Perché una mostra di Gaetano Pesce all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles?

Il mandato dell’Istituto è di diffondere la cultura italiana nel paese ospite in tutte le sue espressioni promuovendo l ’e c c e l l e n z a i t a l i a n a n e l mondo, con particolare attenzione all’architettura e al design contemporaneo così apprezzati in California.

In questa prospettiva l’Istituto presenta la prima mostra nell’Ovest americano di prototipi, disegni, pezzi unici e documentazione audio e video di una delle personalità più orginali e poliedriche del nostro tempo: Gaetano Pesce.

Architetto, artista e designer con base a New York, ha realizzato significativi progetti di architettura, urbanistica, design di

interni, design industriale ed editoriale. Ha firmato progetti pubblici e privati (residenze, giardini ed uffici) negli USA, in Europa, in America Latina ed in Asia. Formatosi presso l’università IUAV di Venezia con Carlo Scarpa ed Ernesto Rogers, nel 1962 intraprende la carriera di designer collaborando con B&B Italia, Cassina, Bernini, Meritalia e Knoll International.

Le sue opere fanno parte delle collezioni permanenti dei maggiori musei del mondo: dal MoMA al Metropolitan di New York, dal Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra, alla Triennale di Milano e al Centre Pompidou di Parigi, che nel 1996 ha ospitato una memorabile restrospettiva dei suoi lavori. Why an exhibition of the work of Gaetano Pesce at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura of Los Angeles?

The mission of the Istituto is to promote Italian culture in the host country in all its expressions. The Istituto highlights Italian excellence in the world with a particular focus on contemporary architecture and design, both of which are deeply appreciated in California.

It is from this perspective that the Istituto presents the first exhibition in the Western United States of prototypes, drawings, production models, video and audio of one of the most brilliantly eccentric and versatile personalities of our time: Gaetano Pesce. Based in New York, this architect, artist and designer is well-known for his significant architecture and urban planning

designs as well as for his interior, industrial and publishing design projects. He has designed public and private projects (residences, gardens, and offices) in the USA, Europe, Latin America and Asia. He studied at IUAV University in Venice with Carlo Scarpa and Ernesto Rogers and in 1962 began his design career with Cassina; subsequently working with B&B Italia, Bernini, Meritalia, and Knoll International, among many others.

His works are included in the permanent collections of the most important museums in the world, from MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; from the Milan Triennale to the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which in 1996 presented a memorable retrospective of his oeuvre. Pesce has also taught

L’istituto ha scelto quali interlocutori per questa inedita iniziativa lo Hammer Musem e curatori quali John Geresi e Peter Loughrey - senza i quali questa mostra non sarebbe stata possibile - nonchè B&B Italia, Cassina e Meritalia, per ripercorrere le principali tappe della carriera cinquantennale del genio veneziano, valoriz-

zando costantemente la proficua interazione tra impresa e cultura.

In questo contesto hanno aderito anche le prestigiose riviste specializzate Abitare, A z u r e Ma ga z i n e e D o m u s nell’intento di dare un’ampia risonanza, anche europea, ad uno degli eventi più originali concepiti da questo Istituto.

Conceived by the Istituto, this exhibition will be promoted throughout North America and Europe, thanks to its promotion by leading architecture and design publications such as Abitare, Azure, and Domus.

Inaugurated with a lecture

by Gaetano Pesce at the nearby Hammer Museum, this show represents a significant step forward toward the goal of transforming the Istituto into the premier showcase of contemporary Italian design in California.

A differenza di quanto avviene nella valutazione della maggior parte degli oggetti del design, in quelli progettati da Gaetano Pesce entra in gioco precocemente - prima ancora dell’annoso quesito “formafunzione” – quello del “gusto”: un gusto talmente lontano dalla consuetudine, dalla banalità, dai canoni consumistici, per cui nuove costanti vengono ad ordirsi e a dominare l’oggetto.

