Five of the best

FIVE OF THE BEST:

Places to stay in Juba A

fter some difficulties over the last couple of years or so, Juba is on the up and Fly540 is also playing its part by serving Juba on a daily basis. As visitors come back (mostly NGOs and business people), Juba’s hospitality sector has to up its game to woo generally high-rolling guests. As a result, this magazine thought it now the right time to check out what hotels are on offer and to choose what we believe to be Juba’s top five properties.

1

ACACIA VILLAGE Acacia Village gets top spot and is a true oasis of calm in Juba, surrounded by lush greenery in a six-acre plot. Located in Gudele, this apart-hotel is considered by many to be the country’s best. With a total of 39 rooms, consisting of apartments, villas and cottages, there are plenty of options for guests. On-site facilities are excellent, with a swimming pool, tennis court, fitness room, bar and restaurant. The restaurant serves fresh, international cuisine, while the Acacia Tree bar is a great place to wind down after a day’s activities. There are also a range of services including storage facilities, laundry, free Wi-Fi and more. Acacia Village is well equipped to host conferences and events, with projectors, screens, PA and audio equipment available to make sure the day runs smoothly.

The Villa Marvella offers both a la carte and buffet meals, and the pool bar is the place to relax throughout the day and into the evening. The on-site restaurant and bar offers Europeanstyle cuisine with an exotic twist.

3

JUBA GRAND HOTEL Located in the centre of Juba, and only 10 minutes from the airport, Juba Grand Hotel is a great place to stay for those who need to be close to the city centre. It’s named the Grand for a reason: there are 102 well-equipped rooms and suites, with king-sized or twin beds, and garden views. High-speed internet access and flat-screen TVs come as standard, in addition to a digital safe and a very welcome refrigerator. The Asmara and Adok restaurants offer international cuisine, while the main bar is the perfect place for a cold beer. CROWN HOTEL Another Juba favourite is the Crown Hotel – a stone’s throw from the airport with a wide selection of rooms. The Crown Hotel’s 120 rooms range from a single bedroom to a studio to a royal suite, so there is plenty of choice. The hotel has excellent facilities and amenities, including the Juba Ballroom, conference hall, VIP lounges, gym, swimming pool, jacuzzi and more. The Kenya-born actor and stuntman

Title Shah Kiran

K

iran Shah or ‘Little Kiran’ as he’s known, grew up in Kenya. After moving to England as a teenager, Shah began to develop an interest in show business and stunt work and in 1973 at 17, Shah auditioned to join a theatre company. Three years later he had his breakthrough and worked on his first film 'Candleshoe', starring David Niven and Jodie Foster. During his career, Shah has acted as a stuntman in films such as The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia and Superman. We chat to him about his achievements.

Q. What was it like growing up in Kenya? A. It was great growing up in Kenya. I lived in Nagara, Nairobi. My father had a shop near Shan Cinema called Kiran Variety House and I used to catch a school bus by the cinema and travel to Mapaka every day. I remember at the weekends we would spend time on Saturdays helping my father at his shop and most Sunday afternoons we would spend time with my uncle’s family. We would go out in one car, there were about 10 of us with the kids sitting on the adult’s lap. We would go to Wilson Airport, Nairobi Dam and Nairobi National Park to see the wildlife, Fourteen Falls, etc. It was in Kenya that I first started dreaming of being an actor, it started with me mimicking my uncle and copying his mannerisms, the other shopkeepers would always stop me and ask me to do my impression. Luckily when my uncle found out he found it funny.

Q. How did you first get into acting and stunt work? A. In 1976 after seeing an advertisement in a magazine, I got into a film called 'Candleshoe' as a stand-in for an actress. This film provided my big break in more ways than one. While on location in a dress with a long black wig, I was approached by the stunt coordinator Bob Anderson. As I

looked like a girl from the back, he thought I would be perfect for doing stunts for a girl and of course I said yes. From then on, my stunt life started. This film proved lucky for me as I also got my big break in acting from it. In (the UK’s) Pinewood Studios while on a lunch break, a producer called John Dark approached me and asked me to meet his director Kevin Connor. They talked to me about a small acting part for a character called Bolum for the film 'The People That Time Forgot'. I got my first part and haven’t looked back since.

