Dear Editor, No-one was more 'gob-smacked' than I was to see my name amongst the 'Local Heroes’ in the April edition of Grapevine, and I would like to thank those kind people who nominated me for this accolade. I feel very honoured, and am certainly in good company!

However, whilst I don't wish to be churlish, it would be very remiss of me not to correct one or two small, but important, inaccuracies in the article.

Cellan Village Improvement Society was actually founded in 1979 in order to raise funds for the village, as the Community Council was not allowed to do so. Its first aim was to organise a '100' Club and provide basic play equipment on Maesymeillion field, which it did. The idea of a Community Hall came much, much later!

It wasn't until 1989 that I joined the committee and, for my sins, I am still Secretary nearly 25 years later.

My involvement with the committee stemmed from concerns myself and a friend (both Mums with a child of primary school age) had about there being no designated play area for the children of the village, despite all the surrounding green spaces.

That started the development of Maesymeillion recreation ground, for community use.

CVIS became a registered charity and conducted a house-to-house, Local Jigsaw Survey asking residents what they would like to see in their village.

A children's play area and purpose-built community centre topped the list. The next step was to formally lease Maesymeillion field from Ceredigion County Council, and the rest, as they say, is history!

But none of this happened overnight and there were many 'local heroes' along the way.

Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the many, many committee members, families, villagers and friends, some, sadly, no longer with us, who worked tirelessly over the years to achieve what we have today in Cellan, not forgetting the many outside bodies who supported, advised and funded our various projects.

We are very proud of the facilities we now have at the heart of our community, and are grateful to all who use them and thus continue to support the present, dedicated committee as we build for the future.

The Merging of Local Authorities in Wales Members discussed the future merging of Local Authorities in Wales and the implications for Lampeter. The Town Council favoured the merging of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, incorporating the Teifi Valley (the “old” Dyfed).

Alcohol Exclusion Zone Members questioned the effectiveness of the Alcohol Exclusion Zone in combating the consumption of alcohol in public spaces. PCSO Hannah Evans reported that Police Officers were patrolling the areas on a regular basis.

CCTV Cameras The six cameras within Lampeter have, in the past, been primarily funded and maintained by Ceredigion County Council, and monitored by the Police in Aberystwyth. However, due to budget cuts, this arrangement will not be in place after the 31 March 2014.

Lampeter Loyalty Card If you take even a casual stroll along the main streets of Lampeter town centre you will no doubt be struck, or possibly even alarmed, by the growing number of vacant shops.

The last six months particularly has seen a worrying number of closures - even around Harford Square with the likes of Tiggs and Rayners going in recent weeks.

The Lampeter Chamber of Trade, representing the majority of the shops and businesses in the town, is acutely aware of the issue and is now actively investigating a number of ideas and schemes that can hopefully boost trade in the town. More trade will mean more jobs and more wealth staying in the local community.

Of course there are a range of factors contributing to the decline of businesses in the town - high rates, unrealistic rents, car parking charges, low footfall…

But we shouldn’t start playing ‘Ghost Town’ just yet. Lampeter still has some great shops - and even some very special ones. The Mulberry Bush and Calico Kate for example are both currently in the running for national awards.

What is critical now is that the shops that remain (and hopefully new ones to come) are supported by the people of Lampeter.

To encourage people to shop locally in the town Lampeter Chamber of Trade will shortly be launching a Lampeter Loyalty Card.

The Chamber will be issuing these credit card size Loyalty Cards in the next month or so.

Each time you spend at least £3 in a participating shop or business in Lampeter you will get a sticker on your card. Once you have 10 stickers on your card you can pop it in one of the collection boxes around town.

At the end of each month all the cards will be collected and a winner drawn. The winner will receive £30 of Lampeter Loyalty Vouchers to spend at any of the participating shops or businesses in the town.

You will be able to have as many Loyalty Cards as you like so the more you shop in Lampeter the more chance you will have to win.

