Once again members of Lampeter Rotary club were in the High Street inviting members of the public to take a free blood pressure check as part of national stroke awareness day on 22 April. As with last year a steady stream of people took advantage of this important test which took place in Adrian Thomas's pharmacy. Tests

Grapevine is now available around the world: issuu.com/lampetergrapevine/stacks … but we are also really interested to know how far and wide the paper versions have travelled; what local villages and communities it has reached and what route it has taken - Or perhaps how many people have passed it on to someone else? Are you planning any travels over the coming months? If so please don’t forget to pack your copy of Grapevine - we’re always fascinated to find out where in the world it goes with you. Can your copy of Grapevine be the most environmentally friendly traveller? Or will yours be shared in a variety of unusual ways, be found in an quirky local location, be upcycled or recycled? Where will your copy of Grapevine end up? Why don’t you send us your photos to: lampetergrapevine@gmail.com and we’ll publish them in future issues. Eds.

There are no categories or restrictions for nominations, which may be made by individuals or organisations, together with a short explanation for the nomination. These should be forwarded to myself or any Rotarians by the end of June please, following which certificates will awarded to the most deserving candidates. Croeso / Welcome to another issue of the Grapevine … Little did we know, when we first came up with the theme for this issue, that ’Food for Thought’ would turn out to be so fitting for the events that have unfolded. There certainly is a lot to think about right now, with vast amounts of information bombarding us from every angle - all needing to be interpreted, digested and carefully considered as the General Election creeps ever closer. I recently referred back to our 2015 ‘Election Special’ to find more thought provoking articles and references to that significant event as one ‘which only comes around every five years’. It just shows how quickly things change and how wrong you can sometimes be. To help in the process of deciphering what each of our seven local parliamentary candidates are campaigning about, Grapevine invited each to prepare a statement for inclusion in this edition; (see pages 7-9). Short and concise versions of their key issues for canvassing your votes. Hopefully, it will give you ’Food for Thought’ at least, and might help to encourage reluctant or new voters to want to make a difference.

This 50th issue is not full of election material, far from it, we have our distinctive mix of contributions to provoke thought, challenge perceptions, inform, offer opportunities and inspire action. So, if you feel the need to escape from the campaign trail for a while, then sit yourself down, delve inside and discover a rich mix of events, activities and more to give you plenty of ‘Food for Thought’

We are in for a perfumed treat in June when our speaker will be Kari-Astri Davies telling us all about gardening with scented plants. Lavender, old fashioned roses and jasmine are some of the best-known scented plants but Kari-Astri will recommend some more unusual specimens to try. You may want ideas for containers to stand near the door so you can enjoy your perfumed plants as you step outside. Kari-Astri regularly writes for ‘Landscape’ magazine, so we are looking forward to welcoming her on June 21 for an evening of “Scents and Scentsability”. There will be time to ask questions
afterwards and a plant sale organised by our members in aid of club funds. Our 2017 Challenge is underway, simply grow something edible and make a dish with it to share at our August meeting. Join us at 7.30pm, visitors pay £3 (includes tea or coffee), annual membership is £14. For more information about the club phone 01558 685119, click cothigardeners.com or connect with us on Facebook. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month Coronation Hall, Pumsaint, SA19 8UW. Donna Worrall 5
Lampeter Food Surplus Are you struggling to pay the bills? Are you having to cut down on food shopping because of the rising prices?
Lampeter Food Surplus is distributing free food to anyone who wants it every Monday from 4-6pm at Victoria Hall. We are a group of volunteers who are concerned that many local people may be facing difficult times, when so much food is being wasted at a cost to the environment. The amount of food that is thrown away each day in the UK, much of it still perfectly edible, is increasingly recognised as being unacceptable. Lampeter Food Surplus is developing a local network, seeking to reduce the levels of 'surplus' food going to landfill or anaerobic digestion, and instead redistributing this food for both social and environmental benefit. Many thanks to the Co-op who have pledged to give us their surplus groceries on a regular basis as well as Watson and Pratts and the Mulberry Bush who have been very generous and supportive to get the project off the ground. We are presently in negotiation with Sainsbury's so we are hoping we will have their support in the near future! Any local businesses who would like to donate their edible surplus, or local people who would be willing to help with cooking, picking up or promotion, please contact: Sarah, 01974 821219 sarahjhulme@outlook.com Thanks Lindsey and Sarah