Il problema della singolarità di certi materiali plastici, la loro “coloritura”, la trasparenza e insieme la consistenza, spesso “plastica” degli stessi, fanno sì che il conformismo razionalista e “benpensante” venga immediatamente stravolto; dando luogo in compenso ad una carica inventiva che provoca un’immediata reazione positiva (o talvolta negativa)

nell’osservatore. Ebbene è proprio qui che si rivela la straordinaria potenzialità della sua creazione e che si spiega anche il perché della sua rivolta contro l’imperativo della “serialità assoluta”, il perché della analogia tra il progetto del mobile o dell’oggetto, e del sincretismo totale tra progetto e invenzione artistica. Sicché – a differenza di quanto di solito accade – non dobbiamo chiederci se si tratti o meno di “arte”, come tanto spesso viene stoltamente discusso senza tenere nessun conto dei parametri del gusto. Il lungo cammino che ha portato Pesce dall’architettura studiata a Venezia (e la presenza di Scarpa indubbiamente era stata positiva) alla partecipazione al gruppo artistico “N” e ad altre formazioni analoghe come il “Gruppo Zero” e il “Radical Design”, non è

Contrary to customary reviews of design, the issue of “taste” emerges much earlier than that of “shape-function” in Gaetano Pesce’s creations.

Such taste is so distant from the traditions, banalities, and norms of consumerism that it generates new object-dominating constants. The peculiarity of certain plastic materials, their coloration, transparency and consistency which is often “plastic,” immediately revolutionizes conventional and rationalist conformism. As a result, a creative impulse is generated, causing a sudden positive reaction (or at times negative) in the viewer. This very moment reveals the extraordinary potential of Pesce’s creation, the reason behind his opposition to mass production, the parallel between furniture

and object design, and the complete syncronism between project and artistic invention.

Thus, contrary to usual customs, we should not wonder whether this is “art,” as it is often foolishly debated, without considering the parameters of taste. Pesce’s long journey is nothing but a series of discoveries and inventions, from his architectural studies in Venice (with the undoubtedly positive presence of Carlo Scarpa) to his participation in art groups such as “N,” “Gruppo Zero,” and “Radical Design”; from accepting the randomness of many artistic sectors to acknowledging the “uniqueness” of serial objects; from the creation of today’s famous prototypes such as “Chador Lamp,” “New York Sunset” (1990), “Sansone” table for Cassina, “Bautta” (1990) in wool felt and polyester to the

che un seguirsi di scoperte e di invenzioni; dall’accettazione d’un principio di aleatorietà per molti settori artistici, a quello di ammissibile “unicità” dell’oggetto di serie; alla realizzazione di alcuni prototipi ormai celebri come la “Chador Lamp”, il “tramonto a New York” (1990), il “Sansone” per Cassina, la “Bautta” (1990) (quest’ultima in feltro di lana e poliestere) e tutta

la serie dei “Feltri” e degli “Up”.

Per non parlare dei moltissimi oggetti – spesso bizzarri e inconsueti – come la “Elephant Lamp”, la “Baby Crosby Chair” e ancora: vasi, anelli, gioielli ecc.

Naturalmente molte di queste creazioni hanno suscitato e susciteranno proteste da parte degli assertori della serialità a tutti i costi e della monotonia cromatica e formale dell’oggetto creato in

This is not to mention the innumerable -often unusual and bizarre - objects such as “Elephant Lamp,” “Baby Crosby Chair,” as well as vases, rings, jewelry, etc. It goes without saying that many of these creations raised and will raise protests among the strong supporters of seriality/mass production, chromatic and formal monotony

of serial objects. Recently, it has been erroneously attempted to create objects of so-called “Art Design” at all costs, i.e., objects designed under the false pretense of uniqueness, in order to be expensive. In this case, the object’s uniqueness lies in its manufacturing process and materials used, which contribute to that object’s randomness charm and “sensory ambiguity.”

