Great Design People talk about things being classic designs modern designs or retro design. Today we sell our Panton lamps in more than 50 countries around the world. In some countries people like the lamps because they see them as modern design. In other countries they like them because they see them as classic design and some people like them because they see them as retro design. Panton lamps and designs are all of the above and that is what makes them so unique and timeless. I truly believe that there is a design category that should simply be called Great Design. Designs in this category speak directly to your heart and emotions and they can make an impression on people around the world no matter where or when. I hope you will enjoy the world of Verner Panton´s Great Designs.

Take me back

Verner Panton (1926-1998), the Danish designer who made Switzerland his home, was much more than a master of sixties’ design. Even though he favoured extravagant designs and the use of strong, vibrant colors, his work was unmistakably rooted in the elegant functionalism of the 1950s. And notwithstanding the fertile imagination and love of experimentation his work demonstrates, he remained a systematic designer thoughout his entire life, who was not content to merely create individual objects, but sought to develop a collection and design the entire room. As such, it is hardly surprising that Verner Panton’s extraordinarily comprehensive and diverse work, to which the Vitra Design Museum is now devoting a far-reaching retrospective, is thought to constitute a considerable contribution to the development of design in the second half of the 20th century.

31

In spite of its close formal resemblance to the VP Globe, the Panto Lamp creates a very different light quality. Its use of lighting techniques is comparable to the Flower Pot. Apart from the acrylic dish, the main difference between these models consists in the fact that the role of the large reflector in the Flower Pot is taken over in the Panto lamp by three shades arranged on top of each other, which divert the light rays downwards. A close relative of the VP Globe is the Ellipse Lamp, designed in the early 1970s. Yet only one model of this lamp was produced, which hung for a long period in Panton’s work room, entirely decorated in shades of blue. It is most likely that the highly complicated and consequently expensive interior of the Ellipse Lamps prevented them from being produced in series. In addition to the lamps already mentioned, Panton resorted to simple geometric forms when designing the Illumesa lamp table (1969), the Spy Lamp (1971) and the cubic light sculptures and dodecahedrons that he designed especially for the exhibition Light and Colour in 1998 in Kolding. All these lamps have one thing in common: they were made of translucent materials, so that they could be seen in the dark as fluorescent objects rather than as lamps in the classical sense. The most impressive examples of lamps with organic, occasionally rampant, growing forms, include not only the Fun Lamp (1964), one variant of which was produced with aluminium discs, but also the Ball Lamp and Spiral Lamp (both 1970), which were all marketed by J. Lüber Ltd. in Basel. The Fun Lamp consists of a number of thin circular discs cut from a certain type of shell. This lamp is a rare example of how Panton used metal rings hanging either from a top plate or from a staggered system of metal hoops in highly varied

structural formations. Panton particularly liked to combine the shell discs like bunches of grapes, each lit by a single light bulb; when observed from the side, there form approached that of an octagon. When three such bunches of grapes hang above each other the discs serve to spread and reflect the light, thanks to their shimmering mother-of-pearl splendour. This effect is particularly impressive when a gentle movement of air sets in motion the delicate discs, which then twinkle like the play of sunlight on the surface of the sea; the sound of tinkling as they softly collide against one another emphasises the fairy-tale character of these poetic lamps. Panton’s appreciation of the Fun Lamp and his skill in putting it to good effect was apparent from the dining room in his house in Basel. The entire ceiling of this room was so that visitors had the impression of being in a dripstone cave. The Spiral lamps, exhibited for the first time at Visiona 2, consist of various lengths of thin plastic strips twisted like a corkscrew, which were made either of coloured or chromium-plated synthetic materials. They are constructed in similar fashion to the shell lamps, except that their individual components are considerably larger and connected with nylon threads. The Spiral lamps likewise acquire extremely charming characteristics whenever a stream of air sets the multiple parts of the construction in motion. Each spiral begins to turn on its’ axis, lending the lamps a curiously lively appearance. Most impressive of all is the effect of the revolving spirals in the chromium-plated version, in which the surrounding space is reflected in countless tiny broken fragments. Seen from afar, the wave-like reflections of light make this lamp shimmer like a sun-bathed waterfall.

33

34

The very size of the VP Globe (available with a diameter of between 40 and 50 cm) meant that it was largely used as a single lamp. In some cases, however, Panton used these lamps in large numbers - for example, in the creation of the lobby in the Gruner & Jahr publishing house in Hamburg (1973).

36

“I am not fond of white. The world would be more beautiful without it. There should be a tax on white paint. There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours. A colour must be judged in the context of other colours - never alone. People get annoyed if one likes colours. They also get annoyed at people with imagination. Most people want what they are used to. Goethe painted the rooms in his Weimar house in different colours. Unwanted guests got a cold blue room which made them leave faster. The dining-room was in warm yellow; there is always sun in a yellow room. Goethe himself worked in a green garden room. Dark-eyed people are much more sensitive to colour than light-eyed people. On the other hand light-eyed people are more sensitive to forms. (Verner Panton - from the book Notes on Colour).