Etholiad Cyffredinol / General Election CEREDIGION Constituency
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE
On behalf of Grapevine readers the following invitation was sent out to all seven candidates standing for election in Ceredigion. Dear Candidate In the run up to the General Election the Grapevine would like to publish a short statement from each candidate standing for the position of Member of Parliament for the constituency of Ceredigion. THURSDAY 8th June The Grapevine is a free monthly (A4, 40 page) local Community Newsletter which is compiled, produced and distributed by volunteers in and around the Lampeter area (see the current issue attached). It has been in existence since July 2012 and has now reached a circulation of 2500 with many copies being passed around within families or to friends and neighbours. The Grapevine covers a variety of issues, events, news and views and the June issue is themed 'Food for Thought', which is now quite apt in the build up to voting. We would like to invite you to write a 250 word piece for inclusion, highlighting your key local, national and international
issues, the positive changes your Party would make and what people will notice as a result. We hope you will see this as a useful opportunity to present local voters with the crucial information they need to support your campaign. We are inviting every candidate to contribute and with the exception of libellous comments, we commit to print unedited 250 words from each.
Below are the responses from candidates (in alphabetical order) Ruth Rosamund DAVIS I’m the daughter of a small business owner and a parish minister for the elderly. I grew up knowing the importance of hard work, strong local communities and the role of business as a force for good in society. Helping people and solving their problems is at the core of who I am. If I see something wrong, I want to fix it. That’s why I want to be your MP. People often tell me they want an MP who has experience in the real world and knows what life is like outside of Westminster – I do. My previous roles include part-time work as a chambermaid, care assistant, receptionist and in hospitality. My current job is as a cyber security expert for BT; working to help firms protect themselves against criminals, terrorists and hackers online. But I have also held several roles with MPs and Select Committees and so I understand the Westminster system and how to get things done for Ceredigion. Many people in Ceredigion are uncertain of what their future holds outside the EU. I understand this and will do all I can to help. This means supporting Theresa May to secure the best Brexit deal possible for our country. A deal that protects Ceredigion’s agricultural and tourism industries. Which continues to support farmers but reduces bureaucracy, whilst maintaining easy access to crucial overseas markets. It also means using my experience and energy to tackle rural broadband problems and to fight for the infrastructure improvements Ceredigion needs.
Grenville Morgan HAM
I’m standing because the alarm bells are already ringing on climate change, and I don’t want us to look back in five or ten years and realise we missed the starting gun on the next industrial revolution. We have an abundance of natural resources in Ceredigion, and we can use renewable energy to create many skilled jobs and also revenue for community groups and farmers. We are living in uncertain times and that’s why it is important that we stand up for what matters. Brexit presents a grave threat to Ceredigion. With farming at the heart of our rural communities, and high levels of rural poverty, we will be hit hard by the loss of subsidies and funding. Our universities and hospitals will also feel the impact. As your Green MP I will defend our social and environmental protections and I will call for a Ratification Referendum on the final Brexit deal. We urgently need warm, affordable housing, investment in transport and our public services, and greater support for the vulnerable. And we need to invest in our young people, not saddle them with student debt. To fund this we need a fair tax system – no more loopholes, no more excuses For our children, for our planet, we need climate change to be at the heart of government policy. That’s what I’ll fight for, as your MP. We must protect the earth that is our home, and the natural world that is our life support system. 7

Ben Morgan LAKE The election on 8 June is an unexpected opportunity to make a statement on behalf of Ceredigion and Wales. These next few years of Brexit negotiations are crucial. We cannot be complacent or mediocre: there is far too much at stake. Ceredigion needs to send a clear message to Theresa May and the next Westminster Government that a Bad Brexit would be devastating for us. Our agricultural communities, our universities and our wider economy are all at stake, and we need someone to stand up for Ceredigion. I shall work to ensure that Westminster gives back to Ceredigion every penny that is lost from leaving the EU, including payments to farmers and investment in our infrastructure. I shall challenge, at every opportunity, continuing cuts to public funding by the Tories. Such austerity is jeopardising our NHS, our schools and universities here in Ceredigion. I shall protect our local health and care services from being downgraded and centralised. Everybody deserves to be within reach of the care they need. Looking to the future, it's obvious to me that a strong team of Plaid Cymru MPs is crucial for Wales. Ceredigion needs to be part of that team. I am Lampeter born and bred and I hope to take every opportunity to protect and advance the interests of this town, our county and Wales as a whole in Westminster.
Dinah MULHOLLAND
Labour has promised us what Wales and Ceredigion need: a Brexit deal that ensures strong trading arrangements and access to the single market, in order for our economy and communities to thrive. The Labour Party is fully committed to ensuring that our farming, our other industries, universities, our lifelong education and our working rights are protected. Ceredigion has been profoundly affected by years of Tory cuts to budgets for public services and benefits. Local child poverty rates are climbing, food bank use is shamefully high. The Tories’ Bedroom Tax is hitting 401 people in Ceredigion. Labour will scrap it. The punitive benefit sanctions regime, and cuts to Bereavement Support Payment, will be scrapped. Housing Benefit for under-21s will be reinstated. Labour will reverse cuts to Universal Credit. Benefit payment delays and the ‘rape clause’ will be scrapped. Carer’s Allowance will rise, benefitting 804 carers in Ceredigion by more than £500 a year each.17,693 pensioners in Ceredigion will be better off under Labour’s guarantee on the value of state pensions. A settlement for Wales will reflect the changes planned for England - Labour’s far reaching, visionary manifesto offers us the opportunity to return to a place where we recognise ourselves again, to a landscape where communities can refocus on what is good and positive rather than battling with devastating and unnecessary austerity, where that positivity can be reflected in our arts, our culture, our future, and an international landscape of promoting peace and justice at the heart of our foreign policy.

