Quintessential California Modern artist David Hockney depicted his infatuation with Southern California by capturing the coolness of its unique landscape and culture. The pool naturally emerged as the subject of many of his paintings as it epitomized Los Angeles’ leisure lifestyle. In his biography Hockney expressed his fascination with painting water and finding various mediums to portray it. He stated his method of illustrating water was inspired by Jean Dubuffet’s abstract, textured paintings and Bernard Cohen’s Technicolor spaghetti pictures. In 1964 the British-born Hockney moved to Los Angeles and painted his first swimming pool in the February 1964 painting California Art Collector. The fabricated setting of this painting was a result of many inspirations, except for the swimming pool, which came from a swimming pool advertisement in the Los Angeles Times. His subsequent mediums thus included watercolor, pen and ink and Polaroid photo collages. In the aptly named 1980 lithograph, “Lithograph of Water Made of Thick and Thin Lines and a Light Blue Wash and a Dark Blue Wash”, Hockney approaches his usual theme with the initial child-like wonder he had when first arriving in California by employing simple colors and doodle-like squiggles. This particular Hockney oeuvre continues to inspire viewers to fantasize about the idyllic, easy-going California way of living. Hockney, David. David Hockney by David Hockney. New York: Harry N. Is it an Anteater or a Polar Bear? Gordon Newell designed this sculpture as an Anteater. However, in a publicity photograph taken at the Los Angeles Arboretum, the Anteater was displayed on a concrete pier resembling an iceberg surrounded by water. It was titled in the 1961 Architectural Pottery catalogue as ‘Bear on Flow’. From that point on it was referred to as a Bear and was titled as such in subsequent catalogues.

These artists, although influenced by Classical iconography, were distinctly modern in their approach to design. They used materials such as Lucite and cast aluminum as well as techniques including a new process of casting bronze in a thin shell. Quite aware of their contemporaries’ tendency to reject Classicism, Grosfield-House produced a chest complete with ionic columns and adorned with gold leaf detailing and Spartan helmets made of Lucite, resulting in an ironically modern design.

Corrado Cagli (1910-1976), highly regarded and influential in his time, was an Italian painter from Rome. He employed a variety of styles and techniques, ranging from using oil paint and enamel on canvas to resemble crumpled paper, to blowing pulverized paint onto the canvas to create ambiguous forms. His technique varied as much as his subject matter and influences, which included geometric forms, organic plant growth, historical figures, and his experiences as an Allied soldier in World War II. According to art critics of his day, “Corrado Cagli’s lengthy, untiring experimental work and his ever-keen, ever-genial eclecticism have enabled him to tackle any branch requiring hard study, drive and talent, with never-failing success.” His work has been exhibited in galleries around the world and the painting, “Il Poeta Orientale ,” was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibit 20th-Century Italian Art from American Collections, which traveled to Milan and Rome in 1960. In 1963, each of the Caglis offered here were exibited at the Phoenix Art Museum. Cagli became a master of many mediums and had such prolific output that it is no wonder that he was described as “comparable only to that of the great figures of the Renaissance.”

French artist Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), with his distinct black outlines, angular forms, and solemn landscapes, arrived on the Parisian art scene in 1948 with critical acclaim. Only 20 years old, Buffet received the prestigious Prix de la Critique art award. Throughout the 1950s, Buffet’s output and reputation grew, establishing him as one of the most sought after painters of his day, evidenced by his regular exhibitions in New York and Paris. In 1957, Yale French Studies lauded his style, describing his “scanty scale of shades and their very penury in the total area of the canvas were an innovation.” Buffet’s “Untitled (Still Life with Fish)” – painted in 1950 when he was only 22 – displays this style through a very striking vocabulary of sharp, spiky lines joined to create an uncommon still-life. The Macchia collection, Italian for “spotted,” manifests Dale Chihuly’s love for the sea. His mother informally dubbed these vessels “the uglies” before his friend Italo Scanga baptized them in 1981. This series of maritime-inspired forms are refreshingly small in comparison to his hefty glass installation works, yet large enough to command attention in any room. Chihuly explains that the “cloud-like” inner color amplifies the vibrant outer color akin to the way fog enhances a stained glass window. A third color for the lip of the pieces complements the spotted conch shaped pieces.

