Easter 2013 Programme Come and join Lancaster City Council for two weeks of activities that are guaranteed to keep you busy during the Easter holiday. Spring is upon us and what better way to spend your Easter holiday than dashing outdoors and taking part in one of our exciting activities on offer in the Lancaster and Morecambe area? Nature lovers won’t be disappointed as we have exciting new activities such as animal care with the zookeepers at Williamson Park, crabbing and rock pooling in Morecambe Bay as well as old favourites such as bug hunting and a habitat trail quiz. If you like sportier school holidays then why not try ice skating, archery or wakeboarding or mix it up with a FIFA 2013 Xbox challenge and five-a-side competition?

How to use this guide The details for all of our holiday activities can be found in this brochure, listed in both A to Z format and in a day by day format. The back page also has an ‘at a glance’ section that lists all the activities in date order. Please note that each workshop has different requirements e.g. age, specific clothing, venues vary and transport is sometimes provided. Please see each workshop individually. Please also note that due to some workshops being outdoors they are weather dependant and can be cancelled on the day. If you are concerned on the day if a particular activity is running or not, please contact Salt Ayre Sports Centre for confirmation.

PLEASE NOTE: A responsible adult must stay on site during any workshop for children under 8 years old. Parents are expected to take part with their child in some workshops. Please note that booking is required for all Lancaster City Council activities including all FREE activities using the methods below. Any activities that are provided by Heysham, Carnforth and Hornby Swimming Pools, Lancaster museums or Lancaster Castle must be booked directly with them. Full contact details are provided throughout this booklet. 1. To book and pay in person Bookings with cash and card payments can be made in person by visiting Salt Ayre Sports Centre between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday, or between 8.30am and 6pm Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to have a fully completed booking form for each applicant and your payment.

Additional Information Activity information - We strongly advise that all participants wear suitable clothing for the activity that they are due to take part in. Information about suitable clothing or requirements for each session can be found in pages 12 to 22. Disabled access - Where possible, we use premises which are fully accessible. If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact the holiday activity team on 01524 582825. Passport to Leisure holders - If your child has or is included on a Passport to Leisure card, they are entitled to £1 discount per activity. A-Z - Activity Guide Sports, arts, nature and play activities provided by Lancaster City Council Abseiling / kayaking NEW! Abseil down the rocky crags of the Lake District and then try some kayaking on Lake Windermere. Learn how to paddle, turn and get great speed through a series of fun games like kayak surfing. The session will be run by the YMCA Lakeland Centre's qualified and experienced instructors.

Animal care with the zookeepers NEW! As part of National Pet Month our zookeepers will be holding a pet care session at the zoo in Williamson Park. Come along and find out about looking after rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes, lizards and creepy crawlies. Get the chance to handle some of the zoo’s animals and find out more about how they live.

Archery If you fancy becoming the next Robin Hood, why not come along and try your hand at archery? We will teach you all the skills needed to hit the board every time. You will take part in team games, individual games, scoring games and balloon popping. This course is ideal for beginners.

Art from Nature A stick, some moss and a few leaves could become a horse, dragon or a sculpture of you! Let your imagination run wild and create artworks using natural materials that you will collect from around the park. At the end of the session you get to take your masterpieces home.

Badge swim This is a great opportunity to test your swimming and get rewarded for your efforts. You can swim up to 5,000 metres in our badge swim session at Hornby Pool. Come and have a go and see how far you can swim. A badge and certificate are included in the price.

Basketball NEW! This brand new session will have you flying through the air and shooting some hoops. As well as learning new skills you’ll also take part in some small sided basketball games.

Blue, Green, Yellow, Dead - live action zombie game It's dark, claustrophobic - you have a mission - to find three vials - Blue... Green... Yellow... If you don't you could end up DEAD! You’re armed with a high quality paintball gun... there are trapdoors, confined spaces and dead ends and then there are the zombies... time is short... can you succeed? Will you survive? Please note that the paintball guns are only used to shoot zombies (not each other). You must be of a reasonable level of fitness to participate in this activity.

Bug hunt This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the woodlands and discover creepy crawlies by using our special bug hunting equipment. 6


Did you know? All our holiday activities are run by trained professionals who are experts at working with young people. Whatever you get up to this holiday, rest assured that you will be in safe hands! Clay faces Explore your surroundings and create masterpieces out of natural resources. We will provide the clay you provide your imagination.

Crabbing NEW! Join us as we hunt out the crabs that live in Morecambe Bay. Learn some interesting facts about these fascinating creatures and discover all the different species that live along our shore. Make a splash this half term with two hours of mayhem in Salt Ayre pool. You'll love racing along our spooky inflatable ghost ship and playing with our huge range of inflatable toys and floats. The water slide and spa pool are open and there's great music to get you in the party mood. The baby pool will also be open so that younger children can have fun too.

Crown green bowling bonanza Bowls is a great sport that's suitable for all. The session teaches you the basics of the game and lets you test your new skills in a number of fun games and activities.