Mark Fraser WILLIAMS This election will be the biggest fight for our country in a generation. It is about the type of country we want to be and the future we want for our children. It is about ensuring that Wales and our rural communities have a strong voice in Westminster who will fight for a Wales that is outward looking and tolerant where everyone has the opportunity to get on in life. With concerns about the impact that leaving the Single Market will have on our agriculture sector and our towns and villages, it is vital that we have a strong and experienced voice standing up for our communities to ensure that the government listens to our concerns. In my twelve years representing Ceredigion I have always put our County and our communities first and I will continue to do so if re-elected. I will continue to stand up for small businesses, for better broadband, for our local services, and for the funding that our communities need to grow and prosper. And I will fight for a Wales that has the tools we need to build an economy that works for everyone, to make our NHS and social care services fit for the future, and to give our children the best start in life. A vote for me and the Welsh Liberal Democrats is a vote for the open, tolerant and liberal values that Ceredigion has always believed in, and for a strong, local and experienced voice in Westminster.
You’ve seen all the responses - now it’s your turn to decide. Food for Thought indeed! I do hope you will find this information helpful when making choices about where you will cast your vote. The most important thing on Thursday 8 June is to make your vote count! Eds.

COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND It’s been a busy spring at Long Wood as usual; our seasonal walks began with our annual spring bluebell walk, and over the weekend of 20 & 21 May, Canolfan Long Wood held its first Art Exhibition hosting Grwp Llanfair Clydogau /The Llanfair Clydogau Group. Canolfan Long Wood was transformed. The natural hues and traditional timber framing of the building provided the perfect backdrop to showcase the colours and textures of the artwork on display. Refreshments were available from Cuti Coffee, and the event was a huge success for all with 110 visitors over the two days. Also on 14 May Long Wood celebrated International Dylan Day with snippets of his famous works erected around the woodlands. We cannot thank our Woodland Wednesday Volunteer group enough for their efforts in making these things happen, not only for the ideas but also for the solid
efforts in crafting display boards for the Arts group and dedicated calligraphy for the International Dylan Day. This little foray in the world of art has been successful and popular for all involved and Long Wood will look to build on this theme through the rest of the summer and into autumn as well. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and newsletters for more information of these events as and when they are planned. If you wish to make use of Long Wood for an event, or are thinking about starting something, maybe using the forest school or the woodland theatre areas, feel free to get in contact with us to discuss your requirements. The office is only staffed part-time, so if you leave a message we will pick up on it when we’re next in. Andrew Gajlikowski

Celtic Christianity: Part XXXII Saint Tegai / Tygai Ascetic Reposed 6 century Remembered June 5 According to Enwogion Cymru St Tegai was one of the many 6th century saints along the northern coast of Wales. He was one of the sons of Ithel Hael, and with his brother Tecwyn accompanied Saint Cadfan from Brittany to Wales and became a member of the college of
Bardsey Island. He made his cell inside an ancient burial ground (which is food for thought) just south of Bangor and evangelised the area now called Llantegai and is the patron saint and founder of Llandygai in the county of Gwynedd. An ancient coffin, once thought to be his, lies in the churchyard but the identification is unlikely. In Achau y Saint, Tegai is called Tegai Glasog of Maelan. Harry Harrison