The Loyalty Card scheme is based on the successful Pershore Pride Card (shoppinginpershore.co.uk/ pride_card). Lampeter Chamber of Trade hopes the Loyalty Card will encourage local people to shop more in Lampeter and to try new shops that they might not have visited before.

So before you click to buy online, or before you hop in the car to go shopping in Carmarthen or Aberystwyth, why not stay loyal to Lampeter and ‘shop local’. You may be surprised how much Lampeter has to offer if you ask around.

Lampeter shops recognised in National Awards Mulberry Bush Wholefoods of Lampeter were one of three finalists short-listed for the prestigious Natural and Organic Products Europe Best Independent Retailer Award. This is the top industry award, and event organizer Suzanne Rowland told the Mulberry Bush manager, Stella Teasdale, that there had been a record number of entries from all over the country. Stella and her mother, Josie Smith, who co-founded the Mulberry Bush in 1974, attended the award ceremony and dinner in London on Sunday 13 April.

Stella and Josie spent most of the day at the Natural and Organic Products Trade Show at Olympia, meeting producers and sampling new products.

Coconut and raw chocolate were definitely the star attractions, with many stalls offering delicious new chocolate varieties and coconut drinks, oils and spreads. There were pavilions offering the best of Vegan and Vegetarian foods, Sicilian, Russian, French and American food and health products, along with the latest innovations in the Natural Beauty field. There were cookery demonstrations in the natural Food Kitchen, with many celebrity chefs showing their skills in making raw superfood desserts, African fusion meals, healthy meals for children and many other culinary delights. In the theatre talks were going on all day, with Patrick Holford talking about how food is better medicine than drugs. Sebastian Pole of Pukka Herbs offering an inspirational talk about the healing power of herbs. Organic pioneer and co-founder of Green & Blacks, Craig Sams encouraging everyone to tackle the real food and health crisis, the global ignorance epidemic, by becoming more involved in the debate, using our citizen power through real and digital networks. The show was buzzing with tasty foods, great products and innovation.

Many awards were given at the evening ceremony.

After a three course meal created by top London chef Ray Thompson, TV presenter, Julia Bradbury announced the award winners. Awards were presented in many categories, Best New Food, Drink, Special Diet Product, Natural Beauty Product, Natural Living & Home Product, Health & Nutrition Product.

Then it was time for the Best Independent Natural & Organic Products Retailer of 2014 award to be presented. Stella and Josie were sitting with sister

Sam and a group of young entrepreneurs, who had recently started businesses selling gluten free foods, olive leaf juice and acti-snacks. When the Mulberry Bush name was read out as one of the contenders, they all cheered. The presenter said that there are over 3000 retailers selling natural and organic products in the UK, and 2000 of these are independents. So, to be finalists in this award is a great achievement.

The winner was Toucan Wholefoods from Minehead.

So not our Lampeter Mulberry Bush this time, but if you feel that The Mulberry Bush should win an award this year, when they are celebrating their 40th anniversary, you could nominate them for the Natural Lifestyle Retailer of the Year, the forms are in the shop.

COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND Long Wood goes North

On Friday 11 April, staff and volunteers from Long Wood travelled north to Plas Newydd on Anglesey to attend the annual Llais y Goedwig Gathering.

What’s On in the Woods Long Wood has been happy to welcome a number of groups to use the woods recently. Aberaeron Scouts braved the night and camped out during a weekend of forestry skills.

Lampeter Youth Theatre hosted some woodland activity days with great success. Lastly, young people on The Prince’s Trust scheme got involved in a range of tasks across the site from shingle making to footpath creation.

The sunshine we’ve had has allowed the building team to crack on with the roof, which gives a real sense of shape and scale to the build.

This group meets each year with an aim of getting community woodland projects from across Wales to network, share ideas and discuss important issues with a programme of workshops. This was a great opportunity for us and there were plenty of questions for Long Wood from other groups who were keen to know more about how we had managed to purchase the site and undertake the Visitor Centre build. It made me remember just how unique our project is, as most groups have either much smaller sites or lease their woods. After the workshops, we took a tour of a beautiful community woodland, Coed Llwynonn, where wild garlic and bluebells were sprouting across the floor, alongside their sawmill and neatly stacked timber products. Nature and enterprise in a healthy balance. Inspirational.

