A Message from the Director

Welcome to Summer Programs at LCDS for 2024!

This guide to our programs for the year includes more programming than ever, with offerings for all ages from preschool through 12th grade. We want LCDS to be your go-to for summer fun and learning!

With everything from kid-favorite Camp LCDS to our continued partnership with Popovsky Performing Arts Studio to summer courses for credit, there’s bound to be a match for your student.

Table of Contents

LCDS consists of half-day or full-day programs for students entering kindergarten through 5th grade. Each week has a child-centered theme with options ranging from science to art to water play.

Eight weeks of Summer PS/JK

Year-round Preschool and Junior Kindergarten

LCDS Preschool and Junior Kindergarten students enrolled for the 2023-24 school year are eligible for early registration. Any remaining spaces will be open to new students who fit our admissions requirements.

*Students must be 3 years old by June 17, 2024 in order to enroll.

Meaningful play is a significant element of learning at LCDS Summer Programs. It encompasses social, emotional, physical, and cognitive benefits that the brain needs to fully develop. Meaningful play also promotes social learning through play with other children. Each child is challenged to live to their full potential in an atmosphere that fosters social, physical, intellectual, and emotional aspects of development.

Enrollment for Summer PS/JK is available through the Admissions Office.

Camp LCDS

8 Weeks of Themed Summer Fun

Join us for a fun-filled summer on the beautiful 27-acre campus of Lancaster Country Day School. Each weeklong session offers classes in visual and performing arts, science, sports, water play and more. A different theme is integrated each week into class activities, which are taught by our talented team of teachers and assistants.

Camp LCDS is designed to provide students the opportunity to explore new endeavors in a safe, supportive environment while having loads of fun! Every morning will include arts and crafts, games, and learning centered on the weekly theme. For full–day campers, the afternoon will include outside time, recreation, and water-play (bathing suits, towels and water shoes required). Students may attend full or half-day. Students attending full-day will need to bring their own packed lunch.

Designed for students entering kindergarten through 5th grade with full-day and half-day options available.

REGISTRATION

Please have your child’s health information and insurance card ready before you begin the online registration process. Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email. You will have the option to pay for camp in full or provide a $50 non-refundable deposit per camp. The balance of tuition is due by May 1. Your card on file will be charged automatically unless other payment arrangements have been made.

CANCELLATION

For Specialty Programs and Camp LCDS, if you cancel before May 1, you will lose your nonrefundable deposit. After May 1, there are no refunds.

Animal Kingdom

Week 1: June 17-21

Take a walk on the ‘wild’ side at LCDS! Learn about animals we don’t see in our own backyards, investigate unique animals and their special adaptations, and share about your favorite wild animal.

Around the World

Week 2: June 24-28

Join us as we travel around the world and visit new countries! We’ll use our imagination, learn about cultures and traditions on other continents through crafts, singing, dances, and games.

Olympics, Fun, and Fitness! We’re bringing one of the world’s greatest traditions, the Summer and Winter Olympics, to LCDS! Compete in events, train like an Olympian, watch highlights of past Olympic events, and bring home the gold.

Legos, blocks, K’Nex, and so much more! Join us for an exciting week of creating and challenges! We will be inventing, fixing, and building with so many different types of materials you’ll have to see it to believe it!

Super Hero

Week 5: July 15-19

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s a superhero! Come ready to save the day! Campers can expect to participate in fun games and activities that involve famous superheroes. Campers can also expect to be creative and come up with their own alter ego.

Solve a Mystery

Week 6: July 22-26

Do you love to solve a good mystery? Do secret codes and languages intrigue you? Then join us as we create invisible ink, analyze fingerprints, break out of an escape room, and so much more!

CAMP FUN WITH

Space is the Place!

Week 7: July 29-August 2

This camp will be out of this world! Join us as we explore the solar system, play space themed games, and even build a rocket. Take off on an adventure to the stars!

Summer Science Station

Week 8: August 5-9

Join us this week for some crazy, fun, and sometimes slimy science experiments. We will laugh, investigate, and learn as we explore the world around us through science.

We will use gloriously fun (and quite silly) children’s stories as the basis for cooking projects for each day’s snack, book-related crafts to take home each day and silly movementbased fun for each day’s specific title. In a nutshell, campers will use their imaginations to explore each book through all of their senses, but most of all they will experience silly fun in a relaxed group setting.

Our young learners will practice vital 21st Century Skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking while having fun with PLAY. All of our play will be interactive and purposeful, including outdoor games, board games, puzzles, STEM toys, handson activities, dramatic play, and building. Based on the interests of the campers, we will work together to transform the room into a playhouse of their choosing (grocery store, firehouse, hospital, etc.) for a fun-filled week of dressup and make-believe!