‘Adar o’r unlliw, ehedant i’r unlle’ ‘Birds of a feather flock together’ By 2017 Year 5 pupils, Briar, Tristan & Nathan
'Cwch Enfys' - 'Rainbow Ship' by 2016 Year 5 pupils http://hmdufflecoat.wixsite.com/works http://prif82.wixsite.com/oriel-y-dderi
The opening of the new ARTiculate exhibition at The Welsh Quilt Centre was a great success with Ysgol Y Dderi pupils introducing the show with a presentation about the artworks on display. There were paintings of Legendary Pokemon reinventing the story of Strata Florida and Meloetta’s magical melodies, and the beautifully illustrated ‘Llyfr Gwyrddlas Y Dderi’, full of ancient proverbs from the ‘White Book of Rhydderch’. There was a film of the heroic ‘Alarch Anhygoel’ aka ‘Superswan’ and the dramatic rescue at Falcondale Lake re-told with animation models. More traditional work inspired by Byzantine icons depicted ‘Nike’ the Greek Goddess of Victory and ‘Brenin’ the King of Daffodils and our very own Dewi Sant. There was a strong environmental theme underlying the show with the school’s digital artwork featuring butterflies and wildflower meadows and of course recycled materials had been made use of with imaginative effect, by pupils from both Ysgol Y Dderi and Ysgol Bro Pedr. It was good for the children to witness first-hand the appreciation of everyone present, and to see those ‘red dots’ appearing as sales were made. The exhibition in Gallery 3 is free and open until 3 June. The Welsh Quilt Centre is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11am – 4.30pm. Helen Duffee growth at altitude, just to name a few. If you know of anyone who is an avid vegetable seed collector do let them know, we would love to have a wide variety of seeds to add to the library for everyone to borrow. We would just need a few details of the seeds, what village, altitude, aspect and so on to help others choose the seeds that would best suit their growing conditions. All seeds need to be open pollinated as F1 hybrids will not grow true, so do check your seed packets to see what you have planted. Seed collection dates will be available during September where you can drop off your seeds and join the library ready for its official launch in October. Which vegetables and herbs do well for you? Can you save some seed for the library? Not sure how? Want some hints and tips? Come along to our seed saving workshop, on Saturday 2 September at Victoria Hall. Everyone welcome. Practical demonstrations and lots of information. Save the date and look out for more details in future Grapevine issues. Depending on the interest this may be the first of a series of similar events. Happy seed saving! Now there's some food for thought. Cathy Streeter banchadaullambed@outlook.com
Swap food for thought with Lampeter Seed Library/ Banc Hadau Llambed We are all familiar with the concept of the Public Library where we can borrow books to read and return them, gaining new information and thoughts on subjects that interest us. With Lampeter Seed Library/ Banc Hadau Llambed, the concept is much the same, you join the library, and borrow vegetable seeds, plant the seeds, eat the vegetables and save some seeds from them too. You then return the seeds to the library ready for someone else to borrow, gaining food and seeds with the potential to produce more food. The library is supported by Lampeter Permaculture Group, Transition Llambed and Transition Llambed Development Trust and is being run by volunteers, all of whom are keen growers. The library will concentrate on locally produced seed which is well adjusted to our variable climate here in West Wales, and hopefully including some heritage varieties too. All too often when seed has been produced elsewhere in the country it may not germinate so well here and a lot of seeds are produced under cover too, so may not be as hardy as we would like. Vital attributes for growing here are able to withstand wind, heavy rain, variable spring temperatures, 13

Our annual summer exhibition of objects from the Egyptian collection of Cyfarthfa Castle Museum, Merthyr Tydfil will be back on campus from the afternoon of Thursday 1 June, open to the public 10am-4pm, Mon-Fri before closing on Friday 9 June. Would you like to know what objects were in an Egyptian tomb? Interested in the ideas the ancient Egyptian had regarding their afterlife? Keen to know how this is interpreted in modern times? These, between 5000 and 2000 year old objects, were researched by third year students and lecturer Dr Katharina Zinn as part of the module “Ancient Egyptian Funerary Beliefs. The outcome of this research will be presented in the catalogue of the exhibition. In addition to the ancient Egyptian artefacts we will show clay objects made by the students showing what they would take into their tomb if they were ancient Egyptians.

