The Royal Kingdom of Thailand Land of Smiles From The Lonely Planet Thailand Guide

Friendly and fun-‐loving, exo:c and tropical, cultured and historic, Thailand beams with a lustrous hue from its gaudy temples and golden beaches to the ever-‐comfor:ng Thai smile. Sand between your toes Thailand's beaches are mythical: tall palms angle over pearlescent sand, coral gardens flourish in the shallow seas and beach par:es are liberally lubricated with alcohol and fun. With a long coastline (well, actually, two coastlines) and jungle-‐topped islands anchored in azure waters, Thailand is a tropical getaway for the hedonist and the hermit, the prince and the pauper. And in between the kissing cousins of sea and sky are drama:c limestone mountains standing sen:nel. This paradise offers a varied menu of playing in the gentle surf of Bang Saphan Yai, diving with whale sharks in Ko Tao, scaling the sea cliffs of Krabi, learning to kite board in Hua Hin, recupera:ng at a health resort in Koh Samui and feas:ng on the beach wherever sand meets

sea. Sacred Spaces The celes:al world is a close confidant in this Buddhist na:on, where religious devo:on is a colourful and ubiquitous spectacle. Gleaming temples and golden Buddhas frame both the rural and m o d e r n l a n d s c a p e w i t h exuberance. Ancient banyan trees are ceremoniously wrapped in sacred cloth to honour the resident spirits, fortune-‐bringing shrines decorate humble noodle houses as well as monumental malls, while garland-‐festooned dashboards ward off traffic accidents. The Thai's ongoing dialogue with the divine anchors the day-‐to-‐day chaos to a solid base of tranquillity. Visitors can join in on the conversa:on through medita:on retreats in Chiang Mai, noisy religious fes:vals in northeastern Thailand, peaceful underground cave shrines in Kanchanaburi and Phetchaburi or scenic hilltop temples in northern Thailand.

A Boun?ful Table No macer what draws you to the country first, a Thai meal will keep you hooked. Adored around the world, Thai cuisine expresses fundamental aspects of Thai culture: it is generous and warm, outgoing and nuanced, refreshing and relaxed. And it is much more delicious in its na:ve seOng. Each Thai dish relies on fresh and local i n g r e d i e n t s – f r o m p u n g e n t lemongrass and searing chillies to plump seafood and crispy fried chicken. With a tropical abundance, a varied na:onal menu is built around the four fundamental flavours: spicy, sweet, salty and sour. And then there are the regional differences, which propel travellers on an ea:ng tour of Bangkok noodle shacks, seafood pavilions in Phuket, Burmese market stalls in Mae Hong Son, and luscious tropical fruit everywhere. Cooking classes reveal the simplicity behind the seemingly complicated dishes and mastering the markets becomes an important skill.

Bangkok

Bangkok - The city of Angels As the poli+cal, economic, cultural, culinary, and spiritual capital of Thailand, Bangkok features both old-‐world charm and modern convenience, at +mes served up in an apparently chao+c manner, but always with a gracious smile. Invariably, every Thailand holiday includes a visit to the kingdom’s capital city, Bangkok, or Krung Thep, “the city of angels” as it is known to its inhabitants. Many tourists who travel to Bangkok are immediately overwhelmed by the sheer size of the city and the vast number of acrac:ons Bangkok has to offer. Indeed there is a wide variety of Bangkok sightseeing opportuni:es spanning more than two centuries of rapid development following the city’s founding in 1782 by King Rama I, the first king of the present Chakri dynasty. Since that auspicious date, Bangkok has swelled to a cosmopolitan, 21st century city of more than ten million inhabitants. While the immensity of the city and its bustling streets can be in:mida:ng at first, those who spend some :me in Bangkok are quickly enamoured by the myriad of acrac:ons Bangkok contains, from exo:c temples, which underscore Thailand’s strong Buddhist history, to modern shopping malls, which make shopping an integral part of any Bangkok holiday. Bangkok features acrac:ons guaranteed to please visitors either simply passing through the city or spending their en:re Thailand holiday in Bangkok. Nearly every Bangkok holiday includes a visit to Thailand’s Grand Palace, arguably the premier Bangkok sightseeing acrac:on. Situated in the heart of Bangkok’s Racanakosin Island, the gleaming spires of the Grand Palace are conveniently located nearby Bangkok’s most spectacular temples, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo), the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), and Wat Pho, which features an enormous reclining Buddha and was home of the first Thai massage school in the kingdom. These iconic des:na:ons are top