Q. What is your most memorable and favourite role to date? A. I have had so many memorable roles and I have loved them for different reasons. In 'Superman', I was a scale stunt flying double for Christopher Reeves whenever Superman was flying in the distance – some of the time this was me. There is a scene in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' where I played the character Abu and I was with Harrison Ford and John Ray-Davis. It was amazing to have a part in such an iconic scene. The 1982 'Dark Crystal' changed my career; this was the first time I played creature characters. I had a starring role in Ridley Scott’s film 'Legend' playing Blunder, it was fun working with Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry and the rest

of the cast. In The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, I played character Ginaarbrik, the sidekick to Tilda Swinton’s character the White Witch. I loved this partnership and thought it looked great on screen. I worked on trilogies 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' and I really enjoyed working on both of these trilogies and the cast and crew were fantastic. Peter Jackson was really good to work with and there was a nice family atmosphere on set. On 'The Lord of the Rings', I ended up being the scale double and scale stunt double for all five hobbits for whoever was leading the scene. I was acting double, in other words, I had to replicate what the hobbits did in front of the camera. I had to watch the monitor and study them to replicate them. In all three of the Hobbit films, I was Martin Freeman’s Bilbo scale and scale stunt double and also played Goblin Scribe. More recently, I have been working on all the new Star Wars films playing various creature characters. Working with Neal Scanlan and his team has been fantastic. I also currently hold two Guinness World Records, the smallest stunt man in the world and the smallest wing walker in the world.

paddock and the horse bolted but we finally got the horse under control. We did one last run and the horse bolted again and suddenly he bucked and started bolting and I flew over the hand of the stuntwoman and landed badly on the muddy ground and fractured my back. I was taken by helicopter to Wellington Hospital. I stayed in the hospital for about three days and when I came out, I was in a brace and walking with crutches. It took me three months to recover and I had to stay in New Zealand for those three months but Peters Jackson’s production team looked after me very well.

Q. What has been your greatest achievement?

NARNIA  Shah portrayed Ginaarbrik in the movie

A. Everything I have done I deem to be great achievements. I have been very fortunate to work with so many talented people in the entertainment industry. From where I began, I have managed to achieve many of my dreams and I still strive to do more and work on more projects.

Q. Any words for inspiring stunt men and women? A.Three things: always work hard, play hard and be safe. Enjoy what you do and keep fit.

STUNT WORK  Shah has been a stunt man for 43 years

Q. Do you consider being a stunt man dangerous? Are there times when things have gone wrong? A. Stunt people are not daredevils. We do not take unnecessary risks and safety is always the first thing but sometimes the stunt can go wrong and people get hurt. It is very rare to get life threatening injuries. On 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' – while I was rehearsing the last big battle scene – I was double riding a horse in front of Miranda Otto’s character Eowyn, her stunt double and I (as Billy Boyd’s character Pippin). Industries that require cold rooms include food and beverage, agriculture, medical and research facilities. 540 interview the managing director of one of the leading cold room manufacturers in Kenya, Mr Suresh Kanotra of Sheffield Africa, and here is what he has to say about Sheffield’s cold room fabrication journey.

top tips for raising your LinkedIn profile

L

ooking to get noticed on LinkedIn? Perhaps you are wanting to grow your connections and further your career. A great LinkedIn profile is crucial if you want to grow your business or get noticed by your dream company. Here at 540, we have rounded up the best tips to help you raise your LinkedIn profile.

1

Keep all your basic info up to date

This may sound really simple, but it’s a common mistake that many people make. You could have an impressive profile but if your email address or phone number is outdated, then you may miss that one important call or message.

2

Personalise your URL

When you created your LinkedIn profile, a randomly-generated combination of numbers, letters and backslashes were used to make up your URL. This does nothing for your personal branding and it is always best to make your URL your name, brand or business name. To do this, go to ‘Edit your custom URL’ on your page. Now you can add your own personalised URL.

3

Tidy up your endorsements and keep it simple On LinkedIn, people can endorse you for all kinds of skills, sometimes skills you don’t actually have. This can lead to problems as employers aren’t going to be particularly impressed with your cat-sitting skills or your ability to chew gum. Keep it simple and stick to a few, relevant skills which will help you get that dream job.

4

6

5

7

Use professional pictures only

LinkedIn profile pictures should be recent and appropriate. Don’t use a photo that’s more than 10 years old, or one where you look vastly different to how you do now. And it should be business-appropriate, in other words, don’t use a picture that looks as if it should be on a dating site or social media. A picture at your graduation (if it’s recent) or in a suit and tie would be suitable. You want to be taken seriously after all.

