A warm welcome

We lcome to the 15th Edition of Reflections Magazine. I’m pleased to share that 2025 marks a great occasion – the 40th anniversary of Adventures Aloft. This is a milestone we at the Mada Group are incredibly proud of.

It all began in 1985 with a single eight-seater balloon in the Masai Mara, using Fig Tree Camp as our base. Our very first aircraft, with a striking zebra stripe design, was manufactured by Raven in the United States.

Over the years, Adventures Aloft has grown beyond our wildest dreams. From that single aircraft, we now boast a fleet of over 18 balloons which take to the skies over some of East Africa’s most incredible wildlife reserves, from the Masai Mara in Kenya to the Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro in Tanzania.

Our fleet now ranges from the original eight-seater balloons to grand 16-seaters, catering to a variety of preferences. Beyond our daily scheduled flights, we also offer exclusive charter flights for smaller groups seeking a more personalised and private experience.

Without a doubt, a balloon safari is the height of any African adventure and over the past 40 years we’ve had the privilege of sharing this extraordinary experience with over one hundred thousand passengers.

2024 was a year of significant change for the Mada Group. We celebrated the official opening of Shukran Palace, Zanzibar – our first property on the island. The ceremony, graced by His Excellency Hussein Ali Mwinyi, was a grand affair, and we were honoured to open Shukran as Zanzibar’s premier palace hotel.

I believe that Shukran Palace has redefined the standards of hospitality in Zanzibar. With its opulent rooms boasting 85 sq m of space and stunning Indian Ocean views, and a private 500-metre beach, the Palace offers an unmatched level of luxury and exclusivity.

The response from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are confident that we have created a truly exceptional property that will be a valuable asset to both the island and the Mada Group.

As we embark on 2025 our commitment to continuous improvement and creating unforgettable experiences remains unwavering. In line with this philosophy, we are excited to announce plans for a new tented camp in the heart of the Serengeti, near the Togoro area. Construction is set to commence this year, and this new camp will perfectly complement our existing Elephant

Rock Camp in Tarangire National Park, offering our guests an ideal circuit experience between these two extraordinary destinations.

We are also undertaking renovations at some of our existing properties. Fig Tree Camp in the Masai Mara now boast a new bridge and will soon have a refreshed dining and lounge area, designed to enhance the guest experience following the floods of May last year. These enhancements will create more open public spaces with improved views of the Talek area and the Mara reserve.

In Uganda, both our Kampala and Jinja properties continue to thrive. The Namanwe Business Park, now thriving and operating successfully, has solidified Kampala Nile Resort’s position as the premier property in the area, offering a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of Kampala. Jinja Nile Resort has also undergone recent refurbishments, including a new pool area overlooking Africa’s longest river.

Our success would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of our incredible team across East Africa. As our portfolio expands, we have consistently welcomed talented individuals to further enhance our operations.

Today, the Mada collection encompasses 11 exceptional properties spanning Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zanzibar, a state-of-the-art beach convention centre, and our renowned balloon safaris operating in four of Africa’s most spectacular national parks.

We deeply value the loyalty and support of our esteemed guests. We recognise the privilege of serving you and, together with our dedicated team, remain committed to delivering the very best experiences imaginable.

NEW BRIDGE WELCOMES YOU TO FIG TREE CAMP

Fig Tree Camp experienced a significant setback in May 2024 when its historic bridge was swept away by devastating floods. To ensure uninterrupted access to the camp, a new, modern bridge was swiftly constructed. This impressive structure boasts superior

engineering and stands considerably higher than its predecessor. The bridge’s open design offers breathtaking views of the Talek River, renowned for its hippo pools in the Fig Tree section.

JINJA NILE RESORT GETS A NEW FACE LIFT

We’re excited to report that Jinja Nile Resort has renovated its public areas, including a new poolside and river front relaxation area.

Also included in the renovations, the conference halls and public areas of the resort have also been updated.

Jinja Nile continues to be Uganda’s premier getaway destination, with its iconic position overlooking the River Nile.

Further enhancements at Fig Tree Camp include a new dining room and lounge area. Both spaces are thoughtfully designed to face the river, providing guests with stunning vistas of the Masai Mara game reserve.

MADA APPOINTS GROUP OPERATIONS MANAGER

Amin Kanparp has joined the Mada Collection as the Group Operations Manager.