acrac:ons to all visitors who travel to Bangkok looking to appreciate Thailand’s unique cultural tradi:ons. In fact, there are more than 400 func:oning Buddhist temples throughout the city and it’s not uncommon when you travel in Bangkok to spot saffron robed monks collec:ng morning alms or traveling throughout out the city, including along the Chao Phraya, the “River of Kings”, which passes alongside the Temple of the Dawn. The winding Chao Phraya is connected by numerous canals from which Bangkok has earned its nickname the “Venice of the East”; when you travel around Bangkok, a cruise on the Chao Phraya, a visit to a floa:ng market, or an explora:on of the ci:es “back alley” canals (khlongs) are themselves unique Bangkok acrac:ons. Other historical and cultural Bangkok sightseeing ‘must sees’ include the Na:onal Museum, Vimanmek Mansion, and Suan Pakkad Palace, all of which either house fine art or are na:onal treasures in their own right. Beyond Bangkok’s historical district, there are plenty of other acrac:ons that make a Bangkok holiday both enjoyable and memorable. The downtown districts along Silom and Sukhumvit Roads have a convenient electric rail system, including an elevated sky-‐train and underground subway, that have made travel in Bangkok both easy and enjoyable. Connec:ng hotels directly to shopping malls and tradi:onal markets, such as Mah Boon Krong Centre and Chatuchak (JJ) weekend market, the MRT and BTS systems have literally elevated Bangkok shopping to world-‐class status. Of course, no Thailand holiday is complete without experiencing Thailand’s vibrant nightlife. Whether, the purpose of your Thailand holiday is to immerse yourself in Thailand’s unique culture or simply to splurge in Bangkok shopping malls, when you travel to Bangkok you are guaranteed a fascina:ng experience of both old-‐world charm and modern convenience and luxury.

Dining in Bangkok

Bangkok’s flavour explosion five top new eateries By Mrigaa Sethi, for CNN

Bangkok’s dining scene has had an especially busy year and a half, with new trends and new restaurants popping up across the city. From five-‐star French chefs going bistro to Thai entrepreneurs presen:ng lesser-‐ known recipes straight out of the history books, here are five top Bangkok restaurants that are adding even more spice to the Thai capital. Le Beaulieu: One of Bangkok’s best new restaurants is also one of its best old restaurants. Napoleonic and fiercely talented chef Herve Frerard has been feeding Bangkok’s high society and poli:cal bigwigs for years out of his bright and airy space on Sukhumvit Soi 19. AJer a long, agonizing break, however, he's reopened at the Athenee Office Tower on Wireless Road, where he hopes to acract local clientele with slightly more rus:c fare and a casual outdoor wine terrace that serves cold cuts and cheeses. Inside, however, is where the magic happens. Meals range from a placer of burrata cheese with heirloom tomatoes (elevated with lemon confit) to sous-‐vide Wagyu beef cheek in a red wine sauce and a pot au feu with morteau sausage, pork belly and veal tongue. Athenee Office Tower, 63 Wireless Road; +66 (0)2 168 8220; expensive; www.le-‐beaulieu.com Gossip: One of the newest openings on this list, the kitchen at Gossip is led by Julien Lavigne, who sharpened his Bangkok knives at the posh jewel in the Dusit Thani crown, D’Sens, the Thai outpost of the Michelin-‐starred Pourcel Brothers. From there he