(“Alchimia”, “Metamemphis”) e anche più recenti tentativi di affidare a pittori e scultori l’ideazione di oggetti di serie sono tristemente falliti; nel caso di alcuni dei più insoliti prodotti di Pesce, abbiamo la migliore prova che possono davvero esistere ed essere prodotti, tanto “oggetti decorativi” (nel senso migliore della parola), quanto mobili e altri prodotti di serie, la cui trasformabilità e modificabilità permette una sostanziale diversificazione.

In spite of past (“Alchimia” and “Metamemphis”) and recent failed attempts to entrust painters and sculptors with object design, Pesce’s most unusual creations clearly show that it is possible to give life to “decorative objects” (in the best sense of the word), furniture, and other serial objects, whose ability to transform and modify allows for substantial diversification.

Veramente da tanti anni conosco e ammiro le grandi ipotesi di Gaetano Pesce, questo designer visionario così carico di energia.

Il suo modo totalizzante di concepire il design considerandolo come “arte in sostituzione dell’arte” è fra le più futuribili proposte che oggi si possano immaginare. Ed ogni sua mossa, compiuta in ogni parte del mondo, desta sempre la meraviglia del gioco inaspettato, ma necessario.

I have known and admired Gaetano Pesce's great creations for many years. He's such a vigorous and visionary designer. His comprehensive way of conceiving design as "art replacing art" is among today's most achievable innovations.

La serie delle Sedie Pratt e’ stata a lungo ritenuta come una delle creazioni piu’ emblematiche della longeva e prestigiosa carriera di Gaetano Pesce. La serie fu concepita nel 1982, quando Pesce insegnava a New York, all’Istituto Pratt di Brooklyn, scuola di architettura arte e design che era stata fondata sulla convinzione che gli studenti potessero apprendere il “mestiere” attraverso l’ uso consapevole della manualita’.

La filosofia che sottende alle Sedie Pratt, dove si combinano arte, sapienza artigianale e materiali industriali, si accorda perfettamente sia con i principi della storia di Pratt, sia con la personale visione del design di Pesce. Una volta l’architetto veneziano ha dichiarato “il design e’ un processo ed un’attivita’ molto importante per me. La

questione è comprendere il significato del design e nel contempo il significato dell’arte.

L’arte ha sempre avuto finalita’ pratiche, ancor prima dell’arte romantica del XIX secolo. L’arte e’sempre stata un prodotto, in generale … concreto, realizzato per motivi religiosi, o per ricordare una persona … una citta’, dunque con la Sedia Pratt ho cercato di percorrere questa strada… [La Sedia Pratt] è un esempio di cosa sia l’arte e di cosa sia il design. Il design è… piu’ complesso dell’arte. L’arte e’ pura espressione culturale, mentre il design e’ espressione culturale con una dimensione di funzionalita’ ed utilita’”. 1 L’idea della serie era chiara: Pesce era interessato ad indagare quel territorio informe sospeso tra arte e disegno industriale creando una serie

Gaetano Pesce’s Pratt Chair series has long been regarded as one of the most masterful creations in his long and storied career. Conceived in 1982 when Pesce was teaching at the Brooklyn, New York-based Pratt Institute, a school for architecture, art, and design that was founded on the principle that students could learn trades through the skillful use of their hands. The philosophy behind Pesce’s Pratt Chairs, the ultimate combination of art, handcraft, and industrial materials, perfectly fit within the ethos of Pratt’s history as well as within Pesce’s personal stance on the design arts. He once remarked that the design was “a very important process and work for me. The subject was the meaning of design and the meaning of art in our time. So art was always,

before the Romantic art of the last century, practical. Art was a product in general...always practical, for religion, reason, or for remembering a person...a city, so with the Pratt Chair I tried to go through this story...So it is a kind of example of what is art and what is design. Design is more....complex than art. Art is just a cultural expression and design is a cultural expression and a function and utility.” 1 The concept for the series was straightforward; Pesce aimed to explore the amorphous territory between fine art and industrial design by creating a series of nine “original” chairs, which, while made in the same molds, would each be unique due to the manipulation of materials by the worker during the production process. The idea for a “series of originals”

“A lungo”, ha affermato , “[ho pensato] che i materiali del futuro fossero femminili, diversamente dai materiali del passato che nella mia mente [erano] maschili, rigidi, inflessibili etc. I materiali del futuro per me sono flessibili, traslucidi, elastici, colorati e cosi’ con [questa] sedia… ho avuto modo di comprendere questi materiali”.2 Con le Sedie Pratt, Pesce ha saputo sfruttare le innovazioni tecnologiche delle plastiche termoindurenti e raggiungere l’obiettivo di creare prodotti

di design unici ed artigianali ma nel contempo seriali.

