John Ferren As a young man, American abstract painter John Ferren studied under an Italian stonecutter in San Francisco. By 1929 he had grown restless in the then-stagnant West Coast art scene and so embarked on a tour of France and Italy to further enrich his practice. Though briefly returning to the States in 1930, Ferren became one of the few early American abstractionists to gain real traction in Paris. He attended several classes at the Sorbonne, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and the Académie Ranson, but resisted any formal course of training, saying that he "literally learned art around the café tables in Paris, knowing other artists and talking" extensively with them. Instead of immersing himself in the American expatriate art community, Ferren associated with the Abstraction-Création, a loose coalition of French and Spanish artists who combated the growing popularity of Surrealism. He soon began working with William Stanley Hayter’s Parisian Atelier 17, a print making workshop where artists such as Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, and Marcel Duchamp had gone to learn new techniques. During his stay in Europe, Ferren experienced firsthand the dynamism of the many interacting movements that defined pre-WWII art.

Disregarding the restraints of post-war painting’s common stylistic adherence, Ferren’s works remained “eclectic and wide ranging.” Together, Source Fiesta (1949), Untitled (1960), and his collection of four drawings provide a small sample of the vast diversity of Ferren’s repertoire. The six pieces were originally gifts from Ferren to his neighbors, Edward and Josefa Kaminski, who were themselves artists.

Following the war, Ferren quickly established himself as a leading voice amongst New York Abstract Expressionists. In 1955 he served as president of The Club, an organization comprised of some of the leading Abstract Expressionist artists of the day. Unlike other major players of the movement, however, Ferren was “unwilling to rely on formalist rigidity.” It was at this point that he began exploring the Taoist and Zen Buddhist ideas that increasingly prompted his study of unity through form. Sergio Camargo: Rhythms of Chaos and Order In 1948, after studying at the Academia Altamira in Buenos Aires, the Brazilian sculptor Sérgio Camargo spent two years in Paris pursuing philosophy at the Sorbonne. Through the brief mentorship of Constantin Brâncusi, Camargo began producing bronze female forms that erred toward abstraction. Upon returning to Rio de Janeiro in 1950, his figures became more explicitly abstract under the influence of Brazilian Constructivists who investigated geometric mass through concrete fabrications. Camargo returned to Paris in 1961 and began to associate with major figures from the Op art and kinetic art movements. In 1964, he participated in the ”Mouvement II“ show at the Galerie Denise René, which had attracted international fame for championing Op art a decade earlier when many other institutions disregarded the movement as a novelty. Denise René’s groundbreaking 1955 exhibition, “Le Mouvement,” featured monumental artists such as Victor Vasarely, Alexander Calder and Marcel Duchamp. It was during this period that Camargo first discovered the method for his iconic monochromatic relief sculptures, such as Untitled (Relief No. 261) (1969). While creating a traditional mold of his hand, Camargo was taken by the range of possibilities that lay on the outside of the plaster cast where his fingers protruded. Though typically discarded, it was the external plaster that offered the “rhythm of contraction and expansion” that he had been searching for. This breakthrough was followed by a similar revelation when he cut a slice out of an apple and noticed that the shadows elicited by the incision allowed the physicality of the object to continually change based on the many angles he could adopt while looking at the piece of fruit. He debuted the first relief resulting from these encounters at the Paris Biennale in 1963 and was awarded the International Sculpture Prize. At the same show, members of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) demonstrated their collective “environmental experience,” Primer Laberinto. Camargo began working with GRAV that same year. During his involvement with the group, Camargo continued to test the relationship between light and mass, using his original method as a “language” through which he could explore modes of artistic communication. While Camargo’s role in GRAV has been neglected by many sources, the evidence of his participation is clear in the ways that his works rely on the core philosophies developed by the group.

