The Pub And It's Origins A pub, an abbreviation of 'public house' during the Victorian era, is a drinking establishment licensed to serve alcoholic drinks for consumption on or off the premises in countries and regions of British influence. Although the terms often have different connotations, there is little definitive difference between pubs, bars inns, taverns and lounges where alcohols served commercially. It was with the arrival of the Romans in England and the establishments of the Roman road networks that the first inns called tabernae, in which the traveler may obtain refreshment, began to appear. When the Romans had left, the Anglo-Saxons had formed alehouses that grew out of domestic dwellings. Locals meet, gossip and arrange mutual help within the communities. Here lie the beginnings of the modern pubs. One of the earliest pub was The Red Lion and is said to have originated from the time of James I & VI of Scotland who came to the throne in 1603. James ordered that the heraldic red lion of Scotland be displayed on all buildings of importance - including pubs. The Red Lion became the center of town life, where people could gather, exchange pleasantries, play games, discuss issues and relax at the end of the day.
In The Philippines Started by Brig. Gen. Jose Z. Perlas after his stint at the Philippine Military Academy (Class '44), the first Red Lion opened in 1972 along the busy Pasay Road in Makati. The second pub was at Annapolis St., Greenhills in 1975. Tony, son of Brig. Gen. Perlas, continued the business and opened a Red Lion at the La Mancha in the Magallanes commercial center in 1979 which later expanded to the posh neighborhood of Alabang, at the Casa Susana in Ayala Alabang Town Center in September of 1994. After migrating back to the Philippines from the U.S. in March 2003, the Red Lion Pub & Inn was opened in Baguio City again.