With progress on the Visitor Centre coming on well, we’re now able to put the official call out for any volunteers who are keen to get stuck in and develop their green building skills. The team will be making a range of dates available throughout May where you can try your hand at straw bale building, applying hempcrete or a host of other timber tasks. See the events listings for more details. We also have a Birdsong Walk planned for Sunday 1 June, for any keen bird lovers out there.

Felling update During our April public meeting, the Long Wood Directors reviewed their proposal to clear-fell an area of sitka spruce plantation in the woods, due to some local concern. The result of this is that they have decided to commission a programme of thinning across this stand of trees rather than a clear-fell. This will leave a more open canopy remaining and allow light to the woodland floor to encourage natural regeneration to take place. It is worth noting here though that there is a drawback to thinning trees that have grown up in a dense stand together. The risk of wind-blow is increased so it is likely that trees will be vulnerable to high winds; the severity of this though is very hard to predict. If anyone would like further information about this work or future plans for woodland management in Long Wood then we would encourage you to attend our monthly public meetings where your questions and comments can be fielded to the Directors. VINE (Volunteering in the Natural Environment)

In the spirit of this month’s Grapevine ‘May I tempt you’, Tir Coed have recently launched their new VINE (Volunteering in the Natural Environment) initiative, which provides opportunities for the community to get out into the beautiful woodlands of Wales.

VINE is part funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the Tudor Trust, Natural Resources Wales, Ernest Cook Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation and the Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust, and is based at 3 different sites; Long Wood Community Woodland, Lampeter, Coed TyLlwyd, Llanfarian and Allt Goch, Llanidloes. VINE offers a wide range of

with great success at the Long Wood Communtiy Woodland with the 2nd Aberaeron Scouts Group, when fifteen young Scouts and two leaders became pioneers and were the first group to stay on site at Long Wood.

The young Scouts worked towards their Forestry Badge and spent the weekend of 29 March learning about the types of trees growing in the woodland, along with the necessary skills for coppicing and the importance of safety when handling tools.

Tony Eames, an experienced woodsman and craftsman, also taught the Scouts how to make baskets and gypsy flowers, which made wonderful Mother’s Day gifts for the Scouts to present at the end of the weekend.

A special, one day event for small businesses and sole traders will be taking place in Lampeter on Monday 19 May. If you are self employed, the day will be an opportunity to discuss your business and to see if there are any new skills that you could develop, which would suit the needs of your business.

Our experienced tutors will give you the opportunity to handle a camera; photograph your product; edit images; use a computer; create a document, data base or a Facebook page; or use social media to your advantage. You will also be able to discuss ways of promoting your business; increase your customer base, or use simple book keeping methods.

Full details of free courses, coming soon, will be available on the day for you to choose from and sign up for.

Long Wood Community Woodland is an extensive stretch of mixed forestry that stretches for several miles along the ridge between the Dulas and Teifi valleys. There are a number of clearly marked tracks running through it making for easy access within the woodland itself.

It is possible to enter via footpaths from Lampeter, Llangybi, Betws Bledrws and Llanfair Clydogau but is easiest from the car park at grid reference 617521.

Woodland bird species thrive in this rich environment. The conifers near the car park look a little gloomy, even in spring. However, they support good numbers of Coal Tits, Siskins and in particular, Goldcrests. This is Britain’s smallest bird. Listen out for their high pitched calls and, with luck, you may be rewarded with a brief glimpse. This part of the wood is also good for Song Thrushes, which can be heard singing strongly.