Victor Vasarely, Julio Le Parc, and François Morellet, among several others, started GRAV in 1960 with the goal of establishing a scientific method of sorts to challenge the cultural glorification of the artist as an individual. They connected this type of artistic elitism with popular complacency towards anti-democratic political practices. Though at the time “France was not hospitable to geometric abstraction,” some members were greatly motivated by their “study of concrete art in Brazil.” At the outset, GRAV rejected subjective authorship by creating art as a collective, describing themselves as “more a group of paintings than a group of painters.” In a more nuanced fashion, the formal qualities of their pieces displaced the one-way conversation that was expected in the traditional painting-viewer interaction. Instead of informing or instructing the viewer through their works, GRAV prioritized genuine dialogue with their audience. Their works included light installations, wall reliefs, and mobile elements that presented “games” to the viewer. This insistence on participatory practice distinguished not only GRAV, but Camargo, from the broader Op art movement. Like other GRAV members, Camargo’s solution to the time-old artistic question of space and movement was simply to create uncertainty. His works simultaneously present “fullness and emptiness, order and chaos.” According to one 1966 catalogue, Camargo’s reliefs offer a “process of [visual] reasoning” in their rhythms, disorienting enough to prompt the viewers themselves to take on “the act of choosing,” to take on “the creative act.” His white cylindrical forms mechanically filter “the way in which light and space enter the work,” but the actual content of the piece is a matter of highly “personal discovery.” Because like Camargo’s apple, the physical work is subject to innumerable perspectives, angles, and conditions, the relief’s output is as much a product of the viewer’s input as it is of the artist’s. Ken Price Born in Los Angeles, Ken Price had a quintessential California childhood, spending most of his days surfing at the beach. As a teenager Price already identified as an artist, taking music lessons with the likes of jazz giant Chet Baker and art classes at the Chouinard Art Institute. After graduating with a B.F.A. from the University of Southern California in 1956, Price studied briefly at the Los Angeles County Art Institute (now the Otis College of Art and Design). As a graduate student at the Art Institute, Price’s artistic identity sprung from the revolutionary ideas of ceramic artist, Peter Voulkos. Price’s education leading up to that point had strictly enforced the boundaries of proper artistic mediums, but Voulkos fervently dissolved the established division between fine-art and craft. During this period, the young artist drew inspiration from the experimental zeitgeist of the 1950s in which Asian philosophies, free-form jazz, and Abstract Expressionism turned tradition on its head. Price often employed heavy lacquers and enamels used in industrial manufacturing to produce deeply gestural sculptures that would eventually provoke a revolution in sculpture as a whole.

working on in the mid-1980s. This series, which includes Groota, presents a significant shift in Price’s process as he began using acrylic paints instead of traditional glazing. This development allowed Price to further explore his growing interest in the power of color.

Price stretched the definition of sculpture by confronting the colonialist and often sexist prejudice that pigeonholed clay works as pure craft. When Price’s work began to attract significant attention from the art world, critics were quick to compare him to sculptors such as Picasso and Brâncusi, who experimented with the ‘lesser’ material. Defying their predictions, Price further aggravated purist sensibilities when he began to celebrate and adopt traditional Mexican pottery techniques, that had long been excluded from ‘artistic’ study.

Though many of his works explore “the damp undersides of things,” the series of geode-like works seem to modify Price’s formula. Rather than revealing the strangeness that might lay beneath a domesticated facade, the sculptures feature clean, sophisticated lines that emerge from the primal texture of an untamed shell. While Price resisted ascribing meaning to his works, the striking interaction in this composition reflects the quasi-political subtext of his career. He insisted that moving his slick geometry “to the inside” was not calculated or “strategic,” but nevertheless this departure proposes a compelling conceptual transition.

Though Price’s early series of ceramic cups represents a small episode in his greater body of work, he continued to explore the fundamentals of “the container” shape. Holland Cotter of the New York Times observed that “containment itself, put under psychological pressure, became a recurrent subject of Price’s.” The artist’s career-long investigation of the relationship between interiority and exteriority becomes particularly acute in works like Groota (1985). The tensions perfectly articulate art/craft and interior/exterior in the series of two-piece clay sculptures that Price began

Described as a “collision of raw and refined surfaces,” Price’s modernist geodes feature rough and organic, opalescent exteriors that are dramatically incised, exposing crisp and “highly polished” plains of pure, hyper-saturated color. Price admitted that even when he didn’t intend for them to be, his works are inherently carnal. In a 2007 interview he said, “my work has just evolved into these naturally erotic forms.” The sensuality of Groota is most compelling in the dialogue between the two elements of the sculpture. In addition to the male and female coding of the slender cylindrical piece and its larger vessel-like companion, the natural curve of each of the structures reflect one another. The pieces are almost magnetically drawn together by their complementary shapes.