Shiro Kuramata is best known for incorporating industrial materials into traditional Japanese designs, which allowed him to infuse his own zen aesthetic into everyday objects. From the Progetti Compiuti series, the PC/3 “Side 1” was first designed in 1970. Here, Kuramata takes a traditional design and gives it more life through undulating curves and a movable base. The PC/3 “Side 1” is composed of black-stained ash. and matte white drawer fronts with brushed steel knobs.

In 1961, various college dormitories and other institutional residencies were outfitted with the Eames Contract Storage unit. Designed with storage space, a bed, and a desk workspace, the ECS was meant “to replace most of the furniture needed in a dormitory.”1 Like many other Eames creations, the unit’s name was reduced to an acronym, which reflects the functional, straightforward design with a high degree of efficiency. These characteristics are exhibited in the details of the unit, which include a fold-up bed, built-in light and tackboard, as well as polished cast aluminum handles. Despite these details, production was limited due to the high quality of the units and a dramatic decline in new dorms as students began living off-campus. Rea Irvin, the first art editor of The New Yorker, is accredited with shaping the magazine’s style, characterized by witty commentary and sophisticated art. At the inception of the magazine, he proclaimed his desire “‘to get the prose of the magazine just like the art.’”1 His most well known character, Eustace Tilley, complete with a monocle and top hat, has become the unofficial mascot for The New Yorker after he was featured on the cover of the first issue in February of 1925. Irvin’s illustrations have graced over 150 covers. His influence is also seen in the magazine’s typeface (known as “Irvin Type”), the design, and layout, creating a sophisticated, iconic look. Much of Irvin’s original work has only recently been displayed publicly for the first time.

In 1935, Irving F. Morrow, Consulting Architect to the Golden Gate Bridge, wrote in his Report on Color and Lighting that “the enormous size of the project and the tremendous scale and dignity of the project” were the two main factors in lighting the bridge1. He understood that in order to properly illuminate the unique and technologically advanced structure, he would have to provide a similarly distinctive lighting design. Morrow wanted the lights on the towers to be dim to imitate a sense of limitless height while the roadway lights were to be non-glare for the passing motorists. To achieve this effect, Morrow chose General Electric 90 watt Low Pressure Sodium Vapor Lamps, which provided a “subtle amber glow”1. In 1937, the magnificent bridge was completed and the lamps were installed, providing an indelible addition to the San Francisco landscape. The lamps were the most modern of their day and they were used until their replacement in 1972. In 1946, while vacationing in the south of France, Pablo Picasso decided to visit Vallauris, a small village known for its collection of potters who had relocated after World War II. He was so entranced by their annual exhibition that he abandoned his summer vacation to work side by side with the Vallauris potters at the Madoura Pottery workshop. He sculpted three figures – a faun and two bulls – and then returned home to Paris. Enchanted by his summertime experiences, he spent the winter sketching designs of Greek mythology, and one year later, he eagerly returned to an open workshop. While learning the craft of the surrounding potters, he imparted his designs to them. The results were beautifully rendered serving platters, pitchers, and vases depicting powerful images of mythological creatures and humans. Due to the influence of Picasso, Vallauris experienced an explosion of popularity and production. The paper-mache statue of Mies van der Rohe was created by students in the architecture department at Cal Poly Pomona as a gift to Craig Ellwood, who was a visiting professor at the school back in the 1970s. Ellwood kept this statue in his office, and when he was clearing out his office, he gave it to our consignor. In 1956, ten years after BMW resumed motorcycle production, they released the R60, a low-compression model that was favored by sidecar drivers. In 1981, Architectural Digest ran a cover story illustrating interior designer Paul Leonard’s Connecticut home. On the cover, nestled in the corner of the living room, sits the Giacomettis’ bronze lamp atop a wooden table. In Leonard’s master bedroom rests Diego Giacametti’s Pedestal Table with Harpies, a curious addition to his rustic home. For over 40 years, Paul Leonard was the exclusive personal interior decorator for famous philanthropists Rachel and Paul Mellon. In addition to decorating the Mellons’ various houses located in Manhattan, Massachusetts, and Antigua, Leonard custom decorated special events for the Mellons, including a luncheon for the Prince and Princess of Wales. As Leonard’s reputation spread, he was commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy to create Christmas trees for the White House as well as decorate the Onassis house on the island of Skorpios1. Leonard acquired the following Giacometti pieces during his 40 years with the Mellons. This table and other designs by Diego were only available for purchase through special order or arrangement while Diego was alive. 1