Five species of migratory warbler also occur throughout Long Wood and by May all will have returned. The very similar songs of the Blackcap and Garden Warbler are rich and exquisitely beautiful, that of the Willow Warbler delightfully sweet. For me though, the accelerating trill of the Wood Warbler is the one I long to hear most. The wooded uplands of Wales are the UK stronghold of this relatively scarce and rapidly declining migrant from tropical Africa and about half a dozen singing males frequent sunlit glades at Long Wood for a few brief weeks.

this and the politicians need reminding that the line would link three university towns, Carmarthen, Lampeter and Aberystwyth. The University of Trinity St David and Aberystwyth University have been contacted. Lampeter has one of the only UK universities without a rail connection! Some 360 Community Councils, voluntary groups and organisations in the area are also being contacted.

A detailed map-based survey has shown that no more than 3% of the original track-bed has been lost. The figure of 5% widely quoted is therefore a generous estimate. There are likely to be new faster alignments at the northern and southern ends of the line. The Gwili Railway will not be affected, and may indeed benefit from the new line.

Traws Link Cymru is not campaigning to re-open the old line but to open a faster more direct route with less stops and faster journey times with modern diesel trains that accelerate much faster than steam trains! The original line from Manchester to Milford Haven was indeed an over ambitious idea and such a route is unnecessary now. The route from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth makes far more sense in the 21st Century.

We plan to hold another public meeting in the next couple of months. If you want to see the railway re-opened and become active in the campaign, please come along. TRAWS LINK CYMRU (TLC)

Rail Link Campaign News - May 2014 The campaign has generated a lot of interest and has been featured heavily in the local press during the last few weeks. Several articles have been published, including one in Daily Wales. A Constitution is being prepared for imminent approval. Membership of TLC will be free, but all members will have a Membership Card based on the business cards already being circulated.

The National Transport Budget was discussed at the Public Meeting on 20 March. The general opinion was that west Wales does not get a fair share of this budget. It was suggested this could be an important subject for future campaigning. There is cross-party support for the campaign as evidenced by the recent debate in the Senedd.

However, we would particularly like to thank our local AM, Elin Jones, for her steadfast support for the campaign from the earliest days.

There are many advantages of reopening the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth link. At the moment, the bus services that struggle to serve local communities and act as strategic links would be free to concentrate on local transport. Reopening the rail route would help the bus services locally as longer journeys would be by rail and shorter connecting services by bus. Integration is the key; bus and train timetables must be co-ordinated.

There are other well used rail routes serving quite small towns along the way. The Association of Train Operating companies (ATOC) figure of 20,000 is a guide, but towns along the reopened Waverley route in Scotland are smaller. Galashiels which is the terminus of the new line has only 12,000 population (and no university!). There are 55,000 people living along the Aberystwyth to Carmarthen route.

The suggested cost of ÂŁ650m is only based on the Waverley route. It may well be that our line would cost a lot less, as less track-bed has been lost and most is of relatively low value. The major costs would be bridge replacements and station buildings.

Monster of the Sea - part 2 When Josh got back to the beach, he looked behind him to see if the sea monster was still there. It was inches away from him. He couldn’t believe it, the sea monster was real!. His heart was pounding like a bass drum. He was scared, but excited. Josh stared at it for a moment thinking that he might be dreaming, but it was still there. He wanted to run back home to fetch his camera and his notebook, but he didn’t want to leave in case it vanished. After all, he was the first person to see the sea monster in one hundred years. Josh gazed up at the ginormous monster, and thought he saw patches of what looked like blood oozing from it’s neck. He wanted to reach out and touch it, but was afraid that it might attack him. to be continued…

May I tempt you to… get creative?

Are you feeling crafty? If you are, our new project All Things Are Connected just might appeal to you.

Over the next few months we’re aiming to get creative and produce several community ‘works of craft’ to raffle off and raise funds to support the work at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre. We want this to be about community, about making friends, about sharing skills, about learning new things and about being part of the work of Denmark Farm. We aim to highlight the relationships between people and nature, exploring the value and diversity of life and landscapes.

