CONTENTS CVS NEWS OTHER SECTOR NEWS FUNDING RESOURCES TRAINING JOBS CVS NEWS [BACK TO TOP] Heysham North Fund Community First: Neighbourhood Matched Fund £5,000 is now available to fund community projects in the Heysham North Ward as part of a new national initiative targeting some of the most deprived areas of the country. People will be encouraged to give time, expertise and resources towards the projects they identify in their areas. The government will match these pound for pound, helping to stimulate local action towards meeting community needs. Heysham North has been included in the Community First programme because there exists within it certain areas of disadvantage in terms of deprivation and increases in benefits claimants. Funding priorities take these factors into account (see below). Lancaster District CVS has registered a community panel to make recommendations to the Community Development Foundation on funding. There is £5,000 available for this financial year and, we hope, further funds for the next three years.
Any group that is a voluntary, community or not for profit organisation and is based within the Lancaster District boundary can apply for a grant of between £250 and £2,500. Please note that the Panel only has £5,000 to allocate this year. It is anticipated that additional funds will be available in the following three years. Funding Priorities for 2011/12: • Provide advice and support for people who are living in temporary or poor accommodation–particularly, but not exclusively, families. • Provide budget counselling, information and advice for individuals experiencing financial difficulties. The application deadline is Friday 22nd June 2012. Recommendations will be made to the Community Development Foundation on 30th June. The application form and guidance notes are available from heyshamnorthfund.posterous.com. If you would like to be involved in a Heysham North reference group to advise on funding priorities and be involved in developing a community plan for the ward for next year, please email the panel via heyshamnorth@lancastercvs.org.uk.
Welfare Reform Bill Becomes Law The controversial Welfare Reform Bill has received Royal Assent and is now an Act of Parliament. The Bill follows the November 2010 White Paper ‘Universal Credit: Welfare that Works’ which set out the Coalition Government's proposals for reforming welfare to improve work incentives, simplifying the benefits system and tackling administrative complexity. Besides introducing Universal Credit, the Bill makes other significant changes to the benefits system. If you would like Lancaster District CVS to organise a briefing for you on key changes and potential implications, please email janeattfield@lancastercvs.org.uk and we will organise this through the Forum. Key areas of reform are as follows: • The Bill introduces Personal Independence Payments to replace the current Disability Living Allowance • It restricts Housing Benefit entitlement for social housing tenants whose accommodation is larger than needed • It will up-rate Local Housing Allowance rates by the Consumer Price Index • It amends the forthcoming statutory child maintenance scheme • Payment of contributory Employment and Support Allowance is limited to a 12-month period • The total amount of benefit that can be claimed will be capped.
Further information is available on the Department for Work and Pensions website.