Allison Burgoyne, LCDS Early Childhood Faculty Snowflakes, candy canes and gingerbread men in July? Yes, please! Join us as we celebrate the winter season during the summer with winter crafts, snacks, STEAM challenges and literary comparisons. Find out what a Ninjabread Man has in common with a Gingerbread Baby, what a snowflake looks like up close and just how fast we can make a candy cane disappear. Stay chilly with us this summer!

Summer is the perfect time to explore all kinds of messy art and science activities. Who doesn’t like a table full of shiny glitter, multiple choices of paints and lots of gooey mud? This camp will focus on letting the children choose what to create and experiment with as they’re led by a teacher who’s not afraid to get messy.

If you’ve ever wanted to be a fantasyaction hero, this is your chance. This is a live-action-role-playing camp. We will be creating our own fantasy characters and then bringing them to life! Think D&D, but actually played out, rather than dice on a table. We will be making costumes, foam weapons and shields, and even fantasy-inspired food. We will also be acting and learning stage-style and LARP combat. Adventure is waiting!

Ever wish you were a student at Hogwarts? Now is your chance! The magic begins the moment you receive your letter of acceptance. Shop for supplies in Diagon Alley, arrive at the Great Hall for a sorting ceremony, and get ready for a full week of witchcraft and wizardry! Classes include Potions, Herbology, Arithmancy, Charms, Care of Magical Creatures, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Divination. This year we explore the world of Harry Potter’s second year at Hogwarts, discover magical creatures, and enjoy a world you never knew existed right here in Lancaster!

Jump into Middle School on the right foot! Come join us to get organized and to prepare for the new school year ahead. This seminar will cover: reviewing English texts, reviewing mathematics, study skills, organizational aids, and computer technology all while participating in fun activities. Who will benefit? Newly enrolled Middle School students, and current LCDS rising 6th and 7th graders wanting to improve their study skills and performance in the classroom.

On vacation for Jump Start? This camp is offered as an alternative to Jump Start, but has many of the same activities. Become familiar with the school, the MS schedule, teachers and meet your fellow classmates. Ease into the school year by reviewing English, math and study skills concepts in a fun and light setting.

Charm & Jewelry Making with Sculpey Clay

Come discover the excitement of working in polymer clay (Sculpey)! In this course you will learn a variety of techniques for creating charms, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and much more. You will learn diverse methods for making beads and simple cane techniques. You will also learn how to attach the necessary metal parts (hooks, clasps, etc) to make your pieces functional. We’ll talk about and practice color mixing to get just the right colors you want. Come with your creative ideas and get ready to have some fun!

Have you ever wanted to learn to shoot a bow and arrow? It’s a great sport and one that takes practice and concentration. This camp will develop archery skills and incorporate fun games and challenges to test your concentration and aim. Beginners or experienced archers are welcome.

Advanced skills, longer distances, and more challenging games to test your concentration and aim. If you enjoyed previous LCDS archery camps you will love taking your skills to the next level! Want to play some Dungeons & Dragons? Then this is the camp for you! D&D is a cooperative, table-top role playing game where dice rolls determine success and failure. We will create our own unique characters and lead them through a fantastic world of elves, goblins, and wizards. This camp is perfect for kids who love board games, fantasy books, and creating their own characters and worlds. Let’s dungeon!

Are you interested in the politics of the world? Why is the war in Ukraine happening? Who should host the next World Cup? And what’s up with North Korea? These questions and more will be explored at this camp! We will investigate and come up with our own solutions to global issues. We will also engage in simulations where you will lead your own countries in tense negotiations. Let’s learn, and let’s have fun!

SAT Prep Course

Mary Turner & Chelsea Pomponio, LCDS US Faculty

This course is designed to prepare students for the SAT, as well as the PSAT, due to their similar formats. Students will be introduced to the format of the test, review the math and English content, and discuss strategies for success. Students should expect to spend time outside of class each day taking a practice test in preparation for the next day. In addition to content review, the new digital format will be addressed.

Popovsky Performing Arts Camps

Embark on an exhilarating journey as we return to the Lancaster Country Day School’s state-of-the-art Gardner Theatre for our summer programs! Nestled within a professional theater environment complete with lights, curtains, microphones, costumes, and set pieces, campers are in for an enchanting experience as they step onto a world-class stage.

Our dynamic and educational summer camp programs are meticulously designed to guide performers through developing skills, cultivating confidence, and fostering a tight-knit community. Our curriculum nurtures creativity and establishes a robust foundation in acting, singing, and dance.