Initially we’re planning to make at least two ‘friendship blankets’, one of 6 inch squares and the other an appliquéd tree of life, but we are open Friendship to other ideas and would love to hear what you Friendship Blanket with contributions from around theblanket world with contributions would like to do. You can contribute by coming from around the world along and making something with us, by donating yarn, by sending us something to incorporate or even by making a whole item for us to raffle.

The inspiration for this project, came from a collective creation that I have been focused on for a few months now, that has yielded contributions from as far afield as India, Australia and the US. As I have been working on this, I have come to realise the joy of collaboration – of creating an object with other people – of discovering that, while all the individual elements are beautiful, drawing them together adds a whole extra dimension to what we can achieve. And if we can do this when we live hundreds and even thousands of miles apart, surely we can do something similar on a more local scale?

So, can I tempt you to join in?

Whether you knit, sew, felt or crochet, or want to learn, why not come along to our ‘Craft and Cake’ afternoons at Denmark Farm to have a natter, learn or share a crafting skill and contribute to our community creations? Some of our tutors and volunteers will be there to help with knitting, crochet and creative ideas. So, come and spend a couple of hours with us and discover that together we can craft the world into a better place.

We’re asking that everyone who comes makes a donation, and extra cake will always be welcome!

Mike Clarke is a Bowen Technique practitioner. The Bowen Technique is a remedial, hands-on therapy that is applied using very gentle pressure. Ali Kaye and Shion Buschner- Wilson have been practicing Acupuncture in the Lampeter area for over twenty five years. They both studied at the College of Traditional Acupuncture at Leamington Spa under Professor J.R Worsley. She has worked as a psychotherapist, counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist for over 25 years, offering brief counselling as well as long term psychotherapy. Her work is Integrative, based in person-centred theory informed by various other approaches, including trainings in EMDR, Somatic Trauma Therapy and LBGTO issues.

Catriona MacDonald is a Registered Osteopath. She has been practicing osteopathy since 1989 and began working in Lampeter in 2010. Her aims are not only to alleviate pain and immobility but also to help people find deeper levels of wellness. She particularly enjoys supporting expectant mums and families, as well as helping people recovering from trauma and long term illness.

Christine Stephenson is a practitioner of Western Herbal Medicine (WHM), a discipline which has evolved over the last 2000 years. In its modern form WHM combines traditional knowledge of herbs with scientific research. Dietary advice plays an important part in treatment. Herbal Medicine is appropriate for many conditions but is particularly good at treating chronic conditions such as gut related problems, skin conditions and hormonal disturbances.

Louise Nadim and Cathy Crick Stanton are both Barbara Brennan hands-on energy healing practitioners registered with the CNHC. Some of the published poets have formed a reading group called Red Heron. They have read at The Old Town Festival in Carmarthen for the last two years, and last year read at the PENfro literature festival.

They also have read in Lampeter at The Kings Festival and at The Food Festival.

Most recently the workshop became part of an exciting new project called The Welsh/Irish Spoken Poetry Alliance, WISPA. WISPA links Irish and other West Wales writing groups to enable Irish writers to come to Wales to give readings and have a professional development day, and in return a Welsh poet goes to Ireland and enjoys the same hospitality.

The writers’ workshop welcomes new members and meets weekly on Tuesdays, 7-9pm in the Wolfson Room, Trinity Saint David University, during college term time. Come and join us.

She was here for a year, and during that time the Lampeter Writers’ Workshop was founded. We put up notices calling local writers and would-be writers to attend an inaugural meeting, and the workshop on Tuesday nights started.

This year we are celebrating thirty years of being the longest running writers’ group in Wales. Like all groups we’ve had our highs and lows, but from those early days long standing friendships have been made.

I’m told Lampeter is on a ley line. It certainly has a lot of poets. Back in 1984 I had seen a few in the pages of literary magazines, had even shared a page with them. Now I meet them, and others who came having heard of Gillian’s residence.

Gillian Clarke is now the National Poet of Wales, but back in 1984 she was renovating her cottage and working as a Writer on Tour. Now she is on the GCSE syllabus and reads as part of Poetry Live, Final Copy Deadline taking poetry to huge audiences.