“I met the artist in 1948 when she was teaching a summer course with Willem at Black Mountain College. We kept in touch thereafter. As anyone who knew her will agree, one could not have had a more entertaining and brilliant guest for dinner. Her EVENT IN A WAREHOUSE was exhibited at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in Manhattan in 1953-54 where I first saw it. When it had not sold, the artist kept it back as one of her favorite works. Just before I moved to California in June 1961, I visited her studio on Lower Broadway to say farewell. My wife asked after that painting, which she remembered so well. Elaine, delighted, brought it forward from concealment and we promptly bought it as a keepsake. Going against the grain of serious political artwork in Mexico during the 1960s, Pedro Friedeberg’s objective was to point out the absurdity in everyday living. The artist’s light-hearted view of life naturally led him to join the neo-Dadaist group, Los Hartos (The Fed Up). Hating functionalism, Friedeberg once said “the house and its objects is supposed to be some crazy place that makes you laugh” rather than a dreary “machine you live in.” Along with Surrealism, Friedeberg also synthesized Early Renaissance, Rococo and Art Nouveau style into his whimsical works. His off-center pieces include meticulously detailed paintings, gilded chairs, tables, couches and “useless objects.” Hands being a consistent theme in his work, he is most famous for the visually amusing Hand & Foot chair.

Millard Sheets, one of the founding members of the “California Scene Painters,” is well known for his murals and paintings. However, Sheets became heavily involved in modern design and architecture when he founded Millard Sheets Designs Company in 1953. His staff, which included architects, engineers, artists, and draftsmen, completed many projects for private residencies, banks, and government offices1. In the late 1950s, his company designed the Scottish Rite Memorial Temple, located on Wilshire and Lucerne in Los Angeles. Sheets himself designed many aspects of the temple, most notably the theatre and an external mosaic depicting the history of temple building. LAMA showroom installation 2010 Roger Darricarrere (1915-84) created this complex installation in 1965 for the Columbia Savings Bank in Los Angeles as a spectacular sunlit ceiling. Darricarrere is considered the modern master of stained glass done in the Dalle de Verre style. He would form Dalle (blocks of glass) and carefully place the pieces in a concrete surround. This particular ceiling measures 36’ x 36’, for a total of nearly 1,300 square feet and is composed of 84 individual panels. While each panel was created to make up a larger design, they can be easily assembled in smaller sections or even used individually as coffee or dining tables. Darricarrere won the medal for best artwork at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York and pioneered the Dalle de Verre style in the United States, helping to popularize the technique.

Payment All sales are final. All sold lots are to be paid for on the day of the sale. We accept cash, bank wire transfers, checks, and Mastercard and Visa (PLEASE NOTE: Credit card payments are accepted only in person and will not be accepted over the phone). All payments made by personal checks will be subject to clearance before purchases can be collected. Buyers who have not purchased from Modern Auctions, Inc. (Los Angeles Modern Auctions) previously are asked to provide a method of payment and/ or letter of reference from a bank or creditor prior to the auction. Buyer’s Premium A buyer’s premium of 22.5% will be added to the hammer price on all property sold if bids are placed directly with Modern Auctions, Inc. This buyer’s premium can be discounted to 20% if payment by cash, check or bank wire is received by October 26th. The buyer’s premium will not be discounted for internet bidding.

Collection and Storage ALL LOTS MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE AUCTION SHOWROOM BY 12:00 PM ON OCTOBER 27TH. All property remaining after October 27th will be removed and stored in an offsite storage facility at the cost of the buyer. Purchases not removed by October 27th will be assessed a daily storage fee of $15 per day per lot. Items in storage are not insured by Modern Auctions, Inc. Guarantee The authenticity of every item offered for sale is guaranteed. Modern Auctions, Inc. warrants only the authorship of an item (as printed in BLUE type) and does not guarantee the condition, age, or any identifying characteristic used by Modern Auctions, Inc, in any descriptions such as color, method of construction, and type of materials.