Here you’ll find a mix of French and Italian dishes, with a smacering of op:ons that reflect Lavigne’s :me in Asia. These include arancini with toma:llo salsa, seared red tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes and a refreshing ceviche made with hamachi fish, corn and Thai herbs. The cocktails are done by Karl Ansaldi of Zuma fame, and there’s a very affordable list of organic wines. Décor is equally cosmopolitan, with a nod to the aesthe:c of "Life" magazine circa 1960 -‐-‐ a loungey outdoor space flanked by a graffi:-‐ embellished wall. There’s even a chef’s garden in the back where KiOchai grows herbs and greens. The food is mostly classic Thai, but the execu:on is novel enough for repeat Bangkok visitors to be delighted. We recommend the moo manao (thinly sliced pork topped with lime and edible flowers), glazed pork ribs and pla ob prik (baked fish with a chili glaze). If you're grappling with a dessert decision, the chef’s signature jasmine flower flan is fantas:c. 4 Soi Sri Aksorn, Chuaphloeng Road; +66 (0)2 672 9040; moderate to expensive; www.issaya.com The Local: The southern Thailand decor in The Local's main dining room features Thai shadow play. Phuket

Phuket What comes into the mind of travellers when we talk about sea, sun and sand? Phuket must definitely be one of the answers. A number of exci:ng ac:vi:es can be found on this island. In the early days of regional mari:me trade, the cape of Phuket was locally referred to as Jung Ceylon, while locals called it Thalang, which evolved to be the name of the main town to the north of the island. As the perfect stopover sheltering traders from monsoons, Jung Ceylon welcomed merchants from India, Persia, Arabia, Burma, China, and also Siam. During the 16th century, the island was a popular trading port for :n. In 1785, Thalang town was surrounded by Burmese troops who invaded the coastal area. It was under the leadership of Chan, the widow of the governor, and her sister, Muk, who united the local residents and successfully fought and drove the invaders out of Phuket. It took over 30 days for the defending troops of Phuket, under the command of Chan and Muk, to claim their victory. As a result of such heroic deeds, noble :tles were granted to Chan and Muk as Thao Thep Kasacri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, respec:vely. They are s:ll highly respected by Phuket residents even today. When the city was in a peaceful state, the development of mining was so unprecedented. Chinese businessmen and miners later migrated to Phuket and soon enjoyed thriving wealth. The island's long history has shaped the Phuket of the present with its diverse ethnic groups, culture, architectural influence, and fine cuisine. These acributes have made Phuket a complete tourist des:na:on that offers a lot more beyond its natural heritage of sea, sand, forest, and world-‐ renowned diving sites. Sino-‐Portuguese architecture casts its spell deligh:ng travellers to the city, while Phuket style of hospitality has never failed to impress visitors from all walks of life.

Phuket Beach Club: Catch

Catch Beach Club Surin Beach Beach clubs are popular all over the world from Barcelona to Bombay but it's the Spanish who seem to have gocen beach dining down to a fine art. There's even a Thai 'chiringuito', or beach club, in Marbella, believe it or not. The Spanish tradi:onally wait un:l the weather warms up in May before frequen:ng their chiringuitos but here in Phuket you can catch a beach club all year round. But there's none more chic and trend seOng than Catch Beach Club on Surin Beach. Catch club is one of the most innova:ve restaurants on the island when it comes to décor. The club has several sec:ons: the beachside al fresco part features boardwalk wooden floors, comfortable sofas and cushions, large parasols and vases, lots of canvas to keep off the sun and rows of recently planted palms. To the side, next to a blue under-‐lit bar is a gas flame gushing out of a purpose-‐built hole in the floor. Groovy? You bet. There are two covered dining spaces, one of which houses the stage where guest acts liven up the nights – the most recent party here had 700 people dancing the night away. The other is a café-‐cum pizza/ pasta place that also doubles as the restaurant's 'recep:on'. The cool layout and snazzy background music does a lot to help things along here but really, Catch