Gia’ dal 1984 Pesce aveva sviluppato l’intera serie di forme e le relative simbologie estetiche.3 Le forme variavano da quella puramente scultorea e priva di struttura (Sedia n.1), a quella scomodamente rigida (sedia n.9). Il processo di lavorazione di Pesce per le Sedie Pratt – il lento confluire del poliuretano negli stampi per un periodo di tempo di 4 o 5 ore – permetteva variazioni di densita’ strutturale e di traslucidita’ in ogni singolo pezzo. I simboli assolvevano la duplice funzione di rafforzare la struttura di certe aree vulnerabili e di manifestare lo stato d’animo del designer su temi che spazioano dalla sua identita’ e sopravvivenza , al suo interesse per la geometria e altre proprieta’ spaziali.

was first explored by Pesce in the late 1960s. He has said, “a long time I [have thought] that the materials of the future are feminine and in opposite of the material of the past that in my mind [are] masculine, rigid, nonflexible, etc. The materials of the future for me are flexible, translucent, elastic, colorful and so with [this] chair...that was a way for me to understand those materials.”2 With the Pratt Chairs, he was able to take advantage of technological advances in thermosetting plastics to truly achieve his goal of creating oneof-a-kind handcrafted, yet serially produced, functional designs.

By 1984, Pesce had developed the full series of forms and their attendant decorative program of symbols. 3 The forms ranged from the purely sculptural and structureless (chair #1) to the

uncomfortably rigid (chair #9).

Pesce’s process for making the Pratt Chairs - the slow pouring of the polyurethane into molds over a period of four to five hours - allowed for the variation of structural density and translucency in the individual pieces.

The symbols ser ved a dual function; both as structural reinforcements for certain vulnerable areas as well as a manifestation of the state of mind of the designer on subjects varying from his own identity and survival to his interest in geometr y and other spatial properties.

The ultimate power of Gaetano Pesce’s Pratt Chairs lies in the fact that they successfully operate on numerous levels beyond their beauty and innovative materiality. As an article in Domus published shortly after the introduction of the series asked,

Un articolo di Domus pubblicato poco dopo la produzione delle sedie si chiedeva: “Fino a che punto puo’ arrivare il controllo della funzione sulla forma?

Dove si trova l’incerto confine fra ar te e disegno industriale, sperimentazione e produzione, gioia e fatica?”4 Le sedie di Pratt rispondono a queste e ad altre domande.

“Where exactly does the control of function over form reach its limits? Where exactly is the unmapped watershed between art and industrial product, experimentation and production, joy and toil?”4 Pesce’s Pratt Chairs answer these questions and more.

POSTFAZIONE

Ciò che resta del talento surrealista, ciò che è ancora vivo, prima di spirare con lei, nel sapere viva Dorothea Tanning, lo ritroviamo oggi in Gaetano Pesce, impropriamente ritenuto un designer. È un’autocertificazione che viene dallo stesso Pesce, più chiuso nella definizione di quanto non lo siano le sue opere. Ma è solo una questione formale. Pesce afferma: “Il design e’ molto più complesso dell’arte.

L’arte è una pura espressione culturale, mentre il design è una espressione culturale con una dimensione di funzionalità e utilità. Proprio nell’occasione di questa mostra a Los Angeles è venuto a liberarlo Alessandro Mendini con una lampeggiante definizione che restituisce Pesce alla sua dimensione reale, e all’Arte tutta la sua grandezza.

