be subject to clearance before purchases can be collected. Buyers who have not purchased from Modern Auctions, Inc. (Los Angeles Modern Auctions) previously are asked to provide a method of payment and/or letter of reference from a bank or creditor prior to the auction. Bank wire information is available upon request, please phone (323) 904-1950. If payment is not received by July 6th collection and storage fees will begin incurring.
BUYER’S PREMIUM A buyer’s premium of 25% will be added to the hammer price on all property sold if bids are placed directly with Modern Auctions, Inc. This buyer’s premium can be discounted to 22.5% if payment by cash, check or bank wire is received by July 6th. The buyer’s premium will not be discounted for internet bidding (27.5%) or payment by credit card or if full payment is not received by July 6, 2011. (PLEASE NOTE: Credit card payments are accepted only when presented in person and will not be accepted over the phone, fax or e-mail).
CALIFORNIA SALES TAX Sales tax of 9.75% will be collected on all purchases removed from our premises or delivered within the state of California. Those holding a valid California State Resale License must register before each sale and present their valid resale number. No purchases will be released until all sales tax requirements are satisfied.
ESTIMATES & RESERVES The estimates printed after each lot should be used as a guide only and should not be relied upon as a prediction of final selling prices. Many of the lots offered for sale carry a reserve and are confidential. The reserve is a minimum price at which the seller has agreed to let the auctioneer sell the property.
Absentee/Phone bids are on a first-come, first-served basis; thus, we encourage you to submit your form ASAP. If identical absentee bids are submitted, the earliest received will take precedence. The number of phone lines available is limited so please submit your phone requests early. On all absentee/phone bid forms, please leave a valid credit card number with expiration date; a deposit of 25% may be required for all absentee and phone bids. Please note that we only accept credit card payments in person. For those absentee/phone bidders who can not come in personally to pay, we will only accept either a certified check or wire transfer as a method of payment (see “Payment” notice). The party responsible for submitting the absentee or phone bid is solely responsible for the payment in full of the total invoice. We will not make any changes to an invoice. Should a dispute arise after the sale, our sale records are conclusive. We are not responsible for failure to execute a bid and have the right to reject any bid. We reserve the right to withdraw any property before the sale and shall have no liability whatsoever for such withdrawal. Should an item be withdrawn, the auctioneer will make an announcement at the time the lot would have been put up for sale. In addition, the auctioneer may add lots not previously listed in the catalogue or addendum. If the buyer does not comply with all of the notices to buyers, Modern Auctions, Inc, reserves the right to cancel the sale, hold the defaulting buyer liable for the purchase price and buyer’s premium, retain any deposit, and resell the property privately or at auction without further notice. In the latter, the defaulting buyer will be held responsible for all incurred expenses, such as warehouse and transportation costs, commissions, incidentals, and shall be liable for payment of any deficiency in the purchase price. This is strictly enforced. We reserve the right to assess a late charge of 1.5% of the total purchase price per month if payment is not made in accordance with any of these conditions of sale.
GUARANTEE The authenticity of every item offered for sale is guaranteed. Modern Auctions, Inc. warrants only the authorship of an item (as printed in BLUE type) and does not guarantee the condition, age, or any identifying characteristic used by Modern Auctions, Inc, in any descriptions such as color, method of construction, and type of materials. Any lot using the terms “attributed”, “attribution,” “in the style of,” “in the manner of,” or “after” does not qualify for our guarantee. In addition, the buyer assumes responsibility of reading all addendums and posted corrections to the catalogue prior to bidding.
CONDITION EVERYTHING IS SOLD IN “AS-IS” CONDITION. No statement regarding condition of any item, whether it is made orally at the auction or at any other time or in writing in this catalogue shall be deemed to be a warranty, representation or assumption of liability. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer to inspect all goods prior to the sale. We strongly encourage all bidders to request a condition report on any item before bidding. All electrical items are sold for decorative value only and should be assumed not to be working. All measurements are approximate. COLLECTION AND STORAGE ALL LOTS MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE AUCTION SHOWROOM BY 12:00 PM ON JULY 6TH. All property remaining after July 6th will be removed and stored in an off-site storage facility at the cost of the buyer. Purchases not removed by July 6th will be assessed a daily storage fee of $15 per day per lot. Items in storage are not insured by Modern Auctions, Inc. Unless other arrangements are made and confirmed in writing; the buyer assumes sole responsibility for shipping, packing, insurance, and storage concerns. A list of shippers can be provided upon request.
BIDDING We encourage you to attend the sale in-person. However, if you can not attend in person we offer an “absentee” or phone bidding service. For this service fill out and submit an “Absentee/Phone bid” form. To obtain this form please call (323) 904-1950 or go to our website. We will not execute absentee or phone bid orders unless a signed and completed bid form has been received. All Absentee/Phone bid forms must be received by Saturday, June 25th by 5:00 p.m. (PST) via fax to (323) 904-1954. We encourage you to call after faxing to confirm we have received your bid. We kindly ask that you do not call on the day of the sale to submit bids or to see if your bids were successful. All successful absentee bids should be notified by phone by June 28th. In addition, the auction prices realized will be posted the day after the sale on our website. Do not rely on any auction results (prices realized) unless published on www.lamodern.com or as provided directly by Modern Auctions, Inc.
RESCISSION Should the authenticity of an item be disputed after a sale, the buyer has 90 days from the date of the auction to provide written documentation or conclusive opinion of a mutually agreed upon independent expert, retained at the buyers sole expense, that the item in question is not as stated in the catalogue. In the event of an error, Modern Auctions, Inc. will rescind the purchase contract. Modern Auctions, Inc. will reimburse the buyer for no more than the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium and only after the item is returned to the original point of sale in the condition in which it was sold. Taxes, packing, shipping and storage costs will not be reimbursed. Modern Auctions, Inc. is not liable for any costs, such as experts and attorney’s fees. If the item is authentic, as stated in the Modern Auctions, Inc. catalogue, then the purchaser shall bear Modern Auctions, Inc’s expenses incurred in defense of the allegation, such as attorney’s fees and other costs. The limited right of rescission is only available to the original purchaser from Modern Auctions, Inc. Once the item is resold, then all rights and liabilities of Modern Auctions, Inc. regarding authenticity end. THE PURCHASER’S SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY AGAINST MODERN AUCTIONS, INC. FOR ANY REASON IS THE LIMITED RIGHT OF RESCISSION DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION.
