Africa’s low cost airline

Welcome to the latest issue of 540 magazine Our cover story this issue is a celebration of Nairobi’s blossoming food scene, namely our top five picks for a spot of brunch in the city – from budget-friendly to super pricey. Elsewhere in the magazine and down at the coast, there is a design company that’s catching the eye. We catch up with Pulsaris in Mombasa and speak to the company’s ground-breaking co-founders about recent projects and their unique business philosophy.

On the rise Handball may not quite match football in terms of popularity. Nevertheless, the sport has a devoted following across East Africa and interest is on the rise. So it was about time 540 had a look. It will come as no surprise to anyone living in East Africa, but Uganda has been named by Rough Guides as one of the world’s top 10 countries to visit in 2017. This follows similar recent

accolades and encouragement to visit from other such travel publications. Twende Uganda. We pay a long-overdue visit to Nairobi’s very own and threatenedaround-the-edges game park; attend the Zanzibar International Film Festival; review the latest in virtual reality technology; highlight Kenya’s success in the MICE tourism sector; and go all romantic for Valentine’s Day. We spice it up by eating out at Curry in Hurry in Westlands, spend the night in the Aberdares at the Giraffe Ark Game Lodge and test drive Kenya’s very own, Thika-assembled and new-to-market VW Polo Vivo. We hope you enjoy your flight with Fly540 and please feel free to contact me should you have any comments about this magazine. Gary Gimson Publisher publishing@landmarine.com

A new era for East Africa’s biggest festival Fabrizio Colombo takes over as ZIFF turns 20

Africa,” recalls Mr Colombo. Having experienced the arts scene of West Africa, notably the FESPACO (the Pan-African Film Festival of Ouagadougou held in Burkina Faso), Mr Colombo noticed the differences between East and West African cinema and realised that the former had huge potential for international recognition. “Back in Italy [Mr Colombo’s home nation], I became director at the African Film Festival of Verona and started to bring East African cinema into the festival.”

International Aside from working for ZIFF and the African Film Festival of Verona, Mr Colombo has a wealth of experience in the international film industry, with African cinema at the core of all of his activities. “I do film selection and artistic direction at Kibaka Film Festival in Florence, and I collaborate with other African film

rguably the biggest and most important arts festival in East Africa, Zanzibar International Film Festival turns 20 this year and is being taken in a new direction by Fabrizio Colombo, recently appointed as ZIFF’s new festival director. 540’s Kirsten Alexander spoke to Mr Colombo about his new role at ZIFF, his plans for the festival’s future and why he thinks African cinema is among the best in the world. Having worked for ZIFF for the past several years, Fabrizio Colombo is no stranger to the East African arts scene and has become an advocate for celebrating this diverse yet underrated industry. “I came to ZIFF as a jury member nearly nine years ago and I realised the power of this festival in being one of the biggest platforms for African cinema, especially in East

festivals in Italy as well as acting as a jury member at the Afrika Festival in Belgium.” After working for ZIFF in various roles including assistant festival director, how was the transition into Festival Director for Mr Colombo? “ZIFF is always a challenge, firstly because we need to establish a sustainable festival in order to continue with financial stability. Because the culture of cinema in Africa is changing, it can also be challenging, especially as

ZIFF

it’s so different in many areas of this wonderful continent.” One of Mr Colombo’s first roles in his new position is to coordinate the 2017 festival, which is also the festival’s 20th edition, making it an extra special challenge. “The theme for this year’s ZIFF is ‘Finding Joy’, a theme conceived by my mentor Prof. Martin Mhando [Mr Colombo’s predecessor]. We really thought that in this time of fear and terror, and where people feel discouraged and hopeless facing the future, we want to send a message of hope and joy,” says Mr Colombo.

Anniversary The programme for this year’s festival is jam-packed, with the usual art and photography exhibitions, music, dance and cultural

events in addition to some new aspects introduced especially for the 20th anniversary. “A new thing for ZIFF20 will be the introduction of a competition and project – the inclusion of African film schools. These schools are where new African cinema is growing and needs to be shared in a festival like ZIFF.” In addition, there is another big project that Mr Colombo is hoping to introduce for ZIFF20. “I realised the need for filmmakers to sell their product, meet producers and get funding opportunities, so we are working on the launch of the first Film and TV Market,” says Mr Colombo. “We want ZIFF to become a reference market, especially for East African cinema and TV production. This is just one of the new ideas that’s in the pot of ideas right now.”