With over 20 years of experience in the travel and hospitality industry in East Africa, Amin will focus on strengthening relationships with partners and ensuring continued client satisfaction across the Mada group.

SHUKRAN PALACE OFFICIALLY OPENED BY ZANZIBAR’S PRESIDENT

Shukran Palace was officially opened on September 21, 2024, by His Excellency Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar.

The Grand Opening was attended by numerous senior government officials, including Minister Sharif Ali Sharif, Minister of Economy and Investment, and ZIPA Executive Director Mr. Saleh Saad Mohamed.

NEW LUXURY CAMP COMING TO CENTRAL SERENGETI

The Mada Group is set to expand its presence in Tanzania with a new luxury camp in Central Serengeti.

Building on the success of Elephant Rock in Tarangire, this new Serengeti camp will be a natural addition to the group’s luxury camp collection in the region.

The camp will be located north of Seronera, perched on a hilltop offering 360-degree views of the Serengeti.

Planned facilities include 25 luxury tents, each with a plunge pool. To enhance the experience, the camp will offer game drive vehicles for “fly-in” guests, as well as balloon safaris, operated by our own Adventures Aloft balloon safaris company.

Construction of the camp is set to begin in 2025.

Representing Mada Hotels was Tinu Mhajan, CEO of the Mada Group.

Shukran Palace Zanzibar is now one of the island’s newest and most prestigious Palace hotels. Situated on a 25-acre property with a 500-meter beachfront, it offers 80 Palace rooms and 20 Palace Suites, setting a new standard of luxury for the island.

The Sultans of Zanzibar

HOW THE LEGACY OF CENTURIES OF OMANI RULE HAS LEFT AN INDELIBLE MARK OF THE ON THE LIFE AND LANDSCAPE OF THE ZANZIBAR ARCHIPELAGO.

For over a century, the dominion of the sultanate of Zanzibar extended along the East African coast from Somalia in the north to Mozambique in the south and stretched as far inland as Lake Malawi.

At its heart was Zanzibar Island and its capital Stone Town, which became one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the region. This trading empire formed the roots of the cosmopolitan commerce and culture of the Swahili people of the Indian Ocean coastline, but it came at a terrible human cost with hundreds of thousands of Africans enslaved to work in brutal conditions for the ruling Arab elite.

Stone Town today is a living museum that reveals in architectural remnants its former wealth and influence as well as the infamous practices that fuelled it. You’ll find lavish merchant homes with brass-studded doors, former Sultans’ palaces, bath houses, and grand mosques and minarets. Just footsteps away you’ll also come upon the remains of one of the world’s last open slave markets.

Omani Arabs – who were building a thriving sea-going commercial empire – ousted the Portuguese colonial forces from the coast in the late 17th century with victorious battles in Mombasa, Pemba and Unguja. Omani rule was established over Zanzibar in 1698 and the archipelago became part of a thriving Omani Empire that at the time included parts of modern-day Oman as well as coastal regions of Iran and Pakistan.

Under Omani rule, the most fertile land was handed over to Omani aristocrats with slaves doing the farming. An international commercial empire was created along the East African coast. Each year, fleets of dhows would bring in iron, cloth, sugar and dates from Arabia, Persia and India powered by the northwest monsoon winds. When the winds shifted to the southwest, the vessels would be laden with copal tree resin for incense, cloves, coconuts, rice, ivory, and slaves for the return journey.

Oman’s strategic location and maritime history made it a powerful trading power in the region, however it was not until the mid-19th century when Sultan Said bin Sultan moved his capital to Zanzibar that the island became a major centre of Omani trade and commerce.

Said bin Sultan was the ruler of Muscat and Oman and of Zanzibar from 1806 to 56. However, defending Oman against its many would-be conquerors meant he did not set foot on Zanzibar soil until the year 1828.

PARADISE

It was love at first sight. In contrast to the arid landscape of Oman, Zanzibar was a verdant paradise. It was also easily defended and closer to the African mainland – the source of his wealth.

In 1840 Said bin Sultan moved his royal household to Zanzibar and declared it the new capital of his empire. His extended family-built palaces, bath houses and country manors on Zanzibar, and introduced the commercial farming of crops. The Sultan’s Palace, which still stands on the Stone Town seafront, was constructed between 1827 and 1834 for Said bin Sultan and was home to all subsequent sultans until the Revolution.