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group Ceredigion - ‘Food for Thought’
As I am pondering the words ‘food for thought’ my mind is flying like a butterfly from ‘food’, to ‘thought’, and back again to ‘food’, but wait, what happened to that little word ‘for’ sandwiched in between the other two? It is so specific in directing me from one to the other, concentrating and focussing my fluttering mind. Oh how I need help sometimes with this process. We think, we see, we mull over, we grow, we buy, we cook, we eat, we digest, etc. We cannot forget that the ‘food’ is somehow magically converted into ‘thought’. Cognitive problems are not what we want to think about. We avoid it. We pretend it’s not happening. We are advised by professional people involved with our MS lives to eat healthily, to make lists to remind us, to ask others for help but what we really want is to remember everything, to be able to write and speak fluently, to swallow and to have everything just as it was! This is probably unlikely to happen but life can still be so wonderful...thoughts still come and go, food still is enjoyable, even though a less sensitive taste may need more flavourings. Tablets taken with yoghurt can be helped to flow down my throat into my digestive system as the MS nurse told me this week. Swallowing can be difficult. I’m lucky as I love yoghurt! If I forget things, or I struggle to find the right word, sometimes only remembering the first letter, or I go off at a tangent, or I mumble, or, or, or... Please remember that ‘food for thought’ and indeed ‘thoughts for food’ are still there joined by that little but so important word ‘for’. Rambling, flying, fluttering like a butterfly, seeking out the illusive nectar-rich joy of discovery, of the right word! In Lampeter we meet on the first Monday of the month in The Mustard Seed Cafe, College Street, Lampeter from 1.30-3.30pm. Our Aberystwyth group now meets in the new Tesco, 12.30-2.30 on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Disabled Parking, Disabled loos and cafe are all available for us to use. CROESO I BAWB/WELCOME TO ALL.
Tarantism @ Celf Llambed Arts On the last Friday in April at Victoria Hall, Lampeter we were spoiled! Cracking sets from two of the most influential grass root anarcho, punk and folk bands of the
last
twenty
Tragic
years;
Roundabout
and
Tarantism made a great night for all. These guys are the real deal on so many levels and man it shows. For
Tragic Roundabout to be described as five musicians and a drummer is an absolute understatement. Punky and anarchic with Eastern European klezmer is a bit closer to the truth. I personally believe that they are one of the best, which Magnus of Tarantism clearly agreed with, as expressed whilst performing their set.
Tarantism played an equally brilliant blend of celtic, dance, dub, rock, ska and funk-punk. The whole line-up was an absolutely epic sound. What a treat it was! Beer, music and the dancing flowed; dancing flip flops were well and truly dusted off and it was all clearly emotional; making hearts sing and feet move. The next line-up hosted by Celf Llambed Arts at Victoria Hall is an evening of ‘Cabarave’ featuring My
Bad Sister, which should not be missed. Glastonbury last year, Lampeter this month! Stunning dance act with
a
mash
up
of
traditional
cockney-style
performance, beautiful melodies and heavy beats. Support comes from Welsh-language act Ani Glas with tunes from DJ Dutty Moonshine; pop and swing-meetschunky-beats respectively. Café from 7 o'clock, main venue doors open at 8:30pm, along with fully licenced bar. Tickets: £10 adults, £8 concessions and £1 under 12s;

Traws Link Cymru
Aberystwyth. This makes the rebuilding West Wales Rail Campaign Ymgyrch Rheilffordd Gorllewin Cymru of the railway much less of a problem than the Borders Railway in Scotland opened by the Queen in 2015. We already have some footage of the Pencader Tunnel which can be viewed on You Tube (just go to You Tube and search for Traws Link Cymru Pencader). Our next target is the track between Carmarthen and Pencader and these videos will shortly appear on our newly upgraded website. We also intend to put together a promotional video of the whole route showing the magnificent scenery of the Cambrian Mountains and the Teifi Valley which you will be able to enjoy as you travel in the comfort of a modern train to Cardiff, Birmingham, London and beyond, connecting this deprived part of Wales to the wider world. Our campaign has the support of the Labour Party, Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and UKIP so whichever party you support in the General Election you know you will be voting for a candidate who supports the reopening of the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway. And you will see rebuilt Lampeter, Tregaron, Pencader and Llanybydder stations as connecting points for a modern, safe, socially inclusive and ecologically viable transport system. And since railway infrastructure in Wales (unlike roads) is the responsibility of the UK Government, the money (estimated to be between £500m and £750m) will not need come from the Welsh Government budget. Food for thought!
The old Lampeter Station with a modern train. It was interesting that, of the three candidates standing for election to represent Lampeter at the County Council, only one, Ivor Williams mentioned the rebuilding of the railway. He said that as well as serving local people the return of the railway would provide a much needed boost to green tourism and would help to safeguard the future of our historic university. The rebuilding of the railway linking Aberystwyth with Carmarthen is getting closer to reality. The Welsh Government has allocated £300,000 to pay for a Full Feasibility Study which will put meat on the bones of the very positive 2015 Scoping Study, analysing the demand for the link, the benefits and the true cost. This summer you can expect to see engineers in Hi-Viz jackets walking the track bed examining the engineering problems and you will read articles in the local press as the County Councils complete a survey of the current ownership of the land. And the Traws Link Cymru campaign group will be right there supporting them. One of the ways we will be helping the Feasibility Study will be by flying our newly purchased drone to film large parts of the original route so that we can pin down the problems of new buildings in the way of the reinstated railway. Fortunately these are very few and affect less than 3% of the 56 miles between Carmarthen and

Cardigan Bay is noted as a hot spot for jellyfish and in late April and early May was certainly living up to its reputation. Some of these animals were first seen stranded on the beach in Aberystwyth at the end of April, and at that time I was unable to identify them. During the first week of May, while walking on the coast path south of Newquay, I could clearly see jellyfish in the water stretching all along the coastline and was now able to identify them as the Barrel Jellyfish. This species can be more than two feet across and is considered harmless to humans. It’s likely that these creatures spend the winter on the seabed and surface as the water warms up. The huge numbers are a result of the relatively mild winter. They are also able to survive for a number of seasons unlike some of the other species. Other jellyfish can appear in good numbers throughout the summer months so a trip to the beach could be very interesting. Remember, though, that unlike Barrel Jellyfish many of the other species do sting even when dead. One of the most colourful jellyfish is the Portuguese-Man-O-War whose stinging cells are very powerful. This species has already been seen around the British coast even though there has not been a prolonged run of south westerly winds. David Price 27