Crowds en route to the dhow race

As an advocate for East African cinema, as well as being a keen consumer of the same, Mr Colombo is excited about the future of East African film. “The new generation of filmmakers (many come from African film schools) are so courageous and creative in the way they film and edit their movies. I admire those filmmakers who are capable of creating new styles of African cinema, while at the same time, mastering world styles and genres without losing the African touch.” The potential for further growth and a new generation of African cinema is possible, but only with outside help, Mr Colombo believes: “Distribution is key to improving the African film industry. We need leaders from African nations to recognise and support the cinema industry, knowing that, like music, it is a way to promote their country to the rest of the world.”

The 20th edition of the Zanzibar International Film Festival takes place from 8-16 July 2017 in Stone Town, Zanzibar. For more information, visit: www.ziff.or.tz

Pulsaris Design

A BRIGHT STAR

PULSARIS  Changing the face of design in Mombasa

IN INTERIOR DESIGN 540 magazine chats to Pulsaris Design

I

f you haven’t heard of Pulsaris Design, then I’m sure you are not alone. Yet, this is a company that is breaking new ground in Kenya, so 540 magazine thought Pulsaris Design should be brought before a wider audience. We set about interviewing the company’s founding partners, Helvi Rissanen and Khairdin M. Akbar, and here’s what they had to say:

Q: When was Pulsaris Design set up and why? A: Pulsaris Design Ltd was set up in 2015 to provide interior design services for commercial and residential spaces (homes, offices, restaurants, shops etc) to residents in Mombasa who were having to bring in designers from Nairobi and overseas, or design themselves and have local fundis fabricate

for them. This often ended with unsatisfactory and stressful results. We felt that it was time to bring a comprehensive solution provider into the market. Since our inception, our work has now expanded into other regions and countries.

Q: Does Pulsaris just design or do you also undertake the actual shop-fitting and the branding? A: We design and/or fit out spaces as our clients require. Some people approach us for design only, where they need guidance in formalising

their concept into a format that is easily translatable to manufacturers. Others, however, prefer a turnkey solution. They want to be able to walk into their space and begin using it immediately with only a suitcase, briefcase or food crate in hand.

Q: Can you give us some examples of recently completed projects and what was involved? A: Our newest hospitality offering is a 65-seater restaurant in Ratna Square, Nyali, called ‘Grill House’, which is located at the site of an older establishment. We were tasked with assisting the contractor to bring to fruition our design concept. We selected hard finishes and colour schemes as well as fabricating the loose furniture and decor items. Another project was www.fly540.com

ABOUT PULSARIS DESIGN  Helvi Rissanen started the company in 2013 and now partner, Khairdin M. Akbar, would collaborate with her on various projects. In 2015, the two formalised their working relationship into Pulsaris Design Ltd. Their shared passion for changing the world around them and enhancing experiences through transforming environments brought the pair together. Until Helvi and Khairdin came along it seemed that most solution providers were simply just copying ideas directly from the internet, trying to imitate the next best space or simply sticking to safe, dry and colourless solutions.

a company residence at Mumias Sugar where we designed floor plans and shopped for furniture, linen, electronic appliances and tableware items. We also designed and fitted out a computer and mobility outlet in Mombasa called Bestbuys Technologies, where we had to completely renovate an older retail location, then add a mezzanine floor, hard finishes and eventually loose furniture and branding.

Q: Where do you source the basic material for shopfitting – in Kenya or from overseas? A: Most of our materials are sourced locally; however, depending on the budget, we can source from overseas. One such instance was our work at the Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort in Kilifi 18

Africa’s low cost airline

where we sourced loose furniture and soft furnishings from abroad. It all depends on the budget and preferences of our clients.

Q: Do you provide clients with a 3D design concept before starting a project? A: Yes, we start with a layout or space plan to show what goes where. Then, if this is approved, we create a photorealistic 3D render of the space. We can also create digital walk-through videos if required.

Q: Do you have to first pitch a design idea to clients or do they just choose Pulsaris and expect you to come up with the concept? A: This depends on the situation. We sometimes approach

EYE-CATCHING  One of Pulsaris’s recent shop designs

clients with a specific project in mind and pitch to them what we feel will work and other times clients approach us and ask us to give them options. We usually prepare a presentation for each space where we outline various concepts and design styles and our clients choose from one of these. We have had wonderful experiences where clients ask us to quote a small renovation then, after seeing our work, become so inspired they decide they want a brand-new concept. Most of the time, people feel limited and

VIEWS

are not aware of all the creative possibilities that exist for them. It is our pleasure to explore these ideas with them.