Despite Said bin Sultan signing treaties in 1822 and 1845 to restrict the slave trade, the export of slaves in the Sultanate of Zanzibar continued into the 20th century.

Said had 36 children. On his death in 1856, his third son, Thuwaini bin Said, became Sultan of the Omani Empire, based in Zanzibar. However, the succession caused a family rift that resulted, in 1861, two separate sultanates being created. Thuwaini became the Sultan of Muscat and Oman while sixth son Majid bin Said became the Sultan of Zanzibar.

The sultanate continued to soar under Majid’s rule despite his reputation for hedonism – a trait that is rumoured to have led to his untimely death in 1870 at the age of just 36.

Majid’s marriage produced only one daughter so he was succeeded as Sultan by his half-brother, Barghash, who returned from exile in Bombay (now Mumbai) to take over.

The new sultan began modernising Stone Town with prominent buildings during his reign including Beit-El-Ajaib (House of Wonders), Zanzibar’s first building with electricity. Britain had started to develop a relationship with the sultans during Majid’s rule as its imperial interest in Africa grew. Those ties tightened with Barghash. The second Sultan, who ruled from 1870 to 1888, was instrumental in the abolition of the slave trade in Zanzibar, signing two agreements with Britain.

In 1890 Zanzibar became a British protectorate. The subsequent sultans remained sovereigns, but their authority was trimmed.

However, a break in the pattern occurred after the death of the sultan amad ibn Thuwayn on August 25, 1896, when his nephew, Khālid ibn Barghash, seized the throne.

SUCCESSOR

As the only son of the late Sultan Barghash, Khalid saw himself as the rightful successor. His reign lasted three days before it was cut short by the Anglo-Zanzibar War – a 38-minute skirmish concluded by a British bombardment of the Sultan’s palace that is on record as the shortest war in history.

After Khālid’s defeat, the British-supported candidate, Hamud ibn Mohammed, assumed the throne. His successor was Khalīfa ibn Harūb, who went on to be Zanzibar’s longest-serving sultan until his death on October 9, 1960. He was a well-respected leader and a moderating influence in the region during times of political crisis.

In 1963 the sultanate regained its independence, becoming a member of the British Commonwealth. In January 1964 the Zanzibar Revolution overthrew the sultanate and established a republic. In April the presidents of Zanzibar and mainland Tanganyika signed an act of union of their two countries to be named Tanzania later that year. The age of the Sultanate of Zanzibar was over, but the Omani influence along the Swahili coast remains deeply ingrained.

MAASAI CLANS

Maasai clans

If you thought that the iconic Maasai tribe, whose historic lands largely straddle the Tanzania-Kenya border, were one people then you would be correct – but then again you might also be totally wrong.

To the foreign visitor and even to East Africans of other tribes, the Maasai appear to dress alike, enjoy a semi-nomadic life, herd cattle, sleep in a manyatta and –despite the pressures and the convenience of the 21st century, fiercely retain their centuries-old traditions and seemingly primitive lifestyle.

But appearances can be deceiving. As a tribe, the Maasai are surprisingly diverse –not so much in appearance (although there many subtle differences in attire and the wearing of jewellery) but in geography and

dialect. After all, they live in two different countries. Prior to the last 100 years or so and with no means of transport (not even a horse) across great swathes of East Africa it was easy for tribespeople to become isolated from each other.

All Maasai belong to one of two moieties, or classes, based on the colour of their cattle: the house of the red oxen and the house of the black cattle. Each is then divided into five clans or family sub-divisions known as ‘iloshon’. These comprise the Moitanik, Ilkirasha, Samburu (whom many anthropologists would probably argue are a totally separate tribe located far away in northern Kenya), Ilchamus, Laikipiak, Loitokitoki, Larusa, Salei, Sirinket and the Parakuyo who live in Tanzania, speak Kwavi and could perhaps be considered a different tribe.

Added to which there are 12 geographically based clans each having slightly different customs, appearances, and dialects. These are Keekonyokie, Ildamat, Purko, Wuasinkishu, Siria, Laitayiok, Loitai, Ilkisonko, Matapato, Dalalekutuk, Ilooldokilani and Ilkaputiei.