Lottery funded Research project unearths cider only found in Wales CIDER lovers could soon be able to enjoy a special tipple – a drink that is truly Welsh. A two-year £495,600 National Lottery Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant has enabled a partnership between the University of South Wales (USW) and The Welsh Perry & Cider Society to look at the heritage of orchards and cider making in Wales. One of the main aims of the project – called The Heritage of Orchards and Cider Making in Wales - is to record the DNA traits of Welsh Heritage cider and perry fruit to produce a detailed online catalogue of what exists in the country. But thanks to National Lottery players, while listing the discoveries, the research unveiled something never found before. “The DNA investigations involve us collecting fresh leaves in the spring, and then sending them to be tested and compared to the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale in Kent,” said Jayne Hunt, Heritage Project Manager at the Crumlin-based Welsh Perry &
Cider Society. “We have a museum orchard just outside Llanarth, near Abergavenny, from where some of the leaves were collected, while others are found across the country. “The DNA results have confirmed that 12 cider apples and nine perry pears within the museum orchard are Welsh, and a further 22 unique varieties have been identified from elsewhere in Wales that were not registered with Brogdale’s database before, and we believe to be found only in Wales. “It’s incredibly exciting for us. The project has unearthed far more unique varieties than we ever expected – fruit that is probably found only in Wales, and which has never been recorded. “For cider lovers with a patriotic streak, it could be just what they’re looking for.” Alongside the DNA results, the Society is also conducting single variety fermentation trials on the unique trees to assess their cider and perry potential. These will take place at the Welsh Perry & Cider Society’s annual festival held at Caldicot Castle at the end of May. As well as recording the DNA history, the project is working with 14 community groups in Wales to
regenerate old orchards and to possibly identify areas to plant new trees, as well as providing training, event support, and installation of interpretation details. They will also get biodiversity management plans. (Coedwig Gymunedol Long Wood Community Woodland is part of this group and is the only mid-Wales site .. Why not join in. Contact: 01570 493355)
Another part of the project sees the USW-based George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling (GEECS) research centre collecting stories about the modern cider-making tradition in Wales. “The stories we have reveal the people behind the tradition. We have collected stories about the many ways people’s lives are connected to their orchards and to the history of cider making in Wales,” said Dr Emily Underwood-Lee, who is leading the GEECS project. “We’ve heard about everything from an orchard romance through to the continued use of an 1890 cider press. The stories give us a really fascinating look at the rich and fascinating story of Wales as glimpsed through the lens of cider making and orchards “These cider-maker oral histories and stories will be available online and also through national archives, such as the People’s Collection Wales, to ensure it is accessible for future generations.” The Welsh Perry & Cider Society’s annual festival, May 26-29, will give the public an opportunity to taste these old varieties for themselves in a tutored blending masterclass. The Macular Society This year the Macular Society is celebrating thirty years of research, support and specialised help to thousands of people. The charity supports people who have sight loss due to damage to their macula. There are many types of macular disease, age–related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common and, as the name suggests, it mainly affects older people. Over 600,000 people in Britain have AMD and it is suggested that 200 people a day are diagnosed with the condition. AMD affects 1 in 2,000 people aged 60+ and 1 in 5 at the age of 90. There are two main forms of AMD, known as ‘wet’ and ‘dry’. There is currently a treatment for the wet type; however, there is no treatment for dry AMD. The symptoms can be gaps, dark spots, objects changing shape, size or disappearing, colours fade, glare from bright lights and straight lines appearing distorted or bent. 13 years ago I was diagnosed with this at the age of 49. I had never heard of it and left the hospital scared, alone and confused. I had been told that I had an old people’s condition and that there was nothing they could do for me. Nowadays in the bigger hospitals
there are ECLO staff (Eye Clinic Liaison Officers) who can give help and advice. During tests I was asked “Can you read the letters on the board?” “What board?” I couldn’t see any board. “How many fingers am I holding up? “No idea, I can only see the top of your head and your feet, everything else is black!” Later that day my husband found the helpline number for the Macular Society online 0300 30 30 111. They were so helpful, with practical advice, giving me lots of information and guiding me in the right direction. Most of all they listened to this scared, worried woman who was having to face a new, unknown way of life. A few years later it affected my other eye as well, but it was easier to understand and accept what was happening. Over the years, the Society has helped me to help others by providing training and support for me to give talks to groups (no charge) and to run a support group here in Lampeter. The Society provided so much help for people with Macular Degeneration: Helpline - over 37,00 have called Counselling – over 11,000 sessions Befriending service – 280 volunteers Tech talk – over 137 tech problems helped Skills for seeing – 2000 people trained to use their sight in a better way Gadget guides – 160 events helping 3000 people Our support group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at St Thomas’ Church Lampeter. We have various speakers, a raffle and always tea and home-made cakes. £2 charge. Everybody is invited, whether you have any form of sight loss or not, whether you are registered or not, also family and friends or if you are just looking to join a friendly group. Our June meeting will be a celebration of 30 years of the Society with a knees up party in fancy dress. During the last week of June, I will be having a table full of information in Sainsbury’s and look out for an evening talk in September in the local library. For anyone with sight loss, just remember there is help available; you are not on your own. Diana Williams