Q: Most of your projects seem to involve the dramatic transformation of existing sites rather than, for example, designing for retail space in a new mall. Is there a reason for this? A: Actually, we have designed for new spaces before. We created a design for a jewellery shop named Taj Gems at the Two Rivers Mall and the Vipingo Ridge villas were newly built when we furnished them. However, most of our recent projects have involved extensive renovations of existing spaces. I think the latter are the most exciting and dramatic, as you said. You really get a clear sense of

before and after. Sometimes even we can barely recognise the old space from site photos.

Q: Do clients normally provide you with a budget or does Pulsaris first come up with a price based on its concept? A: Some clients have a predetermined budget that we work with and others are not sure and want to see the options open to them. We design with the very best in mind. We like to show our clients the optimum design for their space with the highest quality materials. After looking over our initial Bill of Quantities, and if a client feels that the BQ does not match their budget, we sit down with our clients and value engineer the BQ until we have an agreeable figure.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?  The name Pulsaris comes from ‘pulsar’, which is the name of a type of star. Pulsars rapidly rotate and emit regular bursts of extremely bright light. Pulsaris’s video entitled ‘Best Interior Design Retail Kenya – By Pulsaris Design’ is currently the number one search result for ‘interior design retail’ on YouTube and continues to grow.

Handball Kenya

You’ve got to hand it to them… By Kirsten Alexander

Local teams raising the profile of handball

O POPULAR 

Dziurek / Shutterstock, Inc.

The 2016 European Men’s Handball Championship

riginating in Germany and Scandinavia, handball is hugely popular across Europe and has been a staple feature of the Summer Olympics since 1972. While Kenya is still playing catch-up with other countries to be a handball front runner, the sport is growing in popularity, with local teams competing regularly – and winning. Not to be confused with the often controversial football offence, handball is a popular sport in its own right which shares some similarities with football, basketball and netball. Unless you are a fan or player of handball, however, chances are you may not be familiar with the sport, as it is still in its fledgling stage here in Kenya. It is, however, one of the most popular sports in Europe. In last year’s Olympics, for example, 20 countries took part in the handball tournament, with just three African countries – Angola, Tunisia and Egypt – representing the continent. While the European teams took all of the medals in both the women’s and men’s tournaments, this doesn’t seem to be dampening the spirit of up-and-coming teams and tournaments across Kenya and East Africa.

Growing A quick internet search of handball in Kenya brings up a number of small teams from Nairobi to Mombasa, Bungoma to Nyeri, proving the sport is gradually growing across the country. The teams are often made up of players from the same university or business, such as Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri and Nairobi’s Kenya Defence Forces.

Nairobi Water has been great news for Kenyan handball, highlighting the talent that our teams possess and showing that they are worthy competitors on an international level. In addition to winning the East and Central Africa Club Handball Championship, both teams are also national champions, proving they are the best handball talent in Kenya, but hopefully also inspiring others to take up the sport or encouraging those already playing to aim high.

Popularity While football will always be king in the sporting world, handball has seen an increase in popularity in the last few years thanks to local teams taking part in a variety of events and contests both locally

Dziurek / Shutterstock, Inc.

While many of the smaller teams tend to play informally or in lower-level leagues, Kenya’s handball front runners are taking the sport to the next level. Towards the end of 2016 the East and Central African Handball Club Championship took place with teams from Rwanda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda travelling to Nairobi to battle for the top spot. The 28th edition of the championship showed a marked improvement on the 2015 contest, with 13 teams taking part, more than double the turnout for the previous year. Two home teams – Kenya Defence Force (KDF) and Nairobi Water – took the men’s and women’s titles in last year’s tournament. The success of both KDF and

and internationally. The recent victories for KDF and Nairobi Water will surely encourage more people to take an interest in the fledgling handball movement that is gaining momentum across the city and beyond.

erved by sister airline Fly-SAX, Uganda is known as the Pearl of Africa and has a reputation for fabulous wildlife and national parks, although the tourism industry is still somewhat underdeveloped compared with Kenya and Tanzania. However, Uganda was recently named as one of the top 10 countries to visit in 2017 by travel publisher Rough Guides, an achievement that will no doubt have positive repercussions on the country’s travel and tourism industry. UK-based Rough Guides is renowned for its expansive collection of travel books and its informative website, covering almost every country on the planet, including what to see and where to stay. Each year, it lists the top 10 recommended countries and top 10 cities to visit in the year ahead. As one of the most recognisable

names in the travel guide sector, its suggestions are influential for tourists and holidaymakers looking for a new adventure, with a focus on the unexplored or ‘off the beaten track’ destinations. The list of countries to visit for 2017 covers Asia, Africa, Europe, Central and South America and Canada, with India taking the top spot. Uganda comes in at a very respectable fourth place, making it the highest entry for Africa; Namibia comes in at number nine. The selection of countries included in Rough Guides’ top 10 showcases the very best of tourism hotspots the world over, from the Scottish highlands to Taiwan’s cosmopolitan capital, Taipei.