Cycle games If you know how to cycle, then why not try the challenge of playing some games whilst riding your bike? Enjoy competing in pairs or in teams with activities such as the slalom and cone-heads to name but a few. Challenge yourself to do the balance box and many more exciting games in this fun and active session.

Diving school Learn how to dive with our fully qualified swimming teacher. In this session you’ll learn how to perform sitting and standing dives, swim through hoops and dive down to the bottom of the deep end for treasure.

Dodgeball Get yourself down to Salt Ayre to have a go at this totally crazy sport. This action packed two hour session will allow you to gain the skills needed to take part in a series of dodgeball matches that will test your co-ordination, movement and balance. So why not come along, learn a new sport and have a fun and fantastic time?

Easter craft and swim NEW! Join us for a two hour session of Easter arts and crafts followed by an hour of fun in the pool with the floats. Make your own jewellery, greetings cards, bookmarks and lots more. We supply all the materials, you provide the imagination. Sports, arts and museum courses for children and young people.

Crazy inflatable fun


Easter egg hunt at the zoo NEW! Come and join our Easter egg hunt around Williamson Park in Lancaster. Help our zookeepers solve the animal clues around the butterfly house, zoo and wildlife trail to find the hidden treasure and then get creative with an Easter themed arts and crafts session in the education room.

Extreme Sports Calling all you adrenaline junkies! Test your nerves with two indoor skydives at Airkix (airkix.com) where you'll experience the thrill of skydiving indoors.* After you've landed, it's time to hit the slopes at Chill Factore with an hour of snowboarding lessons, a climbing wall experience and finally a return to the slopes with a fun luging session. All the activities are supervised by experienced, qualified coaches and all the equipment is supplied. This activity would normally cost you £94, however we can offer it to you for the bargain price of only £35. *To take your skydiving experience to the max, why not dare to try the high-flyer challenge using a 30ft high chamber? If you are up for it, this experience will cost an extra £5 per person on the day.

Fencing Come and learn the noble art of fencing and take your first steps to becoming the next Musketeer “all for one and one for all”. This introductory session will teach you all the correct techniques you will need to complete the fencing competition at the end of the session. This course is ideal for beginners.

FIFA 13 Xbox challenge and 5-a-side football NEW! It's in the game! If you fancy becoming the FIFA 13 Xbox challenge champion then come down to Salt Ayre Sports Centre and show off your gaming skills. The challenge will consist of you competing against other players one-on-one and hopefully making it all the way to the final. The winner and runner up will both receive vouchers for winning from Lees Games in Morecambe. So come along and take up the challenge! As well as the gaming there will also be a series of real football challenges for you to take part in such as a penalty competition, keepy-uppy challenge and football skittles, with spot prizes for the winners of these challenges too! After all the fun and games you will then go and play the game for real taking part in a 5-a-side football competition with medals for the winning team. Footballing fun for everyone!

Fire building Experience the thrill of building safe fires, toasting marshmallows and explore your natural surroundings.

Fishing NEW! If you like your sports a little more relaxed then it doesn't come any better than this. You'll be supervised by a fully qualified and experienced fishing coach throughout the day and provided with all the equipment. All you need to bring is a keen eye to land that 40lb fish. Fishing will be at Cleverley Bridge Fisheries.

Golf coaching NEW! Play golf like the pro's with some expert coaching at Ashton Hall Golf Centre in Lancaster. This activity is ideal for anyone new to the sport and will teach you the basics including striking, putting, and developing your swing. At the end of the session there will be the opprtunity to test your new skills on the driving range plus loads of fun golf related games. The coaching is provided by Lucas Golf. 8


Habitat trail quiz NEW! Come along to this exciting new habitat trail and test your knowledge of the animals that live in Happy Mount Park. On the trail you will discover their habitats and see where the animals live.

Ice Skating NEW! You've watched Dancing on Ice, now it's your turn to find out how easy it is! This very special course is the ultimate day out for anyone interested in ice skating. Your first two hours will be spent with one of the coaches who teach the Hot Ice show skaters. The coach will give you all the basic skills you will need to help you stay on your skates. After lunch we then have one and a half hours of free skating to put your new found skills in to practise.

Indoor climbing Come and try the new indoor climbing wall at the Lancaster University Sports Centre. This session is suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers. You will receive expert tuition on how to overcome the slabs, the vertical and overhanging walls. Please note you MUST wear laced up trainers to take part in this activity.

Indoor junior Olympics Do you fancy being the next Olympic champion? If so this could be your first step in achieving a gold medal in the future. Your all-round athletic skills will be tested during this two hours of action-packed events including long jump, javelin, shot put, sprint and relay.

Indoor mini Olympics As above, but this one and a half hour session is suitable for younger children.

Indoor mini tennis Mini tennis is a fun way for anyone aged between 4 and 7 years to learn the basic skills of tennis. Mini tennis has been designed to allow young players to develop at a speed that suits them. All sessions will be delivered by a professional tennis coach.

