VEGANUARY CHANGES PEOPLE’S LIVES
One of the most exciting things about taking part in Veganuary is our participants never know what a month of plant-based eating will do for them. Commonly, we hear of improved digestion, clearer skin, better sleep and more energy, but often the benefits are even more profound. This is what Veganuary has meant for four former participants:
CHRISTINA, MERSEYSIDE

Christina had been suffering for many years with an allergic reaction although doctors had never been able to pinpoint the culprit. Christina suffered regular flare-ups which caused whole-body itching, her face to swell and problems breathing. It was terrifying, the medication only barely helped, but there was no end in sight. Christina actually signed up to take part in Veganuary because she had heard about the suffering in the egg and dairy industries and, although her motivation was ethical, she experienced massive - and very fast - improvements in her health. Five years on, Christina – still a vegan – takes needs no medication at all and has experienced no flare ups. Those terrible days are, it seems, gone forever.
MORNÉ, LONDON
Morné and his partner had also watched The Game
Changers, and since both work in healthcare, they decided to give Veganuary a go. Morné describes this as the best life decision he has ever made, and alongside more energy, better digestion, quicker recovery from exercise, and peace of mind, he found his cholesterol levels tumbled. ‘I did a cholesterol check as I come from a family where some males are prone to having high cholesterol and heart issues,’ he says. ‘I was so amazed to see a decrease into the healthy range after only three or four months. I have never felt better!’
Maria had tried every diet under the sun, but none had worked. She decided to try Veganuary. After watching The Game Changers documentary, her ‘committed carnivore’ husband Dez, who has leukaemia, decided to join her. ‘It’s changed our lives!’ says Maria. ‘My mental health improved, I have more energy, I am less bloated, I sleep better, my skin is better, I have less aches and pains that I put down to getting older. I just feel alive again.’ Maria has lost 50 lbs, and Dez 32. Best of all Dez’s stats are all stable and he hasn’t needed antibiotics at all. ‘We don’t know if this is due to being vegan, but this is the only thing that has changed and that speaks volumes.’
AFTER
SHEREEN, SHEFFIELD
As a competing boxer, Shereen’s weight is constantly watched and has to be managed. Having conducted her own research into the benefits to athletes of eating a plant-based diet, she decided to give it a try, and took part in Veganuary 2020. She found she lost weight simply by changing to a vegan diet, without any thought of ‘dieting’. She lost body fat, became leaner and her weight no longer fluctuates. ‘My coach noticed a difference in training, particularly in terms of endurance,’ she says. ‘I could work harder for longer without tiring as much as I used to, like I was running off a better fuel source.’
Veganuary is a charity (registered in England and Wales no. 1168566) that encourages people worldwide to try vegan for January and beyond.