Positive The inclusion on Rough Guides’ 2017 list comes as a positive development for a country that has in recent times struggled to make the most of its valuable tourism potential, including the country’s abundance of nature, game reserves and the adventurefilled town of Jinja. Things look set to improve in the near future, however with a tourism expo being held this February and further developments in the hospitality sector, including new accommodation. Uganda has so much to offer and is a rewarding experience for those who spend some time getting to know the Pearl of Africa.

NAIROBI  Another destination recognised by Rough Guides was our very own Nairobi, chosen as one of the top 10 best cities to visit this year. Coming in third place, behind Paris, France, and Isfahan, Iran – in first and second place respectively – Nairobi was noted for its dynamic urban landscape, including our excellent restaurants and the blossoming art and design scene. Sister airline Fly-SAX flies from JKIA to Entebbe up to seven times a week.

Virtual Reality

Are you ready for VIRTUAL REALITY?

A

fter several false starts and the basic technology of decades gone by, virtual reality is gradually easing its way back into the mainstream and this time, it’s looking more promising than ever. With various VR devices available on the market and big companies keen to cash in on the latest technology trend, virtual reality may just be taking off for good this time, so get ready to explore new worlds with the latest buzzwords on the tech scene. So what exactly is virtual reality? It may be quite a difficult concept to get your head around if you have never tried it before, but it is actually quite simple. Virtual reality uses simulations of 3D images and environments that can be interacted with via headsets, gloves or controllers, giving the user the illusion of being inside the 3D simulation. VR is essentially the most immersive video game you’ve ever played, where you only see the virtual reality world and can interact with it in almost the same way you would in the real world. So you could be standing in your living room in your pyjamas when you are transported to outer space, as in the Oculus Rift game ADR1FT or climbing Mount Everest in the HTC Vive exclusive Everest VR. haven’t quite mastered the level of full immersion. VR has been simmering away again in the United States and in Europe for the last couple of years and it entered the Kenyan market last year with various devices popping up on websites and in malls across Nairobi, with stores including Samsung offering the latest must-have gadget – a virtual reality headset.

Headsets There are numerous headsets on the market, from Samsung’s Gear VR to the Playstation VR to the Oculus Rift, all with varying features and price tags. Many of the more budget-friendly options (although in general, VR headsets are quite pricey) use a smartphone to get the effect of virtual reality, such as the Samsung Gear, which requires a Galaxy S6 or above. At the higher end of the market, the US$ 799 HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift VR headset, priced at US$ 599, need to be connected to a computer to complete the experience. Although each model differs, VR headsets are generally similar, with a large, goggle-like headpiece that goes over the eyes. You also need some headphones to go with the headset; the better the quality

Valentine’s Day

Romantic ideas for Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is almost upon us: the one day each year where you can declare your feelings for your crush or celebrate with your loved one. Whether you will be together on 14 February or prefer to share the love any other time of the year, we have some suggestions for activities and gestures to make it the most romantic day of the year – whenever you choose to celebrate.

Weekend away

Candlelit dinner

Home-made gifts

A romantic getaway with your other half is one of the best ways to relax and unwind, forget about daily worries and focus on each other. Hotel prices around Valentine’s Day tend to be higher than an average weekend break, so if you are not tied to celebrating around the 14th, why not pick another weekend, perhaps your anniversary or significant date. If you’re set on celebrating on Valentine’s Day, book in advance and keep it a surprise for your beau until the big day for ultimate romantic effect. There are plenty of options for romantic breaks, whether you’re in Nairobi, at the coast or prefer somewhere more secluded, like one of our many national parks. Fly540 and Fly-SAX’s wide networks can take you to your dream romantic location, with flights from Nairobi to Lamu, Malindi, Masai Mara and even Zanzibar.

They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and we’re pretty sure this works for women, too, because who doesn’t love a delicious meal, especially if it’s cooked by someone special? If you will be doing the cooking, get thinking about what your beau likes to eat and plan a sumptuous three-course dinner, complete with candles, wine and chocolates. It doesn’t matter if you’re a whizz in the kitchen or not, there are plenty of recipes, blogs and tips online to help you. If not, why not call in a family member or friend who can assist you in the kitchen – your partner need never know you had help (just make sure you get them out of the house while you prepare).