Club is already in a fantas:c loca:on, nestled into sand dunes and directly facing the sea so as ligh:ng goes, a flame-‐red sun dropping into the mocled Andaman Sea isn't too bad a start and the twinkling stars up above equally impressive, as are the spotlights in the palms. When Catch Club rocks it rocks hard but at other :mes it's a prime place for hip boys and girls to chill out at and appreciate the fine wines and food available. In theory Catch Club has separate lunch and dinner menus but this is Thailand and Catch Club is more than willing to sa:sfy its clientele so evening diners are also able to order lighter lunch fare. As would be imagined, many of the dishes feature seafood but there's also a range of pastas, pizzas and penne’s served from the Catch Café as well as lamb and steaks and even Mexican. Grilled white snapper in banana leaves with garlic, herbs and lemon chunks is heaven while the grain-‐fed sirloin with peppercorn sauce and ro: potatoes is also a winner but the star of the evening is most certainly one of the most popular dishes in Thailand – a som tam papaya salad, burs:ng with goodness, flavours and character. Most definitely the place to take your :me over dinner, the Catch Club covers culinary bases with ease.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui Koh Samui is the premier island des:na:on in the Gulf of Thailand. Samui is easily accessible, features beau:ful beaches and a variety of ac:vi:es, and caters to visitors on any budget. Koh Samui, Thailand’s second most popular island des:na:on, is located in the Gulf of Thailand roughly 700 km south of Bangkok and 80 km from Thailand’s southern coast. Samui is the third largest island in Thailand and the largest in an archipelago of more than 80 islands that includes the Ang Thong Na:onal Marine Park, a kayaking paradise and day trip from Ko Samui. While Samui is small enough to be circumnavigated in just a couple of hours by motorbike or car, the island features such a variety of beaches and ac:vi:es that it would be impossible to experience everything in a single visit. However, this was not always the case. Un:l the late 20th century, Samui was home to a small community engaged primarily in fishing and harves:ng coconuts. There were not even any roads on the island un:l the early 1970’s. However, once foreign visitors discovered this island gem, lush with tropical forest, fringed with palm tree lined stretches of golden sand, and surrounded by pellucid, aquamarine water, development quickly followed. Today the beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are bustling beach towns with fabulous beach resorts, interna:onally acclaimed restaurants, and world-‐class nightclubs. Ac:vi:es around Ko Samui include cooking courses, yoga instruc:on, scuba diving, and even golf. While there are a few quieter beaches that are ideal for relaxa:on, par:cularly those that feature some of the finest 5-‐star resorts in the world, and some that exude old world charm, such as Bo Phut, which features converted, old Chinese shop houses, Samui is a lively, exci:ng place than it was a few decades ago. Koh Samui has developed into its own style of island paradise, retaining much of its natural beauty while offering nearly everything imaginable the ul:mate beach holiday.

The Library If you can finish one book while staying with them, then they believe that this is more than an accomplishment of their team. The Library aims to share happiness with another point of view on how to spend valuable :me when you vaca:on. Krabi

Krabi Krabi, a province on southern Thailand’s Andaman coast, is an almost otherworldly region of labyrinthine archipelagos, where islands seem to erupt ver:cally out of the sea and secluded beaches are only accessible by colourfully adorned long tail boats. Krabi’s myriad of bays and coves have sheltered pirates, merchants, and sea gypsies for thousands of years and archaeological evidence indicates that Krabi was originally inhabited as early as 25,000 -‐ 35,000 years ago! With acrac:ons including hot springs, a wildlife sanctuary, sea caves, flourishing coral reefs and exo:c marine life, limestone cliffs that draw rock climbing enthusiasts from around the world, and na:onal parks that include the island paradises of Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta, one could easily spend weeks in Krabi and leave yearning for more. If that wasn’t enough, Krabi features some of the most photogenic sunsets in Thailand, oJen accompanied by spectacular displays of cloud to cloud lightning, that are best enjoyed from a beachside bar or restaurant. Meanwhile, with all the tourists spread out among various beaches and islands, life goes on in Krabi Town, the somewhat sleepy provincial capital. Surprisingly few tourists spend :me in the charming riverside town, whose hilly streets feature a number of cozy cafes and inexpensive and authen:c Thai cuisine is served at an outdoor, riverside evening market. “Town” to most visitors is Ao Nang, a seaside strip of guesthouses, hotels, bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops that con:nues to grow as tourist arrivals increase, now spreading north