Back then we put up notices of poetry readings on trees in the Shakespearean manner; now we put notices on social media.

MAY UPDATE It is now only three months to the Lampeter Food Festival on Saturday 26 July and the pace of organising is picking up fast.

Marquees, insurance, first aid cover, electricity supplies are all being dealt with. Demonstrations and workshops are being planned with a growing team of chefs including Lisa Fearn, Vicky North and Denise Baker-McClearn. Bookings from stallholders are now coming in thick and fast.

All this should make this year’s festival on Saturday 26 July a bumper feast of food activity.

But before the festival itself we are busily arranging a number of activities to raise funds, build the momentum and get as many people involved as possible.

FESTIVAL FEASTS The first two feasts have now been consumed at The Mulberry Bush and The Belle, Llanllwni.

Both were sell-outs and enjoyed by all, with fine music and great food. 

Next up, on Saturday 17 May, will be Tom Holden and the Rambling Pea at Victoria Hall, with music by the Pig’s Foot String Band.

On Friday 13 June the 25 Mile from Cardigan will be at Victoria Hall for another pop-up feast. Music at that feast will be provided by local singer/songwriter Georgia Owen.

Our final feast before the festival will be in the Private Dining Room at Trinity Saint David University on Friday 18 July.

The tickets for all the feasts are £25 with half the ticket price going to support the Lampeter Food Festival. 

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION Our food-themed Photographic Competition is now up and running. The competition is open to children and adults and has three categories: local food products, local food producers and local food venues.

Cash prizes have kindly been donated by Trinity Saint David University amongst others, so it is definitely time to get snapping.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S FOOD FESTIVAL EVENT New this year will be a food festival event aimed specifically at young people. This will take place on Saturday 5 July in Victoria Hall.

A number of organisations are already getting involved including Lampeter Youth Theatre and Ysgol Bro Pedr, and a whole range of activities and performances are being planned.

We are keen to hear from any other local youth organisations and schools that would like to take part in the day.

The Potting Shed Direct stall can be found locally at the People’s Market Lampeter, Felinfach Village Hall and Llansawel Village Hall. You can purchase pre-packed or pick’n’mix ranges of plant dyed textiles; needlework and felting kits, bespoke hand embroidered gifts and commissions direct from the stall. Regular workshops are held at 1st Lampeter Scouts Hall, The Quercus Rooms, Carmarthen, and other local and national venues (please see advert on page 22 for details).

Pam Newton, locally based craftswoman, smallholder and mum of four, is the resourceful woman who set up Potting Shed Direct in 2008. Pam lives in Rhydcymerau, in the foothills of Brechfa Forest.

She uses plants such as nettles, rhubarb, weld and woad to dye fibres and textiles which she then uses to create bespoke needlework and felt work. Her holistic methods, influenced by medieval techniques, keep traditional crafts alive in a contemporary way.

Potting Shed Direct was started, in 2008, as a gardening business, with an emphasis on sustainable organic and native planting. A fruitless search for natural materials led her to develop her own range of natural dyes from the plants she was working with, sourcing textiles like sheep and alpaca fleece from neighbouring farmers and small holders.

Pam uses these materials to create traditional handmade embroidered boxes, felt work and raised needlework, affectionately known as ‘stumpwork’.

The forests, mountains and rivers of the beautiful local landscape have inspired the colours and textures of Pam’s fabrics and textiles. Fungi, oak leaves, acorns, strawberries and blackberries are examples of the endless inspiration for creating 3 dimensional interpretations of the natural world.

This year, to Pam’s amazement, Potting Shed Direct was invited by Country Living Magazine to exhibit at their prestigious Country Living Spring Fair at the Business Design Centre, in Islington, London.

For the show she decided to take the plunge and launch her new range of bespoke wedding accessories, influenced by the Middle Ages. These individually commissioned garters, favour bags, mussies and headdresses are a natural alternative to the more traditional wedding accessory.