Sure, it’s easier to buy the same old red roses or fluffy teddy to give to someone special, but why not make a personalised gift to really let them know how much you love them. It doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant, nor does it have to take days to prepare. A failsafe idea is to create a collage of pictures of you together or things you love and present it in a nice frame to remind them of all the fun times you have shared. If you fancy getting creative in the kitchen, home-made chocolates or fudge are an easy and inexpensive treat. There are plenty of recipes online if you want to make them from scratch, and you can tailor the ingredients to your other half’s taste for a unique sweet treat.

Day trip

Do nothing

If you and your loved one spend too much time working and not enough time doing what you enjoy, take the day off and spend it doing something you both love. If you’re in Nairobi, there are plenty of options for things to do, from ice skating at the Panari Hotel to indulging at one of the city’s many fabulous spas. If you’re more outdoorsy, take a game drive around the national park or pack a picnic and head to Ngong Hills for romantic views across Nairobi and the surrounding areas. These things are all great to do whatever time of the year, but indoor activities like a spa day maybe require booking in advance, so get planning before the 14th rolls around.

Yep, you read that correctly. Do absolutely nothing – and enjoy it. Sometimes we work so hard and are too busy to take time to slow down, relax and enjoy the little things in life. So why not turn your alarm off, have a lazy day and simply enjoy the company of your partner. Send the kids off to their grandparents, order some take-out and rent a movie. You can enjoy Valentine’s Day without feeling the pressure of having to go out and spend it with other couples and celebrate in your own way together.

Nairobi National Park

Safari in the city Four ways to experience Nairobi National Park

There has never been a better, or more important time to visit Nairobi National Park. This 29,000 acre wilderness is home to lion, rhino, buffalo and hippo, cheeky warthog and elegant zebra, excitable antelope and over 400 species of birds. It is not only Kenya’s first national park, but also the only national park in the world with a cityscape as a background. Yet while this claim to fame seems cool, it’s also the National Park’s downfall – such close proximity to the city means constant pressure from developers, the most recent threat being Kenya’s new Standard Gauge Railway, which plans to cut right through the middle of the park on its journey from the coast to the capital. To support this rich and wonderful treasure before it’s too late, here are four of the best ways to experience Nairobi National Park…

It is not only Kenya’s first national park, but also the only national park in the world with a cityscape as a background

THE TENTED CAMP STAY

THE LUXURIOUS LODGE LUNCH

Nairobi Tented Camp

Ololo Lodge

The only tented camp situated inside the Nairobi National Park, Nairobi Tented Camp is hidden away down a narrow dirt track among the trees. It’s an eco-camp, with a series of tented structures to make up the lounge area, dining room, kitchen and bedrooms. Hot showers are delivered via bucket, and at night a bonfire keeps visitors warm and toasty as the wilderness erupts into nocturnal life.

On the south side of the park, across the river and accessed by means of a hanging rope bridge, lies Ololo Lodge. Once a family home, it is now owned by Australian farmers Craig and Joanna Chapmann. The couple have poured love and thought into the property over the past six years to turn it into a homely, elegant lodge.

The central lounge tent is cosy and comfy, with travel books scattered on chunky wooden tables, soft sofas and cushions. In the bedroom tents, the bed covers are thick and warm to keep out the evening chill, with a sneaky hot water bottle tucked under the covers awaiting your arrival after dinner. Your night’s sleep might be a little interrupted by the various calls of the wild – a shrieking tree hyrax had me quivering in my boots when I stayed.

COSY  Nairobi Tented Camp is located within the park

A tap on the tent is your morning alarm, and a tray with tea, biscuits and a warm jug of water for washing are provided. Breakfast is included in the nightly price, but take the full board option with game drives to really make the most of your stay. Dinner consists of a threecourse candlelit meal with soup and handmade rolls to start. A night at Nairobi Tented Camp with camping fees costs from US$ 160 per person per night for non residents and KES 9,450 for residents, excluding Nairobi National Park fees and Nairobi airport transfers.

At the property, there are 15 guest rooms, which include tented cottages, stable rooms and two suites as well as a library, multiple lounge areas and a deck for sundowners. The only drawback to this idyllic spot is that it lies directly under the flightpath for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, which made our night in a tented cottage a little sleepless. That said, being the other side of the river, the views back over to the national park are fantastic, and it’s not rare to see lions hunting or rhino roaming during the day from the comfort of the colourful beach-style chairs. The best way to experience Ololo Lodge is during the day, when you can book in for a three-course lunch before or after a game drive through the park. Usually, lunches takes place out on the lush green gardens overlooking the park views and swimming pool, which you are welcome to use as part of the lunch package. Don’t forget to look up – overhead you’ll see cheeky families of monkeys zipping about in the trees. A night at Ololo Lodge costs US$ 400 per person per night for non-residents, including transfers, game drives and half board meals. Resident rates are from KES 12,000 half board. Lunch costs KES 3,000 per person, which includes a three-course meal and use of the swimming pool. Advance booking necessary.

