Hospitality & Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB). This sixth edition of ‘This is Botswana’ builds on the previous five editions, which have established the publication as the most comprehensive of its kind. Each hotel, lodge and camp is listed along with its official star rating. Each mobile safari operator is also listed along with others in some way associated with the tourism sector. I can say that, despite the economic difficulties affecting some of Botswana’s main source markets, the tourism sector still performed well in 2011. Prospects for 2012 look equally encouraging as we see more tourist arrivals from new and emerging markets. high profile safari-bound tourists flying into Maun

THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO VISIT A
cross Africa, Botswana’s reputation is high. This is a country rightly proud of its achieve-
ments and one that is a beacon for many other aspiring nations. Unquestionably, Botswana is blessed with rich natural resources that include diamonds – it is the world largest producer of gem diamonds – copper and nickel; and these provide the basis for the nation’s immense wealth. In fact, diamonds represent about 70 per cent of all export earnings by value.
METROPOLIS Other African nations, however, are rich in natural resources, too, including diamonds. Yet Botswana has shown that these resources can be used carefully to benefit a whole nation rather than just enriching those at the top. Botswana continues to dazzle economically, with its GDP showing impressive growth rates that remain the envy of many. In 2010 Botswana ranked equal
has consistently been among the world’s fastest-
third in Africa by GDP per capita. This is a nation that
growing since independence in the mid 1960s and where, for example, the capital, Gaborone, has been transformed from unremittingly harsh scrubland with an ad hoc collection of ramshackle buildings into a glitzy high-rise metropolis. This phenomenal economic performance is immediately evident in Botswana’s first-world infrastructure: four-lane highways and recently upgraded airports as well as up-to-the-minute telecommunications and reliable provision of power and water. Coupled with the purely physical development, however, is a more hard-to-achieve reputation for good governance and the rule of law, a place where, by and large, politicians come and go in a democratic fashion. Botswana always tries to do things in the correct way, and this is equally true of its tourism industry. Botswana has sold itself as a destination on the
4
understanding that its philosophy is quality not quantity – especially in the safari sector. This strategy has paid off handsomely. Botswana has gained an unrivalled reputation for top-quality camps, knowledgeable guiding and well-managed national parks and private conservancies.
NATIONAL PARKS Nowhere is this fine reputation more evident than

Many of Botswana’s highly regarded and well-run mobile operators offer tours of the reserve and provide an experience like no other in this uninhabited vastness.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT Keen to welcome more visitors, but mindful not to over-exploit its natural beauty, Botswana is seeking to open up new tourism areas beyond the main tourist gateways of Maun and Kasane. Improvements to Ghanzi Airport, in the far west, are aimed at opening up this little-visited part of the country, close to the Namibian border. Similarly, the Tuli Block, on the opposite side of the country, nestling against the Zimbabwe border, is also earmarked for further promotion. business centre and a conference and meeting hub; and this is reflected in the amazing number of topclass hotels that the city has to offer. This was further enhanced in 2012 with the opening of the 155-room Holiday Inn Gaborone at the city’s new landmark plaza, close to the city’s central business district. Today, the city is readier than even to host major international events and conferences. And Gaborone’s closeness to Johannesburg, only 275 km away, makes it perfect in many respects. In particular, the city’s safe streets, its fine shopping malls, good road network and growing choice of fine restaurants have made Gaborone a highly attractive destination for visitors. So whether it’s that once-in-a-lifetime safari or attendance at a conference or exhibition, Botswana offers a warm welcome to all visitors. www.this-is-botswana.com

about upgrading its airport facilities. The main international gateway at Gaborone has already seen the completion of an impressive new terminal building and improvements to other airport facilities. In particular, the runway at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA) has been extended from 3,000 to 4,000 metres, allowing it the hot climate and high altitude (1,005 metres) of

VIP LOUNGE Further work is being undertaken at Maun Airport, which is undergoing a major facelift. A new 3,700 metre runway has been completed at Botswana’s second-busiest airport, with the existing strip being converted for use as a taxiway. A new passenger terminal is planned. The existing terminal will be converted into an office and a new VIP lounge. Up in Kasane, which serves as a gateway to points in Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, work is under way on a BWP 180 million project to expand the airport. This work consists of extending the runway from 2,000 to 3,000 metres and widening it from 30 to 45 metres. In addition, the airport’s

UPGRADED Outside the regular tourism circuit, Francistown is an important business and mining centre and the nation’s second-biggest urban area. As with Gaborone and Maun, a new airport terminal and control tower were built in 2011 along with a new 3,000 metre runway. The existing runway was upgraded to handle B737type aircraft at a reported cost of BWP 562 million. Meanwhile, the CAA has identified Ghanzi, 600 km west of Gaborone, as the next airport to be upgraded. www.this-is-botswana.com

National carrier Air Botswana is certainly ready for the challenge. Still a comparatively small airline in international terms and serving a tiny home market, the carrier has to deal with some unusual market conditions such as thin routes, some seasonality in terms of inbound tourist traffic and the location of Africa’s busiest and biggest airport (Johannesburg) within easy driving distance of its home base of Gaborone. looks set to be a watershed year as the airline readies

NETWORK Air Botswana says that new routes to Cape Town, Windhoek and possibly even Angola are under consideration, but has yet to confirm any of these destinations. They will be added to the existing international schedule, which comprises services to Johannesburg, Harare, Lusaka and Nairobi (under a code share agreement with Kenya Airways). Equally, Air Botswana needs to expand its domestic network in what is a huge and sparsely populated country. Working with others, the carrier is looking to play its part in opening up new areas to visitors. For example, Tuli, where there is an airstrip, is being touted as the next destination to add to the schedule.