Proof read everything

Again, this may sound obvious, but it happens often. Make sure that everything you write – both on your personal profile and in posts and comments to others – is grammatically correct. Typos and simple errors are a big no-no when it comes to companies looking for their next employee.

Put the ‘Summary’ box to good use

When creating your LinkedIn profile, you are asked to summarise yourself. This is pretty much the first thing that people will read when they click on your profile, so make it count. Ideally, you should have around four short paragraphs discussing your work passions, key skills and qualifications, noting various industries you have worked across over the years.

Treat your profile like your CV

Just like you should with your CV, your LinkedIn profile should highlight your accomplishments and experiences within the field. Avoid simply listing your job duties as you’re less likely to stick out and be remembered.

8

Request LinkedIn recommendations

If a member of your team tells you you’ve done a great job on a project, don’t be afraid to ask them to write a recommendation on LinkedIn. Don’t be afraid to ask them to be specific, as “John did great on that project” isn’t very helpful.

Title Festive

SURVIVING THE FESTIVE SEASON ’Tis the season to be jolly – or so they say. The festive season can be exciting and stressful in equal measures, so 540 magazine has put together a handy guide on how to keep your cool during the festive period.

STRESSED?  The festive period can be a stressful time

20

Africa’s low cost airline

The build-up Whether you’re a planner or lastminute gift buyer, you’ve got to start thinking about the festivities at some point. If you’re reading this having done all of your prepping and planning then good for you. If not, have no fear as it doesn’t have to be as stressful as it may sound. You’re best of starting by making a list of anything you need to do, from presents to buy to relatives to visit. Lists make overwhelming tasks more manageable and are great to keep track of progress during this busy season. Lists mean you can tick off each task once completed, helping you keep track of what left to do before the big day. If you work away from home and plan on being back with the family over Christmas, make sure to arrange your travel plans in advance. Fly540 and sister airline EastAfrican cover a wide network across Kenya with competitive fares if you want to avoid long car journeys or potential delays by road. However, make sure to plan ahead to get the best deals and availability.

On the big day

The aftermath

We all hope for a carefree, fun day of celebrations, but we know this isn’t always reality. The kids may be acting up, or the chapatis may be a bit burnt, however it’s important to remember the real reasons behind celebrating and be thankful. If something doesn’t turn out the way you want it to, don’t feel annoyed. At the end of the day, Christmas is a time for love and generosity, so keep that in mind when your little brother gets annoyed because you got a present that he wants, or your mum forgot to make the pilau. Be sure to make the most of spending quality time with your family, especially if you don’t see them too often. Take time to sit down and catch up with relatives who you haven’t spoken to in a while, perhaps not since last Christmas, and appreciate those around you.

January can feel a bit flat after all of the merriment and celebrations of December are over, but don’t let that get you down. The warm weather is here to stay, making it a great time to plan some outdoor activities to get you motivated for what the new year brings. If you have some time off, why not pop down to the coast for some ultimate sun, sand and relaxation. If you’re staying in Nairobi, there are plenty of places to visit with your friends and family, such as Karura Forest or Nairobi National Park. And remember, New Year’s resolutions can actually work and many people find that the start of the new year is a great time to think about what changes they would like to make for the year ahead. Whether it’s cutting down on sugary foods, taking up that hobby you’ve always wanted to do or dedicating more time to travelling, having a goal or two for the upcoming months can help focus and motivate you to have a successful and happy year ahead.

Be sure to make the most of spending quality time with your family

rather liked the original Nissan Juke. It was totally different, fabulously quirky and created a look that has yet to be emulated by other auto manufacturers. And, as with Nissan’s bigger Qashqai, the bug-eyed Juke managed to create a new market segment all of its own, the baby SUV. Now and after nine years of riproaring sales, we have a new-look Juke. Gone are a few of the questionable styling flourishes of the old model, and the wide choice of engines (at least for now) that powered the outgoing model. Instead, Nissan has replaced

the Mark 1 Juke with a somewhat less-striking model but one that faithfully upholds the original Juke concept – that of a cheeky and chunky SUV. So, it’s still instantly recognisable as a Juke, though, and the high positioned carry-over front lights are a clear example of Nissan staying true to the initial concept. But truth be told, the outgoing Juke was a tad small, even cramped on the inside, yet was surprisingly good value, exceptionally well equipped and had a decent choice of engines – both petrol and diesel. Launch of the new Juke comes with a distinctly underwhelming