into Noppharat Thara, whose quiet, shady beach is part of the na:onal park that includes the Phi Phi Islands. Ao Nang is the major launching point for boat trips to nearby islands and the isolated beaches of Phra Nang Cape, where the famous former hippie enclave of Railey Beach is located. Krabi Province, which lies along the coast of the Andaman sea in Southern Thailand, is a top tourist des:na:on as a result of its plen:ful natural acrac:ons including, white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, extensive coral reefs, numerous caves and waterfalls, and over 130 islands, including Koh Lanta and the jewels of the Andaman coast, the six islands of Mu Koh Phi Phi Na:onal Park. While not the top des:na:on in and of itself, Krabi Town is a charming provincial capital located along the banks of a river that leads to the nearby Andaman Sea. Consequently, Krabi is an important port city for both local fisherman as well as boats ferrying visitors to the nearby acrac:ons, including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Railey Beach, one of the premier rock climbing des:na:ons in the world.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai Thailand’s “Rose of the North” is a cultural and natural wonderland with ethnic diversity, a mul:tude of acrac:ons and welcoming hospitality. Chiang Mai literally means “new city” and has retained the name despite celebra:ng its 700th anniversary in 1996. King Meng Rai the Great founded the city as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom on Thursday, April 12 1296 around the same :me as the establishment of the Sukhothai Kingdom. King Meng Rai even conferred with his friends, King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao before choosing the site where the capital of the Lanna Kingdom was to be founded. Henceforth, Chiang Mai not only became the capital and cultural core of the Lanna Kingdom, it was also to be the centre of Buddhism in northern Thailand. King Meng Rai himself was a very religious leader who even founded many of the city’s temples that remain important to this day. Chiang Mai is one of the few places in Thailand where it is possible to experience both historical and modern Thai culture coexis:ng side by side: the city features centuries-‐old pagodas and temples next to modern convenience stores and bou:que hotels. This dichotomy is best appreciated within the moat-‐encircled old city, which retains much of the for:fied wall that once protected the city center as well as the four main gates that provided access to the former Lanna capital city. Strangely, for many years tourists had mistaken Chiang Mai simply as the base from which they could plan trekking and raJing trips to hill tribe villages and explore other provinces. Once in Chiang Mai, however, tourists are surprised by the fact that there are so many things to discover other than its beau:ful and historic temples.

Intriguing diversity among ethnic tribes, a number of elephant camps, many cooking and massage schools, numerous outdoor ac:vi:es, a variety of handicraJs workshops, various cultural performances, and breathtaking scenery make Chiang Mai one of Asia’s most acrac:ve tourist des:na:ons. The phrase "a day in Chiang Mai is enough to see things around town" was once a common expression. Today, two weeks in Chiang Mai may not be long enough for travelers to experience all that Chiang Mai has to offer. The old city of Chiang Mai is a showcase of the north’s fascina:ng indigenous cultural iden:ty that includes diverse dialects, a delectable cuisine, dis:nc:ve architecture, tradi:onal values, lively fes:vals, numerous handicraJs workshops, northern style massage, and classical dances. Chiang Mai is also blessed with pris:ne natural resources including mountains, waterfalls, and rivers. The presence of numerous hill tribes that feature a wealth of unique cultures enhances Chiang Mai’s dis:nc:ve diversity. Hill tribe trekking, oJen combined with river raJing and elephant riding has always been one of Chiang Mai’s greatest tourist acrac:ons. Nowadays there are innumerable ac:vi:es and acrac:ons both in the city and the surrounding province, including massage instruc:on and golf. Moreover, visitors can visit workshops where they can learn about the produc:on of silk or silver, and purchase memorable, hand-‐craJed souvenirs. With such a diverse range of acrac:ons and an equally grand selec:on of dining and accommoda:on op:ons, Chiang Mai is a place where both backpackers and luxury tourists can enjoy the ul:mate Thailand holiday.