THE ROUGH AND READY OPTION THE SUNDOWNER SPOT Twiga campsite

Ole-Sereni hotel

Those on a budget will want to consider either selfdriving on a day trip or camping at the public Twiga campsite near East Gate. The campsite has a toilet, a bathroom and a sheltered area for cooking, but you’ll need to bring your own firewood or charcoal, plus your own tent and bedding.

Situated on the edge of the Nairobi National Park just off the Mombasa Road is the Ole-Sereni hotel. A convenient stop-off on your way to or from the airport, the Waterhole Bar is also the perfect sundowner spot.

Another option for campers looking for a little more privacy is to call the Kenya Wildlife Service in advance and book a private campsite – essentially a patch of land anywhere in the park.

ON A BUDGET  KWS Twiga Campsite is a costeffective choice

During the day, self-driving is a fun way to explore the park at your own pace. Simply pick up a map at the gate and then wend your way around the dirt tracks, stopping to gawk at towering giraffes or stretch your legs at one of the picnic spots around the park. Although some of the park roads are tarmacked, it’s best to do a self-drive in a 4x4 vehicle, especially during the rainy season when it’s not uncommon for cars to get stuck. Camping for residents costs KES 350 adult, KES 300 child and for non-residents it’s US$ 20 adult, US$ 15 child. A private campsite costs KES 7,500 per person and needs to be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

FURTHER DETAILS  Park entry and vehicle fees:

Here, at dusk each evening, romantic candles flicker into life as the sun starts to set, and the silhouettes of tall elegant giraffe can often be seen in the park, strolling over the plains in the dim evening light. At the edge of the bar, there’s a narrow pool that stretches the length of the building, catching the evening rays and reflecting them back in the shimmering water. The food and drinks here are decent if a little expensive (the hotel’s main clientele are business travellers) so you can’t go too wrong on the menu. There’s a good wine list and selection of local beers to choose from. The best time to arrive is around 5:30 pm, just in time to make the most of the last hour of daylight and hopefully spot some warthog, antelope and perhaps even lion roaming the park of an evening. A glass of wine at Ole-Sereni costs from KES 450, beers cost from KES 400, sandwiches start from KES 800 and pizzas cost from KES 1400.

OLE-SERENI  Enjoy the views of the park from their popular bar

Resident fees are KES 1,030 for adults and KES 515 for children. Non-resident fees are US$ 43 for adults and US$ 22 for children. Vehicle fees are KES 300 per day for less than six seats.

MICE in Nairobi

CONFERENCE CAPITAL OF EAST AFRICA Why Nairobi’s MICE sector is the best in the region

T

hanks to a variety of recent high-profile events and world-class facilities, Nairobi has cemented its status as the conference capital of East Africa and it’s not hard to see why. With the winning combination of quality meetings and conference venues, a thriving hospitality sector and plenty of unique selling points (including Nairobi National Park), Nairobi has long been a favourite MICE city and is continuing to improve at an impressive rate. As an important hub for East Africa and beyond, largely thanks to the international carriers that arrive and depart from JKIA, Nairobi is easily reached from inside and outside 32

Africa’s low cost airline

Africa, which eases the MICE experience for all involved. The MICE industry is growing year upon year and the desire to find a venue for a meeting or event, be it big or small, is key for those wanting to make a lasting impression on attendees and ensure the event is a success.

Unique It seems that form and function are becoming equally important in selecting a MICE venue – one that not only serves its purpose as a meetings venue but also will ensure attendees remember the event for its location or unique characteristics, for example KICC’s helipad viewpoint or the

luxury setting of Hemingways Nairobi. Combined with excellent hospitality and state-of-theart equipment, Nairobi is fully equipped to become one of the best MICE cities in the world. KICC  A landmark in Nairobi and in the MICE sector

AT THE COAST  While Nairobi is the country’s MICE capital, the coast also has plenty of commendable venues to host events and conferences, with the benefit of long stretches of sandy shores, great weather and a host of good accommodation for those staying in the area. Mombasa’s renowned Sarova Whitesands has long been a favourite for coastal conferencing, with a capacity of up to 450 in their largest facility, the Baraza room and a host of smaller rooms. Further up the coast is the newlycompleted Paradise Convention Centre at the PrideInn Paradise. The convention centre’s Swahili conference room has 2500 pax, with the smaller rooms ranging from 60 to 160 pax.

profile events, including the United National Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) and the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). The KICC is a landmark of the city and, equally, a landmark of the country’s MICE industry, welcoming thousands of delegates and visitors each year. The success of such events will no doubt encourage further conferences to be held at the venue, with many already lined up for the year ahead and beyond.