Exciting news for this year! Introducing our all-new Skills Camps, a response to the enthusiastic feedback from our camp families. In direct response to your requests for more flexible opportunities to enhance skills without the commitment of a two-week production camp, we’re thrilled to offer three specialized one-week camps. Dive into a focused week of skill refinement, whether you’re looking to strengthen your audition techniques, polish your acting abilities, elevate your singing prowess, or fine-tune your dance moves. These carefully curated camps provide the perfect platform for honing your talents in a condensed, yet intensive, format. Don’t miss the chance to elevate your performing arts skills with our dynamic and specialized Skills Camps!

PERFORMANCE

INFORMATION:

All production camps will have two performances on the final Friday of camp. Performances will be held at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. as Double Feature Shows with a brief intermission.

STAFF INFORMATION:

Meet the exceptional team behind the scenes! Summer Camps are directed by PPAS owners Christyn Rutter and Michael Popovsky, along with Studio Manager Megan Charlesworth and our on-site camp director, Lancaster Country Day School teacher Steffan Bomberger. Our camp staff is a group of Teaching Artists made up of a blend of PPAS teachers, theater and education professionals, and Lancaster Country Day School’s Summer Staff members. For our younger camps, we enlist the assistance of high school interns, creating a diverse and supportive environment.

Every Teaching Artist is carefully selected for their expertise in guiding and motivating young performers and their experience in theater and the performing arts. All camp staff undergo thorough background checks, which are mandated in all educational environments in Pennsylvania. Additionally, each staff member will complete specialized training, ensuring they are well-equipped to contribute to the success and wellbeing of our campers. ABOUT THIS CAMP

Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves. ABOUT THIS CAMP

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child, who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton’s challenge is twofold — not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! This two week camp concludes with performances in the Gardner Theatre on July 26.

ABOUT THIS CAMP

Some of the most iconic shows were written between 1975 and 2000. In this one week camp, performers will get to learn songs, scenes, and choreography from some of the most celebrated shows of all time! Shows from this era include: Sweeney Todd, Les Misérables, Little Shop of Horrors, The Phantom of the Opera, Aida, Mamma Mia!, and Seussical, just to name a few. Students will improve their ability to shine on stage and be a true triple threat in this exciting and fast paced camp! Please note that this camp does NOT end with a public performance.

For-Credit Courses

Lancaster Country Day School for-credit summer courses cover the content of academic year and trimester classes, allowing students to advance, or to focus on a particular area of study for approximately five weeks in the summer. Classes will be open to students from other schools, with a minimum class size of five students and a maximum class size of 17 students.

The full-year courses are worth 1.00 credit and trimester courses are worth .33 credits, equivalent to an LCDS Upper School class held during the academic year or trimester. The credits will appear on an LCDS transcript. For five weeks in June to July, courses meet daily from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. The cost for each course is $800 per 1 credit course and $265 per .33 credit course.

Registration is on a firstcome, first-serve basis. Prior to enrollment, students from other schools should contact their school guidance counselor to confirm credit transfer and acceptance.

ENTERING 8–10

Honors Geometry

Prerequisite(s): A grade of B+ or higher in Algebra I, or permission of the Algebra I instructor

Everyday, students should be prepared to learn new material and have about 60-120 minutes of homework due the next morning. Every other class, there will be a 70-minute test that covers the material from that chapter. After a break, we start the next chapter in the second part of class. The following day consists of finishing the chapter and then reviewing for the test. At the end of the course, there will be a comprehensive final exam. The class work, tests, and homework (what appears in Canvas) will all count towards 6/7 your overall grade while the final exam is worth 1/7 of your overall grade.

Points, lines, planes, angle pairs, distances, measures, algebraic reasoning, proving angles congruent, proofs with lines and angles.

Proving triangles to be congruent, relationships within triangles, polygons, and quadrilaterals.

Vodcasts will be assigned as daily homework in addition to some practice problems on corresponding worksheets. About 1 - 1.5 hours of homework each evening. Comprehensive weekly assessments on 2-3 units, laboratory activities, and a final exam will all contribute to the overall grade in the course.

“Explore Learning” simulations and related worksheets are assigned for homework each evening, plus related e-reading and a few problems from the book. Prerequisite: None

This course will incorporate fitness trackers, FitBits, Apple Watches, steps apps, pedometers, physical assessments, both indoor and outdoor fitness activities, as well as lectures, labs, quizzes, and project assignments. The students will learn how to use various equipment for strength training. The goal is to produce healthliterate students familiar with the necessary tools and information of fitness and wellness. Grading of weekly participation, quizzes, labs, exams, and assignments will make up 75 percent of the final grade. The other 25 percent will be based on the final work-out plan, completed weekly during the course. The course is pass/fail. One hour per day should be allotted to completing course activities.