Carole Feuerman Carole Feuerman’s signature bathers are often referred to as “everyday goddesses.” First debuting the series at the Basel art fair of 1979, Feuerman reimagined the classical image of Venus emerging from the sea in her hyperrealistic sculptures. Feuerman has come to be internationally regarded as a master of technique. The magnitude of her works is a direct result of her acute sensitivity to and control over her materials, ranging from steel, bronze, and resin, to more “unconventional media.” Despite establishing a successful career in commercial illustration, Feuerman was drawn to sculpture by the wider range of expression that the medium offered. Her work joins the figure sculpture tradition of hyperrealist pioneers such as Duane Hanson and John de Andrea, but yields a very different pathos. Rather than addressing broad social issues, Feuerman’s themes are highly personal and sentimental. Where the works of her predecessors are often “ironic or confrontational,” her portraits are “lightheartedly outreaching.” One scholar notes that she replaces the “simple gloss on American social behavior” and the “detached disdain” championed by so many of her contemporaries, with an intense admiration for her subjects. Feuerman’s bathers and swimmers are highly idealized but resist the voyeuristic invitations of traditional female representations. While de Andrea’s women are “more objects than subjects,” Feuerman’s women turn away from the male-gaze, closing “their eyes in introspective ecstasy.” Reflecting changing attitudes towards mental health and an increased cultural awareness of ‘total wellness,’ the idealized physicality of her figures serves as a metaphor for “strength, survival, and balance.” It’s not about how attractive the woman is, but about “how good she feels.” Again diverging

from the canon, Feuerman prioritizes the sensation of the moment that she captures rather than the ‘realness’ of its rendering. In this sense, she uses hyperrealism as a vehicle as opposed to an exhibition. Feuerman often names her bathers after islands. This not only characterizes them as independent, but further articulates the isolation of the exact instant that she chooses to “freeze.” As “the water beads up on the swimmer’s glowing arms and shoulders” there is a singular impression of cleansing and invigoration that arises as she breaks through the water. It’s precisely this treatment that preserves the agency of Feuerman’s subjects. By chasing the “tactile rather than visual,” Owen Findsen writes, Feuerman allows her characters to be “totally involved” in their own narrative; we share their “exuberance,” but “we do not invade [their] privacy.” While many of her sculptures are complete portraits, as is the case for Bibi on the Ball (2015), Feuerman also utilizes fragmented images. Sculptures like Little Islamorada (1997), reveal only the most essential parts of the entire picture. Feuerman welcomes the audience to fill in the rest of the story with their own imagination. She argues that a piece is most successful when the viewer is inspired to access their personal notion of the sensation and import their own details of the experience. This, Feuerman says, is “a way I can make people think for themselves.”

