A partnership between Lancaster City Council and local re-use charity Furniture Matters

Bulky Matters enables you to dispose of unwanted household items

Bulky Matters has been operating across the district since June 2006.

AND help local disadvantaged people and the environment at the same time - it couldn’t be simpler or easier to arrange!

Since then the partnership has:

To book an appointment contact Lancaster City Council’s Customer Services department on 01524 582491 and we will guarantee to collect your unwanted items within 7 working days, on a day to suit you. Collections can be booked during the day Monday to Friday, and we also operate on a Thursday evening and all day on Saturday for those customers who are unable to arrange a collection during the week. We want to collect from inside your home, which means items won’t get wet or vandalised, and are therefore more likely to be reusable. Each collection costs £18 for up to 3 items, with additional items costing £6 each. Any household in receipt of either Council Tax or Housing Benefit is eligible for a 50% discount on collections.

Bulky Matters Your re-usable items can help local disadvantaged people furnish their homes and provide training opportunities too! Do you want to get involved?

Saved over 700 tonnes of household items from needlessly ending up in landfill

Re-distributed over 8,500 re-usable items back into the community

Helped over 4,000 local, low-income families

Assisted local people to achieve over 300 accredited qualifications, helping many to find employment in the process

Generated income from the sale of the items we have saved from the waste stream ~ all of which has been paid back into the Bulky Matters’ budget in order to reduce the cost of the service to local people

Contributed to a reduction of fly tipping in the district ~ due to our speedy collections service and willingness to collect items from inside people’s homes at a time to suit them

Bulky Matters “I’m really happy that my washing machine and sideboard are going to be used by someone else. I hated the thought of them ending up on the tip, and am really glad that I opted to pay for the Bulky Matters’ service” (Mrs Paine, Cockerham)

Furniture Matters have a host of volunteering opportunities available to local people ~ where you can learn new skills, build up work experience for your C.V., meet new people, and make a difference locally ~ both to the environment and to other local people. Whatever your motivation for volunteering ~ whether you want to share skills or learn skills ~ Furniture Matters has volunteering opportunities to suit you! Why not come along and be a retail assistant / van driver / van crew / cycle mechanic / domestic appliance engineer / cleaner / furniture restorer / office worker / call centre operative / warehouse assistant / support worker…..? If you want to make a difference by volunteering, contact Furniture Matters on 01524 427300

“By the time we loaded and then damaged the interior of our car, drove across town,

deposited our bulky items at Salt Ayre and drove back, we realised just how cheap and hassle free the Bulky Matters service was - next time we sorted our house out, we booked the service, it was great, and we will use it from now on!” (Ms Stephenson, Lancaster)
