We are delighted to open and close the season with two Leeds International Piano Competition finalists, the Korean-born Sunwook Kim and Lancashire-born Kathryn Stott. The New York-based Escher Quartet will visit us on their next UK tour with an unmissable programme. Household names of the classical world, Emma Johnson and John Lill, will perform their favourite Brahms and Schumann pieces, and the engaging virtuoso violinists Jack Liebeck and Giovanni Guzzo also feature, as does percussion-genius, Joby Burgess. The uniquely talented Venezuelan pianist-improviser, Gabriela Montero, returns by very popular demand with Manchester Camerata. We celebrate a generation of young talent with the RNCM and Chethams, who both bring breathtaking programmes with enormous symphony orchestras to the hall. There are concerts to lift the soul, some to lose yourself completely and others that will provoke deep thought. But be sure that the experience of hearing great music performed live will enrich and enliven your Thursday evenings! I warmly welcome you to join us for a concert soon. DEBUSSY La Mer RAVEL Piano Concerto in G major DEBUSSY *Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune SCRIABIN Poem of Ecstasy Op.54

The magnificent RNCM Symphony Orchestra performs in all its glory under the baton of the eminent maestro, En Shao. Returning by overwhelming demand, this exceptional orchestra presents a rich and evocative programme featuring three milestones of the French impressionists, followed by the completely other-worldly masterpiece, Scriabin’s Poem of Ecstasy - be prepared to lose yourself in musical heaven! 6.45pm Pre-Concert Talk

SCHUMANN Fantasiestücke Op.73 BRAHMS Two Rhapsodies Op.79 BRAHMS Clarinet Sonata Op.120 No.1 in f minor SCHUMANN Romanzen Op.94 BRAHMS Three Intermezzi Op.117 BRAHMS Clarinet Sonata Op.120 No.2 in E Flat major

Upon winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year, Emma Johnson transformed the profile of her instrument overnight, inspiring generations of young clarinetists who followed her. She performs a beguiling evening of works by Schumann and Brahms with her chamber music partner (and titan of the piano) John Lill, who will also perform Brahms’ effervescent Intermezzi and Rhapsodies for solo piano. 6.45pm Foyer Music

PÄRT Fratres DESENNE The Two Seasons of the Caribbean Tropics BRITTEN Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, Op.10 MOZART Piano Concerto No.14 in E-flat major, K.449 MONTERO Improvisations on audience requests This dynamic programme features Venezuelan-born musicians Gabriela Montero and Giovanni Guzzo, artists

whose music brims with energy and colour. Montero who is famed for her extraordinary improvisatory talents, returns by very popular demand to play Mozart’s mighty Piano Concerto No.14 followed by some audienceinspired improvisations. The concert also includes the mesmerising Fratres by Arvo Pärt, Paul Desenne’s exotic Two Seasons, performed by the superlative Manchester Camerata. 6.45pm Pre-Concert Talk

M.BERGMANN Magnificat II toni SWEELINCK Ricercar del nono tono J.S.BACH Komm, heiliger Geist PURCELL A Voluntary ‘for ye double organ’ BÖHM Partita: Freu dich sehr meine Seele KREBS Toccata and Fugue in E major

It is a great delight to present Lancaster University’s newly appointed University Organist, Michael Wynne. Michael will lead us through a fascinating musical exploration of our instrument, in a selection of works designed to help us hear it at its finest. Michael also offers the audience a chance to inspect and try the instrument during a unique hands-on pre-concert talk. 6.45pm Pre-Concert Talk

MOZART String Quartet No. 21 in D major, K. 575 Prussian No.1 BARTÓK Quartet No.1 SCHUBERT Quartet in D Minor Death and the Maiden *In-the-Round We’re very excited to welcome the incredible New York-based Escher String Quartet to Lancaster. They perform a concert which concludes with the incomparable Death and the Maiden quartet - one of

the pillars of the chamber music repertoire. The centerpiece is Bartók’s exquisite and dramatic 1st string quartet, preceded by the pure perfection of Mozart’s Prussian. The Eschers will perform in the round, giving every member of the audience an intimate opportunity to experience chamber music at its best. 6.45pm Foyer Music

ROSSINI Thieving Magpie Overture SHOSTAKOVICH Violin Concerto No.1 RESPIGHI Pines and Fountains of Rome The exceptional talent of Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra is displayed in a virtuoso programme which opens with Rossini's irresistible operatic overture. One of ‘Chet’s’ most promising young

soloists, Coco Inman, performs Shostakovich’s 1st Violin Concerto. The crestfallen composer had fallen out of favour with Stalin and was intensely paranoid by now. Upon completion, he locked the concerto away and was unable to write a note for two years. The grand finale of the evening is Respighi’s extraordinary portrait of Italy – a vibrant and instantly lovable masterpiece. 6.45pm Foyer Music

NICOLE LIZÉE New Work (world premiere) TORU TAKEMITSU Seasons MORTON FELDMAN King of Denmark IANNIS XENAKIS Psappha Pioneers of Percussion brings together pioneering solo works from the most innovative and creative composers of the 20th Century. Takemitsu’s Seasons explores our changing ecology through a delicate metallic landscape,

whilst Psappha explodes with muscular and abrasive rhythm taken from ancient Greek text. Feldman's great antipercussion composition twinkles like stars in the night and we hear a world premiere by ‘brilliant musical scientist’ Nicole Lizée, inspired by the glitches of outmoded and wellworn technology. Joby Burgess supplies the ‘Wow factor – hauntingly tribal at one moment and fantastically futuristic at another.’ 6.45pm Pre-Concert Talk

BRAHMS Violin Sonata No.1 in G major Op.78 BRIDGE Violin Sonata H183 DEBUSSY Sonata for Violin and Piano in G minor CORIGLIANO Violin Sonata Since Jack Liebeck made his concerto debut with the Hallé Orchestra aged 15, he has gone on to perform all over Europe, Asia and the USA and is fast becoming a national treasure. He pairs two

extremely well-loved violin sonatas by Brahms and Debussy with two far too rarely heard ones. However, it is always rewarding to get to know works by English composer Frank Bridge and the grand Corigliano sonata is a tour de force for the violin which promises an immensely enjoyable end to this concert. 6.45pm Foyer Music

BACH Prelude and Fugue No.1 GRIEG Holberg Suite RACHMANINOV Variations on theme of Corelli RAVEL Tombeau de Couperin SHOSTAKOVICH Prelude and Fugue no.24 *In-the-Round Kathryn Stott is one of the UK’s most creative, imaginative and versatile pianists. Her concert is flanked by Bach’s first and Shostakovich’s last Prelude

and Fugue, two sets of some of the most inventive music ever written for the piano. Kathryn will also perform the ever popular Holberg Suite in its original version for piano solo, the dazzling Corelli Variations ‘La Folia’ and Ravel’s enchanting and virtuosic Tombeau de Couperin. We promise you an uplifting finale concert which will make your heart sing!

We promise you an uplifting finale concert which will make your heart sing!

extremely well-loved violin sonatas by Brahms and Debussy with two far too rarely heard ones.

*In-the-Round When the 18-year-old South Korean pianist Sunwook Kim won the Leeds International Piano competition in 2006, joining the likes of Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu and Artur Pizarro, he became the youngest ever player to do so. He has since carved an enviable reputation for his mature performances of the great composers, and we will enjoy an evening of great pianistic indulgence with him, ending in Beethoven’s monumental Diabelli Variations. 6.45pm Foyer Music

At tHe GReAt HAll