Urdd The theme for the arts and crafts competitions at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod was ‘The Future’ and this was certainly ‘food for thought’ for our pupils as they busily created and prepared their work. Once again this year their products were praised by the judges in the County round where 37 prizes were won (14 x 1st, 15 x 2nd and 8 x 3rd). The winning items have now been sent on to the National round and we have our fingers crossed for further success.

Christian Aid
School Council
At the beginning of May the Religious Education department held a special school assembly to draw attention to Christian Aid Week. Hearing that the charity was first set up to help refugees during the 2WW and that they are still helping refugees today, over 70 years later, was certainly ‘food for thought’ and motivated the pupils to raise further awareness of the charities’ work and to raise money.
The spring term was another busy term for the School council who met several times. Among the matters discussed were ‘Ceredigion Youth Outreach – Community Profiling’, the Welsh Government’s survey into the 2018 – 2019 term dates, class rules, traffic in the school vicinity and the use of the school field. The council also decided to support three charities during the term – Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Bake for Bopath and Comic Relief, and arranged various activities to raise awareness and money. The school council was very proud of the honour received form ‘Comic Relief’/Red nose day, and being acknowledged a ‘Super School’ in recognition of the support given to the charity.

Careers ‘Going for Profit’ was the theme of the recent year 9 careers day led by Careers Wales, when they were placed into teams and given tasks regarding setting up a ‘pizza’ business. We were pleased to welcome Emma Dunn and Claire Jenkins from the Lampeter Sainsbury’s store to adjudicate the final presentations and award the winners.