Pam’s other passion is passing on her knowledge of these traditional skills, to lead workshops and to encourage participants to creatively take inspiration from nature. Workshops include experimenting with plants to make dyed fibres, textiles, wools and threads, developing them into felt artwork and

The Conscious Cabaret is sure to be a great day out for all ages with Live music, Workshops, People's Council, Healing Space and Kids Cwtch.

It is a freely evolving festival run by the people, for the people. It also acts as a community resource bank that actualises unity and promotes a culture of generosity and openness via the Magic hat.

If there is one thing I've learnt on my journey it is that Home is a special place and that a feeling of 'being at home' can often occur - if the environment allows it.

I love to create spaces. I've spent the best part of my lifetime preparing space. The motto “If you build it, they will come” often springs to mind when preparing for a gathering, so the more energy put in, the better. Rainbow gatherings, which I've been involved with in the UK since 2009, last for 28 days (from new moon to new moon) and this family friendly, magic hat run dis-organisation has some very effective, yet unconventional ideas in how a sustainable and more contenting lifestyle can actually be achieved through the use of a few basic principles.

I've lived in very strong communities that use the talking stick for their counsel. It's a magical process that can create strong bonds between people and to make things really move forward, rather than the bickering that can become all consuming within small groups of individuals all trying to share the same space. It's an incredible tool that can help soothe, or inspire, or release, or enthuse, and I'd love to share it with you. These communities were run on Magic hat and that too was a great learning for me about how we can all create abundance if we can unite our hearts and our resources.

Myself and some good friends are putting on a day of festivities on Sunday 11 May in Tregaron, that incorporates a talking circle. We've called in the People's Council, and it’s free to take any shape it so desires, so long as it adheres to the continued use of the talking stick. It is a gift to us all, to be able to communicate and break down the barriers of ego within us, to be able to forgive, and to be able focus our collective energy towards greater aspirations.

One voice from all, not one voice dictating to the many. For a free and fair society, we should all be talking and listening to each other a whole lot more within our local communities.

This 'Conscious Cabaret' event is open to all and should provide a comfortable, family-friendly and educational environment for us to be together, and celebrate each other and the world we live in.

The Magic Hat Council (a finance meeting using the talking stick) allows for the allocation of this resource upon request. All requests for funding must be via a consensus, meaning that there must be a unanimous agreement between whoever is present. Each MHC will agree upon a time and a place for the next MHC before the end of each meeting.

People's Council The talking circle, or listening circle, is a great opportunity for connections to be made, for sharing or networking, planning or orientating, or for disagreements to be settled. Every one of us has a unique perspective, so the more perspectives we have of a situation, the more understanding we have and the more skilfully we can act individually and as a group. The more energy that is put into the circle, the more energy there is to create and build upon the visions that we share.

Saint Tewdrig Martyr Reposed: 480 Remembered: April 1 In Wales, little is known of specific battles with the Anglo-Saxons on the borders of British territory. The veil is drawn back a little in the life of St Tewdrig, a post-Roman King of Brecon. He gave up his Kingdom in order to become a hermit at Tintern.

However, in about 480, he was recalled to take up armour again when the territory of his tribe was threatened with invasion. Though victorious in battle, he was severely wounded. He hoped to be taken to the island of Flatholm to die, but expired at Mathern on an inlet in the Severn in Monmouthshire in south west Wales. He was buried at Merthyr Tewdrig, meaning ‘Martyr Tewdrig’, otherwise known as Mathern, meaning ‘place of a king’. Any king who lost his life in battle against pagan forces was deemed a martyr for the faith. There is a well by the road to the church where his wounds were washed.

Not all the saints have a troparion written for them.

However, Christianity is a resurrectional faith and we believe that those saints who precede us to heaven have more free time on their hands than us; so we can ask any of them to pray and intercede for us.

In 1616 a stone coffin was found by the altar in the church at Mathern with a badly damaged skull. A plaque in the church gives an account of the finding and reburial.
