Roberto Crippa Aligned with the generation of artists who followed closely behind or alongside the Cubist, the Futurist, and the Abstract Expressionist movements, Milan-born painter and sculptor, Roberto Crippa (1921 – 1972), lived during a time of transition and experimentation. While his early work tended towards geometric abstraction, Crippa soon joined a new movement, Spazialismo (or “Spatialism”) alongside fellow artists including Lucio Fontana, Cesare Peverelli, Gianni Dova, and Enrico Donati.
Crippa’s Spirali (1951-52) is a prime example of his gestural spiral paintings, which he made largely between 1949 and 1953. Like his fellow Spatialist painter, Lucio Fontana, Crippa championed compositions that pushed the picture plane outside the flatness of the two-dimensional canvas to create new spaces. Crippa’s Spirali paintings seem to protrude from the flatness of the canvas, thus creating a new dimension, and perhaps peering into the atomic level that was just entering the public imagination.
In 1947, Crippa and his compatriots issued the first of many manifestos of their movement that outlined the ideals of an art that incorporated ideas of science and technology. “We have renounced the practice of familiar art forms and are working to develop a kind of art based on the unity of time and space… We think of art as a sum of physical elements: color, sound, movement, time, and space, brought together in a physical and mental whole. Color, an element of space; sound, an element of time; and movement, unfolding in space and time. These are the foundations of Spatialist art.”

Dave Muller One of the key Los Angeles artists to emerge in the 1990s, Dave Muller established his reputation by independently and anonymously posting hand-painted watercolors publicizing local gallery exhibitions of artists he admired. The designs for these commemorative works were both tributes and sly commentaries, often adding art historical contexts and elaborations to the art being espoused. Muller also frequently staged art events in the spirit of 1960s “Happenings” known as "Three Day Weekends," featuring impromptu exhibitions, art-making, and music. These three works on paper, What Goes On (Sam Durant) (1995), I Keep Waiting for Hendrix to Break Into the Star-Spangled Banner (1994), and I Couldn’t Find a Single Pedestal Chair at the

Barry Flanagan Barry Flanagan (1941–2009), while equally well-versed in draughtsmanship, printmaking, and photography, is primarily known today for his work as a sculptor, most notably his bronze hare sculptures of the early eighties. After studying architecture at Birmingham College of Art and Crafts, with various interludes at different colleges, he eventually found himself in London studying sculpture at the Saint Martin’s School of Art. From the beginning of his career, Flanagan created playfully subversive works that broke with the conventions of sculpture at the time, while injecting his own sensibility and humor into his work. In harkening back to forms and mythologies of antiquity, he became a seminal figure in the 1980s as he pushed the Post-minimal field of sculpture into a new direction.
Studio International in 1967 he wrote: “One merely causes things to reveal themselves to the sculptural awareness. It is the awareness that develops, not the agents of the sculptural phenomena.” His work was featured in the groundbreaking exhibition "When Attitudes Become Form" at Kunsthalle Bern (1969), and he represented Britain in the 1982 Venice Biennale. His bronze hares have also been exhibited in many public outdoor spaces, among them Park Avenue in New York in 1995-96, and Grant Park, Chicago in 1996. His work is held in public collections around the globe including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Tate, London. “Estate of Barry Flanagan.” Estate of Barry Flanagan, barryflanagan.com/.
His early beginnings in sculpture encompassed a wide array of materials— jute sacks, sand, cloth, plastic, clay, and plaster—but he eventually transitioned into the use of more permanent materials such as stone, ceramics, and metals. The three pieces offered in LAMA's June 10, 2018 auction, Miracle in the Cabbage Patch VIII 78 (1978), Two Dog (1978), and Butterfly 10/82 (1982), demonstrate the breadth of interest in sculpture at this crucial point in his career. In an oft-cited quote published in