Electric Cars …. Are they viable? (Supplemental) It was great to have a lot of interest in my article in the May edition of the Grapevine. So I thought I would follow it up with my latest findings. I have now ordered my EV (Electric Vehicle) as I now know is how they are referred to. Some more interesting information has come to light. One of the criticisms of EVs is that energy still has to be produced in a coal, oil or gas burning power station to charge the EV. This is no doubt true. However there have been occasions lately when the UKs coal powered stations have apparently, been able to switch off for 24 hour periods at a time. So reliance on the dirtiest fossil fuels are reducing. I can’t help thinking that producing the concentrated pollution direct from a petrol or diesel engine in a town or city centre, right next to vulnerable people is not as favourable as a distant power station. But I accept this is still not ideal. So taking the issue seriously I wanted to find out more. I investigated switching to
Good News in Llangybi On Palm Sunday this year, St Cybi’s Church in Llangybi held its first special event for many years, for the benefit of Primary school age children in the parish and surrounding areas. Though relatively few in number, the gathering was enjoyed by the children and accompanying adults; as a result more events are planned. We hope to see the numbers attending grow to the extent that the church is no longer big enough and we need to move on to a larger more spacious meeting place. It is not easy to decide the best day
Ecotricity. Something that I had been meaning to do for some time, but spurned on now by the availability of their Plug-in points at motorway services, and other places. To remind you, all their power comes from renewables. Ecotricity were extremely easy to deal with, very helpful and you could sense their drive was the promotion of Renewables rather than just selling you their electricity (and gas). They were no more expensive than my existing supplier. (I had always assumed you would have to pay a small premium for Renewables). I happened to mention I was getting an EV and another level of customer care opened up for me. Firstly, they would give me a £40 gift just for changing to an EV. Secondly, as a customer of theirs, I could have 52 free charge ups a year at any of their Plug-in points. These are £6 a charge. I don’t intend to use them very often because I can charge from home from my domestic supply, as can anyone who has their own outside, off-road electricity supply. Their charging points do not extend to West Wales yet. What this does mean
however, is that I can do my occasional trips to London for free and using wind and sun energy to get me there. It may take an hour longer because of the time of the recharges (I estimate two but I have yet to do it), and I would normally stop for 30 minutes anyway. Thirdly, if you ask, they will make a donation to the Labour Party who are encouraging the switch to Renewables. I have found out the Falcondale Hotel have a charging point, which can be used for free, if you are a customer of theirs, and Llanerchaeron also have a charging point in the National Trust car park. Do you know of any more in the area? Please let the GV know. Gary Thorogood
or time for the group to meet and so, for at least the next two meetings, the day and time will vary and we will consult with the families who become involved before we make a final decision as to time and day for future gatherings. Our next meeting planned for Saturday, 3 June is entitled “Wind and Fire” and will involve exciting activities (including lighting a fire outside and cooking a snack), stories and time to chat and a very short act of worship. Our July event “Let’s go fishing” will again involve series, activities, including a bit of acting and an unusual kind of fishing and again a
short act of worship and refreshments. These meeting are open to all primary age children living in the area, whether or not they or their families are churchgoers. All are welcome. Each session will be about an hour / hour and a half in length and it would be really lovely if parents / carers / guardians would like to stay and join in. It is a good chance for newcomers to make new friends and for old friends to have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee. Please come and join us in June! We would love to meet you! INGREDIENTS 100g fresh Wild Garlic leaves (washed) 60g hazelnuts (shelled) 60g Parmesan cheese (freshly grated) 100-160ml good quality olive oil, depending on how oily you like your pesto Salt and black pepper, to taste
COPPICEWOOD PESTO It’s such a buzz to get your food for free, to smell that distinctive aroma of wild garlic as you approach the patch. This pesto gives you a great excuse for a foraging walk and makes a great addition to pasta dishes or chicken. So where does the coppicing come into it? It’s June now and taking a walk in the woods will be rewarded with all the woodland wildflowers that have sprung up to carpet the ground. On sites of old coppice, restarting this traditional process can kick-start or rejuvenate the woodland. Coppicing allows light to the woodland floor, which allows ground flora, like wild garlic, to flourish. Coppicing an area of over-stood ancient woodland could also lead to dormant seeds springing up, I’ve even read that some seeds can stay dormant in the ground for up to 60 years. One of the most popular coppice trees is the hazel (or cobnut as it’s known down in Kent) which could be a source of your hazelnuts for this recipe. You’d have to get up pretty early in the morning though to beat the grey squirrels to them. I’ve never managed to find wild hazelnuts myself, so it was off to the local organic shop for me. Actually, I wonder what this pesto might taste like with a bit of squirrel? I imagine to the coppice manager that could be a very satisfying dish. www.facebook.com/woodlandclassroom
METHOD This simple technique makes use of every lazy chefs friend, the food processor, but if you want to make it more traditionally you could chop the ingredients finer and use a pestle and mortar. 1. Lightly toast the hazelnuts in a frying pan with a little olive oil. 2. Roughly chop up the washed wild garlic leaves and throw them into a food processor. 3. Throw the hazelnuts, parmesan, salt & pepper into the food processor and whizz them up. 4. Slowly add the olive oil through the top funnel of the food processor until you reach the consistency you like. 5. Spoon your pesto into a clean jar and once settled, pour sufficient olive oil on top of the mix to keep your pesto sealed. Twist the lid on and store in the fridge. Your pesto should keep for several weeks. Lea Wakeman

Karen’s Creative Compendium 025 Plenty of food for thought in this month’s KCC, both actual and metaphorical. Food to share - although not necessarily with whom we might choose according to Nikola - food to take with us, on a picnic with Mandy, from Maj food of love we might wish to clutch, Derek’s singing food unripe to pluck, Polly’s food on the wing - but not for eating, Stan’s food both given and taken. In all, a menu of creative delight, poems to savour and argue over. Please keep them coming, Pob hwyl, Karen

Gardener’s Woe
By Maj Ikle Is our custodian of calm, Time? So elastic and plastic and thin. Or is it purely a technique for keeping track When we want something looking back? Perhaps she's a gentle nurse, Tucking souvenir tickets into our top pockets. Tendernesses we clutch like sweets, Unwilling to urge toward the rat race Like when I pulled you from beneath a truncheon Moments before it split open your girlish face The day you wanted something from me but I gave you only words Wasn't it you who said isn't it time we grew up? Tumbling through hourglass figures To settle stubbornly on the underside of our hips. Scorching moist elastin into a salty dry skin That cannot be rubbed young. Never stretching her languid hand back again Nor preening in the heat wave of unlimited opportunity. Now she's truncating, cooling and separating, Breaking us like flotsam floating away still. My nemesis moving fast forward Intent on her terrified kill.

The long, hot summer holidays we longed for the beach nagged her until she rummaged for the windbreak threw together a picnic then we’d be off in the Ford Cortina through lanes foaming with cow parsley to Fairlight Cove. Down the cliff we ran each carrying a duffle bag stuffed with towel and underwear already in our costumes so we could rush at the sea.
Wheeling, diving, singing, gliding, Ecstatic in their ancient flying; I long to go where they have gone Like Seventh Men of Stapledon. To be alive in every moment And not revisit every torment; To change, to breathe, Release myself from past love aching, The plaster bed of my own making. I watch these modern dinosaurs And with them feel my spirit soar: Feel their joy in sky ascending, A flight of fancy, never ending.