Revenue So why is a thriving MICE industry so important? Well, it can be a huge source of revenue for the economy,

drawing a different kind of visitor to the area. Business travellers are likely to have different needs and requirements than a tourist, so there are opportunities for extra revenue to be generated from MICE visitors. For example, those visiting Nairobi for MICE may spend more than a tourist by staying in more expensive hotels or dining out in fine restaurants. This can be a boost for the hospitality scene by helping to generate extra revenue, especially when a conference or event is attended by hundreds or thousands of people. In addition, MICE events do not necessarily take place during high season, when many tourists visit, filling rooms across the city when they may typically be empty in low season, further helping to generate revenue for the hospitality sector. With such successful past events and many more planned, Nairobi is looking to go from the MICE capital of East Africa to one of the world’s leading MICE cities, alongside key players such as Beijing, Berlin and London. www.fly540.com

SUPPER CLUB

Curry in Hurry

DIY DINING has never been so much fun

G

oing out for dinner is a great way to catch up with friends or family and have a night off from cooking at home. But one of the most recommended Indian restaurants in Nairobi has a do-ityourself attitude that is anything but laborious and makes for one of the most fun dining experiences in the city. Curry in Hurry – not ‘curry in a hurry’, a mistake I repeatedly made during my visit – is a stone’s throw from Westgate Mall and offers an authentic cooking and eating experience called karoga. In case you’re not familiar with karoga, it’s a style of dining whereby the diners become chefs for the evening and cook a variety of ingredients outside over a jiko to create their

own authentic Indian curries. Curry in Hurry is one of the best-loved karoga places in Nairobi. Families, groups of friends and work colleagues get together to learn the art of creating curries on a jiko outside a private banda. Help is on hand for those who are less confident or who simply want to relax and enjoy the evening without getting involved with the cooking.

Jikos Ironically, Curry in Hurry is by no means a rushed experience; it is as much about taking time to create the food as it is enjoying it. As a group of four, we opted for two jikos to make chicken and mutton curries as well as a paneer tikka dish created by the chef in the kitchen. Two large metal pots were heated up on the jikos followed by the melting of a huge slab of butter to sauté the onions. Once the onions were browned, the helpers were on hand to advise on the best spices to add to the pot. Into the mix went cinnamon sticks, cloves, bay leaves, black peppercorns and a host of other fresh and dried

spices to amp up the flavour. In went the meat, followed by puréed tomatoes, and this was then left to simmer while we retired to our banda to enjoy a cold Tusker and some delicious samosas. Some chatting, nibbling and drinking later, the curries were ready to be devoured. Served with hot, fresh chapati, sauces and salad, the food smelt amazing and we couldn’t wait to dig in.

Curry The chef’s paneer tikka was the best I’d ever had, with the silky smooth cheese providing a perfect alternative for meat-free diners like myself. My comrades tucked into

the impossibly huge servings of mutton and chicken curry, which, I was assured, were wonderful. The old saying that ‘food always tastes better when cooked by someone else’ was certainly not true for these curry creations that we had dedicated our time and energy to cooking; and it was definitely a more fun experience than cooking the same thing at home. As plates were emptied and the chill of a Nairobi night began to take hold, we wrapped up the leftovers – and, boy, were there leftovers! – and headed home with full stomachs and fond memories of a great night with great friends and tasty food.

VW Polo Vivo

VIVA LA VIV N

ews that the VW Polo Vivo is to be assembled in Kenya caught my eye in the run-up to the year-end holiday season. On the face of it, this sounds like good news. Sadly, the he history of dutybusting locally assembled models has not always been a happy one. And who is to say that the building of this compact model will fare any better. But let’s see. As for the facts, the Polo Vivo is actu-

ally a product of the German automaker’s South African arm and differs slightly from the German original. So the CKD (complete knocked down) kits arriving in Kenya will come from VW’s Uitenhage plant and be put together in Thika (where VW Beetles were once assembled in days gone by). But as every East African knows, new models (including those assembled in the region) find it tough competing with keenly priced, and previously cherished,

imports from Japan. And these so-called ‘grey imports’ make up around 80 per cent of all car sales in Kenya.