CAMP LCDS

These programs are half-day or full-day for students entering first through fourth grade. Each week has a child-centered theme ranging from science to art to sports and water play.

SPECIALTY PROGRAMS

Specialty Programs are designed for a wide range of ages and interests. Students participate in each specialty area for a full week. There are both full- and half-day Specialty Programs offerings. If a student is signed up for two half-day Specialty Programs, a supervised lunchtime from noon-1 p.m. is included. Students must bring their own lunches.

REGISTRATION

Registration will open in January. Please have your child’s health information and insurance card ready before you begin the online registration process. Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email. You will have the option to pay for camp in full or provide a $50 non-refundable deposit per camp. The balance of tuition is due by May 1. Your card on file will be charged automatically unless other payment arrangements have been made.

CANCELLATION

For Specialty Programs and Camp LCDS, if you cancel before May 1, you will lose your non-refundable deposit. After May 1, there are no refunds.

LATE PICK-UP FEE AND POLICY

Parents will be charged a late fee of $10 for every 15 minutes (or portion of 15 minutes) that they are late per child, regardless of the reason for being late. Payment is due at the time of pick-up, and the camper may not return to camp until the charge is paid. A late fee form must be completed, and a copy given to the parent as his/her receipt for payment.

Who can attend the Lancaster Country Day School Summer Programs?

All students are welcome, regardless of the school you attend. However, be sure to check the age requirements for each program. Preschool and Junior Kindergarten students must be potty-trained prior to the start of summer programs.

What is the difference between the Camp LCDS and Specialty Programs?

The Camp LCDS Program is geared toward students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade interested in a weekly theme-based camp experience. The Specialty Program is geared towards students in a variety of grade levels and offers a more in-depth experience in a specialized class or topic area.

What are the hours of LCDS Summer Programs?

The day starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Half-day camps run from 9 a.m.-noon and/or 1-4 p.m.

PPAS camps start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.

What should each student bring to the Camp LCDS Program each day?

Each student should bring a water bottle, snack, and hat. Please be sure to send your student to camp with sunscreen already applied. We are happy to help reapply during the day with your written permission. Full-day campers should also bring a packed lunch; lunch is not available for purchase. Full-day campers will also need a bathing suit, towel, and water shoes.

What should each camper bring to the LCDS Specialty Program each day?

Each Specialty Program student should bring a water bottle, snack, and lunch if they are staying for lunch. Teachers will also send out information if anything specific is needed for their program.

What shouldn’t students bring to the LCDS Summer Camps?

We strongly discourage students from bringing electronics such as iPads, cell phones, MP3 players, playing cards or personal games, large amounts of money, and other valuable objects.

My student has food allergies or other special health circumstances, can this be accommodated?

We are happy to work with you and your student to make sure that they are safe. Please be sure to clearly list all allergies and other medical concerns on the online camper registration forms.

How do I register?

What do I do if my child wants to cancel or switch classes/camps?

If cancellation occurs before May 1, you will only lose your nonrefundable deposit. After May 1, there are no refunds. We will accommodate requests to switch camps at the discretion of the director.

How do I guarantee my child is registered with their friends?

The only way to increase the possibility of being in the same program with a friend is for the friend’s parents to try and complete the registration simultaneously, separately. If an account is found to have multiple students from different families registered, their camps will be cancelled.

Behavior Policy & Discipline Procedures

We expect campers to act respectfully at all times. Students are to behave in a mature, responsible way and respect the rights and dignity of others.

If a camper does not follow these guidelines, we may take the following steps as necessary.

EXAMPLES OF UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR:

• Refusing to follow behavior guidelines or camp rules

• Using profanity

• Stealing or damaging property

• Refusal to participate in activities or cooperate with staff

• Disrupting a program

• Leaving a program without permission

1 Staff will redirect the camper to more appropriate behavior.

2 If inappropriate behavior continues, the camper will be reminded of behavior guidelines and the camper will be asked to decide on ageappropriate steps to correct his/her behavior.

3 If the student’s misbehavior continues, he/she will be referred to the Director of Summer Programs and may miss out on an activity or the remainder of the day. Parents will be responsible for early pick-up if necessary.

4 If inappropriate behavior continues, the student may be dismissed from the program.

5 If a student is dismissed from the program, they will not be permitted to participate for the remainder of the summer.

• Endangering the health and safety of children and/or staff

• Use of illicit drugs, alcohol, tobacco or sexual conduct of any kind

• Teasing or bullying of other campers or staff

• Fighting

Program fees are nonrefundable if a student is sent home for disciplinary reasons. Physical violence or bullying will result in immediate dismissal.