Di Pesce Mendini scrive: “il suo modo totalizzante di concepire il design consideran-

dolo come <<arte in sostituzione dell’arte>> è fra le più futuribili proposte che oggi si possano immaginare”. Dunque, Pesce non è né architetto né designer.

Resta, per temperamento e per carattere, un inguaribile avanguardista, un rivoluzionario per necessità. Quello che Dino Gavina avrebbe chiamato un “sovversivo” . Per Pesce, alle origini della modernità non c’e’ Picasso ma Duchamp. Egli persegue il genio della diversità, della disuguaglianza, della irregolarità, che e’ tipico dell’arte ed è l’opposto dell’industria. Il suo obiettivo è rendere riproducibile l’irriproducibile; rendere unico il multiplo, ribaltando il principio della produzione industriale.

Così, nello schema rigido del design, che presuppone la moltiplicazione dell’identico, introduce il concetto di “malfatto”. Con ciò riabilita la mano rispetto alla macchina. Il principio originario

This is a self-definition that comes from Pesce himself, and the word limits him far more than his works do. But it is only a question of formality. Pesce asserts: “Design is much more complex than art.

Art is pure cultural expression, whereas design is cultural expression with a dimension of functionality and utility.”

On the occasion of this exhibition in Los Angeles, Alessandro Mendini has come to the rescue with an electrifying definition that restores Pesce to his true dimensions, and restores to Art all of his greatness. Mendini writes of Pesce: “his all-encompassing manner of conceiving design, considering it as ‘art

replacing art’, is among the most forward thinking ones we can imagine today.” Thus Pesce is neither architect nor designer.

He remains, by temperament and character, an incurable avant-gardist, a revolutionary by necessity. He is what Dino Gavina would have called a “subversive”.

For Pesce, the origin of modern art is not Picasso but Duchamp.

He’s a follower of the genius of diversity, dissimilarity, irregularity, all qualities typical of art and the opposite of industry. His aim is to render reproducible the irreproducible, to make the multiple unique, overturning the founding principle of industrial production.

Thus, he introduces into the rigid scheme of design, which presupposes multiplication of identical units, the concept of malfatto [imperfectly made].

With this gesture he reasserts the hand at the expense of the machine. The founding principle

dell’arte è nell’opera fatta a mano che conserva il calore dell’anima che l’ha espressa; nel design prevale il freddo, il pensiero, non la mano. In questo, pur restando Pesce, ricorda l’artista Oldenburg. Lo mostrano bene le sedie Pratt. Osserva Cindi Strauss: “ Creando una serie di nove sedie <<originali>> che, sebbene realizzate con gli stessi stampi, fossero ognuna diversa dall’altra a seconda della manipolazione dei materiali o del processo di lavorazione, Pesce era interessato a indagare quell’incerto confine fra Arte e Disegno Industriale”.

Per Pesce il design deve negare se stesso, smettere di creare oggetti tutti uguali, sporcarsi, contaminarsi, perdere il vantaggio della velocita’ della catena di produzione per guadagnare il piacere della contemplazione, tipica dell’arte. Ma le opere d’arte non si possono toccare, sono feticci. E gli oggetti

di Pesce si possono toccare, manipolare, maltrattare. Usare.

Odorare. Un giorno, forse, anche mangiare. Immaginerà Pesce una sedia di zucchero o di cioccolata. “Consumare è un modo per conoscere. I Paesi più evoluti sono quelli che possono consumare, e quelli che sono esclusi da questo processo non riescono a evolversi”. E qui c’è un vantaggio nel prodotto di design rispetto all’opera d’arte: perché una sedia di Pesce si può anche buttare via. Un dipinto di Dorothea Tanning no. Ma c’è un momento in cui anche il prodotto di design diventa prezioso e risulta impossibile disfarsi di un tavolo di Mollino o di una sedia di Breuer, divenuti rari o prodotti in numero limitato.

Moltiplicando la casualità Pesce cerca di superare questo rischio.

