Mauralia

- The ‘modern’ metropolis;

“the idea of the postcards depicting the previous face of the city was the most prominent image in my mind for Mauralia. In this sketch the postcard shows the elegant Victorian woman while in the background the munitions factory fills the skyline.”

The traveller arrives at the city...

Look a little closer...

Fedora

- The city of cities;

“For fedora I envisaged a limitless hall of repetitive transparent spaces, allowing the visitor to see all of Fedoras ever expanding possibilities of existence.”

The unlimited hall of infinite Fedoras’...

Look at the possibilities...

Zoe

- The unrecognisable city;

“For me, Zoe reminded me most of Venice. Having been there myself I completely understood this description and how nothing was distinguishable. No two facades were identical, but the services hidden inside could not be recognized without investigation. Calvino recognises this by asking ‘What line seperates the inside from outside?’.”

The traveller is unable to distinguish the features of the city...

Look inside...

Zenobia

- The elevated(?) city;

“Zenobia is envisaged as a raised city, the sketch below shows how the prominent image in my mind was

depicted as a shanty-town-esque village. The most intriguing aspect of the city is Calvino’s query about why the city should look like this? Did it always look like this or was it designed for a reason that is no longer required (water)?...”

Designed for a purpose, or designed by nature...

Look at the options...

Euphemia - The city of stories; “Euphemia is a beautiful description, one which I wish I could experience in person. Merchant traders gathering round a fire to share travel stories, I had sketched this image long before pencil touched paper

Exchange goods, trade stories...

Listen for a while...

Mauralia

- Sketch 1; The visitor arrives at the city...

“The visitor to Mauralia is greeted with open arms and invited to look around the city, but only in comparison to how it used to appear, via postcard depiction.

The traveller arrives at the city...

Mauralia

- Sketch 2; The visitor looks through the postcards as he walks around the city...

“In this sketch the postcard shows the elegant Victorian woman while in the background the munitions factory fills the skyline.

Look a little closer...

Mauralia

- Sketch 3; The visitor looks through the postcards as he walks around the city...

“In this sketch the postcard shows the bandstand that stood before the overpass was created.

Look a little closer...

Mauralia

- Sketch 4; The visitor looks through the postcards as he walks around the city...

“In this sketch the postcard shows the old town square that used to stand before the bus station was constructed.

Look a little closer...

Mauralia

- Sketch 5; The visitor reflects on what he has seen...

“Has the original Mauralia become so unrecognisable? Or did the Mauralia depicted in the postcards ever exist, or does it still exist somewhere else. This sketch picks up on Calvino’s final quotes by insinuating that two Mauralias exist, which one do you want to see?”