DT Dobie Importer DT Dobie (also agent for Mercedes cars and trucks and some other marques such as Jeep and China’s Great Wall) will be screwing together the Polo Vivo and the car is being priced at under KES 2 million, including a threeyear warranty. DT Dobie follows in the

FUNCTIONAL  Rock-solid build quality

footsteps of fellow importer Simba, which ‘builds’ the ultra-basic 800 cc Renault Kwid in Kenya. To keep the list price down, it seems that DT Dobie will only assemble the entry-level version. This will be a car that retails for just KES 1.65 million (inclusive of VAT) – not quite on a par with used import prices, but low enough to make some buyers weigh up the options of new over second-hand. But what about the Polo Vivo itself, of which very few are currently gracing our congested roads? Is it any good? Well it depends what buyers are looking for. If they want rock-solid build quality, good fuel economy, an unexciting but functional interior and

so-so performance, then the base-level Polo Vivo could be just perfect. But if they are looking for something that cuts a dash, turns heads and raises the spirits when you’re behind the wheel, then this car is not for you.

Frugal The Polo Vivo will come with a 1.4 litre petrol engine, automatic transmission and air conditioning. In Europe, the 1.4 turbo petrol is surprisingly frugal as two of its cylinders can be shut off to conserve fuel, but will not be available in Kenya. But given the fact that the number of locally built Renault Kwids assembled in 2017 can almost be counted on the fingers of both hands, DT Dobie may have an uphill struggle here to gain a niche for the Kenyan Polo Vivo. Nevertheless, the Thika plant plans to turn out some 1,000 models a year. I wish them well.

Giraffe Ark Game Lodge

By Joan Wandegi

Welcome to

Wonderland ?

‘G

o big or go home’ is subliminally etched on every corner of the Giraffe Ark Game Lodge. The larger-than-life spaces, be it in the accommodation or the grass lawns that house a giant chessboard and other recreational amusements, present the feeling that you are in some sort of wonderland that basks on the foot of Mount Kenya. Emerging as a result of a Kenyan’s love for islands, private spaces and extravagance, Giraffe Ark was built on a beautiful, undulating 14-acre piece of land that enjoys stunning views of the mountain. Located off the Nyeri/ Nyahururu highway and just three hours’ drive from Nairobi, the lodge

is fast becoming a favourite among transit visitors to Northern and Central Kenya and business fraternities looking for first-class team building exercises. Conventional the lodge is not, with its spacious thematic rooms of pan-African, Western, Oriental and Arabian tones. Guests have the choice of 30 rooms: six deluxe rooms, five luxury rooms, one royal suite, and 18 executive suites, all furnished with different decor, which creates a unique ambience in each abode. Guests staying in any of the suites have private dining options extended to them. Modern amenities come as standard and all rooms have a veranda or balcony, cable TV, luxury shower and toiletries. Each space is an ‘island’, with crafty names such as the Bikini Island for the spa, which offers traditional treatments as well as other beauty treatments. The public spaces are dotted with seating designed from a Victorian fairytale, which may catch you off guard, but fits with the wonderland aesthetic.

Conferencing Perhaps where Giraffe Ark really shines is the offer of a consciously developed team building circuit, complete with trained instructors that offer customised programmes. The large open spaces allow for outdoor activities which are a must for any successful team-building

exercise. To complement this, there are three conference rooms fully fitted to accommodate groups of up to 200 people. Private dining for each group can be organised, with consideration given to those with special dietary needs. There is a range of dining options available and depending on what you fancy, the chef is more than happy to prepare something to suit your taste buds. The main restaurant serves up continental meals, while the Yakushima Island restaurant serves Asian speciality dishes. On Sundays, the lodge offers a poolside barbecue for both in-house guests as well as those just passing through. The evenings can be bitingly cold, so each space has a fireplace that serves as a central point for reflection or conversation. Working with the local surrounding communities is also an integral part of Giraffe Ark’s operations. MUSIC BLUE & LONESOME

24K MAGIC

More than 50 years after their debut album, The Rolling Stones head back to their roots with ‘Blue & Lonesome’ – the first studio album from the band in over a decade. Blues music has always been a passion and influence for the band, so they have dedicated their 23rd album to just that. Taking on some blues classics that they played early in their career, the album features renditions of songs by Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf. While the Stones have arguably had more success with their more rock ’n’ roll focused music, the bluesy vibe of ‘Blue & Lonesome’ is a nice throwback to their roots. STARS: 3/5

After featuring on the incredibly successful single ‘Uptown Funk’ in 2014, Hawaii-born Bruno Mars is back with a new album full of catchy songs and up-tempo beats. Eponymous single ‘24K Magic’ has already echoed the success of some of Bruno Mars’s earlier songs, reaching the top five in many countries around the world. The album channels the retro pop-funk vibe of ‘Uptown Funk’, a collaboration with DJ and producer Mark Ronson, which was a worldwide success. The album features hit after hit, with standout tracks including ‘Versace on the Floor’ and ‘Chunky’.