Consumare, come l’oggetto di design chiede (e anche essere consumati), non vuol dire essere costretti a ripetere atti identici:

of art resides in the handmade work that retains the heat of the spirit which has expressed itself; in design, it’s the chill of thought that prevails, not the hand. In this regard, our artist, although he remains Pesce, recalls Oldenburg. His Pratt chairs are a good example. Cindi Strauss observes: “In creating a series of nine “original” chairs, which, though they were made with the same molds, were different from one another with respect to the manipulation of materials and workmanship, Pesce showed his interest in exploring the hazy borderline between Art and Industrial Design.” For Pesce, design must negate itself, must stop creating identical objects, must soil itself, must become contaminated, abandoning the advantage of the high speed of the assembly line in order to earn the pleasure of contemplation typical of art. But works of art may not be touched; they are fetish objects.

Whereas Pesce’s objects can be touched, handled, mistreated.

Used. Smelled. Perhaps one day, eaten as well. Pesce may dream up a chair made of sugar or chocolate. “Consumption is a way of knowing. The most evolved countries are those which can consume. Those excluded from this process cannot evolve.” And here the design product has an advantage over the work of art.

A chair by Pesce can be thrown away. A painting by Tanning: that’s not an option. But a moment does arrive when the design product becomes precious, so that it becomes impossible to dispose of a Mollino table or a Breuer chair, now rare or produced in limited numbers. Multiplying randomness, Pesce strives to overcome this risk. Consuming, as well as being consumed, as an object of design requires, does not mean being compelled to repeat identical actions: “The industrial production line represents a radical example

Ma il richiamo alla diversità, alla “eccezione” creativa, anche automatica, anche imprevista, non esclude la necessità del tempo, l’imprescindibile obbligo di ÊTRE ABSOLUMENT MODERNE: “è importante sottolineare che non ci si può esprimere con materiali non appartenenti alla nostra epoca, altrimenti si fa un falso. Usare materiali che ci appartengono in quanto a momento storico è una questione

di onestà. I materiali del nostro tempo sono documenti per il futuro... I modi di essere della nostra epoca devono tenere presente ciò che la nostra epoca ci consegna. Non possiamo usare un foglio di papiro per scrivere su una macchina elettronica o un computer”. Come nessuno, Pesce conosce ed esalta la poesia della plastica . Come lui ho incontrato soltanto il direttore del Museo della Scienza, dedicato a Galileo, di Firenze, Paolo Galluzzi, in estasi davanti alle molteplici possibilità offerte dal Cor-Ten. Pesce ci racconta: “in questo periodo sto lavorando con una industria chimica brasiliana che ha scoperto una materia prima da cui ottenere una plastica molto banale... Guardando questa materia prima, ho visto che ha qualità straordinarie, sembra composta da chicchi di riso, trasparenti come l’acqua.

Allora, poiché anche in Brasile ho un laboratorio, mi sono

It’s just this “exceptional” case, which, despite the planning it has been subjected to, manages to express its own peculiarity according to unforeseen laws of its own, that I maintain has an inherent extra-added value.”

But the commitment to diversity, to the creative “exception”, be it automatic or unexpected, does not preclude the necessity of one’s historical moment, the essential obligation ÊTRE ABSOLUMENT MODERNE: “It’s important to underscore that one can not express oneself with materials that don’t belong to one’s era. Otherwise one creates a fake. Using materials proper to one’s own time is a matter of honesty. The materials of our time are documents for the

future. Our actions must reflect what we were given by our own age. We can’t use a sheet of papyrus for writing on an electric typewriter or computer.” Pesce knows and exalts the poetry of plastic like no one else. The only person like him I’ve encountered is the director of the Museum of Science in Florence, dedicated to Galileo, Paolo Galluzzi, who quivers with ecstasy when faced with the many possibilities offered by Cor-Ten. Pesce tells us: “I’m currently working with a Brazilian chemical factory. A raw material was discovered there, from which a very basic plastic can be obtained…Looking at this raw material, I saw that it has extraordinary qualities. It looks as if it’s made from grains of rice that are as transparent as water. And so, since I have a workshop in Brazil too, I started to study the material until I created a brick, slightly bigger than normal, which is just spectacular… It’s