Indoor tennis coaching Ideal for beginners, this indoor tennis session introduces you to the basics of tennis including forehand, backhand and volleying. The session will end with a small competition to give you the chance to put your new skills to the test.

Learn to cycle This short course is aimed at children who cannot yet ride or still use stabilisers. Please bring a roadworthy bike which allows the seat to be lowered so that your child can get his/her feet flat on the ground and suitable clothing for being outdoors.

Manchester United football coaching NEW! If you're a football-crazy red devil then this is your chance to train at Manchester United's former training ground, The Cliff. During this full day of coaching you'll train on the massive 3G indoor pitch, where fully qualified Manchester United Foundation coaches will take you through many different aspects of the game from shooting, passing, heading and dribbling. Save some energy for the small sided games and show off your Wayne Rooney finishing or Ryan Giggs dribbling. Morecambe FC v Rotherham United (tour, coaching and match) This is an amazing opportunity to watch our local team take on Rotherham United. Join us for a tour of the Globe Arena and then receive a coaching session from Morecambe FC's own coaches. Finish the day by watching the exciting match against Rotherham United. Fully supervision at all times.

Orienteering Experience the great outdoors with this fun and friendly orienteering session. Learn some map reading skills and try them out on the exciting orienteering course around Williamson Park.

Parachute fun Join in the fun with a number of games under our huge multi-coloured parachute. This activity is ideal for younger children.

Quicksticks hockey Learn new skills and play a fun game of quicksticks. This activity is a whole load of fun and will give you a real taste of the fast and exciting sport of hockey.

Rockpooling NEW! Exploring rock pools is a fascinating beach activity that is suitable for all ages. Join our expert guide as we discover the different species that live in the tidal rock pools of Morecambe Bay. You won’t believe how many different plants and animals live in each pool!

Rookie lifeguard Learn some key lifesaving skills whilst having fun and keeping fit. This special session at Heysham Swimming Pool is the perfect training ground for the lifeguards of the future. You’ll learn lifesaving skills, basic first aid and procedures which one day could save someone’s life.

Rush hockey Experience the exciting new team sport that everyone’s talking about. Rush hockey is a scaled down version of the full game that’s full of quick-fire fun and energy. The game is played indoors through a series of lightening fast matches and is a great introduction to hockey. Why not give it a try?

Skiing for beginners / tubing / luging - family fun This exciting session is ideal for children and parents alike. Learn to ski down the dry-ski slope at Pendle Ski Club and learn how to turn, race and most importantly stop. After the skiing and a spot of lunch the fun keeps on going with a tubing and luging session. This session is lead by the club's own expert instructors and is ideal for beginners. Please note a maximum of two parents per child. Also a maximum of two children per parent. You must attend this workshop with a parent whatever your age and the parent has to pay.

Snorkelling NEW! This is an opportunity to learn the basic skills of snorkelling at Carnforth Pool. This is a two session activity (See ACT 10 and ACT 27), although you can do only one session if preferred. Learn how to apply your mask and snorkel correctly, swim with your snorkel and flippers and then have some fun playing some great underwater games.

Sports Mania This is a great activity for anyone who is mad about sport. Join us in Happy Mount Park and take part in a variety of sports including football, handball, dodgeball and hockey.

Survival adventure day Are you the next Bear Grylls? Join our day long expedition into the wilderness of Warton Crag and explore the beauty of this unspoilt countryside. On our great adventure you’ll learn how to build shelters, cook food, make traps and take part in a hunt for some hidden treasure.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar story and arts session NEW! Come and celebrate Children's Book Day with the zookeepers at Williamson Park. Our adventure begins with a storytelling session in the butterfly house and will finish with an arts and crafts session where you can design and decorate your very own butterfly mobile.

Treasure hunt Can you solve the clues, put together the puzzle and discover where the treasure is hidden? If so come along and take part in this fun and exciting treasure hunt. Will you find the hidden treasure?

Wacky rackets Our wacky rackets session is a great introduction to a number of different racket sports including tennis, short tennis and badminton. This free session will allow you to test your skills whilst playing a number of different games.

Wakeboarding and paddleboarding NEW! Let us take you to Blackpool Wakepark (www.blackpoolwakepark.com) to experience the amazing sport of wakeboarding; a great combination of snowboarding and surfing on water. The wakepark’s new system means there’s no need for a boat and you control the speed as you wakeboard across the lake. Paddleboarding is a great way to relax after wakeboarding and involves standing on a giant surf board and paddling yourself along using a full length single paddle. Why not explore the rest of the lake and take part in races to the island?

Wet and dry day A totally brilliant day not to be missed at Salt Ayre Sports Centre. Starting with a brief introduction about the day’s activities, its off to the pool for our famous fun and floats session until lunchtime. Please note that lunch is not provided but you can take advantage of the excellent menu at the Fresh Ayre cafe. After lunch its off to the main sports hall for an afternoon of sporting fun and mayhem. Included in this action packed afternoon will be dodgeball, football and Danish long ball.