22 SEPARATE CLANS

So taken together, the Maasai are, in effect, a complicated patchwork of 22 separate clans and not the just the one homogenised tribe that many believe.

Today, Maasai from various clans and in traditional clothing can be found living and working beyond their tribal heartlands as any visitor to Mombasa, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar can no doubt testify. For example,

and with their honesty and warrior-like reputation, Maasai are much valued as askaris (security guards).

Despite the strong bonds of clan and tribal loyalty and an almost Amish-like reputation for eschewing the modern world, other Maasai have dispensed with their spears, sandals and shukas and adopted a more modern lifestyle and become highly successful in politics – to the level of president (in Tanzania) and vice president in Kenya, business and even sport.

RECRUITMENT

At the same time, Mada Hotels has been the beneficiary of this trend, and the Group has seen Maasai recruited at its properties in the Mara and Amboseli progress to become highly respected lodge or camp general managers or to work at its Nairobi head office.

The question has to be asked is whether the Maasai can continue their no-frills nomadic lifestyle in the decades to come or whether they, like almost all East Africa tribes, will succumb to the apparent attractions of the modern age. Like the Amish in Pennsylvania, there is a good chance that in 100 years from now visitors to the Mara, Amboseli and the Serengeti will still find shuka-shrouded Maasai adhering to their historic clan network.

The traditionally pastoralist Maasai comprise over one million people who speak Maa (but also Kiswahili and English), there are one of just one of 42 tribes in Kenya and one of over 100 tribes or distinct ethnic groups in Tanzania. The Maasai are the 10th biggest tribe in Kenya with Narok County being a particular centre and across the border in northern Tanzania.

THE

AMBOSELI TRUST FOR ELEPHANTS:

A legacy of elephant conservation

For over five decades, the Amboseli Trust for Elephants (ATE), formerly known as the Amboseli Elephant Research Project (AERP), has been at the forefront of elephant conservation efforts in East Africa. Founded in 1972 by Dr Cynthia Moss, ATE boasts the longest-running study of wild elephants ever undertaken, providing invaluable data on elephant behaviour, population dynamics and the threats they face.

UNIQUE ECOSYSTEM

Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya is home to ATE’s research. This unique ecosystem, characterised by permanent swamps fed by Mount Kilimanjaro, sustains a population of around 1,500 elephants. The Maasai, with their traditional nomadic pastoralism, co-exist with this wildlife. This delicate balance between humans and elephants is a key focus for ATE. The project meticulously monitors the Amboseli elephant population. Every elephant is

identified, and data on births, deaths, and behaviour is meticulously collected. This comprehensive dataset provides a crucial baseline for understanding elephant populations and their long-term trends.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

ATE recognises the importance of community involvement in conservation success and work closely with the local Maasai

community. Their innovative livestock consolation scheme compensates herders for elephant-caused losses, reducing retaliatory killings. Additionally, ATE employs Maasai elephant scouts who patrol the ecosystem, providing valuable information and fostering human-wildlife coexistence.

Education is another pillar of ATE’s approach. The Trust offers training programmes for wildlife managers and supports promising Maasai students pursuing higher education.

THE FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL

Despite ATE’s efforts, elephants face significant threats. Poaching for ivory

and habitat loss due to human population growth have caused a dramatic decline in many elephant populations. The Amboseli population, however, has shown a rare increase, primarily due to the research project’s presence and the support of the Maasai community.

ATE’s research has played a pivotal role in shaping the understanding of elephants. The Trust’s work highlights the complexity of elephant social structures, intelligence, and emotional lives. This knowledge is essential in formulating effective conservation strategies.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

While ATE doesn’t accept volunteers for logistical reasons, there are several

ways you can support the Trust’s work. Donations help fund essential activities like research, equipment and community programmes. You can also raise awareness about the plight of elephants or even participate in the Elatia Project, where you can “adopt” an elephant family, fostering a sense of connection and responsibility.

ATE stands as evidence to the power of long-term research, community engagement, and education in elephant conservation. Its ongoing efforts are crucial in ensuring the survival in Amboseli of these magnificent creatures for generations to come.

Saving Kenya’s sea turtles

The pristine shores of Watamu and Kilifi, Kenya, are not only renowned for their stunning beauty but also for their critical role as nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. To safeguard these magnificent creatures, a dedicated network of conservationists, local organisations, and international partnerships has emerged.