messo a studiare ed è venuto fuori un mattone, un po’ più grande di uno normale, che è una meraviglia... Non è come il vetro cemento, ha una luminosità che ha a che fare con un paesaggio lunare. Il suo costo è pari, se non inferiore, a un mattone fatto di terra”. Così la sperimentazione passa attraverso i materiali, prevalentemente molli, malleabili, adattabili. Questa riflessione e questa interpretazione svelano uno dei problemi comunicativi più tipici della plastica: la standardizzazione. L’ideale democratico degli anni ‘60, mobili tutti uguali per aspetto e prezzo per tutte le classi, non coincideva minimamente con i bisogni della gente; ma la plastica era già pronta per la prossima rivoluzione: la serie diversificata Nobody’s perfect. La teoria del «malfatto» consente una fondamentale innovazione. Se il progettista ricorre al «fatto male» bisogna pur saperlo interpretare e trasformarlo spontaneamente al fine di tirarne fuori risultati altamente espressivi, meno rivolti alla bellezza tradizionale ed

astratta del passato, ma più rappresentativa del presente e, a mio giudizio, del futuro. Il «malfatto» è un’altra faccenda che tende a combattere l’omogeneità.

La bellezza corrisponde a una idea formale, con una corrispondenza storica tra ciò che si considera bello e il tempo in cui si vive. La bellezza vera sta nel riconoscere che noi siamo individui in grado di sbagliare...

Il punto è ammettere una regola d’arte che contenga l’errore.

Perché ammettere l’errore significa liberare la materia delle sue possibilità espressive e permettere a una manodopera anche non qualificata di lavorare secondo le sue capacità.

D’altra parte l’esperienza di chi ha poca esperienza si nutre di una tradizione, di una conoscenza intuitiva che è interna anche al fare meccanico, apparentemente scevro di spiritualità, ma che oscuramente guida atti inconsapevoli, suggestioni, culture inespresse: “si parla molto di materiali locali.

not like a glass brick. It has the luminosity of a lunar landscape.

It’s no more expensive, and possibly cheaper, than a brick made of clay.” Thus his experimentation is executed through his materials, predominantly soft, adaptable and malleable ones.

This consideration and interpretation reveals one of the communication problems most typical of plastic: standardization. Furniture identical in appearance and price for all classes may have been the democratic ideal of the sixties, but it failed to meet people’s actual needs. Nonetheless, plastic was already well-positioned for the next revolution: the diversified series Nobody’s perfect. The theory of the malfatto allows for a fundamental innovation. If the designer turns to the “imperfectly made”, he needs to know how to interpret and transform it spontaneously so as to turn it towards highly expressive end results; less beholden to traditional beauty

and the abstraction of the past, but more representative of the present, and, in my judgement, the future. Malfatto is another way to fight against homogeneity.

Beauty corresponds to a formal idea, with an historical correspondence between what one considers beautiful and the time one lives in. Real beauty resides in the acknowledgement that we are individuals capable of making mistakes…the point is to admit craft that contains error. To admit the mistake is to liberate the material’s expressive possibilities, and to allow for unskilled labor, each person working according to his or her ability. Furthermore, the experience of the inexpert is nourished by a tradition, by an intuitive knowledge that is inherent also to mechanical work, which is apparently deprived of any spirituality, but obscurely leads to unconscious actions, suggestions, unexpressed knowledge. “One hears a lot

The Brazilian material I’m interested in is rubber, because there are rubber trees near my workshop. In fact, I’m building a house entirely of rubber but it smells bad, so I asked the rubber workers how they usually remove that smell from their hands after work. Their answer was juniper juice. I liked that, so I tried mixing fresh latex with juniper juice.

The result is a wall that smells like the ointments you apply on your nose when you have a cold.

I could sleep in that house when I have a cold. These are paths architecture hasn’t yet explored.”

Only in the name of diversity may one conceive of reanimating what is inert; to refresh its spirit or to give it one for the first time.