1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing only 115hp, but other and beefier options are said to be on the way – as are the now obligatory hybrid and all-electric versions. This time, the styling is much more mainstream than before, with touches from other popular Nissan models, but there’s certainly more

Nissan Juke interior space. And an already sizeable boot for its class has been made even more commodious. For some, the new cabin may appear to stray into the realms of garishness – especially when ordered with a day-glow orange dash and centre console (for the more conservative, there’s also either white or black), but for others its fresh and modern and a much-needed improvement on the outgoing model’s now rather dated interior. In-car technology and safety features have come a long way in nine years, and as such, the updated Juke arrives with plenty of high-tech wizardry. Chief among these is Nissan ProPILOT – a semi-autonomous driving aid. It’ll be optional on

entry-level models and becomes standard on more expensive cars in the range. It’s fair to say that the day of the self-driving car can’t be far off.

All in all, I think Nissan has done a pretty good job with its new baby SUV but the company needs to hurry up and offer a wider assortment of power trains. Sadly, and for now, the 1.0 just doesn’t cut it.

Around town As for the new Juke, it’s a great little car to drive around town for those who prefer a higher driving position. The Toyota equivalent of the Juke is probably the C-HR, which is big on hybrid, and there’s not much to choose between them.

Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp

Modern luxury in a place with a rich history

O

n the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley lies Lake Elmenteita, a soda lake that’s approximately 120 km from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city. The lake has a significant population of the lesser and greater flamingos which made it be listed as Ramsar site in the year 2005. A road trip to the lake is one of the most refreshing experiences that one can do. A more rewarding experience is when you choose to spend a night or two in this area that renowned for its breath-taking beauty with someone you love. One of the places that I would recommend is the Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp, a place that blends modern luxury with rich history. If you are driving, it’s less than two

hours from Nairobi however, there is an airstrip next to the camp for private or chartered flights.

Accommodation The five-star camp has 24 luxury tents, all have views of the lake which one can enjoy from their private veranda. I slept in a deluxe double tent which had one kingsize bed fit for a queen to have sound sleep. I loved my views and the occasional honking of the flamingoes from a distance. The interiors are stylishly furnished in neutral colours with a fantastic four poster bed, polished brass fixtures, rich brown hard wood floors and moldings, as well as hand woven rugs. They also have a work station and free wi-fi which is a plus for me whenever I am travelling. They have

deluxe twin tents which also have lovely views of the lake. There’s another luxury tent called the Flamingo which is specially designed for couples on holiday celebrating their anniversary or honeymoon. It’s the camps largest and most extravagant accommodation and has a large Jacuzzi with a magnificent view of the lake. In addition to that, it has www.fly540.com

Serena Lake Elmenteita Camp a separate bedroom and a lounge, which features a coffee making station, a TV with DSTV access and a mini-fridge. On top of all that is the spacious private balcony which further lake vistas. You can stay for hours and hours with your loved one, enjoying the cool breeze.

Game drive A game drive is another experience that you can’t afford to miss. With the amazing tour guide and resident naturalist Richard Kipng’eno, you

and your loved one will have not only a memorable but learning experience of understanding the Soysambu conservancy ecosystem. In 1897, the first European settler to reach the area was Lord Delamere, where he pioneered farming methods. His descendants still reside in this area that covers 48,000 hectares. The wildlife and the cattle once lived together until the lions were translocated to Lake Nakuru National Park leaving the buffaloes and leopards. However, in 2015, the lions sneaked back into the park and we had a glimpse of them during our game drive. The conservancy is also home to the eland, warthog, zebra, gazelles as well as the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. The nationally threatened Colobus monkeys also made the area their sanctuary. There are over 450 species of birds over here too

and should you be a bird enthusiast, this a great place to come and watch. For instance, the African spoonbills, crown pullovers, super sterling as well as the helmeted guinea fowls. Vigorous tree planting exercise have been carried out in the since the camp opened in 2011. Serena advocates for conservation around the wetland ecosystem and brings together other hotels around to do the same.