Five species of sea turtle – the green, hawksbill, loggerhead, olive ridley, and leatherback – call the ocean off the Kenya coast their home. These ancient reptiles exhibit a remarkable instinct: they return to the same beaches where they were born to lay eggs, ensuring the continuation of their lineage. However, human activities pose significant threats to their survival. Coastal development, including hotels and resorts, has encroached upon nesting sites, leaving these gentle giants with limited safe havens.

Artificial light pollution from coastal establishments disorients hatchlings, luring them away from the ocean. Additionally, plastic pollution and entanglement in fishing gear exacerbate the challenges faced by sea turtles.

A multitude of initiatives are underway to protect the turtles:

• The Marereni Local Marine Managed Area (LMMA): These community-based conservation efforts aim to safeguard sea turtle habitats through monitoring and protection of nesting beaches.

• Saving the Turtles: Young environmentalists in Kilifi County are spearheading conservation efforts, inspiring hope for the future.

• The Mighty Roar: This organisation is dedicated to sea turtle conservation through rescue operations, mangrove reforestation, community education, and plastic waste removal.

• Sea Turtle SAFE: By collaborating with local fishermen, this project promotes sustainable fishing practices and reduces accidental sea turtle captures.

• Mtwapa Maweni Turtle Conservation Project: This initiative focuses on community engagement, education, and beach clean-ups to raise awareness

about sea turtle conservation.

• Watamu Turtle Watch: This organisation monitors nesting beaches, rescues injured turtles, and operates a rehabilitation centre.

• Watamu Sea Turtle Volunteer Project: Volunteers contribute to sea turtle conservation by assisting with beach patrols, nest monitoring, and rehabilitation efforts.

• Bahari Hai: Bahari Hai works on various aspects of sea turtle conservation, including bycatch mitigation and photo identification.

While these initiatives have made significant strides, challenges persist, including limited funding, logistical constraints, and the ongoing threats posed by human activity.

By understanding the threats facing sea turtles and supporting conservation efforts, we can contribute to their survival. Simple actions, such as reducing plastic use, avoiding disturbing nesting turtles, and participating in beach clean-ups, can make a difference.

The future of sea turtles in Kenya hinges on our collective commitment to protect these creatures and their vital habitats.

THE BIRDS OF KIBOKO SPRINGS

Other waterbirds commonly sighted include what must be Africa’s least-attractive bird the marabou stork, squacco heron, western cattle-egret, pied kingfisher and knob-billed duck.

Colourful visitors: The beautiful gardens of Kiboko Springs are home to several colourful bird species. The collared sunbird, with its iridescent plumage, is a common sight and the striking malachite kingfisher, with its bright blue and green feathers, can often be seen from the lodge. Kilifi Convention Centre, a state-of-the-art facility ideal for business and leisure events, offers a variety of meeting rooms, expansive conference halls, and exhibition spaces and boasts its very own restaurant

In June 2023, Mada Hotels marked a significant milestone with the opening of the Kilifi Convention Centre, a state-of-the-art facility ideal for business and leisure events on the North Coast of Mombasa.

Ideally situated next to the picturesque Kilifi Bay Hotel, Kilifi Convention Centre is the perfect choice for delegates looking for both a high-end business experience and a relaxing stay.

The convention centre was designed with versatility in mind. Offering a variety of meeting rooms, expansive conference halls, and exhibition spaces, the centre can accommodate everything from team workshops to large-scale conferences.

Its modern facilities include advanced communication tools such as video conferencing capabilities, making it an excellent choice for both in-person and hybrid events.

One of the unique features of the centre is its ability to host multiple functions simultaneously. Thanks to its innovative design, different events can run side by side without disrupting one another. The flexibility of the space means that clients can plan events of varying sizes and formats. Additionally, the facility boasts its very own restaurant, offering a variety of catering options for delegates ensuring they are well taken care of throughout the day.

As the only independent convention centre of its kind on the North Coast of Mombasa, the centre offers a fresh and modern alternative that is both functional and stylish.

The coastal town of Kilifi offers an array of activities and attractions for conference delegates to enjoy in their downtime.

Situated along the Indian Ocean coastline, Kilifi is a great location for water sports enthusiasts or just to relax on its beau-

tiful beaches. The town is also home to a wide variety of accommodation options, including the two Mada Hotel properties in the area.