Yuskavage, a graduate of the Yale School of Art, has been the subject of six international solo exhibitions and is reported to be one of a handful of female artists whose works bring over a million dollars. Over the past three decades, the complexity of her figurative paintings has stirred much controversy. Critics and collectors alike are quick to toss in the word ‘soft-porn’ when discussing her work. Where some artists would rebuke this connotation and defend the sanctity of high art, Yuskavage savors the agitation. She says that “the taste” of her work is like smoked salmon, coffee, or cigarettes: “at first it's disgusting but then you can't get enough of the flavor.” A dedicated student of the ‘old masters,’ Yuskavage is captivated by “the binary pull of the sacred and the profane” within their tradition. She says that she was drawn to the female nude early in her career, because the subject “has played such a massive role in art since the start of art history” and yet “women don’t paint women, women don’t paint nudes.” In 2016, the Australian arts and culture magazine, Vault, was made to censor their cover featuring Yuskavage’s Brood (2005-2006). One journalist who covered the incident pointed out that if the magazine had used “Manet's famous nude, Olympia” no one “would bat an eyelid.” While Yuskavage’s subject matter challenges the male-dominated canon, many critics charge the artist with irresponsibly perpetuating conventions of exploitation. Some attempt to valorize her practice by projecting irony onto her characters, but Yuskavage refuses to engage in conversations on the merits of her feminism. Much to the chagrin of the current culture, which insists on art supplying “understanding and resolution,” Yuskavage “fights tooth and nail to keep things open, unresolved, [and] complicated.” Citing particular admiration for the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Yuskavage says that she does not want to be “the kind of person or artist who proselytizes,” but instead, the type who reveals their own “myriad of internal conflicts.” If her works bring up questions of female representation, then it is only to explore the aspects of misogyny that she herself has absorbed as an active member of our current society.

From the time she was young girl, Yuskavage understood paintings as portals. “The work carries markers of the artist’s inner life,” she says, “art is a seance.” Yuskavage maintains a highly sophisticated notion of the art experience and imbues her practice with great philosophical depth, something Jarret Earnest refers to as her sincere “belief in art.” Yuskavage places her characters in fantastical scenarios and atmospheres that are always right on the cusp of existence but never quite accessible in the real world. The artist credits her affinity for the supernatural to her Catholic upbringing which countered the boredom of “brick and mortar” existence with a “handy” faith in “the things you can’t see and can’t prove.” She never seeks to represent a real person or a real place but rather to actually create them on the canvas; she wants the paintings themselves to be real. To execute this lofty phenomenon Yuskavage turns again to the old masters. She believes that “formalism and feelings have a perfect marriage.” While classical visual symbols are anchored to very specific times and places, Yuskavage argues that the masters’ formal codes can be understood by almost anyone. Color specifically, in her opinion, transcends context. She has become particularly enamoured with the 16th century technique known as cangiantismo, in which a rainbow effect is created under translucent shades of gray. The code has traditionally been used to communicate transcendence and divinity. For Yuskavage, it conveys all things supernatural. She refers to her colors as “characters” in her scenes, who consecrate the canvas. Yuskavage investigates a “painterly transubstantiation” in which her “imagination is made manifest...a promise [is] made flesh.”

Italian sculptor Enzo Plazzotta began attending the Accademia di Brera in Milan in the late 1930s. With the guidance of Francesco Messina and Giacomo Manzù, Plazzotta began investigating the power of movement and the human body through traditional bronze casting techniques. His studies were soon interrupted by his nation’s involvement in WWII. Upon returning from his first tour of service in North Africa, Plazzotta rejected the Fascist regime and joined the resistance. Though he was imprisoned and nearly transferred to the Mauthausen concentration camp, Plazzotta escaped to Switzerland where he continued to aid the Allies. Following the war he was commissioned by the Italian Committee for National Liberation to create a piece that represented “the spirit of rebellion.” In 1947, he presented the work to the British Special Forces in London, as a symbol of unity and cooperation. During this trip, Plazzotta grew very fond of London, and so decided to stay and open a commercial art agency specializing in Italian imports. It was not until the early 1960s that Plazzotta returned to sculpture with any consequence. Reigniting his early fascination with

movement, Plazzotta became well-known for his portraits of ballerinas, and modeled some of the 20th century’s most famous dancers including Nadia Nerina, David Wall, and Isadora Duncan. Throughout his career, Plazzotta remained committed to classical form and emulated Beaux-Arts figuration. While enjoying commercial popularity, he received much intellectual pushback due to his rejection of “the anti-representational conventions of modernity.” Despite this controversy, critics never questioned his technical accomplishments. His distinct ability to construct light, energized figures that seemingly defy the physical weight of their materials, has always been beyond reproach. Today, Plazzotta’s works are held in many internationally renowned collections including The Vatican, The Hermitage (Lausanne), and The Queensland Art Gallery.