Archery Should you desire to detox and engage in a sport, then head over to the archery field. Qualified trainers will be waiting for you even if you don’t know how to play it. A long time ago, archery was used for hunting or during war periods. Presently, this sport that is regarded as the skill if using a bow to thrust arrows, is used a recreational activity and now it’s a form of wellness. It is said that by playing it, the sport assists in attaining the complete state of physical, mental, as well as social well-being. More and more people are gaining interest in the game and are learning the sport which has been made popular by movies like Snow White. According to Gad Githinji, an archer and trainer at Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp, the sport improves focus, attention skills and improves patience. A person shooting well can stay for hours without blinking and as much as the sport is sociable, when you are playing, it’s just you and the bow. This is a perfect time for internal meditation. “By staying calm under pressure, the archer develops by being able to manage their concentration, nervousness as well as breathing. The sport is a discipline and is regarded as one of the higher martial arts – kyudo, which means the way of the bow. It involves 85% mental ability and 15% prowess,” he explains. The

main health benefit of the sport is building the upper body strength. The steps needed to attain a great shot all combine to form a highprecision routine that the archer needs to ingrain in their muscle memory as well as subconscious. A lot happens within just a short time and as a result, the movements automatically become instinctive. The arm muscles get worked and in turn, those in the chest, shoulders

LUXURY WITH A VIEW  The Flamingo Lounge suite

and back are strengthened. By pulling the string on the bow, one has similar stress on the muscles which has the same effect as weight lifting. The correct and continuous repetition of this movement strengthens these tissues. In this sport, you use muscles that you didn’t know you had. One also gets to improve their balance and handeye coordination, skills which are required for one to be successful in the sport.

Horse riding Another fun activity to enjoy with your loved one is horse riding. Whether you are experienced or just a beginner, the trainers are available to guide you through the entire process. I think this was my most memorable moment in the camp. Being that it was my brother’s first time experience, he had an easy ride down with stunning views of the Soysambu conservancy while exploring the lake’s shoreline. You

don’t have to worry about having a helmet as its already provided and one can ride throughout the day should you feel like it. The fee is charged hourly.

Cuisine The camp offers excellent international and local cuisine depending on your taste. Chef Joel Wambua wowed us during our stay which we enjoyed with the breath-taking view of the lake. Bush dining and breakfasts can be organised, enjoying the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Soysambu Conservancy. He cooks with passion and his excellence oozes out in every meal that he prepares. One dish you should try out is Lake Elmenteita’s rack of lamb. It’s one of the signature dishes in this camp that is served with a rich mint reduction, accompanied with a trio of market vegetables and sautéed potatoes. One can also compliment it with a tot of mulled wine. www.fly540.com

TRENDING:

Concrete touches A concrete interior hardly sounds stylish – but just like the exposed brick trend in the 90s, if done the right way, concrete can add industrial chic to your home. Concrete touches can turn spaces into a minimalistic and rustic utopias. As well as being fairly eco-friendly, concrete can also be polished to give a more chic and glossy look.

fter his first experience of drinking a microbrew beer in Bangkok, Alan Murungi was determined to build Kenya’s first ‘boutique brewery,’ which took him to California. Here he trained with brewer masters at the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company in San Francisco, after completing the Master Brewers Programme at the University of California. His journey then took him to Bavaria, where he designed a brewery. Today, you will find this brewery located on Mombasa Road.

Located in the Rivaan Centre in Westlands, the Sierra Burger + Wine is the brewery's own restaurant, which opened as a response to the growing demand for gourmet burgers and steaks. It classes itself as a ‘boutique brewery and restaurant’ with inspiration from the founder’s experiences in Thailand, California and Bavaria.

Sophisticated atmosphere The restaurant has a New York-style casual, yet sophisticated atmosphere and serves a unique range of award-winning gourmet burgers, steaks and South African wines.

The chef uses pure Angus, Boran and Wagyu X cattle, all bred on the foothills of Mount Kenya. Popular dishes include the Frenchie Burger – a French-style burger with caramelised onions, Gouda cheese and Dijon mayonnaise served in a brioche bun, the cheeseburger and a variety of pasta and salmon dishes. Desserts are also served including sticky toffee pudding and salted caramel ice cream. The interior and decor at Sierra is stylish, sophisticated and incredibly modern with black and gold touches to give a luxurious feel.

In 2017, Farrow led an investigation into a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth and a conspiracy of silence. As he grows closer to the truth, lawyers and spies threaten his career, following his every move and weaponising an account of abuse in his own family. British Indie/Alternative band Bombay Bicycle Club’s latest album is set to be released mid-January. This comes after a quiet period in which the band went under the radar. But this has been put to an end with brand-new music and live shows. The band announced that the album is for those who have turned to music in times of crisis, both personal and political, and used music as a coping mechanism.