Chiang Mai: The Chedi

The Chedi Behind renowned architect Kerry Hill’s four-‐story bamboo-‐ clad wall stands one of Thailand’s most striking modern compounds, ‘Japanese ryokan meets Louis Kahn.’ At Chiang Mai’s only five-‐star hotel along the scenic Mae Ping, tradi:onal fishing boats float past the floor-‐to-‐ceiling sliding glass doors of all eighty-‐ four sleek guest rooms. Pan seared foie gras, som tum and jingha masala. Dining is a global affair with Western, Thai, Korean and Indian dishes served inside our 90-‐year old Bri:sh consulate building and outside on the teak, tree-‐shaded deck. Chiang Mai: The Rachamankha

The Rachamankha Situated in the heart of historic Chiang Mai old city founded in 1296, the 25 room Rachamankha is next to Wat Phra Singh, jus:fiably the city’s most famous temple (circa 1345). Four temples of notable interest are within easy walking distance from the hotel, out of thirty-‐three func:oning wats or temples in the walled city of old Chiang Mai. Architect Ong-‐ard Satrabhandhu chose the unassuming architecture of the centuries-‐old vernacular Chinese dwellings, a carefully orchestrated sequence of courtyards as a source of inspira:on. The architecture and landscape design of Rachamankha celebrates local Lanna historical heritage, climate and tradi:onal building prac:ces of the Northern Thai region. Southeast Asian architecture defines the character of the hotel, which is full of delighqul surprises, a studied composi:on of light and dark, open and closed outdoor spaces to achieve a true sense of place that expresses serenity and mystery. Rachamankha does not reveal itself to the passerby, but excites curiosity and creates a recep:ve mood. Only aJer passing through the hotel forecourt, the Zen-‐like simplicity and sophis:ca:on of the colonnaded courtyards welcome guests to the world of serenity and contentment. The hotel dis:nc:ve architecture aesthe:c is inspired by the eleventh centuries B.C. vernacular Chinese dwellings, from which Northern Thai

architecture has its roots. The Library at Rachamankha exudes old world charm and character; it houses over 2,000 books ranging from novels to work on Thai history of art and architecture, design and culture. The library lounge is a relaxing place for conversa:on and refreshments. The enchan:ng open-‐air massage pavilion overlooks a tranquil 20-‐meter pool where drinks and light snacks are served pool-‐side throughout the day. The Suites (105 m2) Comprised of two double en-‐suite bedrooms, a large lounge and kitchenece, Suite 26 is situated above the library and has a large private balcony overlooking the library lawn. Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai The quieter neighbor of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai is a land of outstanding natural beauty, where visitors looking to avoid the hordes can visit remote hill tribes, spot exo:c wildlife, and check out the golden triangle, the former center of the world’s opium trade. Chiang Rai has been inhabited since the 7th century, but it was not un:l 1262 that King Meng Rai established it as the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The capital was later relocated to Chiang Mai and since that :me Chiang Rai has lived in the shadow of its neighboring province, though for tourists this is a good thing.Today, Chiang Rai is a traveler’s paradise, endowed with abundant natural acrac:ons and an:qui:es. Acrac:ons range from ruins of ancient seclements and Buddhist shrines to magnificent mountain scenery and hill tribe villages. For those interested in the natural side of Chiang Rai, jungle trekking is a magical experience; explore the mountains of the north along various hiking trails, many of which access the villages of diverse hill tribes groups, many of whom maintain their tradi:onal lifestyles. Chiang Rai town, which tends to be a licle more ‘laid back’ than its more popular neighbor, now competes with Chiang Mai as a tourist acrac:on and is fast becoming a popular escape for tourists wan:ng to leave their troubles behind. Chiang Rai had stayed off the tourist radar for many years, its people enjoying very leisurely development and mostly tradi:onal,

rural lifestyles. Un:l this day, en:re clans live together in bamboo houses and each village has its own individual character.