Vija Celmins Latvian-American visual artist Vija Celmins’ now acclaimed photorealistic drawings and paintings of the natural world can be traced back to her early excursions into painting, utilizing objects found close at hand in her studio space in order to sharpen her powers of perception. Working in California during the mid-1960s, Celmins’ began to depart from the Abstract Expressionist style that marked her early paintings and shifted her focus to still life paintings and drawings. These explorations eventually led to her use of found photographs as source materials. Moving from the three-dimensional to the two-dimensional plane of the photograph, Celmins developed a practice whereby engagement with the natural world is severely mediated by existing imagery that reproduces it, rather than by direct observation. Works such as her 1963 oil on canvas, Untitled (Fish), are notably void of direct human presence, though traces of human intervention and its consequences are never too far from the surface. Her paintings and drawings possess the unsettling suggestion of an evacuated presence, and lie “between intimacy and distance,” as she herself once put it. Though the fish will later serve as her sustenance, her rendering of the fish leaves it floating in some in-between location divorced from our world. Celmins’ distinct still lifes and fantastically distorted landscapes acutely manipulate scale and perspective. Using a rigorously pared-down, monochromatic color palette that favors deep tonal gradations of gray, Celmins’ potent, if austere, compositions push the still life in new directions, raising questions pertaining to the nature of observation, reproduction, and representation. “Vija Celmins.” MoMA, Museum of Modern Art Online, 2018. “Found Images.” Tate, Tate Online, 2018. “Vija Celmins.” ARTIST ROOMS, Tate Online, 2018. “Vija Celmins Learning Resource.” National Galleries Scotland, National Galleries Scotland Online, 2018. Ruth Asawa A native Californian, pioneering artist Ruth Asawa (1926 - 2013) began creating art while detained in Japanese-American internment camps. Born to Japanese immigrants in Norwalk, California, Asawa was no stranger to hard work and the large body of sculptures, public installations, and drawings that she created over the course of her career are testament to her work ethic. One of the most influential modernists of the 20th century, Asawa studied at the avant-garde Black Mountain College, where she received training under Josef Albers and began work on her singular wire sculptures, for which she continues to be widely celebrated to this day. Often referring to her wire sculptures as “drawing[s] in space,” works such as her 1965 Untitled (S.809) explore the complex relationships between objects and the spaces they inhabit. As she explained about her tied wire sculptures: “I started in 1962 when a friend of ours brought a desert plant from Death Valley... I tried to draw it, but it was such a tangle that I had to construct it in wire in order to draw it.” Asawa drew inspiration from a variety of sources—from her childhood drawings in the raked soil left in the wake of her family’s ground leveler, to Mexican basket weavers, translucent insect wings, the teachings of R. Buckminster Fuller, and of course the sprouting forms in the surrounding desert landscapes. This work has not been publicly shown since its exhibition in 1965 at the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum). Other examples of Asawa’s sculpture can be found in the collections of the de Young Museum, San Francisco, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, among others.

William S. Burroughs Primarily known for his sensational novels and loose, albeit reluctant association with the Beat Generation, American writer William S. Burroughs was also an accomplished visual artist who produced a large body of innovative work over the course of his long career. In his capacity as an artist, Burroughs collaborated on a number of important projects with artists of a diverse range of styles, including Keith Haring, George Condo, Robert Rauschenberg, Tom Waits, Philip Taaffe, Ian Sommerville, Antony Balch, Kurt Cobain, Robert Wilson, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Burroughs’ devil-may-care paintings, spoken-word performances, and multi-media collaborations have been just as wildly influential as his equally audacious writings, and continue to impact a wide range of artists working in different media to this day.
Burroughs engaged a range of highly experimental techniques in the creation of his visual works, with collage and montage in particular playing important roles in each of these. An unabashed gun enthusiast, Burroughs began making his now infamous shotgun works in the early 1980s. Savagely punctured through their surfaces with bullet holes, works such as his 1982 Screaming Ghost — formerly owned by Burroughs’ long-time admirer and friend Timothy Leary — are the visual equivalent of Burroughs’ written works, which he often cut up with scissors so as to rearrange and reactivate their original meanings. “It is the function of the artist to evoke the experience of surprised recognition,” Burroughs once said, “to show the viewer what he knows but does not know that he knows.” Burroughs’ richly textured shotgun paintings are as much documentations of craft as they are finished works of art, each equally reveling in the disclosure and celebration of technique.