provided sterling service but may now need replacing. In order to serve these planned new destinations and to upgrade and expand the existing fleet, new aircraft are to be ordered during 2012. Air Botswana has yet to reveal what these new aircraft might be, but judging by the new routes on which the airline has set its sights, they are likely to be jets rather than turboprops. So expect to see a greatly expanded Air Botswana with new routes and new aircraft any time soon. www.this-is-botswana.com

cutting and polishing can be a risky business as companies have to fund their inventory in cash. Owing to slim margins and poor cash flow, the business is becoming more vertically integrated; and this is where Botswana is playing a role by establishing a diamond hub in Gaborone, where many elements of the diamond trade can be undertaken close to one other. Historically, Botswana has done well from upstream mining, but has missed out on added value business further along the processing chain. In setting up the Diamond Hub, key areas have been identified in which Botswana can play a bigger role:

African Cup of Nations 2012
ZEBRAS GAIN THEIR STRIPES
F
or many Batswana it was the nation’s proudest achievement. For those outside Botswana it
was a huge and pleasant surprise. This event was the qualification of the nation’s football team, the Zebras, for the finals of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ahead of established soccer giants such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt and South Africa. In population terms, Botswana is the smallest nation ever to qualify for AFCON. (Equatorial Guinea has a smaller population but as co-hosts of the tournament did not have to qualify.) Botswana not only qualified, but did so in some style, as it was also the first country to book a place at AFCON 2012, topping Group K and even beating 2004 winners Tunisia 0-1 in Tunis on the way to the finals. In fact, Botswana lost just one match, their last in qualifying game, 1-0 away to Togo while amassing 17 points from eight games.
UNITED TEAM With all football teams, however, qualifying for the finals is one thing; progressing to the next stage is another. And so it proved with the brave Zebras. Losing just 1-0 to highly regarded Ghana in a controversial opener in Franceville, Gabon, was no disgrace – even though the Black Stars played with only 10 men for the last 24 minutes of the match. The Zebras defended stoutly and generally acquitted themselves well against tough opposition. But the solid display against Ghana was followed by a less-than-impressive performance a few days later against Guinea. Once again, the match was played in Franceville, but this time it was Botswana who were soon down to 10 men as midfielder Patrick Motsepe was shown a red card after 45 minutes.
14
The damage had already been done by a rampant Guinea team who, after conceding a Botswana equaliser on 23 minutes when Dipsy Selolwane scored from a retaken penalty, went in at half time 4-1 up. The Zebras conceded two more in the second half to walk off to a heavy 6-1 defeat.
SUPPORT Many teams and their fans would have been demoralised by such a defeat, but Botswana came out for the final group match against Mali in buoyant mood with the vocal backing of loyal supporters who had made the long, difficult and expensive trip to Libreville in Gabon. Gaborone was once again a sea of light blue, white and black as Botswana gathered around TV sets to watch the game.

CAMPS & LODGES
The area is renowned for its population of bull elephant and for the unique interaction of the resident predator species. The close proximity of wildlife translates itself into the recently refurbished, modern African décor.
Between 1980 and 2008 the channel ceased to flow and Savuti Bush Camp overlooked open grassland. During 2008, the Savute Channel once more began to flow, creating a water source that rapidly filled with aquatic life, wide varieties of waterbirds and hippo. This in turn attracted one of the highest dry season concentrations of elephant in the country, roan and other antelope and their attendant predators – lion, cheetah and wild dog.

The Botswana Wildlife Management Association (BWMA) promotes the welfare of the wildlife industry in Botswana by all possible means and has established a platform for the industry to facilitate contact with the government, its ministries and departments concerned with wildlife and land use and with associations and societies concerned with conservation of the natural environment of Botswana.
Destination South was founded by Alan Michael Schmidt, who has over 25 years of professional hunting experience.
BWMA provides statistics and information on the activities of the wildlife industry to government, local councils, land boards and other interested parties. As well as promoting and safeguarding the interests of the wildlife industry and members of the association, including many tourism and safari companies, the association has established a code of conduct for members.
Tonunga Camp, in the controlled hunting area, CT1, is in the central district of Botswana and is one of the largest hunting concession areas in the country. The major trophy in this area is elephant. Owing to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the concession, the serious trophy hunter has an excellent chance of big ivory. Other species found in the area include lion, leopard, buffalo, eland, gemsbok, kudu, impala, zebra, duiker, steenbok and giraffe.
CONSERVATION & WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT
It also works with and assists the Department of Wildlife & National Parks and other governmental organisations and interested entities.

The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation was formed in 1991 with the aim of promoting wildlife conservation and environmental education for the children of Botswana. Today, it is a nationally recognised educational, conservation and tourist facility. The first project of the foundation was the creation of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994 on 30 sq km of donated land outside Gaborone. In addition to naturally occurring animal species such as warthogs, steenbok, kudu and a variety of snakes, several species have been reintroduced, including zebra, giraffe, eland, ostrich, hippos and rhinos. The reserve contains Botswana’s only wild cheetah transit station for the relocation of ‘problem’ cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage. The philosophy behind Mokolodi Nature Reserve is that income from tourism and the sustainable use of wildlife and natural resources is used to subsidise the conservation projects and the environmental education programme.
